VIVE LA DIFFERENCE! We celebrate Cardiff’s cool independent retailers
Little wonders Inspiring, unique, quirky and cool: Cardiff’s independent shops and retail arcades are a vibrant and essential part of the city’s make-up, attracting visitors from far and wide. With the release of Get Lost In Cardiff, a new free map and guide to some of the city’s best indie shops and boutiques, we thought it was time to once again shine a light on some of these one-of-a-kind businesses, to encourage you – for this month and beyond – to shop local; turn to page 34 for the lowdown. We’re also in wedding mode – nothing says ‘wow factor’ more than a killer wedding dress, so we’ve asked local bridal boutiques to hand-pick their favourites (page 21). If you’re a bride-to-be, hopefully you’ll see something to inspire you. All that, plus amazing unseen pics of rock icon David Bowie, wedding gifts, street food, sports luxe fashion, seven – count ’em! – pages of party/society pics, and much more. See you back here in three weeks...

Walk for a ‘world without dementia’ on 11 September
Families urged to join Alzheimer’s Society Cardiff’s Memory Walk The charity is encouraging family members of all ages, from grandchildren to grandparents, to rally round and sign up now for the Memory Walk event, to be held at Roald Dahl Plass on Sunday 11 September. Taking part will not only help reverse the trend of families spending little time together, says the charity, but can boost your mood and sense of well-being – all while walking for a world without dementia. “Memory Walk last year was absolutely fantastic – the location is beautiful and people loved it,” said Melanie Andrews from Alzheimer’s Society Cardiff. “There is a great buzz at Memory Walk, and it is really positive with people signing up to help raise money for services for those with dementia and to fund vital research. “The money walkers raise for Alzheimer’s Society will help us to support those living with dementia and our search for a cure. Every person, every pound, every step will bring us closer.” For more info and to register, see memorywalk.org.uk

A MAN’S WORLD
PLENTY OF CHANGING ROOM BANTER WAS THROWN AROUND – YOU NEVER GET TIRED OF THAT
RHYS WILLIAMS Ou r ma n at Ca rdif f Blues
TRAVEL TALES Golf tournaments abroad, catching up with old rugby mates, Wimbledon, and a family holiday in Ibiza – it’s been a full-on summer of fun, says RHYS WILLIAMS
I
t’s been a busy couple of months for me, as the summer months at Cardiff Blues involve a significant planning period before the new season starts. In addition, everyone tries to get away during the offseason for some much needed sunshine and time away with their families. For me, a few days away began at the annual World Rugby Golf Classic at the La Manga Club in southern Spain. It’s a brilliant trip and one I really look forward to every year. The tournament was played over two days to raise funds for two very worthy causes – Help For Heroes and the Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation. Over 40 former players and legends of the game attended the event, including Gavin Hastings, Willie John McBride and Phil de Glanville, plus Shanks (Tom Rhys witnessed Serena Williams making Wimbledon history by winning her 22nd Grand Slam title
Shanklin) and Nicky Robinson, two good friends and former team-mates. It was really good to catch up with Nicky, who has just announced his retirement from the game following a brilliant 15-year career. Nicky’s a bit of a pro on the golf course these days; he even managed to persuade his father-in-law, Liverpool FC legend Kenny Dalglish, out for a round! As expected, it was more like an oldschool rugby tour rather than a golf tournament. It wasn’t about how good your golf was, but how well you could play after a heavy night on the beers! Many old rugby stories were told, with plenty of changing room banter thrown around; you never get tired of that, no matter how long you’ve been retired. I was also very fortunate to be invited to the Wimbledon ladies singles final by one of our new corporate partners. My wife Liz
and I, and our CEO Richard Holland and his wife, had a superb day, enjoying what many describe as the most quintessentially English event in the sporting calendar. Wimbledon is definitely one of the most special sporting events I have been to, and this year definitely didn’t disappoint, with Serena Williams making history by winning her 22nd Grand Slam title, equalling Steffi Graf’s record. I also managed to get away on a family holiday with my wife and daughter Megan. We joined former Cardiff Blues teammate Casey Laulala and family in Ibiza, who flew to the White Island from Paris after a fantastic season for his club, Racing Metro, who won the final of the Top 14 league against Toulouse. Casey spent three seasons with Cardiff Blues, and for me is one of the most gifted attacking centres to have played at the club – Casey and his family still talk so fondly of Cardiff. Born in Samoa but brought up in Auckland, New Zealand, his career has taken him to Canterbury, Cardiff, Munster and now Paris, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he and his family returned to Cardiff after he retires, to open up a cool, Parisianinspired cafe! Having been to Ibiza a couple of times before, this year was certainly the best yet, as we really got to experience the hidden gems of the island, finding great beaches and new restaurants serving the best of Mediterranean cuisine. We flew direct from Cardiff, too – literally 40 minutes after hitting the tarmac, I was back home. So now it’s back to work, with our first pre-season friendly coming up on 20 August, at home against Bristol RFC. I hope to see you there, supporting Wales’ capital region! Rhys Williams is an ex-Wales and Cardiff Blues rugby star, now commercial director at the club. For more, see cardiffblues.com

