Medaille College concentrates on excellence in teaching, with an emphasis on personal attention to its diverse student body. Its curriculum provides a solid liberal arts and sciences foundation with early access to career-oriented education. The faculty and all of those involved in the mission of education challenge students and themselves to the highest possible standards of achievement, but that challenge is balanced by support for every individual student and a concern that each one succeeds.
Historical Overview Medaille College is an independent college committed to serving the higher education needs of Western and Central New York, and Southern Ontario. The College is located within the historic Olmsted Crescent in the heart of Buffalo, New York, with branch campuses in Amherst and Rochester. Medaille is known for its flexible delivery systems, offering Master’s, Bachelor’s, and Associate degrees in both traditional and accelerated formats. The Undergraduate College currently offers the Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Business Administration, Communication, Criminal Justice, Education (Elementary Education 1-6, Middle Childhood 5-9, Adolescent English 7-12 with Special Education, Adolescent Mathematics 7-12 with Special Education, and Adolescent Social Studies 7-12 with Special Education), English, Liberal Studies, Psychology, Sport Management, and Veterinary Technology. Associate degrees are offered in Liberal Studies and Veterinary Technology. Through its School of Education and School of Adult and Graduate Education, Medaille offers both undergraduate and graduate programs designed to meet the needs of adult learners. Degrees awarded include the Associate of Science in Business, Bachelor of Business Administration, Master of Business Administration, Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership, Master of Arts in Psychology, Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling, and Master of Science in Education. Named for Father Jean Pierre Medaille, founder of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Medaille College traces its roots to 1875, when the Sisters of St. Joseph founded an Institute to prepare members of the Order for teaching in diocesan schools. In 1937, the Institute received an absolute charter from the State of New York and was renamed Mt. St. Joseph Teachers College. In 1968, a charter was sought to create a new college that would be independent, nonsectarian, and coeducational. The State granted this charter and Medaille College was born. Many new degree programs were developed and student enrollment doubled in the 1970’s. This growth continued, and in 1985 construction was completed on a new science building. Residential housing was added in 1991 and the Kevin I. Sullivan Campus Center opened in April of 1994. Campus construction continued with the opening of the North Residence Hall (2001) and the South Residence Hall (2003). In addition, the Sullivan Campus Center has been expanded, renovations have been made to the Huber Hall Library, and major landscaping improvements have been made to the campus. Most recently, seven houses on Humboldt Parkway and Agassiz Circle have been remodeled as faculty and administrative office space and state-of-the-art classrooms. Medaille’s annual operating budget is now $48 million and the annual economic impact of Medaille on our community exceeds $138 million. In the past ten years, full-time faculty have increased from 45 to nearly 100, and the College’s enrollment has increased to nearly 300%. The total enrollment approaching 3,000 students makes Medaille the third largest private college in Western New York.

The Honorable Chris Collins Erie County Executive As County Executive, Chris Collins is focused on his Three Rs – reforming Erie County government, rebuilding the local economy, and ultimately, reducing taxes. Collins is committed to running Erie County like a business, making it more effective, efficient and responsive to hardworking taxpayers. The residents of Erie County elected Chris Collins as the seventh Erie County Executive on November 6, 2007. A businessman with 35 years of private sector experience, Collins won with 64 percent of the vote. For the last eight years, Collins has managed and is the sole investor of Cobblestone Enterprises LLC, a merchant bank that is focused on investing in local manufacturing companies. Since 1998, Cobblestone has invested in over 20 acquisitions that currently operate as ten separate platform companies. These companies currently have over 600 employees, including 500 in Western New York, with annual sales in excess of $80 million. Before creating Cobblestone, Collins founded Niagara Falls based industrial gear manufacturer Nuttall Gear Corporation in 1983, purchasing the assets of the Westinghouse Gear Division. The County Executive began his professional career with Westinghouse Electric in 1972. Collins has been active in the community, particularly with the Boy Scouts. He was chairman of the 2001 and 2005 National Jamboree Committee for the Greater Niagara Frontier Council Boy Scouts of America, and is serving as chairman for the 2010 Jamboree. The County Executive also served as chairman for the 2007 World Jamboree. Since 1999, Collins has volunteered his time as a mentor at the State University of New York at Buffalo Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership. Collins received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1972 and an MBA from the University of Alabama in 1975. The County Executive is married and has three children and two grandchildren. He lives in Clarence, NY.

