ood evening, and a very warm welcome to the 2022 Bristol Life Awards. Thank you so much for coming! May I just say that you look incredible tonight? You caught our eye the minute you walked in the joint… Last year, we held the Bristol Life Awards in September – the first time in two years we’d been able to host the event live. The sense of excitement and anticipation here at Ashton Gate was palpable: for the first time in many months, we were able to meet up again, en masse, glammed up to the nines, to celebrate Bristol’s return to something approaching normality. And in Bristol, of course, normality equates to excellence, right across the board, from the professional services to the arts, retail and hospitality, charity, property, health and beauty and many other sectors. This year we’ve been able to return to our regular springtime slot, but our mission remains the same – to celebrate and applaud some of the standout successes in the city. Mindful of Bristol’s stellar reputation as a green city, we added a sustainability award to the roster last year, and we’ve brought it back again for 2022. So, settle in, kick back, enjoy the food and drink, and get ready to toast the best of the city as the Awards get underway. Laughter, tears and backslapping are all permitted under current restrictions, but keep the noise down while we’re reading out the winners, m’kay? ark Olver is an innovative, witty comedian and television warm-up artist who has worked on TV shows as diverse as Have I Got News For You, You, The Last Leg, Leg, Bake Off Extra Slice and Pointless Pointless.. As well as organising many gigs in the South West and supporting comedians like Graham Norton, Jonathan Ross, Lee Mack, Michael McIntyre, Russell Brand and Russell Howard, he’s also set up the widelyrespected charity project Belly Laughs, which raises money for homeless charities through the combination of comedy and good food.

Each year, there’s a fresh panel of impeccably impartial and independent judges for the Bristol Life Awards. It’s a disparate group, drawn from different sectors and sizes of business. They and they alone will decide the winners…

ANGIE BUAL, founder, Trigger Angie is the founder of independent art organisation, Trigger. She is the creative director of The Hatchling, as well as PoliNations and WithYou, an innovative digital service enabling families to send voice messages and music playlists to loved ones in hospital or care. Angie is a Clore Fellow, winner of the Creative Producer Arts Foundation Award and is on the London Area Council for Arts Council England.

CHRIS THURLING, chairman, Armadillo Having founded a successful boutique web design agency in the mid-1990s, Chris was among the early internet pioneers in the UK. After 17 years, he retrained as an executive coach, moving on to run a small strategic consulting practice as an advisor to creative and digital businesses. In 2017 he was part of a buyout of Armadillo and took over as chairman, combining his role with chairing Bristol Creative Industries.

NIKI FACEY, client executive, Marsh Commercial Niki has been involved in the Bristol Life Awards since 2017 through Marsh Commercial’s sponsorship of the Awards. Niki works with a variety of businesses from an insurance and risk perspective, aligning with their operational objectives and growth plans. She is chair of the West of England Committee of the British Insurance Broker’s Association, lobbying on insurance issues and looking at the needs of young insurance professionals, helping them thrive and become the leaders of tomorrow.

NICK HOUNSFIELD, founder, The Wave Nick founded The Wave in 2010, aiming to bring surfing, nature and ‘blue health’ to people of all backgrounds and abilities. The Wave’s first destination opened in Bristol in 2019, allowing anyone to surf all year round and reap the many benefits it offers. Nick is the chair of Surfing England and was selected as one of only 15 people to be part of UK Sports International Leadership Programme 2019-20.

JEN REID, activist and author Jen is best known for inspiring the statue Surge of Power, which became a defining global symbol for the Black Lives Matter movement in Bristol. She is also a TV presenter, speaker and author; her first children’s book, A Hero Like Me is due for release in 2023. Jen is also a patron of CARGO, a movement that addresses the lack of American history within school curriculums. MICHELE BARBOUR, associate pro vice-chancellor, University of Bristol Michele is associate pro vice-chancellor of Enterprise and Innovation at the University of Bristol. Having founded her own spin-out company in 2016, she is committed to building and strengthening links with companies of all sizes to help the university’s academics realise the impact of their world-class research. She is professor of biomaterials in the university’s Faculty of Health Sciences, where she is a research-group lead and teaches undergraduate dentists.

PHILLIP BATE, team leader, Triodos Bank Phillip leads the lending team for the South West and Midlands at Triodos Bank which exists to help create a society protecting and promoting quality of life and dignity for all. He enjoys working with organisations that contribute to positive social and environmental change. Triodos bank’s sustainable financial products have enabled individuals and organisations to use their money in ways which benefit people and the environment. RANDA ABDULLAH-HUCKER, co-founder, Hullabaloos Lemonade Randa set up Hullabaloos Lemonade in 2014 with her husband Leigh, having previously worked in the financial and catering sectors. The aim was to create a soft drink using only natural ingredients, with no additives or sweeteners. While their company has grown over the years, their production methods and ingredients remain the same. Their ethos is to create a company which makes people smile, from customers to team members.
