PONY Prowess In early 1964, a brand new automobile market emerged with strong appeal to the first wave of Baby Boomers who were just beginning to earn their coveted driving licenses. Loosely termed “Sporty Compact,” it actually began with the debut of the Plymouth Barracuda on April 1st, 1964 with little fanfare. But it was the launch of the 1964 ½ (titled as 1965) Ford Mustang a few weeks later on April 17th with a base price of $2,368, that transformed the automotive landscape. It began a love affair with this genuine American Idol that has lasted almost 50 years now with no indication of ever slowing down. Initially based on the simple yet rugged Falcon platform, the long hood, short deck design was

an immediate smashing success with crisp and fresh styling. The hardtop coupe and convertible body styles were joined a bit later by the 2 + 2 fastback, all offered with a dizzying array of powertrains, options, colors and trim choices to allow buyers to personalize to taste. With an inline 6 cylinder engine and 3-speed floor shifted transmission standard, a variety of small block V-8’s were available including the high performance 271/hp 289ci V-8 screamer for performance enthusiasts, well known today as the K-code. Corporate targets for first year sales were less than 100,000 units, but well over 300,000 were built in the first 3 months making Mustang one of the most successful new model MECUM.COM

launches in history. The coveted one million sales mark was made after only 18 months forcing GM to introduce some competitors with the F body Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird in 1967. Even Carroll Shelby saw great potential and created the 1965 GT350 at his Shelby American facility in aircraft hangers at the Los Angeles airport on the fastback body. Specific performance, suspension, and appearance improvements were incorporated for both race applications as well as street use powered by the K-code V-8 pumped up to 306hp. Every Mecum Auction is proud to offer early Mustangs in all condition/price ranges to allow collectors a chance to add an original pony to their stable. M MECUMMONTHLY

entertainment history Hello! My name is Mick Way, and I have the greatest job in the world… chasing entertainment history! Never knowing where a passion may lead gives thrill to the journey. For me, it started over 15 years ago – in the spring of 1997. As a favor to a friend, I stepped onto a movie set for the first time to be an “extra.” A few years later, I was a proud member of the I.A.T.S.E. Local 490 (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees) in Minneapolis, working as a crewmember on major Hollywood movie productions. With a bit of reflection, the person on the receiving end of the favor that day was not my friend, it was me. Another big passion of mine is history. I believe there is nothing more powerful than understanding events and inventions responsible for shaping our modern culture and society. So, when Mecum presented me the opportunity

to start and grow this new business…well, that is the reason for the “greatest job in the world” statement! That being said, I’m proud to announce the inaugural Mecum Celebrity Items Auction this July 26-27, at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California – where entertainment meets history, and the icons always get top billing. All the incredible Celebrity Items have played a part in entertainment history. Here at Mecum, it is our job to highlight and celebrate that role. We are excited to bring the Mecum style entertainment we are so well known for in the classic car world to Santa Monica. So, if you’ve been to our auctions or watched them on TV you know this means fast-paced, highoctane entertainment...a true rock concert auction experience and celebration! Mecum has aligned itself with MECUM.COM

the stars this first Celebrity Items auction. We are fortunate to be offering incredible items from John Lennon, Steve McQueen, Elvis Presley, and Ringo Starr; all of which come from consignors closely involved with these icons’ personal lives. In the upcoming days and weeks, we will roll out more Celebrity Items and Cars to be offered during the two-day extravaganza at the Barker Hangar, a world-class venue with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, set in the heart of Southern California. Please stay tuned and keep checking the Mecum website for updates. If you have any questions, please call me at the office or via email anytime: mway@ mecumauction.com Thank you so much for your time and attention…until next time, I will be keeping my eyes on the stars! Insider’s Scoop

Quality and quantity by DAVID NEWHARDT

For more than a year, I’ve been writing this column to help consignors create photographs that will help Mecum Auctions market their car. The results have been impressive, and all of us at Mecum Auctions are grateful. Sharp images that show a vehicle to its best advantage help bidders in their pre-auction selections, and when interest in a specific lot is hot, the bidding during the auction is usually more intense. Everyone wins! Prior columns have focused on singular techniques that photographers can use to improve their images. From choosing a background, the direction of the light, even the height of the camera, we’ve touched a fiend! By that I mean, experiment. With the advent of digital photography, photographers now have instant feedback. Did that off-camera flash work in this photo? Digital cameras will show you if you got the shot, or not. As professional photographers say, pixels are MECUM.COM

free. Meaning you can shoot as many photos as you like with virtually zero cost. It’s not like in the film days, when every push of the shutter button literally cost money. Get on your knee and take some shots. Now stand up and take a few more. Move a few feet to one side or another and keep shooting. Once you’ve wrapped the shoot, edit. Be your own worst critic; delete the photos you don’t want to see. Odds are good that nobody else would want to see them either. But keep the ones that put a smile on your face. We want to see those. Those are the quality shots. During your photography session, you’ve taken a LOT of images. After you’ve edited the clunkers out of the mix, you probably have a LOT of good shots. We want a quantity of quality images. It sounds like we want it all, but when you submit a large number of good photos, marketing your vehicle is a pleasure. M MECUMMONTHLY

magnificent McMurrEy 2014 will mark the 50th Anniversary of Ford’s inimitable Mustang, and Longview, Texas collector Joe McMurrey has just the thing for those wishing to participate in the year-long celebration of America’s Original Pony Car: the McMurrey Family Collection of K-Code and Boss Mustangs, to be offered at the Mecum Monterey Auction on Friday, August 16, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa on the Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey, California.

