THE RING’S THE THING* *and other must-have Christmas gifts, in this year’s lovinglycompiled selection
Let the bells ring The John Lewis ad, mulled spice loo roll (yep, it’s a thing), cheesy pantos and hygge; it can only mean one thing – Christmas is well and truly around the corner. We’re getting into the festive swing of things, of course, going full-on jingle as usual with part one of our big, colourful gift guide (part two follows in the next issue). There’s a bit of something for everyone, so if you’re stuck for pressie ideas, turn to page 17 for Yuletide inspiration. As well as pressies, we go behind the scenes at Welsh National Opera, go big on partywear, eat out at The Longhouse, Cardiff’s latest gastropub, and offer up some seriously gorgeous flooring (it looks much sexier than it sounds – turn to page 54). On top of that, our regular stick-it-to-the-fridge What’s On section highlights the pick of this month’s essential arts and culture. And don’t forget that nominations are now open for our Cardiff Life Awards (cardifflifeawards.co.uk), celebrating the very best of the city’s businesses – see our business pages for more on that. See you again in three weeks...
Clywch y clychau’n canu Hysbyseb John Lewis, papur ty bach ag arogl gwin y gaeaf arno (wir i chi), yr un hen bantomeimiau, a hygge; mae’r cyfan yn arwydd pendant bod y Nadolig ar ddod. Rydym, wrth gwrs, wedi dechrau mynd i hwyl yr wyl ac yn falch o gyflwyno rhan gyntaf ein canllaw cynhwysfawr a lliwgar arferol i anrhegion (bydd yr ail ran yn dilyn yn y rhifyn nesaf). Mae’n cynnwys rhywbeth addas i bawb, felly os ydych yn cael trafferth meddwl am syniadau trowch i dudalen 17 i gael eich ysbrydoli. Yn ogystal â rhoi sylw i anrhegion, rydym yn mynd y tu ôl i’r llenni yn Opera Cenedlaethol Cymru, yn bwrw golwg ar ddillad ar gyfer partïon, yn mwynhau pryd o fwyd yn The Longhouse, sef tafarn fwyd ddiweddaraf Caerdydd, ac yn rhoi sylw i loriau hyfryd (maent yn swnio’n ddiflas ond yn werth eu gweld – trowch i dudalen 54). At hynny mae ein hadran reolaidd am ddigwyddiadau – sy’n ddefnyddiol i’w chadw wrth law bob amser – yn rhestru’r digwyddiadau na ddylech eu colli y mis hwn ym maes y celfyddydau a diwylliant. A pheidiwch ag anghofio bod modd yn awr i chi gynnig enwebiadau ar gyfer Gwobrau Cardiff Life (cardifflifeawards.co.uk) sy’n clodfori busnesau gorau’r ddinas – mae rhagor o fanylion i’w cael ar ein tudalennau busnes. Gan edrych ymlaen at eich gweld eto cyn pen tair wythnos... Velimir Ilic Editor vel.ilic@mediaclash.co.uk Follow us on Twitter: @CardiffLifeMag

EVERYONE’S STILL TALKING ABOUT…
Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland, gorgeously illustrated by artistin-residence Jessica Draws
CHRISTMAS!
Yuletide bonhomie, Christmas markets, even a bit of steampunk – Cardiff’s definitely getting into the festive spirit Yep, with Christmas just around the corner, everyone’s suddenly clicked into festive mode. Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland (running until 3 January) is already open for business, with its usual Alpine Village, fun fair and ice rink – check out the lovely illustration above, from local artist-in-residence Jessica Draws. And Cardiff Christmas Market (until 23 December) is in full swing, too, a great opportunity to bag plenty of original gifts and seasonal food from a host of independent makers and producers. There are more Christmassy goings-on at the Food and Makers’ Market at St Fagans National History Museum (17-19 December),
with lots of makers, foodie treats, familyfriendly craft workshops and demos – a bit of something for everyone. Chapter’s popular festive food fair and market (18 December) is back, too, showcasing the best of Welsh produce, Christmas foodie treats and more. There’s also a ‘green grotto’, hosted by Green City Events, with Christmas craft workshops and a whole heap of other family fun. They’re getting all festive over at The Bone Yard in Canton, too: their steampunk-influenced Christmas weekender (11-12 December) promises designer makers, artisan crafts, food, live music and other good stuff.
St David’s shopping centre is also doing its bit with its Toy Appeal campaign, striving to ensure that every child in South Wales receives a gift. Shoppers are being asked to buy an extra gift for a child in need and drop it off at the centre’s Donation Station by 23 December – see stdavidscardiff.com/ toyappeal for more. And there’s plenty of other family-friendly stuff to enjoy over the holidays, of course – turn to our What’s On section (starting on page 64) for our pick of the best... A MAN’S WORLD
DON’T GET ME STARTED ON THE PANTOMIME OF THE US ELECTION
RHYS WILLIAMS
ANGER MANAGEMENT Rhys gets stuff off his chest...
I
would normally describe myself as a pretty relaxed, happygo-lucky and laid-back person. I’m not somebody that sees the ‘red mist’ descend, like you might expect from a traditional rugby player. The only two things that wind me up are golf and my sister – sorry, Siwan! But as I was purchasing a new t-shirt recently, the shop assistant asked me, “Is this Christmas shopping?”. Don’t get me wrong – I love Christmas, but just not when I’m still desperately trying to cling onto summer and a bit of nice weather. You know when Christmas is approaching because The X Factor and Strictly are in full flow and my control of the TV remote goes into decline on a Saturday night. That got me thinking about other recent occurrences that have gotten under my skin – what you might refer to as ‘pet hates’. So, at the grand old age of 36, I will channel my inner Victor Meldrew (for those of you old enough to know who I’m talking about!), for your reading pleasure.
1
MODERN POLITICS. I like to keep myself informed about politics, and I regularly watch Prime Minister’s Questions. But is it just me, or is this on/off, will we/won’t we talk about Brexit getting a bit ridiculous? Regardless of how you voted, a decision was made and there needs to be some clarity. Instead, it’s rumbled on amidst uncertainty and confusion. And don’t get me started on the pantomime of the US election...
2
SMOKING. I’m now risking the wrath of all the smokers out there, but I absolutely hate it. Maybe it’s ingrained in me from school days, being taken into the staffroom and wading through a fug of smoke, invariably for a telling off. I’m not sure if it was the telling off or the smoke itself, but it has stuck with me!
3
LONG-TERM WEATHER PREDICTIONS. The most pointless and irritating things around. Every year, one of the national newspapers will dust off an article, update a few stats and quotes and proclaim the hottest summer or coldest winter is on the horizon. Only last month, I saw something about 120 days of snow! I’d love a white Christmas, but please stop getting my hopes up every year. Leave the forecast to Derek Brockway – he never fails me.
4
TRAFFIC. The traffic congestion in Cardiff is horrific. Newport Road has been a particular hotspot, with everyone thinking they have the right to cut in on a well-mannered queue. I may have been guilty of this behaviour myself on a couple of occasions, but these horn-beeping, rear mirror gesturers need to take a breather… or maybe I do?
5 Vroom for manoeuvre? Not if you’re stuck in a Cardiff traffic jam, says Rhys
THE DECLINE OF MANNERS. Call me old-fashioned, but simple manners should be adhered to. Unspoken street etiquette like conceding a bit of space when you pass people on a pavement, holding doors, queuing in a quintessentially British manner. Then there’s the mobile phone user, typically head down, frantically texting or reading, who you need to side-step or swerve past to avoid a head-on collision. What happened to simple manners? Feel free to pick me up if you see me doing any of the above. But watch out if I’m on the golf course...