DRESS to IMPRESS Your wedding is probably the most lavish party you’ll ever throw, so you’ll obviously need a showstopping dress to match. We’ve got your back… By TA R A BA RT ON
S
o, you’ve trawled Pinterest, and been to every wedding fair within 50 miles in the quest for the perfect wedding dress. Every bride-to-be wants to look amazing on her big day, in a killer dress that makes her feel like the most awesome version of herself, but there are so many options to think about. Do you go for a traditional dress, or something more adventurous? Should you consider a non-bridal number? Or should you just hire one instead? To get you started, here are five killer dresses, as chosen by local experts in such matters…
RACHEL BURGESS BRIDAL BOUTIQUE
What makes your boutique special? “Rachel Burgess Bridal is a hub for beautiful handmade dresses and accessories by Welsh designers, alongside vintage dresses which all tell a story,” says owner Rachel Burgess. “We offer every bride an exclusive two-hour appointment, with free rein to try on as many dresses as she wants. With an eclectic range of non-traditional gowns, we proudly give women an opportunity to do bridal in their own way!” You’ve chosen Helen Rhiannon’s ‘Annabelle’ dress – why is it so cool? “Annabelle is a glamorous number, with a beautiful beaded bodice in ivory pearls and soft cream tones with a sweetheart neckline. The full, soft satin skirt hangs beautifully over the underskirts – the more underskirts, the better! It has a stunning beaded cape, too.” Top tip for brides-to-be looking for their perfect wedding dress? “HAVE FUN! Try on as many dresses as you like – stay true to who you are and find a dress that represents that perfectly. If a dress makes you emotional and you fall in love with it – trust those tears!”
Ready to wear ‘Annabelle’ dress by Helen Rhiannon, £1,725 (there is also a bespoke option available – price on request). Photo by Hannah Miles Photography
What’s new? “Influenced by 1930s fashion and French wedding couture, designer Angharad Mullooly has added another beautiful collection to the boutique, offering stylish bohemian alternatives to the traditional wedding gown.” 2 Victoria Bridge, Penarth; rachelburgessbridalboutique.com

YASMIN ROSE BRIDAL COUTURE
What makes your boutique special? “The collection of gowns we offer is carefully hand-selected with the modern bride in mind,” says owner Yasmin Baig. “We like to offer brides something a little different. As a private boutique, we can offer brides a more personal, enjoyable and memorable experience.” Why is the ‘Annocha’ dress by Anna Georgina so cool? “I love the combination of long lace sleeves and the dramatic thigh-high slit skirt. It’s great for a bride who wants to feel sexy but doesn’t like the idea of a figure-hugging gown.” Top tip for brides-to-be looking for their perfect dress? “Keep an open mind – most dresses look completely different on the hanger. Consider colours other than traditional ivory or white – even a very subtle blush lining can really help to lift and complement skin tones.” What’s new? “We have just taken on two fantastic collections – Anna Georgina and Tarik Ediz White – and recently became a stockist of Ivory & Co headwear, too.” Greenacres, Morfa Lane, Wenvoe, Cardiff; yasminrosebridal.com

TO HAVE AND TO HIRE
What makes your boutique special? “We hire aspirational designer wedding dresses and accessories to brides across the UK and beyond,” says owner Annalisa Jones. “We do this by enlisting the support of private lenders willing to share their outstanding quality dresses, enabling brides-to-be to access the dress of their dreams without any of the associated costs.” Why is your chosen dress – ‘Bluebird’ by Ian Stuart – so cool? “For its pure drama. It’s an absolute showstopper of a dress, a riot of colour and texture, and a modern icon. We love it!” Top tip for brides-to-be looking for their perfect dress? “Be yourself – don’t be influenced by glossy blogs promoting an ideal that isn’t right for you. Think outside the box, don’t be blinkered, consider everything, celebrate your shape and take your time. The right dress is out there waiting for you to discover it.” What’s new? “We’re welcoming bridal boutique Hazaar of London as our newest supplier, and also launching gorgeous new wedding separates from Laure de Sagazan and Israeli designer Julie Vino.” 7-9 The Balcony, Castle Arcade, Cardiff; tohaveandtohire.net

ONE1 BRIDAL
What makes your boutique special? “We opened our luxurious store six months ago,” says co-owner Keira Holmes. “We offer expert advice and a glass of fizz, and pay attention to every small detail to ensure we exceed the expectations of both the bride and her entourage. Our unique collections include Charlotte Balbier, Rosa Clará and Badgley Mischka (of whom we are the only stockist in Wales).” Why is Rosa Clará’s ‘Onelia’ dress so cool? “This unique dress from the Spanish designer’s 2017 collection has already gained plaudits from the fashion pack. With its classically pretty lacebeaded bodice and deep, V-shaped back, it’s an unforgettable bridal gown with an Audrey Hepburn-esque feel – who wouldn’t want to follow in the footsteps of such a fashion icon?” Top tip for brides-to-be looking for their perfect dress? “Know when to say yes! When you do find a dress that you absolutely love, go with it. It is very tempting to keep looking and wondering if there is something out there you might have missed, but you will more than likely end up going back for your original choice.” What’s new? “We’re having a free summer social event (with cocktails!) in the store in August, with masterclasses on bridal hair and make-up by Bobbi Brown, giving our brides expert tips and advice on how to achieve their dream wedding day look.” 16 Minister Street, Cardiff; one1bridal.com

