Introduction Welcome to the Faculty of Medicine at Lund University - a faculty that strives to understand, explain and improve our world and human health. In close cooperation with agents within public healthcare and medicine, we aim to contribute to increasing knowledge that is highly relevant to human health. We do this through education and research of the highest quality in cooperation with wider society. Our activities are characterised by great international ambitions through participation in strategic international networks, teaching staff and student exchanges, internationalisation of courses and international research collaborations.

The Faculty of Medicine The Faculty of Medicine is one of eight faculties or scientific disciplines at Lund University. The Faculty offers a wealth of research, postgraduate and undergraduate education programmes in medicine and health sciences. 2,800 fulltime students are enrolled in eight degree programmes, 1000 postgraduate research students and 1,300 employees. The Faculty consists of six departments that pursue research and education in Lund and Malmö, offering a stimulating environment for all students, with research that ranges over a broad field from experimental research to clinical research, closely involving patients.

The Faculty is closely associated with Skåne University Hospital, which has two locations, one in Lund and one in Malmö. There is a research centre associated with each of the two hospital locations of Skåne University Hospital, the Biomedical Centre (BMC) at Lund and the Clinical Research Centre (CRC) in Malmö. There are three further research and training centres, the teaching hospital in Helsingborg, the Health Sciences Centre, which provides research and teaching in nursing and midwifery, occupational therapy and physical therapy, and Medicon Village, which is a venue for research, innovation and business development in the field of life sciences.

International Office The International Office at the Faculty coordinates international activities in close cooperation with the educational programmes. We assist and support prospective and current international students and students at the Faculty wishing to spend time abroad within their studies. We serve as a link between the Faculty and the partner university and between student and teacher or clinical/ laboratory supervisor.

The international coordinators will assist you with practical issues related to your studies at Lund. An international coordinator will help each exchange student with all questions related to the exchange process. International Buddy Group Students at the Faculty of Medicine run a buddy group for all international students. The buddy group organises social activities throughout the semester, providing a perfect opportunity for visiting students to get to know our home students.

DATA COLLECTION FOR RESEARCH PROJECT OR MASTER THESIS PROJECT Exchange students can sign up for a short or long research project of 10 or 20 weeks, equals 15 and 30 ECTS respectively. Shorter or longer projects are also possible. Medicine Students from partner universities are offered participation in three clinically based courses in English. In addition to these courses it is also possible to join a research group for data collection towards a Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis. General Admission Requirements Students must have completed at least three years of study towards a Master in Medical Science, including at least one course in basic clinical medicine, to be considered for the clinical courses outlined below. Students must possess basic knowledge concerning the physical examination of patients. Preference is given to students coming from partner universities. SURGERY Course period: Autumn semester 12 weeks (SeptemberNovember) Credits/ECTS: 18 credits After completion of the course the student should be able to identify patients with conditions/problems related to certain defined clinical situations. For each of these specified clinical situations the student should be able to describe and explain: • Patient care • How to examine the situation • Important differential diagnoses • Prevention and therapy • Pathophysiological mechanisms The course is based on problem-based learning, seminars and overview lectures. The students are assigned to different clinical sections. They will participate under guidance in OR, ER, endoscopy and out-patient clinic. The students are instructed to establish and complete a portfolio as part of the examination. ELECTIVE STUDY IN SURGERY Course period: Autumn semester 8 weeks (NovemberJanuary) Credits/ECTS: 12 credits The course is offered as a freestanding course to incoming exchange students and is built on the international course in surgery. The course is a specialised continuation of the international course in surgery in which students gain

practice in taking a position on a current issue in surgery and evaluating texts in surgery related to it. The general objective of the course is to enable students to increase their ability to evaluate research in surgery. On completion of the course, students shall be able to: • identify and define a relevant issue in surgery, and formulate a specific question and account for an appropriate method based on the issue • identify relevant texts and provide a general summary of them OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY Course period: Spring semester 12 weeks (FebruaryApril) Credits/ECTS: 18 credits After completion of the course the student should be able to identify patients with conditions/problems related to certain defined clinical situations (see course content). For each of these specified clinical situations the student should be able to describe and explain: • • • • •

patient care how to examine the situation important differential diagnoses prevention and therapy pathophysiological mechanisms

The course is based on problem-based learning, casebased seminars and overview lectures. The students are assigned to various clinical sections of the Department. The students will train the gynecological examination technique in sessions with “professional patients” and in the skill centre Practicum they will have opportunity to use gynecological examination models and child birth models. They will participate under guidance in labor ward, ultrasound department, out-patient clinics and operating theatre. CLINICAL PRACTICE The Faculty of Medicine at Lund University offers a limited number of clinical placements at the region’s University hospitals to students coming from foreign universities. Students must have completed their core clinical module in the subject area they apply to. Preference is given to students coming from partner universities.