FA S H I O N
’TIS THE SEASON! Worried about what to wear for this year’s Christmas party? Fear not – with our pick of stylish Christmas party attire from St David’s Cardiff, you’re sure to be the belle of the ball
A
classic, nailed-on trend that emerges every Christmas is sparkles; whether a slight embellishment, or a statement dress that shimmers from head to toe, it’s a high-impact option for party season. There are some stunning designs out there this year, so you’re spoilt for choice – one of our favourites is the Laminated Thigh dress by Vivienne Westwood. Or if you’d rather sparkle with your accessories instead, Carvela’s global pointed toe court shoes, available at John Lewis, epitomise the Yuletide spirit. Treat yourself! Dreaming of a white Christmas? Make it happen! There are plenty of beautifully elegant white dresses with considered details out there to get you in the festive mood. Match the beautiful Ghost Hollywood Sylvia dress, also at John Lewis, with towering heels to keep styling understated and effortlessly chic. To be a proper belle of the ball, you can’t go wrong with a floor-length number, always popular at this time of year. This season, it’s all about the maxi dress, and Reiss’ gorgeous Hawk ombre pleated version is sure to turn heads. Pair with open-toe sandals and a compact clutch for maximum impact. Block colours are still doing the rounds, too. They were a huge hit throughout SS16, and the trend has continued into the winter season. Choose a deep block colour for a seriously sultry vibe, and don’t be afraid – the bolder, the better! Style with nude heels and a soft suede clutch for a beautifully glamorous top-to-toe festive look. All items available at St David’s Dewi Sant in Cardiff at the time of writing. To keep up to date with the latest trends, news and offers, see St David’s on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter (@ StDavidsCardiff), or online at stdavidscardiff.com 46 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

