Alan Busuttil

Alan Busutill Skorba - Blue Mountains

Andy Busuttil, from the Blue Mountains west of Sydney is a man of many talents - multi instrumentalist, he plays many different genre of music but specialises is Middle Eastern and Balkan pitched music and percussion. Not only does he play the darbuka, he can also play clarinet, alto sax as well as a variety of other wind and percussion instruments. If that’s not enough he is also a renowned vocalist with a style that can move effortlessly between Anglo traditional and mawaal style. He has performed with a huge number of world class musicians and recorded over 20 CD’s. Currently he is performing with Skorba who have been achieving huge recognition around Australia. If you would like to learn more about him, visit his website (www.bluemountainsound.com.au) or log onto You Tube and type in either his name or Skorba. He believes that music comes from the heart and soul and that learning an instrument needs to be a joyful experience. Being a relative late starter - he didn't pick up an instrument himself until he was in his thirties - he is an advocate for “its never too late to learn” Everyone has some sort of talent and it can all be tapped into given the right circumstances. His workshops cater for players at all levels of skill and ambition. He is renowned for being able to stitch a workshop together that brings people of all skill levels to the point where they produce music that thrills them. In all of the following workshops there will be verbal introductions to the segments and there will be substantial opportunities for participants to practise the skills taught under Andy’s expert coaching. So lets have fun while we do these workshops together!

Unusual Rhythms Drum All Levels A Drum

SATURDAY - 14 APR 09.00 - 11.00

There are many unusual rhythms commonly played in music from around the World. Even a 4 count, which is known as an even rhythm and probably the most common one in Western music, can be made to sound unusual. However, it is fair to say that the most commonly recognized ‘unusual’ rhythms are those that are unusual to our ears but usual and commonly recognized by people from other parts of the World. ‘Usual’ and ‘unusual’ are definitely culturally biased terms. In this workshop Andy will be exploring unusual rhythms from the Middle East and the Balkan regions as well as Asia Minor. In this workshop you will learn:  To recognize the difference between even and odd rhythms.  To understand how even rhythms can be made to sound unusual  The difference between a pulse and a beat  How Balkan rhythms are formed out of combinations of 3 and 2 pulse.  How to both count and recognize odd rhythms intuitively.  To play odd rhythms as both a rhythm and lead player.

Beginner Drum Drumming All Levels A Drum

SUNDAY - 15 APR 09.00 - 11.00

When it comes to any drum no one in the World would sensibly claim to be a master. The greatest players are those who can stun us with their ability, intricacy and beauty of performance. What makes them even greater is that they regard themselves as learners until the day they die. In the beginner course we will:  Create some ‘introductory music’ together.  Explore the basics of percussion on the drum of your choice  Look at methods of holding and playing a drum.  Which fingers and parts of the hand are used to produce which sound  The difference between ‘doom’ and ‘tek’  How these sounds are combined to form rhythm and texture  Technique with a focus on darabuka but also exploring other percussion instruments.  Some basic Middle Eastern rhythms; their structure and place in music  Practice playing the basic strokes: doom, tek, ‘laff’, sak.

Drumming for Dancers Drumming All Levels A Drum

SUNDAY - 15 APR 15.00 - 17.00

Music in many parts of the World makes no sense until completed in its form by dance. Middle Eastern drumming is no different with only a small number of rhythms reserved especially for concert or ‘semai’: to be listened to rather than danced to. The special relationship between a percussionist and a dancer is a joy to see. It is ultimate communication reflected in the capacity of each to read the other: the nuances, flow, improvisational quality and skill that each will play off and inspire. Drumming for dance is a critical element of learning and performing in Middle Eastern music. In this workshop you will:  Learn a variety of the most common Middle Eastern dance rhythms you will often hear performed in belly dance  Explore the relationship between the drummer and dancer.  Learn how to ‘tie’ rhythms together to create drum and dance performance  Practice the skill of playing ‘tied’ rhythms as both a rhythm and lead player.

