Welcome to the Bath Life Awards 2023. This is precious time set aside for an extraordinary celebration of this marvellous city and those who help make it that way. Tonight, at the Bath Pavilion we will be honouring the remarkable businesses, the creative entrepreneurs, the inventive retailers, the community minded – the founders, the leaders, and the grafters who help shape Bath into being such a great place to live, work, and play.

The Bath Life Awards, now in their 19th year, are also all about catching up, sharing a hug, being together, enjoying great food and drink, and very importantly having a laugh and a good time. And to make this happen, a huge thanks to those who entered, sponsored, judged, and the hundreds of you in attendance this evening.

I also want to use this opportunity on behalf of myself and the Bath Life team to thank you personally for making our jobs such a joy. It is a privilege to be able to share your remarkable stories and your incredible achievements within the pages of our beautiful magazine. We make it our mission to share positive, fascinating, intriguing, aspirational, informative, and inspiring tales of our city every fortnight and without your help and your input that couldn’t happen, so please do come say hello to myself and the whole Bath Life team at some point tonight. Your host for this evening DAVID FLATMAN (‘FLATS’)

Flats has been wittily yomping his way around the corporate circuit for a number of years, establishing himself as an accomplished awards host and after dinner speaker. Since making his debut on TV back in 2005, Flats has gained increasing respect as a studio guest, co-commentator and presenter as well as journalist. In September 2009, The Independent on Sunday signed him up to produce his first broadsheet article, and in August 2011 he became Sport Magazine’s first and only Rugby Union columnist.

Flats retired from professional rugby in June 2012 due to a career-ending injury and has established himself as a firm favourite in the corporate hospitality circuit. He is also an increasingly familiar presence on TV – currently presenting the weekly Gallagher Premiership highlights show on ITV4 as well as a co-commentator for BT Sport.

In 2015, Flats was named in ITV’s Rugby World Cup team to co-commentate on its live matches, while he has also been an integral part of its Six Nations and Women’s Rugby World Cup coverage. In 2019 Flats played an even bigger role in ITV’s Rugby World Cup coverage when he was named England reporter, as well as co-commentator, and pitch side presenter for their games which saw viewing figures reach almost 13 million.

Flats is one half of the hugely successful Flats and Shanks rugby podcast. Such is its success that, in 2018, the duo was announced as presenters of ITV’s first Six Nations podcast which debuted at number 1 in the iTunes Podcast chart the first week of its release.

Averil trained as a chartered accountant with KPMG in London before working for them in Auckland after completing her qualification. She later joined Apex Hotels Group as finance director in 2011 before being appointed as managing director in 2020.

Elly is regional ecosystem manager for NatWest in the Southwest, leading enterprise, and signposting support to entrepreneurs through her extensive network to increase connectivity and accessibility across communities. Louise joined St John’s Foundation in 2005 and works to continuously extend the reach and impact of the charity’s core services. Her role includes being director of St John’s Hospital Trading Company, a subsidiary of the charity that embarked on a new venture at the start of 2022 – the House of St John’s.

Martin founded the business as a small independent in 1998 which became Datasharp Integrated Communications. In June 2022, he took the business through a rebrand as Marlin Communications - a fully independent company delivering market-leading business communications technology systems.

Patrick began his career at Prudential as a financial advisor before progressing into senior leadership roles within the advice industry. He was managing director at Bradford and Bingley ran the UK’s largest IFA network at the time and is now group CEO at Novia.