Course period: 4-week placement, max 2 placements per student (total of 8 weeks) throughout the calendar year. Start date always the first Monday of the month. Credits/ECTS: 6 credits per 4-week placement Instruction and Examination: Instruction is comprised of clinical rounds and case discussions. Students are evaluated in their clinical milieu as well as through logbook notes, written reflection and oral exams. The course does not include theoretical components or lectures. Departments: Placements are available in varied clinical areas and are subject to change. Please see the course information online for an updated list of openings for each academic year.

DATA COLLECTION FOR PROJECT OR THESIS WORK Exchange students can apply for a short or long research project. The student can choose to be examined at Lund University or at home university. Nursing and Midwifery The Nursing programme on Bachelors level and the Specialist Nursing programmes on advanced level are offered in Swedish. Shorter clinical placements can be offered to a limited extent with supervision in English to exchange students coming from a partner university. Placements on bachelors level are a mix of hospital and primary care units. From 2017 a course in leadership for nurses on bachelors level will be offered in English where partner students will follow the course together with the Swedish students.

On advanced level Midwifery and specialist nursing programmes are offered to students with a Bachelor´s degree in Nursing. The specialist programmes on advanced level are: Acute Care, Prehospital Emergency Care, Anesthesia Care, Midwifery, Pediatric Care, Primary Health Care, Intensive Care, Oncological Care, Theatre Care, Mental Health Care and Elderly Care. Several of the programmes are part of wider networks offering shorter intensive courses and placements. We offer several courses in Gerontology in English on masters level.

Radiography The Radiography programme welcome students for an Erasmus programme developed for partner universities within the Erasmus Radiography Group.

The 13 week-course combines both theory and practice within Radiography and Patient Care in Neuroradiology.

Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology offer a course in English called Theoretical Course in Audiology and Speech and Language Therapy, where international recognised researchers are invited to lecture. Priorities are given to students from partner universities but all students are welcome to apply to the course on www.universityadmissions.se.

Students from partner universities are nominated by their home university. Students are also welcome to pursue their thesis research at the department.

Physiotherapy The three year Bachelor degree programme in Physiotherapy is taught entirely in Swedish. Clinical placements, with English speaking supervisors, can be offered in a limited

capacity. Students are also welcome to pursue their thesis research at the department.

Master´s Programme in Medical Science We offer a Master´s Programme in Medical Sciences targeting student with a background in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, and Nursing. The programme is theoretical and research based. Several courses are offered in English and open to partner universities such as:

Stem Cell Biology Course period: Spring semester 20 weeks (JanuaryJune) Credits/ECTS: 30 credits The Preparatory Programme in Stem Cell Biology offers students at the advanced level the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of stem cell biology through specialised education and research experiences provided by the Research School in Stem Cell Biology and Lund Stem Cell Center-affiliated research groups. This programme covers the central concepts of stem cell biology from the laboratory to the clinic through lectures, seminars, and journal clubs, and also provides hands-on research experiences through a student-driven, individual scientific research project. The educational part exposes the students to topics such as the basic principles of stem cell biology, key technologies utilised in stem cell research, research ethics, and career pathways inside and outside academia. Lectures and seminars are held in close collaboration with the Preparatory Course in Cancer Biology (VMFN26) and thereby provide unique insights into research at the interface between the cancer and stem cell fields.

In addition to the theoretical parts, the programme provides the students with an individual scientific research project in one of the Lund Stem Cell Center-affiliated research groups, thereby allowing the students to actively participate in ongoing research activities in excellent stem cell science laboratories. Upon completion of the programme, the graduates will be well prepared for future doctoral studies and uniquely positioned to develop successful careers within stem cell biology or related fields. In that way, the programme promotes excellence in undergraduate education and hence forms a basis for future recruitment of stem cell scientists to Lund University. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Bachelors in science, medicine or engineering alternatively completion of relevant course work corresponding to 180 ECT. Proof of English language skills (e.g. TOEFL or IELTS test).

Cancer Biology Course period: Spring semester 20 weeks (JanuaryJune) Credits/ECTS: 30 credits The Preparatory Programme in Cancer Biology offers students at the advanced level the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of cancer biology through specialised education and research experiences provided by the rich cancer research environment of Lund University’s faculties of Medicine, Natural Science and Engineering. This programme covers both basic cancer biology and translational cancer research such as biomarker studies. There is also lectures and seminars for orientation in clinical disciplines including oncology, surgery and pathology. Besides lectures, seminars, and journal clubs, the programme provides hands-on research experiences through a student-driven, individual scientific research project. Also, we discuss innovation and career pathways inside and outside academia. Lectures and seminars are

held in close collaboration with the Preparatory Course in Stem Cell Biology (VMFN25), providing unique insights into research at the interface between the cancer and stem cell fields. Upon completion of the program, the graduates will be well prepared for future doctoral studies and uniquely positioned to develop successful careers within the cancer fields. In that way, the programme promotes excellence in undergraduate education and hence forms a basis for future recruitment of cancer researchers to Lund University. Master´s Programme in Public Health The Master’s programme in Public Health is a two-year (four semesters) full-time master’s programme taught entirely in English. While there are a limited number of

openings, we welcome exchange students from partner universities to apply. All lectures are held in Malmö at the Clinical Research Centre (CRC).