Paloma Blanca satin 4706 dress (price on request)
LAURA MAY BRIDAL
What makes your boutique special? “We offer a relaxed environment and great personal service,” says co-owner Laura Cable. “We try very hard to make our brides’ experiences memorable and fun, and focus on putting them at ease.” You’ve chosen the Paloma Blanca satin dress – why is it so cool? “It’s a gorgeous dress with cap sleeves and a plunging back in beaded guipure lace – for the fashion-forward bride who really wants to make a statement.” Top tip for brides-to-be looking for their perfect dress? “Don’t bring too many people to the appointment! We know it’s an exciting time for brides, but the more people that come with you, the more opinions you will find yourself having to consider. Only invite those friends or family members you feel completely comfortable with, and whose opinion you really trust.” What’s new? “We’ve just been accepted as members of the Retail Bridal Association (RBA). There are over 2,500 bridal shops in the UK, and only 85 are members. This, we hope, will give our brides the peace of mind that they have bought from a reputable store. Brides will receive complimentary insurance for the deposit paid on any gown they buy, guaranteed by the RBA.” 112 Crwys Rd, Cardiff; lauramaybridal.co.uk
TREND ALERT! Need more inspiration? Here’s an overview of the main looks, styles and colours our bridal experts are seeing at the moment… “We’re seeing lots of pastel blues and lilacs, but I think the bare/ blush-coloured linings will still be the colour of choice for next year’s brides. Bridal separates – different skirts and tops – are big at the moment, too. And low V-necklines and 3D floral appliqués are still going strong.” Yasmin Baig, Yasmin Rose Bridal “We’re being approached by brides with wonderful off-theshoulder designs to share in 2016 – so get ready to bare those shoulders! And veils are being upstaged by elegant tulle and lace fingertip capes for a modern twist on the design classic.” Annalisa Jones, To Have And To Hire “In the new collection from Rosa Clará, we are seeing the continued love of lace but with a demurely sexy twist. There are longer trains and an increase in natural or nude-coloured gowns instead of ivory. And British designer Charlotte Balbier’s new collection of floral print gowns have been universally celebrated in the bridal media.” Keira Holmes, One1 Bridal “Dresses with head-turning, dramatic backs, and illusion backs with amazing lace details, are really big right now.” Laura Cable, Laura May Bridal

ardiff wouldn’t be quite the same without its array of colourful, unique and quirky independent shops and boutiques – across the city and out into the wider Vale of Glamorgan, we truly are blessed with a rich diversity of indie outlets and miniemporiums, each of them happily making a living out of doing their own thing. As an indie retailer herself, lighting designer Kirsty Patrick, owner of gift and homeware shop Home By Kirsty in Castle Arcade, is determined to put Cardiff’s indie shopping scene on the map – literally. She’s created Get Lost In Cardiff, a free map and guide to some of the best, local, independent shops and venues – selling everything from records to clothing, and coffee to design-led goods – encouraging locals and visitors alike to seek out the new and exciting places that make our city different to any other. “I love Cardiff’s independent scene and I’m passionate about sharing it,” she says. “The map is a chance to highlight some of the people working hard to create an individual identity for the city. I hope it will inspire people to discover a few homegrown gems.” Although the map focuses on the city centre to start with, Kirsty hopes to include indie businesses from Roath, Canton, Penylan and beyond in future versions. (If you’re interested in being featured, email her at hello@getlostincardiff.com, or see getlostincardiff.com.) For now, though, let’s meet the inspiring folks behind Cardiff’s coolest independent shops…