09

These last two workshops are known as ‘drum drills’ will focus on application of the skills learned in the earlier workshops. It’s an opportunity to practice skills previously learned, whether participants have learned them with Andy or other drummers or perhaps through being self-taught. Andy strongly believes that any music-making must be fun. That includes practicing which can often be regarded as tedious and boring. These workshops will be essentially practice-based rather than strictly instructional with lots of opportunities to work on skills by doing rather than through ‘listening’ and talking WORKSHOP NAME Type Level: Please bring       

Learn how to use the left hand (or right hand if you are left handed) to create intricate patterns supported by the rhythm keeping of the right hand. Learn the rhythms by both name and sound. Learn the basic rhythms used and how to make them sound beautiful and textured rather than repetitive. Understand how rhythm and lead percussionists play off each other Learn to move between rhythms fluently and with ease.

Dance has always been a big part of my life, Formally and informally, trained in Ballroom dancing and obtaining various medals through exams in the early 90’s, followed by a small stint of line dance I then discovered belly dance in 1998/1999 Taking lessons with Fatina, I promptly became an addict, I started teaching in 2002 under Fatina’s guidance in Cambridge, and formed NZs Desert Gypsy’s troupe in 2003 In my time dancing I have had the opportunity to do workshops with Barbara Wolfcamp, Shamira, Belissa, Belladonna, Karen Gherman of Fat Chance, Hossam and Serena Ramzy, & Amera Aid, as well as attending many Medanz workshops. My two biggest influences in belly dance are local artists, Fatina & Moonjelly, I enjoy watching different styles of belly dance but I will always have a love of the Cabaret/oriental styles http://www.youtube.com/user/nzbellydancer

MEDANZ Festival of Middle Eastern Dance · 13 - 16 April 2012 · DUNEDIN Amanda MaCauley Red Queens - Christchurch

A’Mal

Amanda had been dancing for about 9 years and teaching Oriental, Props, Combos and Choreography at the School of Contemporary Bellydance in Christchurch for over 5 years now. Her favourite styles are Oriental, Saiidi, Lebanese and slinky Tribal Fusion. She is also part of the Red Queens who put together quirky and offbeat bellydance cabaret and circus shows which incorporate anything from classical Egyptian to burlesque, folk, tribal and more. A former (only thanks to earthquake) restaurant regular in Christchurch, this mother of 2 and oriental goddess is one of the few to study oriental and tribal fusion to performance standards. Her dance personality is outgoing and playful with more than a touch of the dramatic. She also enjoys adding props such as cane, sword, wings and veil to her dance. Her passion is to learn learn learn more about this fantastic art form and the cultures which inspire the music and rhythms but most of all she feels that having the tools to improvise, feel and enjoy the music are at the core of why she dances and teaches.

Andy Bettis United Kingdom

Andy B A great opportunity has come up which we hope you are as excited as we are one of our members - Catherine Corcoran discovered that one of her past dance teachers - Andy Bettis - will be in Australia around festival time and is eager to come and teach here in NZ. So we are thrilled to have not two but THREE overseas teachers this year! Andy has been teaching folk dance since 1986 and has led workshops in Britain, France, Switzerland, Italy, Croatia, the USA, the Bahamas, Brazil and Australia. For ten years he co-focalised the Sacred/Circle Dance Department at the Findhorn Foundation and was extensively involved in their education programmes, including the ongoing Community dance group, sessions for visitors and short-term guests, and the annual Music, Song & Dance Festival. He has spent many years dancing, researching & teaching dances from the Balkans and has found these 'odd rhythms' to be a great way to move into a deeper appreciation of movement & dance. He finds there is something magical in finding the 'secret path' through the seemingly impenetrable beats and discovering the flowing dance pattern that brings it all together.

WORKSHOP NAME Type Level: Please bring Video Allowed?

Dancing to a Different Beat - Introductory. Technique All levels (as this is something new) lots of enthusiasm Yes Notes provided?