BEAUTY QUEEN

Arguably the country’s most trusted beauty writer, Blackwood-born SALI HUGHES’ new book, Pretty Iconic, is a personal look at the beauty products that changed the world. We grab a chat about make-up essentials and Cardiff memories... By E L I SA BE T H M A HON E Y
(Opposite page, clockwise from top right) Sali Hughes and just a selection of the 200 or so game-changing beauty products she talks about in her new book, Pretty Iconic: Shalimar perfume by Guerlain; Carmex lip balm; hydroactive cellular oil range by Sunday Riley; NARS Audacious lipsticks; Charlotte Tilbury eyeshadow quads
I ALWAYS
HAVE CONCEALER – IT JUST MAKES EVERYONE LOOK MORE HUMAN
I
interview Welsh journalist and beauty writer Sali Hughes as she is boarding a flight to Toronto to promote her beautiful new book, Pretty Iconic. The book is part memoir, part a history of landmark, game-changing beauty products, and also has a glance forward at items that might be era-defining in this insanely competitive, lucrative market. It’s a beauty bible; a coffee-table catalogue of gorgeousness. What I really want to ask is which products she packs for a transatlantic flight (more of this later) but we begin – the day after Donald Trump has been voted presidentelect in the US, when you might think we should be discussing more important things – by talking about why beauty matters. It does, clearly: the Guardian columnist has a following that redefines loyal. Every woman I know trusts her beauty product reviews, adores her eyebrows (I didn’t know eyebrow envy was a thing until I saw hers), and understands that you can find yourself in a rapture about a NARS blusher called Orgasm. “I write about politics, I write about current affairs,” Hughes explains, “and I always wanted to be a journalist. A straight journalist. But I also love clothes and make-up. Men are allowed to have hobbies but not be defined by them. Female hobbies define you. If you have any interest in surface, you have no depth. That would never be said of a man.” Since 2011, Hughes has written weekly for Guardian Weekend magazine, and has redefined how beauty is covered in the press. “I don’t have to look after advertisers, or keep anyone happy, as you do on glossy magazines,” Hughes says. “The thing about specialist writing – whether it’s about gardening or writing or beauty – is that it’s still journalism. It’s about knowledge, observation and style. I’m writing for women who care about this stuff, or for women who care but don’t know much about it – it has to be useful for them.” Honesty is the key thing here. Hughes, 41, from Fleur de Lys, near Blackwood in the Welsh valleys, noticed that glossy magazines were losing out to bloggers, and so her columns featured cheap-as-chips products alongside ones with million dollar marketing budgets. The book mirrors this mantra, and includes memories of her Welsh grandmother’s dressing table as much
as it charts best-selling products: “I can smell a perfume, or see a bottle, and I am instantly back in my grandmother’s bedroom, watching her do her make-up.” Hughes always wanted to be a journalist but funded her path to that career by taking on work in London as an assistant make-up artist. Writing was the dream, but beauty products were the backdrop, and always were. “I’m quite nerdy about beauty and fashion, and always was,” she laughs. “When I was about ten, there was a party trick at home, when my mum would hold up a Vogue fashion shoot and I would tell her who’d done the hair, the make-up, the clothes.” Many memories in the book include local towns and day trips to Cardiff with her indomitable grandmother (who would always reach for her Max Factor creme puff as a final touch-up as the bus arrived in the city). “I’d go to Woolworth’s in Blackwood, and Boots, too, so I was wearing lots of Rimmel and No. 17,” Hughes recalls. “But the big thing was the Miss Selfridge make-up counter, in the shop on The Hayes in Cardiff. I absolutely loved it. The first grown-up stuff I bought was from the Clinique counter at Debenhams in Cardiff.” We’ve talked products as we’ve chatted, but I want to know what’s in her carry-on bag for the long flight. “I always have concealer, as it just makes everyone look more human, unless you are a new-born baby,” she says. “And I’ve always, always got blusher – it’s so underrated, but instantly transforms your face.” There’s a long list of products, as you might expect, with some high-end ones rubbing shoulders with cheaper failsafe items, but when I ask Hughes for her Desert Island Disc, one-product-only choice, it’s instant: “I would take a red lipstick because it would cheer me up. Red lipstick always makes me feel jolly.”

ADVENTUROUS PATTERNED TILES ARE A FASHIONABLE CHOICE
TAKE THE FLOOR ‘Flooring’ might not sound particularly alluring, but get it right and it can transform your home. And actually, the options can be pretty damn sexy... By K AT I E K I SSO ON
FLOORING SPECIAL
B
lack and white geometric tiling; distressed vintage parquet; thick, wall-to-wall 100% wool carpet; see what we mean about flooring being sexy? If you’re undecided about what to go for – Stone? Wood? Wool? Vinyl? – here are four of our local experts to talk you through some of the options...
THE BAKED TILE COMPANY
What are the main trends you’re seeing in flooring at the moment? “The trend for geometric and herringbone-style floors is still extremely prevalent,” says Justine Bullock from The Baked Tile Company. “We love brick-effect herringbone because you would typically only see brick-effect tiles used on walls. Our Urban Brick range is suitable for wall and floor, making it perfect for creating herringbonestyle floors.” w

FLOORING SPECIAL Your top flooring recommendations? “We like to think of floors as spaces to adorn, so get creative! Decorative tiles in large living spaces can make a huge impact, much like a statement wallpaper. We recommend our Shoreditch tiles for a truly colourful statement floor in any room.” Best flooring on a budget? “Our Canvas Decor tiles are fun, quirky and affordable at just £30 per metre squared.” And no expense spared? “We can’t get enough of the Townhouse Basket Weave mosaic at £145 per metre squared. It’s a beautiful addition to any home, but use in small doses so as not to break the bank!” bakedtiles.co.uk
BROADLEAF TIMBER
What are the main trends you’re seeing in flooring at the moment? “A definite move to using quality wood flooring in kitchens that are part of open-plan living/
family rooms, rather than stone or tile,” says Broadleaf’s founding director Vanessa Garrett. “It’s much warmer and more inviting for the living area, whilst being just as hard wearing for the kitchen.” Your top recommendations? “Broadleaf wood floors can be used successfully throughout the house. They offer a huge choice of styles and colours, and have durable commercial grade finishes that will stand up to modern living with minimal maintenance. “Parquet floors are a great choice for hallways, which are often small and oddly shaped, and they add character to more modern interiors. Rather than the more formal, traditional parquet, try Broadleaf’s Vintage Collections – the gently distressed blocks create a more versatile, informal floor and don’t need sanding. “For living areas, choose wood floors in mid-tones such as Broadleaf Guildhall Oak – a versatile backdrop to whichever interior style catches your fancy over time.”