he easiest way to add athletic glamour into your day-to-day look is by switching your handbag. Epitomising ath-leisure, a bum-bag, satchel or backpack will instantly refresh your look. We love the tan leather backpack by Coach at John Lewis – perfect for upping your sporty fashion creds. Accessories, as always, are key to your overall look, and simplicity is essential – it’s vital not to over-complicate. We love the rose gold slim runway watch from Michael Kors; sleek and stylish, this piece will add a bit of sporty chic and detail to your outfit. The right footwear is essential, too; our current favourites are the silver trainers opposite, also from Michael Kors – streamlined and athletic, while giving you the fashion edge. The great thing about sports luxe is its flexibility. Another easy way to channel the trend is with the garment of the year – the bomber. Choose from a relaxed silk version for a laid-back look, or opt for a structured bomber for night-time class – our favourite is the tropical print bomber, available at Mango; a faultless way to go from sporty luxe to casual evening chic. IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER
Not many of us would bother analysing our relationships with our dads too deeply, but the debut show from actor/writer and Royal Welsh College Of Music & Drama graduate Ben Norris does just that. Both funny and moving, it’s a poetic, multimedia, ramshackle road trip about love and motorways, as Norris battles the country’s most notorious service stations and the perils of lower-league football in search of the real man who became his father, while musing on identity and contemporary masculinity. “Everyone’s dad exists as a kind of statue, frozen in a certain pose,” he says. “Mine’s wearing his cream and black mac, standing in the rain watching football or cross-country… it doesn’t matter which: it was muddy, and he was there.” The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Family is at Sherman Cymru on 30 September. ock’s ultimate chameleon might no longer be with us, but the celebration of all things Bowie shows no signs of slowing down. The latest event to feature the great man is David and I, a onenight-only touring exhibition of images of Bowie on tour, which is coming to Sytner Mini in Cardiff on 10 November. Taken by acclaimed rock photographer Denis O’Regan between 1978 and 1987, many have never been seen by the public before. “This is a crosssection of photographs from the Serious Moonlight and Glass Spider tours, live and off-stage,” says Denis. “It was the first time anyone had really been given that access. There are some unusual photographs; if I had to choose one, it would be one of the shots by the Berlin wall. “For David, that [Berlin] show in 1987 was special; after the soundcheck, just apropos of nothing, he said, “Shall we go back to my old apartment, and just knock on the door?”, so we did. It was great for me to have an insight into how he lived at that point.”

The Dock
Cardiff Bay’s newly refurbished ‘bar and kitchen’ opened this spring: is it the latest must-do all-day-dining destination, or a no-Brainser? By DE R I ROBI NS
T
he other restaurants down at the Bay must be kicking themselves. They’ve had over 15 years of regeneration to come up with a name that’s as definitively nautical as The Dock, and yet it didn’t occur to any of them to employ it until SA Brains decided to make over its old Terra Nova premises
THE
in April this year. It’s an important flagship business for the company, who also launched the Cambrian Tap in the city centre last year; understandably, then, they didn’t just change the name and get the cleaners in. They lavished £1.25 million on a handsome refurb, and they’ve done a pretty good job; spread over two floors with a pair of terraces overlooking the Bay, it’s bright, spacious and lofty, but you can still find cosy corners. There’s no sophistry in that name, either – the building looks suitably ship-like, with a prow-like terrace. Framed photos of the historic Docks line the walls, neatly bridging the old and the new; and there’s a nice little poem entitled Cargoes by John Masefield on the menu, too, if you like that kind of thing. We dithered for ages over whether to alfresco it or play it safe indoors, eventually compromising on a window seat that allowed us to drink in the full sweep of the Bay. It’s probably the best view in the ’Diff, with the comings and goings of the watercraft, and the endlessly diverting sight of tourists gazing in utter confusion at Ianto Jones’s shrine – still going strong after six years, RIP. The Dock may celebrate the past, but thankfully its staff are very much of the 21st-century variety; they’re pleasant, can-do and efficient, though admittedly not overstretched on the fairly quiet midweek lunchtime we visited. Word on the street is that it gets rammed in the evenings. Predictably, there’s a great bar menu, from craft beers to cocktails and 15 brands of gin, while the food offering is ‘inspired by heritage and adventures, that encompass a range of world flavours’. This basically translates into a choice between British classics and a smattering of Asian dishes. The set lunch
VINEGAR MISTER WAS PERFECT FOR CHIPS, THOUGH

SPRAYING IT

is a bit of a steal, with two courses for £8.50, but we were feeling wild and careless and strayed into the barely-moreexpensive à-la-carte territory, putting the chef through his international paces with a chicken liver parfait and a crispy Asian duck salad. It’s hard to get a chicken liver parfait wrong, and they didn’t. The pate was creamily indulgent, perfectly paired with toasted brioche, and while the chutney wasn’t made on the premises it was Brains’ own Reverend James brand, which is pretty gorgeous. Your Man’s duck salad wasn’t quite such a hit, the meat being slightly on the chewy side, but the watercress and rocket was fresh and perky and the lemongrass dressing suitably refreshing. We’d been having a lovely time of it so far, but our hearts sank a bit at the sight of the mains; not the food per se, which looked perfectly nice, but the small wooden boxes it was served in. Please, restaurants, can we now just stop with the novelty tableware? People took centuries to perfect an ergonomic serving vessel; it was flat and round and made from china, and they called it a ‘plate’. Little wooden boxes with high sides are not ergonomic; they are annoying and unwieldy, and if I’d wanted to eat my food with tools that had to be angled downwards like chopsticks then I’d have ordered noodles. Tell you what we did quite like, though – we may be hardcore plates-not-slatists, but we’re well up for innovation when it makes a bit of sense – and that was the little plastic spray bottle filled with vinegar. Genius! The perfect way to evenly mist your chips; though I had to act fast to prevent Your Man from spraying it on his wrists rather than his dinner. Both mains fell into the ‘perfectly OK, if unmemorable’ category; Your Man’s fish and chips came in a vodka batter, though you wouldn’t have guessed it, but the fish tasted good and fresh; my buttermilk chicken was ever-so-slightly overcooked but the sweet potato fries were terrific and the slaw enlivened by the aniseed hit of fennel. The Dock opens at 8am each day to hungry breakfasters, chwarae teg for that; we’re still scarred by the memory of a rainy morning back in 2007 when we couldn’t get so much as a croissant for love nor money down at Cardiff Bay before 9.30am. Brains have come up with a good all-day offering that should appeal to all-comers, from local early birds to families to Valley girls down on the razzle. It’s almost certain to do well; it might do even better if it got rid of those little wooden boxes.