SUNDAY - 15 APR 11.15 - 13.15 Yes

Most of the music used for dance in 'The West' is in 'divide by two' rhythms, usually some form of 4/4 with a clear, steady, repetitive pattern of beats. This provides an easily accessible 'way in' for dancers & watchers alike and quickly sets up a recognisable framework within which they can work & play. However the great strengths of regular rhythms can also become limitations & restrictions, keeping the structural framework too simple to develop in richer and more creative directions. The music of the Balkans - Macedonia, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria and beyond - contains a huge range of rhythmic patterns that go way beyond the familiar 4/4. These include 5/4 (Padjuska), 7/8 (Lesnoto, Racenitsa, Syrtos), 9/8 (Karsilama, Tsourapia, Dipat), 11/8 (Osagovka, Patrounino), 17/8 (Pusteno) and many more, using the building blocks of these rhythms to construct more elaborate patterns and sequences. These are not just intellectual musical exercises, they are firmly grounded in the folklore traditions of the various regions and have evolved as dance rhythms, to be experienced and enjoyed by the body as well as the mind. My first workshops start off with recognising and identifying rhythm patterns, developing skills to hear the beat within the music and finding how to move in sync with it.

Dancing to a Different Beat - Advanced Technique Preferable that you have done the Intro course before coming to this class Yes Notes provided?

MONDAY - 16 APR 15.00 - 17.00 Yes

Following on from my Introductory Workshop, we build up a repertoire of rhythms and see how the simple building blocks of different timed steps combine to produce such a variety of patterns. The objective is to learn a number of relatively simple dances that are 'in the body' and can be danced freely and enjoyed without any counting!

Angie

Angela Hughes Arabian Rendezvous - Auckland Angie started dancing in 2000 as a student of Fatina (aka Liz Irvine) and was hooked from the very first lesson. In 2003 she began teaching with Liz within her Art of Bellydance School, becoming a senior teacher. She was also part of Liz’s Kashani Dancers. Then in 2009 Angie branched out on her own starting her own school Arabian Rendezvous. She has attended every MEDANZ festival since 2001 and was a committee member for 3 years. Angie lists amongst her teachers several national and international dancers and drummers including Karen Gerham (Fat Chance) Paulette Rees (Gypsy Caravan) Belladonna (Aust) , Hossum & Serena Ramzy, Yeow (Aust) , Moonjelly (NZ) Tanya (NZ) Fern (NZ) Ross Nixon (NZ) and Devi Mamak (Aust) to name but a few. Her love of the dance and the power, joy and self esteem it gives is just one of the reasons she teaches and likes to share with others. Check out her website: http://www.arabianrendezvous.co.nz

So You Can Dance the Dance - What Next? Choreography / Technique All Levels Veil, Pen, Paper and any other props you use Yes Notes provided?

SUNDAY - 15 APR 11.15 - 13.15 Yes

This workshop teaches a multilayered choreography suitable for beginners, but challenging enough to be interesting for all levels. Using this choreography, we then look at all the things which make dancing this in public more than a little challenging. Learn how to change it if you and your friends decide to dance this at a hafla - and only some of you turns up. We play with what to do when your veil decides to die, to tear, or simply disappear altogether. We work out how to dance it in pairs, trios, or as teams. A good part of the fun of this workshop is discovering that you can cope when you're out on a dance floor and your teammates decide to change the steps; or the floor you have to dance on is only bathmat sized, and you're used to practicing in a large hall. Another useful part of this workshop is giving dancers the tools to practice large scale choreographies in a tiny flat, or dance at a friend's party, learning how to make your dance do anything you want it to, for one dancer, or many.

Macarena - Middle Eastern Style Choreography All Levels Water, Pen, Paper Yes Notes provided?

MONDAY - 16 APR 15.00 - 17.00 Yes

A vibrant, hugely entertaining, choreography, danced to an instantly recognizable piece of music, given a Middle Eastern treatment by Mezdeke. This dance incorporates most of the basic bellydance moves, making it an excellent practice dance. It is also a challenge for intermediate dancers as isolation and timing add hugely to the effect. This dance came about because of the desire of new students to learn a choreography they could use to practice all the moves, but quickly became one of our troupes favourite performance pieces. It always brings a hugely positive crowd response, and makes all the dancers smile as well.

