Meticulously restored by another rodding great, Roy Brizio, the flamed, chopped and dropped McMullen Roadster earned Third in Class at the 2007 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, reinforcing its status as the World’s Most Iconic Hot Rod. In keeping with the auction’s strong SoCal theme, the thirdhighest sale, right behind an ACDcertified Category 1 Original 1930 Duesenberg Model J hammered home at $370,000, was the famed Jack Calori Coupe. Another landmark machine in the hotroddingcustomizing culture, the Calori Coupe first appeared on the cover of Hot Rod in 1949. Also restored by Roy Brizio, it won the first-ever Early Custom Cars 1935-48 Class and the Dean Bachelor Award at the 2005 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. FINDING THE ESTEL THEIS
One of my personal favorite John Deere stories is about the experience I had while preparing for, and auctioning the first John Deere collection we ever sold. Mecum Auctions is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary, and throughout those years, I’ve gone with my Dad to look at many car collections and make some very big deals. In 2010, I started my own division of vintage tractor auctions. In the first year, we hosted a tractor auction at our home base in Walworth, Wis., with an astounding 220 tractors entered for the very first event. In March 2011, we held our first spring auction, followed by the second annual fall August auction in Walworth and that’s where the story of selling the Estel Thies John Deere Collection begins. As the auction advertisements 16
MECUMMONTHLY
rolled out, the calls started to flow in. One day, a call came in from a representative of the Thies family inquiring about the possibility of auctioning a collection of John Deere tractors, and from there, we were off to the races. We didn’t know much about the tractors, but we had a feeling this was going to be a big deal, so we set up a visit with the family. My assistant David Purvis and I set out on the road for Kansas with all the excitement that comes with the possibilities of the unknown. We arrived the night before the scheduled meeting, and after driving all day, we went out for a good Kansas steak. The following morning I got up early, but David is a notorious late sleeper and even on this day I had to rile him out of bed. We had a quick breakfast and took the short drive to the farm to meet the family, MECUM.COM
some close friends, advisers and Mrs. Leota Thies. Leota is the type of person that can say a whole lot without hardly talking at all. It didn’t take long to realize that even though she had many good advisers, it was her decision on what to do with her husband Estel’s tractors. We sat around the kitchen table and had the usual discussion and finally got to the big question, “What are they going to sell for?” During the discussion David and I gave them both a low price and a high price of what we thought they could bring. They didn’t show their cards on what they thought about the prices, which was nerve racking, but to be

expected. When we went down to the barn, opening the door I felt like Indiana Jones looking at the lost ark. The tractors were not cleaned up for show, but you could see treasure through the dust. The hardest part of the deal was now upon us: waiting for the decision. Leota was very concerned about ensuring she was doing the right thing and weighed each and every option. We sold a collection of Farmall tractors for Tom Geyman at the prior auction in March, and Leota got in contact with him to discuss his experience. After finally taking everything in, Leota decided to auction the tractors with us.
Once given the green light, we started planning a trip to capture pictures for the catalog. With only three weeks to get the catalog completed, timing was perfect when everything came together, and it was one photo trip I will never forget. My brother Ben is a teacher and had the summer off, so he came to help alongside my long-time mechanic Tyler. We arrived at the farm as the sun came up and made a plan. My brother Ben washed and detailed the tractors, Tyler worked on them and got all the tractors running while I took the pictures. I definitely had the best part of the job. It was hot in the Kansas sun, but Leota kept us going with her homemade tea and cookies. We picked out the perfect spot for our feature pictures in front of the house by a stone with the family name on it. While we MECUM.COM

were working on tractors and taking pictures, Leota mowed the front yard and got out her weed whacker to go around the stone. We started getting the tractors ready so that as the sun started to come down we could move to the front yard to attempt to get the cover shot. Everything was in place, the grass was perfect, the light was spot on, and with a single click we had our catalog cover. Everything fell into place like it was meant to be. The day we came to pick up the tractors was an emotional day for Leota as they were such a big part of her husband Estel’s life. Everything made it to Wisconsin, and the auction was a complete success. M MECUMMONTHLY

by KANE ROGERS
There is simply no other 1955 Chevrolet like this Red, 2-door hardtop known as ZL-55, a masterpiece of the rodder’s art that earned a coveted Great 8 Finalist position at the Detroit Autorama in February 2012. Built from an original 2-door body, it was completely stripped and dipped in rustproofing compound, and then the customization process commenced. By the time its Strawberry Red PPG paint was applied, it had been treated to a plethora of custom touches ranging from smoothed sheet metal to recontoured wheel well openings, custom floor and trunk pans, inner fenders, firewall and dash panel. This car’s spectacular finish, which extends to the undercarriage, trunk and engine compartment, is 18