Carte blanche Two inspired Asian fusion dishes from former MasterChef finalist LARKIN CEN, now head chef at Celtic Manor Resort's Cen restaurant
Gua bao (Serves 8 as a starter)
T
hese two dishes are just a taster of the fresh, exciting, contemporary Asian cuisine we serve at Cen. Bao (filled steamed buns) is a thing of beauty when done right; pillow-soft dough packed with sticky meat or tofu, with shredded cucumber and spring onions. Cen does a few variations (Korean chicken, roast duck and tofu), but the pork is a big favourite. Ingredients: For the bao: 300g strong white flour 150ml water 9g yeast (preferably fresh, but dried works fine) 30g sugar 1 tsp baking soda For the pressed pork belly: 1kg pork belly 400g hoisin sauce 20g light soy sauce 40g sugar Method: 1. For the baos, combine the bao ingredients together and knead for five minutes. 2. Let the bread mixture rest for two hours, then punch the dough down and turn out onto a clean work surface. 3. Divide the dough in half, then into five equal pieces. Gently roll the pieces into
logs, then cut each one into smaller pieces (around the size of a ping pong ball); roll each piece into a ball and place onto parchment paper. 4. Flatten one ball lightly with the palm of your hand, then lay a greased chopstick in the middle and fold the bun over. Repeat. Let the baos rest for 15 minutes. 5. When you're ready to make them, put the buns in a bamboo steamer (with parchment paper to stop them sticking) and steam – they will only take ten minutes. These can be eaten fresh, or can be frozen and re-steamed. 6. For the pork belly: put the pork belly (or bellies!) into a deep gastro container, then
pour over the hoisin sauce, light soy sauce and sugar, and rub in. Cover with water until submerged and wrap the container in foil, then put into the oven (preheated to 160ËšC) for around two hours, 40 minutes. 7. Once the pork is out of the oven, remove it from the cooking liquid, press between two layers (with a heavy weight on top) and chill overnight to press down the pork. 8. When you're ready to serve, cut the pork into thick-ish slices and sear in a hot frying pan until golden. 9. To serve, pile shredded cucumber and chopped spring onions into each bao, top with pork, drizzle over some hoisin, and dig in! w www.mediaclash.co.uk I CARDIFF LIFE I 61

3. Mix together the bicarbonate of soda, honey, yuzu juice and dates, then pour over the boiling water. 4. ANDREA BYRNE News a nchor
SUMMER DAYS, DRIFTING AWAY It’s been a summer of weddings, football, paddleboarding and crime for ITV Wales’ ANDREA BYRNE. All grist to the mill…
I
t’s been a sparkling summer so far, despite the not-so-sparkly weather we’ve had to endure. To kick the ‘season’ off in style, I made sure I danced the night away at my sister-in-law’s hen weekend and we all gave the bride-to-be a night to remember. Then, just a few weeks later, the rain was kind enough to temporarily clear for the special couple’s big day, leaving my husband Lee and a host of family and friends to enjoy a spectacular weekend of marriage celebrations – a fabulous excuse to get suited and booted. Or in my case, hatted and heeled! Andrea at Lyon Stadium with cameraman Jerry, covering Euro 2016
Of course, it’s not just been the summer season – it’s been the football season of a generation. Everyone in Wales (and indeed the UK) rallied behind the Welsh team as they reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016. And I was lucky enough to hop over to Lille and Lyon, to broadcast live for the build-up and aftermath of each match for ITV Cymru Wales; as it turned out, it was delirium in Lille and disappointment in Lyon. But the semi-final loss to Portugal mattered not – every player had exceeded expectations and received hero status. And how exciting to say ‘I was there’! Elsewhere, you’ll be pleased to hear I’ve been putting in the mileage on my paddleboard on the Ely and the Taff, to prepare for my Duke of Edinburgh’s Award ‘Diamond Challenge’ at the end of August. A more recent session took us past the Principality Stadium, which was fab! In case you’ve forgotten, for the charity’s 60th birthday, I’ll be on my stand-up paddleboard for a weekend on the River Wye with an overnight camp – all in aid of raising money for more young people from vulnerable backgrounds to have the chance to complete their DofE awards. If you want to sponsor me, go to my page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/SUPChallenge2016. Ending on a rather more sober note, filming for my new crime series Crime Files has really picked up pace – I guarantee

an extraordinary watch. After spending more than ten years reporting on crimes, it’s been fascinating to step beyond the headlines to discover the investigative details of how detectives painstakingly solve Wales’ worst crimes. In the first programme, I explore an historic case of the rape and murder of two young teenagers near Swansea in the 1970s – a case finally solved by DNA developments and the exhumation of a body. Then in subsequent episodes, I delve into how police solved more recent cases, like the West Wales murders of brother and sister Richard and Helen Thomas in 1985, and Oxfordshire couple Peter and Gwenda Dixon in 1989; as part of the filming, I was able to interview the detective who interviewed and helped to convict serial killer John Cooper. The series starts on 30 August at 9pm, and runs for eight weeks. As they say: don’t have nightmares. Follow Andrea on Twitter: @andreabyrnetv, or at andreabyrne.tv

