DANA SAYS January’s Kissimmee sale was a spectacular event for Mecum Auction, kicking off 2010 with huge momentum. Once again, I would like to personally thank all of you who participated and helped to make it such a great success! Sunny skies and warm Florida weather greeted us for almost the entire event at the Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, and Mecum Auction experienced record numbers for Bidders, Consignors, and General Attendance. As a result the sell through rate for this auction was an astounding 71%! Looking forward to upcoming events, Mecum’s Spring Kansas City Auction is just around the corner. Located in the heart of downtown Kansas City, Bartle Hall is a spectacular facility that will house 500 cars under one roof for a fantastic two day sale on April 9-10. Additionally, the 23rd Annual Original Spring Classic (May 19-23), Mecum’s flagship Auction Event, is off to the races and has become THE collector car auction event of the year … expect to see over 1750 cars at the Indiana State Fairgrounds for this year’s “mega-event” in Indianapolis. Be sure to consign your cars early, pre-register to bid, and make plans to attend both Events, as amazing cars are being consigned daily!

KISSIMMEE KICKS OFF 2010

Packed House Brings Over $25 Million and Big Sales Increase Amid a crowd of 29,000 enthusiastic spectators and eager bidders, the Mecum Auction Company sold hundreds of vehicles ranging from high-end classics and muscle cars to exotic late models at the recent Kissimmee Auction, Jan. 28-31, 2010, at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Fla. Mecum reports total gross sales (excluding buyer’s premium) for the four-day Kissimmee Auction were $25.6 million, boasting a 71 percent sell-through rate. The sales leader was a pristine 1966 Riva Super Aquarama Series II Prototype that had a winning bid of $775,000. “We hosted a packed house at our annual Kissimmee Auction, which grew immensely in both bidder registration and sales this year,” said President Dana Mecum. “Compared to our 2008 Kissimmee event, our gross sales increased more than 60 percent. Mecum continues to bring a wide variety of collectible vehicles – including boats and motorcycles – and vintage memorabilia to enthusiasts worldwide.”

The Top 10 sales from the Kissimmee Auction (all sales figures reflect hammer prices) are:

1966 Riva Super Aquarama Series II Prototype (Lot S159).. $775,000 1935 Auburn 851 Boattail Speedster (Lot S176.1)............$376,000 1957 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible (Lot S133)..................$213,000 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible (Lot S160)................$180,000 1957 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible (Lot S123)..................$180,000 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible (Lot S135)................$180,000 1971 Dodge Hemi Charger (Lot F225)..............................$165,000 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible (Lot S114)................$140,000 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda Resto Mod (Lot S243)..............$135,000 1970 Plymouth Superbird Coupe (Lot S296)......................$125,000

MEET THE MECUM TEAM HAROLD GERDES is absolutely without question the “Magic Man” behind the Mecum curtain. Starting in 2001, Harold, our General Manager, sprang into action as the person who makes a substantial yet often unrecognized contribution to the daily operations. His responsibilities include event planning, staffing, negotiating contracts, and much more all allowing Mecum to produce a fabulous show time after time. Prior to Mecum Auctions, Harold owned an event planning company and was once a radio announcer. Mecum Auctions is fortunate to have such a dependable and dedicated individual on our team. If you ask the Mecum employees why they enjoy working for Harold they consistently comment, “It’s because he is an incredible people person and a true joy to work for.” M

MARK DELZELL, Mecum’s Lead Auctioneer, has proven to be the “Power House” within the Mecum Auction team for over twenty-three years. Mark started as a Ringman with Mecum Auctions at the very first Dana Mecum’s Original Spring Classic in 1988, and has participated in every Spring Classic thereafter. Mark always manages to captivate the crowd with his energetic chant heard throughout the auction. When asked what he feels is the most significant and positive change that Mecum has made, he responds, “What sets us apart are the high energy venues, family values, our TV show and finding the niche time after time.” M RUTH WATTONVILLE started her illustrious career with Mecum Auctions over twenty-three years ago. She will forever be recognized as one of the original employees who invented the wheel in the Mecum family dining room back in 1988. The office ran significantly different, as the paperwork was entirely done by hand. Ruth wore all the department hats as her duties included; receptionist, consignments, bidders, accounting, mailers and advertising. Even though the conditions were primitive, Ruth’s value and dependability shined through. Once the auction computer system emerged, Ruth naturally received all IT duties and responsibilities. Today, Ruth Wattonville is the onsite Office Manager at all Mecum Auction events. She is without question one of Mecum’s Most Valuable Team Players. M

It is very fitting that Mecum Auction’s venue for its Spring Auction Event is Bartle Hall Convention Center in Kansas City. Mecum has a long and successful history of holding collector car auctions in the Kansas City area, dating back to the 1990’s. During the past five years, Mecum Auction has experienced massive growth, and in 2009 Mecum offered and sold more collector cars at public auction than any of its national competitors. As such, it only makes sense that Mecum now hosts its Kansas City sale at one of the premier Convention Centers in the United States: Bartle Hall. In fact, Bartle Hall is a versatile, one of a kind complex, that offers over 380,000 square feet of column free exhibit space on one floor (that’s an area the size of 8 football fields) with ceiling heights of 33 to 42 feet. Interestingly, the expansion of Bartle Hall (over Interstate 670) resulted in the largest, column free convention environment in the world.

What does all of the above mean to Mecum Consignors, Bidders, and all the “Car People” who will be attending this nationally televised event (on Discovery’s HD Theater)? It means a spectacular, expansive, beautiful, indoor facility from which to experience a great car show and auction …. and the opportunity to sell one of your own classic cars or purchase the classic car of your dreams!! MECUM101

Education is key to buying a car at auction

Prior to the auction, nearly all cars to be offered are on the Mecum web site, www.mecum.com. If you’re not sure what kind of car interests you, the site allows you to search by year, make and model helping you narrow your area of interest. Once you’ve done that, doing your homework on that vehicle will arm you with the knowledge to make a good, sound buying decision. There are hundreds of books, web sites and forums for just about any car. Essential information includes knowing about the make and model you like, e.g. options available for that year, engine/transmission combinations; and you should have an understanding of how to decipher body trim tags, VIN tags and engine codes. You also should be aware of what to look for mechanically: can you determine if there is

evidence of bodywork, general wear, quality or level of restoration, etc? Keep in mind that many of these cars are 20-30-40-50 or more years old and require inspection to ensure you’re aware of what you’re buying. Getting to the auction early allows you to spend time looking over the cars that interest you. And if one shows up that was not previously listed, you have adequate time to review it. If you’re not comfortable with the inspection process, bring a friend or two to help. You can make a weekend of it. Remember that you will be making your purchase based on the inspection you do before the auction. The more thorough you are, the happier you will be with your new purchase. Nothing is more fun then going for a weekend cruise in a classic car. Enjoy the ride. M