Undergraduate Ceremony Speaker
Thomas Herrera-Mishler President and CEO, Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy Thomas Herrera-Mishler leads the Buffalo/Niagara region’s leading non-for-profit, membership-based organization, the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy, as president and CEO. The Conservancy is responsible for the maintenance and operations of Buffalo’s beloved Olmsted Park and Parkway System. Herrera-Mishler and his family moved to Buffalo from Wellesley, Massachusetts where he served as Executive Director of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. There, he was responsible for nearly doubling membership to 7,000, helping restore the Society’s Olmsted-designed headquarter estate grounds, and creating major improvements to the Annual Flower show, the largest cultural event in the northeast. Mexican-born, Herrera-Mishler obtained his Master of Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning, Urban Design Specialization from the University of Michigan in 1986. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Language & Literature with a Minor in Business Administration from Eastern Michigan University in 1982. It was while studying landscape architecture that Herrera-Mishler grew to admire Frederick Law Olmsted, the iconic designer of urban parks including Central Park in NYC and parks in major cities across the country. Buffalo’s own Olmsted system was designed beginning in 1868 and sits on the Register of National Historic Places. Herrera-Mishler’s portfolio includes the master plan for the National Zoo and Botanical Garden of Costa Rica. After serving as project landscape architect on various projects around the US and abroad, Herrera-Mishler moved into the non-profit sector in 1992, working as the community landscape architect for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society in Philadelphia, and later as executive director of Philadelphia’s Awbury Arboretum & Historic Estate, executive director of the Toledo Botanical Garden and director of Arlie Gardens in Wilmington, N.C. Thomas is a determined gardener, occasional chef, and voracious reader.

CANADIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM
AMERICAN NATIONAL ANTHEM
O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command.
Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light, what so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
With glowing hearts we see thee rise The True North strong and free:
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
From far and wide, O Canada, We stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada! We stand on guard for thee.
18
And the rockets’ red glare the bombs bursting in air gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

2009 C O M M E N C E M E N T The Academic Procession The academic procession of today’s Commencement exercises is made up of candidates for degrees, members of the faculty, members of the Board of Trustees, and members of the platform party marching in that order. After the ceremony, the order of the march is reversed. The order of march is in accordance with academic protocol which was established centuries ago when academic ceremonies were predominately directed by the clergy. In keeping with the familiar order of the religious procession, the younger and newer groups precede the older, and the place of highest honor is at the end of the procession.
Academic Symbolism
The Tradition of Academic Regalia The pageantry, tradition, and ritual of college and university commencement ceremonies in the United States originated more than 800 years ago in the medieval universities of Europe. The first academic degree recorded was conferred by the University of Bologna (Italy) in the middle of the twelfth century. The practice of conferring degrees spread from Bologna to other European universities such as the University of Paris, and then to Oxford and Cambridge. Medieval institutions of higher learning were traditionally administered by monastic orders, and students as well as their instructors wore the habits of monks to protect themselves from the cold of drafty rooms and corridors. In 1321, the University of Coimbra (Portugal) required all bachelors, masters, and doctors of theology to wear monastic gowns – the first such injunction recorded. Originally, the hood worn by those holding master’s degrees and doctorates was a head covering, the monk’s tippet. When caps came into fashion in the fifteenth century the hoods were draped down and back and ornamented with silk or velvet linings. On May 16, 1895, a delegation of representatives from various institutions convened at Columbia University to consider the question of academic attire in the United States. The deliberations of the conference resulted in the formulation of a unified system of academic apparel consisting of gowns, hoods, and caps to be worn by the graduates of any institution of higher learning in the United States. Adherence to this intercollegiate code of academic costume was voluntary; however, virtually all institutions with the exception of Harvard University and six others adopted it. The Intercollegiate Code specified that all graduates would wear black gowns, the pattern of which would vary according to the degree. Colored accessories were permitted to represent a particular degree or institution. Undergraduates were required to wear a severe, unornamented black robe with long pointed sleeves, an Oxford mortarboard cap, and a black tassel. The greatest degree of symbolism was represented by the hood which signified not only the degree of the graduate but also the institution from which it was conferred. The hoods were bordered in the appropriate faculty colors to designate the specified academic discipline of the graduate and linked with the official colors of the institution. In keeping with long established traditions, graduates of Medaille College continue to wear black robes with an Oxford mortarboard cap and black tassel.
The Mace Bearer The Mace Bearer carries a mace in the procession immediately preceding the President both entering and leaving the ceremony. The office of the Mace Bearer is purely ceremonial, and derives from the medieval times in England when an official such as the Lord of the Admiralty or the Chief Justice of the Court of Assizes, was taking office or opening his court and needed a bodyguard. Then the mace, a formidable weapon, was held ready to protect the person of the dignitary. From the sixteenth century in England and since colonial days in America, it has become a symbol of office only, and is carried by a distinguished member of the faculty.