FROM ‘MAN WITH A VAN’ TO FRANCHISEE OF THE YEAR... Recently awarded ‘Franchisee of the Year’ at the Franchise Brands conference in 2015, ALI HOY is a success story for CHIPS AWAY
F
ollowing years of hard work and determination, Ali owns his own centre in central Cardiff. Managing multiple employees and upholding an excellent reputation in the city, read on to find out more about his story...
What were your original plans when you first opened your franchise? My initial plan was to open a car care centre, it was always something that I wanted to do. I wanted to try the ‘man in a van’ thing first to see if I would have the capacity to open a centre. My business grew quickly – after five months, I moved into a small car care centre which was only 1800 square feet. Over time, the centre expanded, enabling me to employ more people and develop the business. I now employ three people, who do the repairs (including me!), whilst my wife and son co-ordinate the marketing and administration. What are the main advantages of becoming part of a franchise? Having a strong brand name behind you is a huge advantage. There are many other people who have car centres, but without a brand name behind them, they struggle. There’s a great infrastructure in place for you to follow – this keeps you on the right track and is extremely beneficial.
What have you found to be the best tools for growth in your business? Marketing and advertising has been the best tool of growth, and my background in sales has really helped with this. Equally, generating wordof-mouth recommendations by doing a good job is extremely important.
Tim Harris (CEO Franchise Brands) Ali Hoy, Susan Hoy, Stephen Hemsley (Chairman of Franchise Brands & Domino’s Pizza)
“BEING PART OF A FRANCHISE, THERE’S A GREAT INFRASTRUCTURE IN PLACE” How much time do you spend on marketing in comparison to doing repairs? At the moment, my son co-ordinates the marketing and social media – he is able to appeal to a certain age group and keep up to date with the latest marketing trends. My wife, Susan, looks after the administration, whilst there are three of us doing the repairs. What advice would you give to other franchisees who want to reach the same level of success? Be honest with yourself and work really hard – sometimes ambitions and abilities don’t align themselves at the beginning, which is quite a hard lesson to learn. It takes time to grow – if you continue to work hard and be patient, then you will be successful.
FRANCHISE BRANDS Franchise Brands was established in 2008 to acquire a number of individual franchise businesses including ChipsAway International, MyHome and Ovenclean. The three franchisees are leading brands in their respective sectors and together have a collective trading history of more than 50 years. The group’s strength is based on its diverse service provision. The dedicated and experienced team has a successful history in franchising, spanning a range of services including proven national marketing expertise, dedicated Franchise Support teams and specialist accredited training schemes, supporting both franchisee and franchisor growth. The strategy of Franchise Brands is to grow organically by continuing to expand their existing brands and also by strategic acquisition of new brands.
What are your plans for the future? In terms of growth, I’d like our centre to open for longer hours. Employing another repair specialist could generate a higher turnover whilst I move more towards the sales and marketing side of the business. www.mediaclash.co.uk I CARDIFF LIFE I 69

“GORDON RAMSAY WAS VERY INFLUENTIAL – HE TAUGHT ME THAT LIFE IS FAR TOO SHORT TO ACCEPT SUBSTANDARD…”
THE BIG STORY
ACTION STATION
Success for Cardiff-based marketing agency Station Rd Marketing, as it looks to more than double its growth in just its second year The business, originally based at Caerphilly start-up hub Welsh ICE but now located in Park Place, Cardiff, is on course to significantly grow both its existing team and its current revenues. Set up in 2014 by Lyanna Tsakiris and Jay Stallard, Station Rd is looking to achieve over 250% growth on the previous year’s revenue figures. As a full service marketing agency, the company has worked with a range of clients, including food giant Danone, background screening specialists Complete Background Screening and the Cabinet Office. Stemming from their initial success, the company works with a team of
senior associates, and they have also been able to recruit marketing executive Rachel Williams, a recent graduate from Cardiff University school of Journalism, Media and Cultural studies. Speaking about the agency’s growth, co-founder Lyanna said: “We are very proud of how far we’ve come since we established the business in 2014. Marketing and PR is our passion and after many years of working for other agencies, the time felt right to step out and set up on our own. We are also really pleased to be creating new employment opportunities for the wealth of creative talent coming out of Cardiff year on
year. It’s been a great start to life in business for us, which gives us great optimism for the future.” “Our focus now is to continue growing the team and develop our bank of expertise in order to support our increasing client base,” said Jay. “Station Rd is currently on track to recruit another member of staff by the end of the third quarter of 2016, which is very exciting for us. We are also looking to grow our client base not only in Wales but across the south and north of England, and hopefully internationally by the end of the year.” For more: stationrd.co.uk