MEDANZ Festival of Middle Eastern Dance · 13 - 16 April 2012 · DUNEDIN Candice Frankland Phoenix Bellydance - Auckland

Candice

Candice is an award-winning belly dancer who has appeared on TV, in magazines, on Rugby World Cup 2011 stages and even at the NZ Breakers games. Candice has been trained by some of the best local and international dancers, including several of the Bellydance Superstars, Egyptian Teachers (most recently Dina), and fantastic local teachers while in South Africa and NZ. As an instructor, she upholds the integrity and tradition of this beautiful art form while incorporating her signature style. Candice’s teaching style is well structured, easy-to-follow instruction to help students develop their natural feminine grace and learn complicated movements, and is always plenty of fun! Candice’s students are made up of women of all ages, fitness levels and cultures! The passion, intensity, and complexity of the movements, music, and style of this dance has driven Candice to work hard to explore the deep folkloric roots of Middle Eastern Belly Dance and create compositions with influences from nature, other cultural dances, and contemporary concepts. She is an eternal student of dance!

Are you a Queen, Goddess, Entertainer, Storyteller, or a combination? This workshop is about dance personality profiles. Dancing allows us to express another side of ourselves which may look very different to our everyday personality. Knowing your dance persona is a fun and interesting topic that allows you as an individual to understand your strengths and weaknesses and develop them into something that lets you to shine through your performances. I have developed this workshop based on years of trying to understand myself as a dancer, observing students and professional dancers and watching them grow into individual performers. Each person has a unique factor that makes audiences enjoy their performances, and sometimes audiences aren’t sure why a dancer was so much more enjoyable than others and often it’s because the dancer has settled into who she is when she dances, she knows what expressions she can present well and looks utterly at ease while she is performing. Knowing yourself is an incredibly important step in becoming a better dancer.

Doreen Bestmann Auckland

Dori

I am an oriental dancer at heart, however I have studied both folk and tribal group improvisation styles to performance level and have dabbled in the odd bit of fusion as well. I originally started classes with Suher in Whitianga and upon moving to Christchurch joined the School of Contemporary Belly Dance where I studied with a range of teachers and later started teaching regular classes as well. Throughout my time in Christchurch and through attendance at MEDANZ festivals I have enjoyed learning from the many talented and knowledgeable dancers New Zealand has to offer, including Gendi, Zummarad, Yuri, Fatina, Kahmir, Fern and many others. I have recently spent four years in England teaching, learning and attending major festivals with dancers from all over the world, such as Fifi Abdou, Raquia Hassan, Randa Kamel (Egypt), Artemisia (Belgium), Leila Haddad (France), Horacio and Beata Cifuentes (Germany), Jim Boz and Fathiem (USA). Since returning in 2010 I have been based in Auckland where I have been immersing myself in the local dance community, attending classes and performing throughout Auckland when there is time to fit it all in. I currently perform, teach and party regularly with Phoenix Belly Dance. When teaching my focus is on helping students develop good technique and a feeling for the style while keeping classes interactive and fun.

Back to Basics - now with feedback !!! SUNDAY 15 APR Technique 15.00 - 17.00 Advanced to Beginner – ideally with a minimum of one or two ‘terms’ of basic belly dance classes At least one prop (ideally a range). Happy to try to accommodate large props (e.g. wings) but this will depend on space so come prepared. Yes Notes provided? No

RESTRICTED NUMBER OF PLACES AVAILABLE

This workshop will cover some of the technique which I (and likely many others) consider to be the basic, foundation movements of belly dance. The aim of this workshop is to help you go back to these movements and really work on them so you walk out more confident in them than before. The key focus will not be on breaking down of technique but on providing one-on-one feedback. This class is not just aimed at beginners – if you are more experienced ask yourself when you last took the time to really make sure that your basics are solid? If you teach when have you last spent 10mins checking out hip drops instead of your students’? I have been to a wide range of beginner classes and workshops all throughout my 10 or so year dance time and every time I go I learn a lot about my own dance and where my strengths and weaknesses are. So this is your opportunity to do the same. This class will require a fair bit of self motivation to keep going without someone in front to follow or lots of changes to help our shortening attentions spans but it will be interactive, insightful and help you be a better dancer than you were before you walked in. (if you are a true technique masochist it might also generate homework – but that’ll be optional).