FLOORING
Best flooring on a budget? “Always go for the best you can afford – you will have a wood floor for a long time and whatever you spend, the fitting will cost the same. Talk to a specialist supplier and ask about end of line offers as well as narrower boards or a more rustic grade, which can often be a good way to economise without compromising on quality.” And no expense spared? “Chevrons or Versailles Panels – definitely the designer choice in the luxury market at the moment, especially for larger interiors.” broadleaftimber.com
FLOORED GENIUS
Your top flooring recommendations? “MC Poured Resin flooring gives a contemporary look and resilient feel,” says Floored Genius owner Sean McIntyre. “And our Solo version is available in various colours, or a unique effect can be created with our Duo versions, where two colours are loosely mixed to give a subtle fusion. “Solacir Interiors Microscreed (waxed concrete) is a modern mineral material and the smart alternative to polished concrete. It can be applied to new or existing screeds and even over tiles. A wide range of colours is available to give the floor w
WE LIKE TO THINK OF FLOORS AS SPACES TO ADORN – SO GET CREATIVE! www.mediaclash.co.uk I CARDIFF LIFE I 57
FLOORING SPECIAL the look of concrete or natural stone. Both these are ideal for every room in the house.” What’s the best flooring on a budget/ no expense spared? “The Solacir Interiors Microscreed is usually the most cost-effective solution, but if no expense is spared, then have a bit of MC Poured Resin Solo, too! We recently completed a project for a client in Clapham (see pic on previous page) using both products – the blue floor is our MC Poured Solo and the concrete-looking floor is the Solacir Interiors Microscreed; the Micro has also been used to cover the breakfast bar and counter top.” flooredgenius.com

What are the main trends you’re seeing in flooring at the moment? “With endless choices in shade, texture and format, natural stone flooring remains a popular option, offering timeless appeal and unique natural beauty,” says Parez Kareem from Mandarin Stone. “Man-made porcelain flooring tends to be more trend-based, and those that replicate the look of natural materials such as wood, marble and limestone are currently proving extremely popular, as is concrete. Adventurous patterned tiles such as herringbone and chevron are also a fashionable choice.” Your top recommendations? “For kitchens and living rooms, we often suggest continuing the same flooring throughout a ground floor to help with the natural flow and make rooms appear larger – any larger format stone or porcelain would be a great option for achieving this. A first choice for bedrooms would be wood-effect porcelain planks – all the character of a wood floor but with little maintenance. In bathrooms, you can be a bit more fun and individual – combine patterned flooring with simple white gloss wall tiles, or for a seamless finish, clad floor to ceiling in luxurious limestone or marble.” Best flooring on a budget? “Our ‘Classic’ collection of various tiles offers quality, cost-effective options. Our timeless ‘Black Riven’ slate starts at under £15 per square metre, and antique stone-effect porcelains are available from around £30 per square metre. For a real bargain, we have many ‘end of lines’, which can be viewed at our Monmouth head office.” And no expense spared? “Hand-finished to achieve a truly authenticlooking stone floor, our ‘Provence’ limestones are timeless and beautiful. Italian marble is always going to be a more expensive option too, but offers a real ‘wow’ factor. For something out of the ordinary, our ‘Stone Concepts’ range includes unusual designs in stone such as hexagon, octagon and chequerboard floors.” mandarinstone.com www.mediaclash.co.uk I CARDIFF LIFE I 59

s punters, we’re rarely party to what goes on behind the scenes of major stage productions, so these revealing snaps of Welsh National Opera’s Kiss Me, Kate – an homage to Shakespeare’s The Taming Of The Shrew – by photographer Jimmy Swindells are a real treat. The show itself, a co-production with Opera North, features spectacular costumes, showstopping numbers and a story full of wit, humour and farce, and Swindells’ images brilliantly capture the preparation, hard work, fun, tension and other unseen moments that are part and parcel of putting something like this together. “It’s exciting to photograph artistes at this level, watching them getting into character and seeing the hurried activity of cast members and crew in the corridors,” he says. “The performers are not only singing but also dancing and acting, which makes for interesting photographs. “The WNO were very generous in allowing me access to rehearsals and live performances. The rehearsal room is an intense, highly-focused environment – I moved in between the wings, trying to get close to the performers without getting in anyone’s way. Luckily, the WNO use a full-sized stage space to rehearse in, so there were plenty of positions I could shoot from.” Welsh National Opera’s Kiss Me, Kate is at Wales Millennium Centre from 6-10 December – for more info and tickets, see wmc.org.uk