described by its owner as “gunbarrel straight, slick as glass and looking 10-foot-deep.” The same craftsman-like approach is evident in the custom leather interior, a masterfully executed environment of Tan leather and polished billet hardware designed and installed by the Recovery Room in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. Rolling on highly polished deep dish billet wheels wearing smooth-sided rubber, the chassis is based on a modified frame built by the Roadster Shop and fitted with a Currie rear end with a body color center section and triple chrome plated axle tubes, chromed driveshaft, body color Tremec 5-speed and chrome plated bell housing, which leads us to the inspiration for the car’s “ZL-55” moniker: no MECUM.COM
garden-variety Chevrolet big block V-8 would suffice for such a completely over-the-top machine such as this. Instead, it is a genuine aluminum-block ZL1 factory unit used in the 1969 Camaro campaigned by famed road racer Gene Felton. Polished and assembled with all the best parts by Hinkle’s Performance in London, Kentucky and dyno tested to 550 HP, it is as beautifully finished and detailed as the rest of the car, and has been authenticated by Felton as the engine he used to win the 1972 Daytona Presidential 250 and the 1973 Paul Revere 250, also at Daytona. To assure future authenticity it bears Felton’s name on the stamp pad. Offered complete with a personalized display, the ZL-55
is for the serious car collector wishing to own a true work of art that is a Best in Show candidate in any venue.

SIZE MATTERS
It was 25 years ago when Dana Mecum decided to begin selling collector cars at auction, and those early years set the stage for the immense growth that endures to this day. A great example of this continuous expansion is our upcoming Kissimmee, Florida auction set for January 2013. What was dubbed last year as the world’s largest collector car auction with six-days and 2,150 cars, has now been extended to 10 days and 3,000 entries. To put it simply, we are going to shatter our own record with this one. In 2012, our Kissimmee Auction pulled in $60 million in sales
with an impressive 73 percent sell ratio – once again resetting the bar for all collector car auctions. We opened this year’s Kissimmee Auction consignment book promptly on October 1, almost five months in advance of the auction, and placed well over 1,000 entries in the first week alone. As a result of such high initial demand, we immediately extended the auction docket from six to ten days to give everyone a chance to take advantage of the buzz, excitement and success of the world’s largest collector car auction. MECUM.COM
For those that were at last year’s auction and had the opportunity to personally witness the huge daily crowds, plus the big sales, it is easy to understand this need to expand. Our Kissimmee auction thrives on a huge customer base in the Southeast region of the country, in addition to eager snowbirds from the Northeast and the Midwest traveling down for some well-deserved fun in the sun in January. Make plans now to join us for this monumental event as a buyer, seller or just for the chance to take in all the auction action. It will be big! M MECUMMONTHLY

THE CHASE AND THE JOURNEY IN BETWEEN As one wanders toward the end of the year, stock is taken of the great people, things and events that have happened along the way in 2012. From Monterey to the newly formed Anaheim Auction, I travelled the West digging into “barn find” treasures that one may have thought didn’t exist. I even got the chance to meet the owners, some with personalities worthy of a book. These artisans don’t just build trailer queens – they know how to use an English wheel, mold steel and aluminum out of flat plate into flowing fenders. They are engineers that can build mechanical marvels out of billet using little more than an antiquated lathe, a drill press and a milling machine. One of these men was an 88-yearold who had given up on life, but
regenerated himself through our auction in Monterey. He discovered the “mental enema” that came with selling his car collection and buying all new inventories with the resulting cash. Another was an old, out-oftouch man living in a log cabin buried deep in the nether regions of Mendocino County in California. He had a pull-chain toilet, no cell phone and no email after he had grown frustrated with the Internet and decided to throw his computer out the window and shoot it with his .38. We found several treasures buried in his barn, everything from a penny farthing bicycle, to a Vincent motorcycle and an Old Hudson. Prior to Anaheim, I met another great friend with only six months
MECUM.COM
left to live who was passing along his car collection, his life’s work, for others to admire without an ounce of sadness or regret. You see, it’s not about the highprofile business, the important people, the TV or the big players and money. But instead, like our fearless leader Dana says, “It’s the chase and the journey in between that is fascinating, not always the destination.” The adventure for all will continue into 2013 with our Kissimmee Auction in January. Happy Christmas to you and yours and see you all next year. And thanks for the opportunity to Dana and family, our clientele and all the folks that make up this great organization and amazing culture. Here we come again! M