Getting to know MEDANZ Interactive Chat All welcome Any questions you might have - and your lunch!

MONDAY - 16 APR 12.00 - 12.45

This is a special, free “lunchtime workshop” to get to know a bit more about MEDANZ. The workshops will cover some information of how we got to where we are today and how the organisation is run – not in a theoretical sense but in a day-to-day what’s happening all the time sense. We’ll also have a look at the constitution and break some of it down into language that’s not needed for legal documents. The aim of this workshop is to help, especially new members, understand what MEDANZ is all about, how we work, and how members can get involved.

FR EE

The aim is for this workshop to be more focussed on discussion and sharing than it is on people being presented with lots of information to listen to.

25 Pip E-Lysaah Red Queens - Christchurch

Pip E-Lysaah

Pip began with ballet and moved through Modern Jazz, yoga, Turkish Belly Dance and then onto Tribal Style. She quickly took to this variation on Middle Eastern dance combining it with her ballet and modern dance training and yoga background to isolate and control her movements. Pip is a regular at the Carousel Cabaret in Wellington, a rostered performing member of the MoonJelly restaurant team and our very own internationally performing star with events in Las Vegas, Portland and Toronto. She teaches tribal and tribal fusion style at the School of Contemporary Bellydance in Christchurch and independently in Wellington, has taught nationally and internationally and regularly directs/produces/choreographs belly dance shows such as the Red Queens. It is Pip’s stylised use of muscle control and isolation over theatrical bellydance movements and genuine admiration of her bellydance crew that has created her individual style. Choosing to extend yourself by trying something new, however humbling can lead to greater personal growth - Pip is - and always will be - a beginner.

Teacher Training - its not all fun and games Mostly lecture, little choreo, some technique All dancers who like a challenge and are interested Yoga Mat or Towel No Notes provided?

FRIDAY 13 APR 13.00 - 14.00 Yes

Sometimes as dancers we find ourselves in the position of being the most experienced dancer around and being put in front of a class where we feel ready or not. Pip will draw on her experience as a teacher and her own teacher training to take you through a version of a lesson plan for beginners (covering basic belly dance, oriental and tribal), a few rules and ethics that she tries to stick to, and some essential factors that she recommend are covered in a term of beginners belly dance. This is less a workshop on what you should do and more a view on what you ‘could’ do, along with a little ethical guidance based on her view of the world. Most suitable for dancers who find themselves in the position of being belly dance teachers, this is not a workshop for experienced teachers, her intention of not to teach current teachers how to „suck eggs‟ but to give some guidance to brand-new or would-like to teachers

Iman

Christine Haviland Tribal Spirit / Spirit Inc - Auckland

Christine has been dancing since her introduction to Orientale by Liz Irvine in Auckland 1999. Her first troupe experience was as part of Kashani Dancers. She was quickly hooked on Bellydance but by chance came across a Fat Chance Belly Dance video and knew immediately that Tribal Bellydance was where she belonged. She set about learning what she could about Tribal and alongside fellow tribal junkie and duet partner Debbie Hand formed “Iman”. She also decided to keep the name Iman as her dance name as appropriate for her style and the history of her dance. She has been fortunate to have studied with some amazing tribal teachers - Susan Brown of Tribe! (Kerikeri), Karen Gehrman (Fat Chance) Lily of Tribal Kinesis, Sashi and Deb Rubin (USA) as well as Australian Devi Mamak, Dee Thomson (Tribal Blossoms) and Nina (Gypsy Rain). In 2009 she commenced her overseas studies with Master Teacher Paulette Rees Denis of Gypsy Caravan and has gained her Teacher Training and Collective Soul - Lvl 1. She hope to continue her studies this year travelling to the States to continue in the Gypsy Caravan format with Paulette at her studios in Oregon. She formed Tribal Spirit and Spirit Inc in the hope of awakening the love of Gypsy Caravan in New Zealand. She believes that it is a personal choice for dancers where we gravitate toward - hers just happens to be Gypsy Caravan. At the core we are all Bellydancers - enjoying the love of dance - dance from the heart and limited only by our imagination. For further information check out her web site: www.thespiritinc.com