ecember is when awards season kicks off, with nominations for Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Oscars hot on the lips of film fans everywhere. It’s also a time when Chapter digs out some old festive film favourites. Two films tipped for success during this exciting period are Arrival, featuring perennial award nominee Amy Adams, and Clint Eastwood’s latest, Sully, starring Oscar favourite Tom Hanks. Arrival (12A, showing 2-8 December) sees a dozen oval spaceships descend upon Earth, with governments uncertain Ah, The Muppets...
about their intentions. Linguist Dr Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is recruited alongside scientist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) to communicate with the aliens before military forces enact their plan to destroy the domes – and perhaps Earth itself! – in the process. A showy sci-fi spectacle imbued with romance and comedy, this is a cerebral, heartfelt exploration of humanity, with a wonderfully atmospheric and minimalist score by Icelandic composer du jour Jóhann Jóhannsson. In the role of protagonist, Adams – playing a flustered, bewildered civilian with specialist skills, rushed into service by the military – is a shoo-in for a Best Actress nomination. Another award favourite showing at Chapter is Sully (12A, 16-29 December). In 2009, a flight that had just lifted off collided with a flock of geese that took out both engines over one of the biggest cities in the world. The pilot, Captain Chesley Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) staged a perfect water landing (dubbed ‘the miracle on the Hudson’) but after the elation of saved lives, some began to question his ‘hero’ status. Featuring a standout central performance from Hanks, this is a thrilling exploration of what happened that day in New York.
Directed by Clint Eastwood, whose successes as a director include 2015’s American Sniper and 2005’s Oscar-winning Million Dollar Baby, Sully will undoubtedly see this legend of cinema walking away with a gong or two in the New Year. Also on screen in December is the hotly anticipated new film by J.K. Rowling – Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them (12A, 2-30 December). Eddie Redmayne (The Theory Of Everything, The Danish Girl) is on top form as ‘magizoologist’ Newt Scamander, who arrives in New York City in 1926 for a meeting with the Magical Congress of the United States of America. But he is not alone – in his magical suitcase lives a menagerie of dangerous creatures. When the beasts escape, the peaceful relationship between the Wizarding and No-Maj (Muggle) worlds comes under threat. It’s perfect Christmas film fodder alongside Chapter’s other festive staples: The Muppets Christmas Carol (U, 3-4, 17, 21 & 24 December) and It’s A Wonderful Life (U, 21-24 December).

THE CARDIFF CLINIC Bringing together a group of experienced specialists in all areas of non-invasive cosmetic treatments, dermatology and plastic surgery
O
verseen by consultant plastic surgeon Mr Richard Karoo FRCS(Plast) and clinic director Hayley Redway, The Cardiff Clinic is the most exclusive clinic of this type in the city, bridging the gap between cosmetic surgery, non-surgical cosmetics and beauty skin therapies. What gave you the idea of creating The Cardiff Clinic? Over many years of practice, we had seen the number of patients requesting non-surgical treatments increasing, wanting their treatment to be undertaken with a qualified plastic surgeon. Over time, it was felt that to create a luxury boutique setting – as one would expect in London – was long overdue in Cardiff. Cathedral Road in Pontcanna felt like the perfect setting. The setting, in your Victorian town house, is indeed lovely, but what about the treatments on offer? When it comes to our treatments, we aim for a natural, refreshed look, delivered by the

appropriate highly trained members of the team. Our philosophy is simple – to provide patients with honest and safe advice. From the initial consultation, treatment, and through to your aftercare, we aim for the highest standards of care and quality possible, giving you a positive experience. Treatments can range from anti-wrinkle injections, fillers for mid-face, nasal and lip enhancement, chemical peels and semipermanent make-up, all the way to the awardwinning Exilis Elite body contouring machine and advice on cosmetic surgery procedures. So I guess this broad spectrum of knowledge is your USP? Absolutely! The fact that we can direct the patient to a sensible solution to their cosmetic needs with the help of a plastic surgeon means that no-one coming to the clinic is offered a limited treatment range. Armed with sound advice, it is then for the patient to decide how they wish to proceed. Hayley, have you had any treatments yourself, or are there particular ones you would recommend? Personally, the only treatment I’ve had is with the Exilis Elite body contouring/skin tightening device – this worked really well on my thighs and arms. We are the only clinic in Wales with this machine, and patients from Bristol and the South West have travelled to us for this treatment. For body contouring, the hand-piece is placed on the skin, reducing fatty deposits and tightening areas of mild skin laxity, with no downtime. Of course, if large pockets of fat or excessive skin laxity are present, surgery is the only sensible solution.
Why do you think cosmetic treatments have grown in popularity in recent years? We all like to take some pride in our appearance, be it the way we apply makeup, style our hair, work out in the gym or by the clothes we wear, but when undertaken well, cosmetic surgery and non-surgical cosmetic treatments, can also be a truly positive experience to make you feel good about yourself. Whether socially or at work, one’s selfconfidence can dramatically change – posttreatment, many of our patients find a real spring in their step. Seeing positive results and receiving thanks from all those we’ve helped is what makes this field such a pleasurable one to specialise in. So, what’s next for The Cardiff Clinic? We have just launched our beauty rooms. Our beauty therapist Lisa has a range of treatments from massages to facials using Jan Marini products. Lisa offers free skin consultations, and – especially at this time of year – she gives advice on protecting the skin from UV damage. Overall, we will continue to focus on high quality aesthetic treatments for all of our patients and, as always, provide sound, honest advice.