The inspiration behind this collection will come as no surprise, as Joe McMurrey explains: “I am a real big Carroll Shelby fan. I’m a Ford guy because of Carroll Shelby, and for Shelby to be able to do what he did with the Mustangs he had to start off with the K-codes… I started off with the 1964 ½ built on the first day of K-Code production, went from there to the Boss 429 and on through to the 2012 Boss 302. We couldn’t agree more: 2014 will see a nationwide celebration of the Mustang phenomenon, and these seven very special collector Mustangs from the McMurrey Family Collection represent an outstanding opportunity to get in on the fun. M

THE Fabulous On July 21, 1987, automotive journalists from around the world assembled at the civic center near Ferrari’s Maranello headquarters for an audience with the Old Man himself. The occasion: the unveiling of the Ferrari F40 Berlinetta, the result of Ferrari’s instruction to his engineers to build the best car in the world. The F40 was indeed a technological tour de force, combining superbly executed engineering conventions with brilliant innovation. Its maximum speed of 201 MPH necessitated Pirelli’s all-new Z-rated P700 tires mounted on center-locking F-1 style aluminum

F40 would face in the real world. The F40’s 3.0L twin turbo 4-cam V-8 made no such compromises, boasting 478 HP at 7,000 RPM while delivering its maximum 425 lb-ft of torque at just 4,000 RPM, making it docile at low speeds yet ready to instantly launch the

car forward with overwhelming ferocity. Sculpted in carbon fiber for minimal weight and maximum downforce, the F40’s stunning Pininfarina bodywork has gained iconic status in the intervening years, more for its artful forms than its aerodynamic efficiency;

so too its strictly functional cockpit with its highly bolstered seats, simple padded steering wheel, gated shifter and analog instruments. Sold new by Ferrari of Los Gatos on June 21, 1991, this oneowner 1990 Ferrari F40 has been

driven just 473 miles. It received its first service on October 6, 1992 at 459 miles and was then placed in storage, where it remained until April 26, 2013. One of only 1,311 produced from 1988 to 1992, it is a superb, virtually untouched example of the last Ferrari commissioned by Enzo Ferrari before his passing on August 14, 1988, barely one year after he introduced the F40 as the world’s fastest production automobile. As Lot S141 it is scheduled to be sold at approximately 2:40 PM Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the Mecum auction in Monterey, California. M

original working clothes

Original tractors tell a story of work, family, and history. Considering tractors were a machine built and designed to work, it’s remarkable to find one over 50 years old in the condition of its time. When you hear someone say, “she’s in her original working clothes” you have found a special tractor. Looking at such a machine, you know it was maintained meticulously and with much care over the years. A tractor’s story runs parallel to the family who maintained it. Original tractors give us insight into innovations and progress that

advanced our nation and culture. Most artifacts of value revolve around originals which provide a benchmark for all restored items later on. A Corvette described as a driver is not the same original as a Bloomington Gold Survivor. The idea behind Bloomington Gold Benchmark over 30 years ago was to create a historical baseline so the heritage would not be lost, as most Corvettes at the time were being turned into hot rods or going to the crusher. If I hear a tractor described as “in her working clothes”, I think of a Bloomington Gold Benchmark Corvette.

MECUM.COM

The main attraction on Friday at the 4th Annual Gone Farmin’ auction is a 1919 Waterloo Boy N in her original working clothes. The tractor was purchased from the original owner in 1979 and was in a private collection for the next 34 years. This is an amazing original that it almost 100 years old. The fenders have the marks from the machine that rolled along to place the rivets to hold it together, and on the frame rail you can still see parts of the original Waterloo Boy Stencil. Little details like these set this Waterloo Boy apart from the rest. M

The exhibit was in recognition of the 90th anniversary of the first win for a Harry Miller car in the Indianapolis 500. Tommy Milton drove the famous “122” car to the first of eleven victories for Harry Miller-built cars and engines. During the Concours event, Miller Club President

Dana Mecum won the award for “Best Open Wheel Car” with his V16 Miller, which was presented by Bill Spoerle of the Indy 500 Racing Museum. “When people talk about Harry Miller’s work, the word ‘genius’ always surfaces,” stated Warner. “After seeing his work up close, it’s easy to understand why.” Bill Warner is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Harry Miller Club. Harry Miller’s attention to even the most minute detail was stunning. He was obsessive about quality.