THE BIZ Q&A
Sean Murphy: “I once spent an hour discussing food with Bono”
SEAN MURPHY The director of Knife & Fork Food, which encompasses four gastropubs in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, on working with Gordon Ramsay, the summer buzz and chewing the fat with Bono
FORWARD THINKING TRUE COLOURS
What does your job entail? With four sites across Cardiff and the Vale to keep up with, every day is busy and completely different to the next. My job involves everything from running a bar and managing the kitchens to cashflow forecasting, payroll, health and safety, and even menu design. You name it, I’ll have a go at it.
In business, it’s important to stay true to your values, says team-building guru ANDREA CALLANAN, founder of inspireMe
What makes your gastropubs special? We focus on delicious and inventive food with finely-picked wines and local ales at reasonable prices. Above all, it’s about friendly service in an individual environment. How/why did you get into this industry? I started at 15 as a part-time kitchen porter. Luckily for me, a very passionate chef took me under his wing and taught me as much as he could. From then, I was hooked. What do you enjoy most about your work? Variety. Every day is different and it keeps things exciting. Who has been your main career influence and/or role model? Gordon Ramsay was very influential. He taught me to have a lot of discipline in the kitchen and that life is far too short to accept sub-standard. What’s the best bit of career advice you’ve ever been given? If you want something in life, don’t let anyone else get in the way of you achieving it. Greatest professional achievement to date? I became a sous chef at 25 at Chez Nico, which has three Michelin stars, but I’m now an owner of four successful pubs. It’s hard to pick between the two! How’s business at the moment? Business is great, particularly so in these summer months when we have a full schedule of beer festivals and our customers can enjoy the beer gardens on site – there’s a real buzz at this time of year. We have a very loyal customer base but, equally, every week we’ll welcome people through the door who have never visited a Knife & Fork venue before, which keeps us on our toes. We’re really happy with how the whole business is performing. 88 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk
Any more plans for expansion or new Knife & Fork venues? I would love to take on site number five and we’re always looking across Cardiff and further afield. Our four current sites are operating so well now that we’re in the lucky position of looking into new sites freely. Watch this space! How important is social media to your work? Hugely important. It’s a great way of telling the world what’s happening in our business. It’s how people communicate now and we have to make sure we’re staying up to date with that, especially because social media moves so quickly. It can intrude into personal time a lot, but when you run your own business it’s hard to switch off. Any career ambitions left to fulfil? I would like to grow the company to double the size it is today, with different strands of the Knife & Fork brand and a variety of offerings. I’d love to create a tap house, for instance. What do you do in your spare time? I spend as much time as I can with my family. We recently bought a new house so I’ve been busy renovating that. Finally, surprise us with a little-known fact about yourself… I once spent an hour discussing food with Bono. He was incredibly educated, not only on different types of food but also on how to cook. For more: knifeandforkfood.co.uk
While flexibility is key in business survival, knowing when to diversify is a skill. Switching your offerings, services and products can be wise, but never your morals, ethics or personal values. Being steadfast in who you are personally and in business is undoubtedly one of the main USPs you will ever have. After all, no-one else can do ‘you’ as well as you. Business is built on relationships, which in turn are built on trust. We stick with people who are on a similar wavelength to us, and that level of authenticity is not about doing the next big thing, it’s about staying strong in who we are. That’s why we find it hard to trust politicians and business leaders who frequently change their minds, agendas and behaviours. There’s no issue with being ontrend or trailblazing, but jumping on a bandwagon and riding off the back of the next big thing is unlikely to lead to long-term success. Believe in what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. It’s vital that you know and accept what you stand for. More importantly, stick with it even when you feel like jumping ship. You’re the reason why people buy from you or work for you, so keep the faith in yourself, your experience and your ability, and know that your consistency and integrity will always stand you in good stead. inspireMe are a Cardiff-based engagement company that offers UK-wide creative team building and training. et in rolling rural countryside, just a few miles from Cowbridge, and with a thriving local community, Ystradowen is one of those small, handsome villages – it’s won ‘best-kept village awards’, we’re told – you can’t help but fall in love with. Located in the village itself, Ash Cottage farmhouse is a thing of beauty, too. Dating back to 1710, it’s been significantly upgraded and renovated; most notable are the superb equestrian facilities – including ten full-size stables and an ‘international-sized’ arena – with scope for business or residential development. Inside, there’s plenty of room for a large family to spread out, with four decent reception rooms, including a spacious sitting room, with a large wood-burning fire and French doors that open out onto a sunny rear courtyard. There’s also a huge open-plan kitchen and breakfast room, extensively fitted out with stylish units, granite worktops and high-quality appliances, plus fantastic views over the surrounding countryside. Further on, there’s a characterful drawing room, a sun room, snug and dining room, leading to a second kitchen. A. Second. Kitchen. That’s when you know you’ve truly arrived. Upstairs, you’ll find three of the bedrooms (one with its own en-suite shower and dressing room) and a family bathroom. Further spaces reveal themselves as you wander around – a secondary staircase from the sitting room, for example, leads up to a separate entrance hall, with access to a fourth bedroom, while another short flight of stairs goes up to the impressive master bedroom, also with its own dressing room and a modern en-suite. Outside, there are magnificent south and eastfacing gardens – all 3.5 lovely acres of them – boasting manicured lawns and beautiful mixed beds, an orchard with specimen trees, kitchen garden, and paved flagstone private sitting areas with more of those incredible vistas 94 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