The Longhouse We hunker down at Cardiff’s newest gastropub, run by former Kings Arms and Woods Brasserie man Andy Aston By V E L I M I R I L IC Photo s by OW E N M AT H I A S
A
ndy Aston, chef/owner of Cardiff’s latest gastropub, The Longhouse, seems to have a bit of a thing for traditional longhouse boozers. Formerly chef/patron at the Cardiff Life Award-winning Kings Arms in Pentyrch, a characterful, late 16th century, grade II-listed building – and before that, head chef at much-missed Cardiff restaurant Woods Brasserie – he’s recently taken over the former Traherne Arms in St Nicholas... a lovely 17th century longhouse with exposed stone walls, log-burning fire and original flagstone floor. If it ain’t broke... Just like the Kings, The Longhouse is a cosy watering hole-cum-modern rustic gastropub. There are no airs or graces, just the promise of great food, sink-into Chesterfield sofas and a big old welcome from some of the most affable front-of-house guys we’ve encountered. In short, the sort of snug, friendly pub you want to hunker down in at weekends. There’s an infectiously buzzy atmosphere on the night we’re there – Andy tells us that some of his Kings regulars have followed him here, and people have been piling in since its recent opening. The long-term plan, he explains, is to add in boutique rooms upstairs. But before we get ahead of ourselves, there’s the small matter of the food. On the menu are all manner of goodies, from marinated Welsh pork with tomatoes, cockles and paprika to pot-roast chicken with pancetta, chestnut mushrooms and potatoes in the pan. There are ‘pub favourites’ too, such as classic beer-battered fish and chips, with pea puree, tartare sauce and ‘proper’ (i.e. fat) chips, and venison and smoked bacon sausage with mash, parsnip crisps and a red wine jus – just the sort of ribsticking comfort food you crave when there’s a nip in the air. And there are great local ingredients: 28-day aged Cefn Mawr Farm sirloin, and a proper Welsh cheese board. Before eating proper starts, regular dining companion O-man and I dive into homemade garlic and rosemary

bread, served with good butter and a top-notch olive oil/balsamic combo (so good, you’d happily glug it) for dipping. The bread is so warm, soft and moreish that we end up picking bits off the table, not wanting to waste a single precious crumb. Our starters arrive; both are beautifully turned out and smell fantastic. We don’t stand on ceremony, and dig in. They’re terrific: tender, perfectly seasoned squid, spiked with a hint of chipotle, with crunchy toasted almonds, hummus, smoked paprika oil and deeply savoury confit garlic. “Those flavours are so good,” says O-man, “the hairs on the back of my neck are standing on end.” And a smooth chicken, leek and ham terrine, with a subtle hint of tarragon running through it, wild mushrooms and chicken salt butter, is earthy, gamey and delicious. There are clearly some magical techniques – skill, invention, flavour-building – at work here, nothing short of alchemy on a plate. We feel like running into the kitchen, whipping off Andy’s trademark cap and planting a great big kiss on top of his head. Our mains are just as boss. Roasted partridge, pears, beetroot, toasted walnuts and Jerusalem artichoke crisps provides rich, autumnal indulgence, while a Welsh pork tenderloin, with soft king scallops, crackling, apple, fallapart spiced cheek and kale, just sings from the plate – a food marriage made in heaven. Both dishes are served with potatoes, done three ways: sweet, purple and salad. Simply cooked and well-seasoned, I could’ve happily eaten a plateful of spuds and side veg on their own. We sit in silence, heads down, contentedly tucking in. Even one of the waiting staff comments on how happy we look. “I need a nap after all that,” says O-man, patting his belly. But there are still puds – big, in-yer-face portions, too – to contend with. A Snickers fondant, with dulce de leche parfait, caramel pannacotta and peanut praline – fudgy, naughty, an explosion of textures – is crazy good, as is a showstopping smoked Halen Mon sea salted chocolate and hazelnut torte. Both are hastily inhaled, and spoons duly licked clean. O-man waves his napkin in surrender, and buries his face in it. This is so much more than simple pub fare. Much like the Kings, it’s feasting food prepared with heartfelt soul, imagination and flair – a flawless showcase of top-notch cooking from one of Cardiff’s go-to chefs. More power to his elbow.

never really need an excuse to visit the Big Smoke, ours happened to be a ‘milestone’ birthday. With a pulling out of all the stops completely compulsory, the five-star, 17th-century-built Milestone Hotel in Kensington Court was an apt choice. Yes, because of its appropriate moniker, but its raft of awards and accolades had something to do with it, too. As did its positioning, slap-bang in the middle of elegant Kensington – opposite the palace, lake and gardens, grandly flanked by a myriad of foreign embassies. Relieved of our bags by a top-hatted doorman (proper London-like) who welcomes us as if he genuinely means it, we step inside the elegant hotel – once a school, a monks’ chapel and a lunatic asylum (though not at the same time, we hope). “Is it haunted?” birthday girl asks, semi-hopefully. “No,” comes the droll reply, but apparently the hotel has an excellent concierge who can arrange a ghost for us… Up in the dramatic Harlequin Suite – inspired by 15th-century pantomime and fitted out with French diamondquartered furniture in black and white, and a theatrical chandelier of black glass – we sink into goose down pillows piled up against a huge gold statement headboard, refuelling with welcome champagne, fresh fruit and cupcakes printed with bespoke messages that provoke gasps of surprise. The Milestone seems to specialise in TNTs – Tiny Noticeable Touches, we’re told, as we peruse the ‘pillow menu’ (aromatherapy, anti-snore, hangover) – and surprisingly, there are none of the stuffy airs and graces you might expect from a five-star establishment. In the conservatory, we find large sepia prints of Hepburn and Monroe hanging on the walls, beside the bottle-green equestrian-themed Stables Bar, before heading for the wood-panelled, book-lined Park Lounge for afternoon tea. It’s a warm scones with Devonshire clotted cream and lavender eclairs sort of affair, overseen by Noel Coward peering down at us from a portrait on the wall. Afterwards, we opt for a digestion-aiding stroll around Kensington Gardens, where we spot everything from scampering
squirrels, showboating rollerskaters and shih-tzus barrel-rolling in the freshly cut grass, to alfresco salsa classes and students tightroping between trees. Later that afternoon, we try out the hotel’s resistance pool and sauna, before it’s time to sample the work of executive chef Alexandros Diamantis at Cheneston’s fine dining restaurant (the name comes from an early spelling of Kensington). Surrounded by mahogany, leaded Victorian windows and an oak fireplace, a live pianist tickles the ivories as we tuck into pea and mint velouté; a prawn and crayfish cocktail featuring the freshest, fattest chunks of fish; and hotel owner Bea Tollman’s Bea’s Eggs Royale – three eggs, scrambled, spooned back into their own shells and each topped with smoked salmon, caviar or potted shrimp. Choosing from over 300 wines proves tricky, so we go with the recommendation of a refreshing sauvignon from Bea’s family vineyard to accompany perfectly cooked pan-fried wild sea trout with braised pearl barley, minted peas, pickled beetroot and orange segments. The next morning, bright and surprisingly early, we have a mooch around the inspiring Saatchi Gallery, and go for a tour of Kensington Palace – where the Fashion Rules Restyled exhibition (on until 3 January 2017) has us admiring dresses worn by HRH The Queen, Princess Diana and Princess Margaret, as well as cool vintage Vogue covers and gorgeous fashion illustrations by the likes of Norman Hartnell and Ian Thomas. There’s also plenty to entertain as part of Victoria Revealed – which offers lots of interesting interactive elements and the chance to see the ancient royal apartments – although if you want more lively than laid-back, the bright lights of the West End are easily accessible, and the Royal Albert Hall (and impressive Albert Memorial) are only minutes away if catching a show is high on your agenda. For top-notch tucker, über-classy surrounds and complete comfort and convenience – with a team who genuinely do go the extra mile – The Milestone Hotel really is a no-brainer.

