THESE MUSEUMS BRING LOCAL HISTORY TO LIFE! Museums
Sussex is blessed with a long and varied history, dating back to the prehistoric era; and holding its own throughout the centuries. The Sussex Museums Group was set up for Museum workers in Sussex to get together, exchange ideas, and get information, but is also there to promote the work of museums throughout the county.
A good museum gives you the chance to see local history in a closer, personal setting, and can really bring the area and period to life in a way that internet research simply cannot offer. What’s more, visiting local museums is not just for school trips. In the current climate, every penny counts, and many have a nominal entrance fee, making for a good value day trip. THE BOOK CLUB
Thinking of joining a book club?
There is to some, a stereotypical image of book clubs as talking arenas for bookworms, or gaggles of girls discussing the latest ‘chick lit’. Which, of course, to an extent they are, but there are many more reasons for joining a local reading group.
A reading group can, for many, offer an excellent route into an established local social network. Offering the opportunity to meet people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, book clubs often also give you the chance to meet people with fairly similar interests, making it an excellent way to get out and meet new people.
Many groups have a focus towards a certain genre or variety of fiction or non fiction, although some are broader than others. Being given a reading list can help you to extend your usual reading, as you will need to keep up with the set texts if you are going to participate in the group, and while many groups decide on titles as a joint decision, the chances are some of the choices will not be your usual favourites. Reading of course will help you to broaden your horizons and vocabulary; the discussion and insights
from other readers give this aspect a whole new dimension.
Reading groups are also an excellent way to help improve your communication skills. Discussion will hopefully naturally improve your listening skills, as you navigate your way through others interpretations of the reading material. Speaking in a group is much less formal and structured than the classroom, but will help you build confidence in talking to new people, and to speak to a wider audience.
Finally, if you have any ambitions to write your own novel, reading groups can be a fantastic resource, giving you a window into others opinion’s, what for them makes a good or bad plot or characterization, and perhaps help you to mature the seed of your idea.

Running clubs
Running has become a more popular sport
Are you thinking of joining a running club? Perhaps the lingering thoughts behind your New Years Resolution, or shedding some pounds pre holiday? Running clubs have become more common in recent years, and can be found
throughout the county should you be inclined. Running clubs are not just for the fitness fanatics in lycra among us, but also offer a diverse and friendly membership. Joining a club is an
excellent motivational tool, allowing you to adopt a slightly different mindset and take the hobby slightly more seriously.
It also means company and security. Many runners enjoy pounding the streets alone, but company can spice up a run, providing the motivation of someone to pace yourself with. If you are in training for a specific event, say a marathon or Race for Life, then you may be able to team up with another runner who is also competing. If you are simply looking for a fitness activity, the motivation of not letting down a running partner should keep you going; but if you are competing, a group can add a little competition to help you push yourself! They also offer a good opportunity for socializing. Some groups do organize social events, group runs and other such friendly activities.
Finding a partner to run with is also ideal for those nervous of running alone. Both male and female runners can feel unsafe, especially when the evenings draw in again, and using a group can offer safety in numbers, and access to well thought out, properly lit routes.
Another important aspect is access to health information. Running can be a very simple activity, but if you are serious, then coaching advice is crucial to ensure you work up to your goals and avoid injury. A club should also be able to give advice on finding a local physiotherapist, sports massage specialist or any other health professional you may need.

We also have a wide range of fresh fruits, such as apples, pears, plums, and heritage varieties like medlars and quinces (season dependent).

So, as the sun wanes and the shade and damp become commonplace. Those murky areas of shade start to come to life with the green algae’s, moss and grime. And as poetic as that might be to some, depending on where it is, can pose a real risk to the householder for slips and trips and potentially far more serious accidents that could have and probably should have been avoided.
Natural stone is the most lethal and decking is its close contender. Where only a small amount of biofilm can create ice-rink like conditions! With so many hospitalisations due to what started as a simple slip up and potentially evolved into something more insidious. Albeit, seemingly, a slightly dramatic sales pitch, it is in fact the truth with the best possible side effect only being traipsing detritus back into the house once this sludge wakes up for winter. (Feel free to enquire about maintenance clean).
It is also prudent to assess and address, if necessary, the growth of moss on the roof ends up in the gutters along with blocked gutters we have leaks and all sorts of unnecessary troubles.
As the rains continue to appear with ever increasing force, so many of the small repairs necessary show themselves once overwhelmed by the torrents. So, whether its us or another firm or if you do it yourself. It’s always worth keeping a close eye on the silent destroyer (water).