Kenneth Chan Christchurch

Kenny

Kenny’s passion for Middle Eastern Dance originated from a keen interest in Arabic music. He stumbled upon a music CD of belly dance music in 2004 without really knowing much about the dance but he was captivated by the rhythms, instrumentation and melodies from the start. Kenny’s collection of belly dance and Arabic music grew tremendously before he ventured into giving belly dance a go. Ever since the, Kenny was joked and has not looked back - all thanks to a chance encounter with a music album on grey afternoon in the middle of winter. Kenny has learnt bellydance with the School of Contemporary Belly Dance in Christchurch under Zumarrad, Yurie Matsui, Gendi Tanner and later on with Claribel of Singapore who has strong connections to Egyptians master teachers. Kenny’s passion is Raks Sharki but he has also had learning experiences and still maintains a strong interest in folk dance styles of the Middle East as well as ATS.

Sha’bi Choreography All Water Bottle - Notebook & pen Yes

SATURDAY 14 APR 11.15 - 13.15 .

What is Sha’bi Music? It represents something truly Egyptian in character and stands apart from the highly commercialised entertainment business which sanitises and packages songs and stars (sourced from Al Ahram Weekly Online) Sha’bi music can be described as the voice of the homeless, the orphaned, the sickly and the unemployed. The themes Sha’bi artists sing about can be grounded in society’s ills which are often raw: friendship and betrayal; a fall from grace; a test of a parent’s unconditional love. In Sept 2011, Kenny had the wonderful opportunity to study with the Egyptian master Yousry Sharif in Singapore. This choreography was actually made up on the spot during the workshop by Yousry. The title of the song - Kazzab - means liar. Needless to say even a dancer who has little or no understanding of the Arabic language would be able to figure out the gist of the songs lyrics from the moves in the choreography. This sha’bi piece promised to be catchy, soulful, fun and filled with anguish - all at the same time.

This is an original choreography based on Kenny’s interpretation of the song by Emad Sayyah (Modern Belly dance from Lebanon: The Enchanted Dance) It is a light hearted cute piece couple with a slice of cheekiness. The dances features and entrance and a section with veil work before discarding the veil partway thru the dance. This dance is suitable to be performed as a solo piece or a group. The moves used in this choreography are not complex and this workshop will suit a range of dance abilities.

Rachael

Rachel Lundy Rachel Lundy Bellydance - Dunedin

'Rachael was dragged along to her first Belly Dance lesson at the age of 12, with her mum. Not really knowing what belly dance entailed, she couldn't imagine any thing more 'lame' then dancing around half naked with her mum. 9 years on, and still dancing, she couldn't imagine her life without it ("thanks mum!"). Rachael has a passion for Oriental and contemporary expressional pieces. She has studied with Christchurch's School of Contemporary Belly Dance, an institution well known for its professionalism and varied dance styles, for over eight years. She has only recently parted ways with Christchurch in order to study at Dunedin University, but still makes time for her true passion; performance. Rachael has had several years of teaching experience, but her real strength is performance, improvisation and choreography. She specializes in Oriental style belly dance, but also dabbles in Cabaret and Burlesque for a more versatile repertoire. Rachael is also an experienced public performer, having held two permanent restaurant gigs and has worked as the primary entertainment at Weddings, Birthday Parties and Hen's nights in Christchurch. She has recently become involved in The Box Fort Collective, a group of young and talented circus performers, dancers, artists, musicians and just generally awesome creative people. Saffron

Gabriella first became interested in belly dancing in 1998. Starting off as a belly baby and staying there for some time due to other commitments. Later she joined the troupe 'Cairo Cats' where she began to perform to the outside world. She says she dances because it makes her feel happy, alive and confidant and as her name suggests, spicy and expensive! Gabriella's love of dancing has inspired some beautiful costumes, made possible due to her being a seamstress before becoming a Domestic Goddess. Belly dancing has helped her through some difficult times.