CARDIFF LIVES
Q&A
A
fter working in the public sector in Wales for almost 12 years, Lu Thomas is now a director at equality and diversity training consultants Cognition Associates, but she’s probably better known as the chair of Pride Cymru. She currently lives in Cardiff Bay with her wife and nine-month old twins. So, where’s home in Cardiff, and what makes it special? We’ve just moved from Penarth to Cardiff Bay. Our twins were six months old at the time, and most people thought we’d lost the plot, but the house is beautiful and overlooks the wetlands and barrage. I wake up every morning, look at our view and think how amazingly lucky I am. You’re chair of Pride Cymru and founder of Party In The Parc, amongst other things – in a nutshell, how would you define yourself? Well, I’m very driven and constantly looking at ways to do more and improve. Others might say that I’m a nightmare, constantly asking what’s next, how we can fix stuff etc – I can never concentrate on what I’m supposed to be doing. It drives my wife Charlie and Scott (our event director) mad. What does Pride Cymru set out to do? It’s about breaking down barriers, promoting inclusion and celebrating who we are as a collective community. It’s also a platform to promote Wales and take pride in all that we are. We’re looking forward to seeing electro-pop trio Years & Years at Party In The Parc (12 August, Coopers Field, Bute Park) – what else is happening on the day? We’ll have some amazing support acts (Maribou State, Izzy Bizu, Nimmo and Jack Jones), plus bars, food stalls and a load of rides. The main thing I’m excited about is the show that Years & Years will be putting on – we’ve managed to bag their full arena set, so expect lasers, light shows, glitter cannons, confetti and fireworks. It’s going to be spectacular! If you could get up on your soapbox about a particular issue, what would it be? Brexit, obviously. I just cannot fathom the shortsightedness of us voting to leave. All of our politicians have let us down and it has potentially undone all the hard work and achievements in equality, social acceptance and cohesion of the past 20 or 30 years. It makes me sad and scared for the future, to be perfectly honest with you. Who’s the most famous person you follow on Twitter? Um, probably Lindsay Lohan. But that is a very recent follow – I thought her rants regarding the EU referendum were brilliant. 98 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk
LU THOMAS
The Pride Cymru chair and Party In The Parc founder tells us about breaking down barriers, Brexit and driving her wife mad How do you relax? I love cooking, so at the end of the day I potter around the kitchen. If I’m really stressed and need to think, I’ll go for a drive in the car at 3am. Proudest life moment so far? The day my babies were born.
Karaoke choice? I’ll try anything by Eminem, and I do love a good Whitney meltdown. Must-watch television programme(s)? I want to watch all the Borgen series. Oh, and Orange Is The New Black is back!
Dream dinner party guests? Dusty Springfield, because she was such an amazing talent and it’d be interesting to have her perspective on how it might have been different if she was living today; David Bowie, obviously; Quentin Crisp, just for the stories and caustic wit; and Mags, a very, very dear friend who’s no longer with us – so we could just chat again.
If you had a superpower, what would it be? To be invisible. I would just hang around all the important decision makers and rewrite the crap that they sign-off.
If push came to shove, what would be your final meal of choice? Sunday roast.
Favourite shop(s) in Cardiff? I hate shopping – I would rather gouge out my eyes with plastic spoons.
Who would play you in a film about your life? Rebel Wilson.
Locally, where do you like to eat and drink? I’ve discovered that Ba Orient is still in the Bay! And I love The Pot and The Hellenic Eatery on Crwys Rd – it reminds me of Symi, and I need a holiday! KatiWok is always lush, too – my wife designed all the branding.
Guiltiest pleasure? Apart from Jeremy Clarkson? Picnic eggs and salad cream straight from the fridge – I disgust myself sometimes. Most important lesson life has taught you? Never be defined by others. What’s on your bookshelf at the moment? I do love a political memoir – they’re all such bitches. Which piece of music always sends a shiver down your spine? Henryk Gorecki’s Symphony No 3 (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs).
Best thing about Cardiff? Its people and its size. I love how everyone knows each other or is somehow connected.
Secret or favourite Cardiff spot? Cardiff Bay Wetlands Reserve – because it’s bloody beautiful – or Cafe Minuet in Castle Arcade; it’s a local institution. Finally, surprise us with a little-known fact about yourself… I’ve had three plays written about me!