WORLD’S FASTEST TEMPEST by KANE ROGERS
After Mickey Thompson and Royal Pontiac dominated Super Stock and A/FX in 1962 with their own specially-prepared Tempest racers, Pontiac Motor Division took direct aim at the NHRA’s Factory Experimental class, building 14 special lightweight Tempest racers – six LeMans coupes, six station wagons and two standard coupes. Built on December 12th, 1962 at the Pontiac, MI assembly plant, the purpose-built LeMans coupes were all painted White and given Blue interiors with bucket seats. Following in Thompson’s footsteps, Pontiac Engineering endowed the cars with high compression, dual quad-equipped 421 CI Super Duty engines connected to unique rear-mounted 4-speed automatic transmissions. All 24

used aluminum front sheet metal and brake drums, acid dipped bumpers and mounting brackets and lightweight windshield glass, resulting in almost perfect 48/52 weight distribution while keeping the cars in line with the NHRA’s 7.5 pounds-per-cubic-inch A/FX class weight limit. One of the six built, this Tempest LeMans coupe was delivered to Stan Long Pontiac on Grand River Road in Detroit. Driver Stan Antlocer campaigned the car through a busy and successful 1963 season that included the allMECUM.COM
important Indy Nationals. Along the way he made an important change to the car; the 4-speed transaxle accommodated only up to a 3.90 final drive ratio and was somewhat prone to breaking under the 421’s explosive power, so Antlocer replaced the factory driveline with a heavy duty Borg Warner 3-speed manual transmission and a full-size Pontiac rear end with a 4.30 gearset. The change paid off in spades, earning Antlocer the title of “World’s Fastest Tempest” after tearing off an 11.93 ET at 123.95 MPH at U.S. 131 Dragway in Martin, MI. This record-setting Pontiac factory lightweight Tempest was restored by Scott Teimann’s renowned Super Car Specialties in Portland MI to its configuration as originally raced
by Stan Antlocer, including the 421 Super Duty engine with dual inline Carter 4-barrel carburetors and unique exhaust headers built by George DeLorean, 10inch M&H Racemaster slicks
on Black painted steel wheels and graphics proclaiming Stan Long Pontiac sponsorship of the “World’s Fastest Tempest.” It holds an honored place in Pontiac’s storied drag racing history and stands as a tribute to the forward thinkers at Pontiac Engineering and racers like Stan Antlocer who competed with

their creations in the heat of that era’s great A/FX battles. As Lot# S137, it will cross the block on Saturday, January 26 during the 2013 Mecum Kissimmee Florida Auction. M

BIG TOP KISSIMMEE
If you’re familiar with our auction process here at Mecum, you know we always offer memorabilia – or what we have rightfully dubbed Road Art – in addition to the cars. Typically, we warm up each morning at every auction by offering 20 to 30 pieces of what we refer to as auction starters, and then we continue to offer two investment-grade pieces per hour throughout the entire auction. But with our Kissimmee Auction in January – everything is go big or go home, and Road Art is no exception. We couldn’t simply stick with the status quo for
a 10-day, 3,000-car auction. So as part of the world’s largest collector car auction, we are dedicating one full day exclusively to Road Art. Monday, January 21, will feature lot after lot of items including everything from pedal cars, gas pumps and automotiverelated porcelain, tin and neon signs and clocks, down to barber shop items, soda pop signs and coolers, and even country store, farm and diner pieces; there will undoubtedly be something for everyone. Road Art Monday will see at least 500 items cross the block, MECUM.COM
raising Kissimmee’s grand total of Road Art offerings to over 1,200 pieces. Now that is going big. We are still accepting topnotch and well-preserved, vintage Road Art consignments to be featured in our Kissimmee lineup. Lots will continue to fill up quickly for the January 18-27 auction, so interested consigners should send photos and descriptions of Road Art items to my email address, bob@mecum.com, or call me personally at (262) 275-5050 and I can provide you with more details. Photo taken without flash leaving dark, undefined areas
When a seller is able to provide Mecum Auctions with highquality, clear photographs of a consignment, it allows us to better promote the car on our website, in publications and across all platforms of advertising. In last month’s column, I touched on the importance of using supplemental lighting, aka, a camera flash, to improve the look of an engine compartment. Now that you have the “power plant” in focus and well lit, let’s focus on the area of a vehicle that might be the hardest to properly showcase – the interior. Most of the photographs that we receive of a consignment’s interior could use marked improvement. Admittedly, a cars cockpit, especially if it’s dressed in black, is little removed from a vinyl-covered cave. And of
interior, black holes are not the look to aim for. The easy solution is to use a flash. Most cameras today have a built-in flash. If your camera lacks a flash feature, sliding a removable one onto a camera’s hot shoe will allow you to light the interior fully. Suddenly, footwells and recessed instrument clusters will pop into life. No longer will the interior look like the inside of a cow’s stomach. One more tip – if a flash unit just isn’t in the cards, shoot the interior in open shade. Direct sun streaming into the interior is harsh