Unfortunate Repercussions

Bronwyn Mohring, Martin Fastier, Alan Powell, Tanata Stedman Unfortunate Repercussions - Dunedin

The four “Unfortunates “ may also be joined by other members Nicola Collie and David Stiles. Between us we have been to workshops with Alan Burden, Yeow, Matt Stonehouse and Hossam Ramsey. Our varied musical backgrounds include a BA in Music, a background in piano and musical theory and a member of a rock covers band. The UR are a musical group who drum in a Tribal Style. This does not mean we only drum for tribal dancers but more that we work together as a group. We are not hierarchical but instead all contribute in an equally important way. We have not found this co-operative tribal feel in other drumming styles we have encountered. This means our style and rules of play have developed in a unique way that works for us and we love it. We would love to share out joy in making music with you

Victoria

Victoria Escaip Kiwi Iwi Oceanic Belly Dance - Christchurch

Victoria, a founding member of Kiwi Iwi Oceanic Belly Dance Troupe, has been dancing for over 13 years and has learned a variety of Belly Dance styles from many well known local and international teachers including Gendi, Cassandra Shore, Hadia, Karen German, Denise Enan, Melusina, Devi Mamak, Deb Rubin, Lily Tsai, Miriam Peretz, Ansuya, Suhaila Salimpour, and by MEDANZ 2012 she will have done an eight-hour seminar with Rachel Brice! Victoria has taught a variety of Belly Dance workshops in New Zealand, Mexico –her native country, and Hong Kong. Victoria is mainly a Tribal dancer but she loves fusing Belly Dance with other dance styles and created the popular Salsa Fusion combos which she has taught in different occasions, including Medanz 2010 and 2011. This year she brings Merengue to the Belly Dance scene in New Zealand... a very HOT Latin rhythm that everybody will love! Victoria also loves traditional Middle Eastern music and, being an accomplished ziller, she gets enormous pleasure when she dances and plays her zills to the sensual music of the Middle East which originally drew her to Belly Dance... She has been credited by many dancers for being an inspiration and “opening their zills’ channel”.

SATURDAY 14 APR 09.00 - 11.00 Yes

Playing zills adds a very exciting element to your dance. However, while execution is very important, variety is one of the factors that make one performance stand out from another; this is true for your zills playing as well as for your dance. Playing only the standard triplets when you dance won’t do it if what you want is your performance to shine. In this workshop we’ll go beyond the basics and we’ll learn a variety of zills patterns. We’ll do lots of drilling and then we’ll add these patterns to different dance combinations with increasing difficulty. You will leave this workshop inspired and confident to create your own zills patterns for your dance!

MEDANZ Festival of Middle Eastern Dance · 13 - 16 April 2012 · DUNEDIN Brigid Kelly Christchurch

Zumarrad

Zumarrad has studied the art of Middle Eastern Dance since 1998. She is known as a sparkling, engaging and emotive performer. While not a purist, Zumarrad views belly dance as a Middle Eastern cultural expression and art form first and foremost. As a dancer, her passion is for Egyptian raqs sharqi and folklore. As a teacher, she focuses on imparting deeper knowledge and strong technique. Her first and most influential teacher was Gendi Tanner, the South Island's premier oriental dancer for many years. She pursues study wherever possible with reputable international teachers. These have included Dr Mo Geddawi, Denise Enan, Cassandra Shore, Hadia of Canada, Amera Eid of Sydney, Amel Tafsout of Algeria, Caroline Evanoff and Randa Kamel of Cairo, and Jennifer Allen of Glasgow. In 2010 she attended the International Belly Dance Conference of Canada in Toronto as an invited speaker on New Zealand belly dance in a globalised context.

