Media Art Festival Arad is a kinema ikon project, with a focus on experimentation in visual media, as well as sound and performance in their ludic forms, which are/ may also be technological, hybrid, digital, analog, self-consciously redundant. 2014 / M.A.F.A.1: R.A.M / Random Access Memory location: Art Museum Arad media: photography, video, audio installations, net.art motto: „any byte of memory can be accessed without touching the preceding bytes” The premise of the exhibition is the ubiquitous presence of photography in the contemporary visual landscape. Exhibition components: photography, projections and video installations, interactive installations, net.art + the permanent collection of the Arad Art Museum. The invited artists proposed direct interventions within the museum space. Each project was designed independently, yet to be viewed in dialogue with the permanent collection.
2015 / M.A.F.A.2: R.E.M.X Rapid Eye Movement location: Atrium Mall Arad, Art Museum Arad, MNAC Bucharest media: multimedia installations, video, sound works motto: „No matter how fast you are, there’s always someone faster” Since the first, 2014 edition of the festival received enthusiastic although fewer than desired visitors, for the second, 2015 edition, we decided to move the art to the one place in town that is most beloved by its inhabitants: the mall. Inside store no. 112, on the 1st floor of Atrium Mall Arad we exhibited video and multimedia installations, photography, object-based work, video projections and sound installations.
2016 / M.A.F.A.3:
DADADA

After a long journey, with a stop-over at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest, the Festival returned to the Arad Art Museum. Its title, DADADA, resonated with the 100th anniversary of the Dada movement. Although intentional, all ties were nonetheless accidental. The main exhibition focused on the relationship between word and image, via ludic media-based explorations, and the museum as archive.
2017 / M.A.F.A.4: CINEMA

At the core of the festival, a group of site-specific installations turned the main cinema screening hall into a gallery space. Installations and projections took over, populated, (even colonised?) the cinema halls by day, and haunted them by night. They implicated the spectators, making them accomplices, ambushed them, catching them by surprise. Meanwhile, the kinema ikon gallery at the Arad Art Museum was turned into a cinema, beaming experimental film en loop.

De Rerum Natura
location: CMA, Natural History Museum, Arad Art Museum media: multimedia installations, video, AV performance, live concert motto: „Cedit enim, rerum novitate extrusa, vetustas semper.” Lucretius
The central exhibition proposed interjections and intersections with and within the galleries and displays of the city’s Museum of Natural History. Working with “unconventional” spaces has become characteristic to our approach, although these gestures should not be seen in opposition with white cube aesthetics. Rather, they are reactive positions, gentle yet steady disruptions of current parameters, circumstances, and available spaces. The public experienced this familiar space anew, their sense of nostalgia interrupted by subtle, and not-sosubtle art-tech devices and installations.
2019 / M.A.F.A.6: dig:it location: Arad Art Museum, kinema ikon media: multimedia installations, video, AV performance, live concert motto: <img src=”../dig:it.gif”> Have A Nice Click
The 2019 edition unfolded into virtual space. While that was its main exhibition venue, physical registers were staged as well, at the Art Museum. The works on view were interactive in a double way: 1. viewers interacted with the art work, while 2. the artworks interacted amongst themselves.
2020 / M.A.F.A.7: SyZyGy location: Cinema Arta Arad, kinema ikon, Faber Timișoara media: multimedia installations, video streaming motto: WTF when planets align in a parallel universe, an alarm activates (automatically) on the starry skies of any device’s screen. Options: Reset – Cancel – Escape –Emergency SOS (?)
2021 / M.A.F.A.8: in-between location: Art Museum Arad, kinema ikon media: multimedia installations, sound files, video streaming, green screen app. motto: *[] the video and sound files from room 1 are remixed on a central computer with live footage of the installations from room 2 > the outcome is then projected to room 3 and re-transmitted in kinema ikon room where it becomes a part of the kimæra.
2022 / M.A.F.A.9: Wunderkammer location: Museum Arad, kinema ikon media: multimedia installations, prints, video, interactive works motto: It’s the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine) R.E.M. The festival takes over the History galleries from within the Arad Museum, reinventing this space as a location for artistic experimentation during the following two years. The video and media installations included in this edition are a rejoinder to a complex project initiated by kinema ikon during MAFA 8.