Other hybrid system components have been made lighter and smaller, and have been repositioned for optimum packaging, further contributing to the car’s low centre of gravity. This contrasts with the pronounced flaring of the wheel arches, which give the new crossover a wide and extremely powerful stance. THE BIG STORY
SEE YOU SWN Musicians in Wales can now get industry-ready thanks to Barod, a new intensive core programme from Swn offering training, advice and a practical support platform Barod, meaning ‘ready’ in Welsh, is an intensive programme and series of standalone workshops dedicated to artists needing extra support to make it big in the business. In February, March and April 2017, industry experts from across the UK will come to Cardiff to impart their knowledge on all the latest music business trends, from marketing and developing a fanbase to making and managing money. With sessions for artists on the tip of success, and for those just starting out, Barod will look at how the music business works, as well as offering standalone artist development workshops. The programme culminates with a Welsh Music Industry Gathering (7 April 2017), a day for musicians at all stages, plus anyone involved across the wider music industry in Wales.
ˆ we work with hundreds of bands every year,” “At Swn, ˆ Festival and the said John Rostron, co-founder of Swn Welsh Music Prize. “Many ask us for help or advice, and we found there were particular issues that kept coming back again and again. It was this that inspired us to create Barod. “We want to focus on practical training and workshops to give bands the tools they need to help their career, and to make their lives in a band much easier, so they can get on with making music and playing shows. “It’s a really exciting step for us to branch out from being promoters and festival-makers into offering this new way to support music in Wales.” For more: swnissound.com/barod

CARDIFF LIFE AWARDS WINNER’S PROFILE
CHAPTER Laurentiu Florea from multi-artform venue Chapter, winner of the Arts and Platinum categories at last year’s Cardiff Life Awards, recalls an “amazing” night
FORWARD THINKING TREAT YOUR TEAM Reward your hard-working employees with a spot of Christmas gifting, says team-building guru ANDREA CALLANAN, founder of inspireMe Chapter’s Mair Jones and Laurentiu Florea at the 2016 Cardiff Life Awards
How did it feel to win two Cardiff Life Awards? It was an amazing feeling to win both the Arts and the Platinum Award. I felt it was a recognition of the hard work of all past and present Chapter staff and visitors, and it has been a huge morale-booster for the team.
What have you found to be the best tools for growth in your business? You have to be very good at what you do; in Cardiff we are very fortunate to have some other organisations doing what we do extremely well – which challenges us to continue being great.
What was it about your year/nomination that clinched it, do you think? Although there were some huge arts organisations also nominated, Chapter truly brings a vital contribution to the contemporary arts scene in Wales and beyond. Our reach goes very far through our arts and education programme and it was truly special to see this recognised by the judges.
What’s new and exciting at Chapter? We’re in the middle of Artes Mundi 7, showing some amazing work from Bedwyr Williams, Lamia Joreige and Nástio Mosquito. We’re also very excited to launch Peilot, Chapter’s brand new Associated Artist Programme, which offers dedicated support for selected artists and companies, maximising opportunities for touring and UK/international collaboration. Watch out for our Winterfest food and drink festival in early December too, with Christmas beers, mulled wine, roast chestnuts, a hog roast and lots of crafty family fun.
What did you enjoy most about Awards night? Receiving the awards, of course! But also the warmth of everyone in the room when we were announced as winners. As far as the Platinum Award was concerned, any category winner was as worthy of it as the other – I was very happy to accept it on behalf of Chapter. Where is your Award now? Proudly displayed in the box office foyer! As a centre for contemporary arts, what makes Chapter special? Chapter is a very inclusive environment, a great space to eat and drink, to talk and read, and to see or make art. It isn’t only one of the most vibrant creative spaces in Wales, but also a very important social and community hub. There are cinemas, theatre, a gallery, performances, rehearsal and workshop spaces, and a large café serving some pretty amazing food and drink. 98 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk
Which other Cardiff businesses do you admire? We love working with G39, an artist-led contemporary arts space, and have really enjoyed being part of Cardiff Contemporary, with Heather and Ivan Morison’s Love Me Or Leave Me Alone installation in Porth Teigr. But we’re involved in many other projects – and we love them all! Tell us a little-known fact about Chapter… Part of the money needed to open Chapter in the early ’70s was raised at a concert in Sophia Gardens in 1970, featuring Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath, amongst others. With Christmas just around the corner, is it appropriate to give gifts to your team? And if so, how? At inspireMe, we give gifts – always have done, always will. The beauty of a small team is that we can do this in a way where it’s not too overbearing. As a creative team, it’s most definitely the thought that counts, not the pennies you spend. Gift-giving is a form of communication – the gift could simply be a handwritten card. It doesn’t have to be anything too personal or expensive, as long as appreciation is communicated somehow. I give ‘extra’ paid holidays between Christmas and New Year, while Admiral provide a team outing and time within work to do this. Your team have slogged away for you all year, so say ‘thank you’ to them. Studies have shown that gratitude in the workplace encourages greater relationships and a more positive working environment, which increases productivity. Get creative – I’ll be making edible gifts this year (inspireMe team gift spoiler!). So, don’t forget to reward your hard-working staff – imagine the enormous sense of wellbeing you’ll feel when they open your card or small gift and feel appreciated! inspireMe are a Cardiff-based engagement company that offers UK-wide creative team building and training. GOING LEGAL Cardiff-based Hugh James has been announced as the winner for The Legal 500 UK Firm of the Year for Wales – widely acknowledged as the world’s largest legal referral guide – beating off competition from four other Welsh law firms. “This award is a great way to mark a milestone year for us, which has involved two law firms joining forces with Hugh James, major pieces of work for our clients, new client wins, strategic appointments and a recent rebrand,” said Alun Jones, managing partner at Hugh James. “We were up against some tough competition, so to win is a huge achievement for us.” For more: hughjames.com