SATURDAY 14 APR 09.00 - 11.00

Arabesques add elegance, romance and flair to our stock of oriental and folkloric dance movements, but too often we put them in the too-hard basket. You’re missing out if you do! Our arabesques are so much more varied than the daunting ballet versions. Zumarrad will break down the oriental arabesque from toes to fingertips, showing how to stand and turn on one leg with confidence. She’ll teach many variations, drills and – here’s the good bit combinations that draw on everything from Golden Age to Modern Cairo style that you can add to your repertoire. She will help you develop your demi-pointe and show variations to suit both high-risers and earth-bound souls.

Invaders of the Heart: an Introduction to Banat Mazin Ghawazee dance Technique All Levels Zills (Optional) NO Notes provided?

SUNDAY 15 APR 09.00 - 11.00

Yes

When we first start to research belly dance, we often read about the ghawazee, those invaders of the heart who captivated 19th century Western tourists to Egypt. The best-known of the ghawazee families today are the Mazins of Luxor, whose dance style is sometimes thought to be the oldest style of Egyptian belly dance we can still see performed. Khairiyya Mazin is the youngest of the famous Mazin sisters and until recently was the only family member still dancing. Zumarrad will teach some typical moves and traditional performance patterns of this completely improvised style, drawing on her study with Cassandra Shore, who studied with Khairiyya in 2010, and her own close observations of footage of Khairiyya and her sisters in performance. Then we’ll work on putting them together in our own improvised piece! Ghawazee dancers work in a group to mesmerising and delightful effect. The movements they use are simple and fun to do.

The Lissa Fakir Experience Lecture All levels Open minds! And perhaps something you like to eat or drink.

NO

Notes provided?

SUNDAY 15 APR 15.00 - 17.00 Yes

Om Khalsoum, the Lady, the voice of Egypt: many dancers are afraid to dance to her music, scared they won’t do it justice. Many are disconcerted, even disappointed, when they finally hear her sing. What is all the fuss about and why does this music even matter? Often when we hear Om Khalsoum it’s a snippet of a far longer piece of music, and that little cut doesn’t give us much of the real experience behind the legend. In this workshop we get a chance to listen to one of her live recordings IN ITS ENTIRETY. You’ll hear her orchestra play the familiar melodies of the beautiful Lissa Fakir (Do you remember?), so beloved of dancers, as they were originally arranged. You’ll hear the way the audience responds to the melodies and the voice. You’ll be transported on a musical wave, a real journey, by Om Khalsoum and her musicians. You may even experience a flash of tarab! Stretch out… read along with the lyrics … or just relax, with a wine, a coffee or tea, and bathe in the Lissa Fakir experience. This workshop will demystify this music and help you feel less daunted by the songs of the great tarab singers. You will develop more feeling for how these classic pieces work, which will carry into your dance today. At the end, you still might not be an Om Khalsoum fan, but you will have a far greater appreciation and understanding of Arabic music. Participants are asked to commit to this workshop fully, to open themselves up to listening, to respect the tutor and the other participants by not chattering while the song is playing, and to remain for the entirety of the workshop

MEDANZ Festival of Middle Eastern Dance 路 13 - 16 April 2012 路 DUNEDIN

We need volunteers for the 2012 MEDANZ Dunedin Festival. Helpers are required for the Raks Samimi show, the information booth and heaps of other bits and pieces that will help make the weekend run smoothly. Some teachers will require help with their workshops. This entails amongst other things checking off the participants, making sure they have a name sticker and maybe helping with the sound system. So if you are interested or want to know more please contact Chief Angel Dianne Thompson at bengaleez@kinect.co.nz I will acknowledge you within a week. Let me know what you would like to help with and when you could donate some spare time during the festival and I will liaise with you just as soon as I have a formulated plan