nnedd Dan Yr Eglwys, translated as ‘homestead below the church’, offers a rare opportunity to purchase a beautiful six-bedroom character property, offering modern comforts with an abundance of original features. It has so much going for it: four decent reception rooms, five bathrooms (three of which are en-suite), an openplan kitchen/breakfast room with five-oven Aga, various terraces, hot tub, and more. And this versatile abode is not only a large family home but also has the potential for being a letting annexe (or space for a dependant relative), as well as an ideal ‘lock up and leave’ second home. It occupies a truly unique position, on a hillside above the Usk valley, with panoramic views of the mountains between the historic market town of Crickhowell – just three miles away – and lovely Abergavenny, a mere five miles down the road. The village of Gilwern, with a doctors’ surgery, post office, grocers, hairdressers and all the local amenities you’d want, is a little over a mile away. The Brecon to Newport canal is a short walk from the house, too, offering even more peaceful pursuits amongst the amazing landscape of the Brecon Beacons National Park. And the dual carriageway, three miles away on the edge of Gilwern, links up with all major road networks to Cardiff, Swansea and beyond. Sold? We are... 108 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

Q&A
D
escribing themselves as ‘creators of lifestyle spaces’, Project One is an award-winning (16 awards in two years!) interior architecture/design and build service. Co-founder and director Dorian Bowen, one of the loveliest and liveliest chaps around, just buzzes with drive and energy, as you’re about to find out... So... where’s home in Cardiff, and what makes it special? Penarth – it’s getting kinda magical! Chez Francis, Fauvette Deli, a bakery, a Michelin star – and that’s just this month! In a nutshell, what does Project One do? We change lives through amazing design and the creation of space, where people grow and families blossom. Why do you describe yourselves as ‘interior architects’ rather than ‘interior designers’? Interior architecture is the new interior design! It’s all about breaking down barriers over things like putting up wallpaper. Interiors-wise, what’s rocking your world right now? Mixed metals. Geometric carpets. Partitions. What sort of projects are you working on at the moment? Project One London launched in September, so we’re taking over Mayfair, but the biggest buzz is SkyFall, our new ‘talking tech’ show space, due to open in spring 2017. It’s a hybrid space with new technology and the best of what we do, seamlessly incorporated into a new way of living.
DORIAN BOWEN The co-founder of award-winning ‘interior architects’ Project One on changing lives, Heinz ravioli and saving a busload of nuns Dream dinner party guests? Jesus, Pontius Pilate and Judas. We need to sort this out once and for all, we need closure...
Karaoke choice? It would have to be It’s Raining Men at a same sex wedding. It’s a stormer!
If push came to shove, what would be your final meal of choice? New York street pizza and fries with Jessica Alba, after my presidential inauguration.
Must-watch television programme? American Horror Story.
If your nearest and dearest had to describe you, what would they say? Hopefully, as little as possible. It’s a small world!
If you could get up on your soapbox about a particular issue, what would it be? The state of politics!
Who would portray you in a movie about your life? Tom Hanks circa Big – on the off-chance that they rewrite my life to have a trampoline in a New York loft.
Who’s the most famous person you follow on Twitter? Sian The Weather.
What’s your guiltiest pleasure? Heinz ravioli topped with melted cheese slices. Don’t ask!
How do you relax? Relax?? What’s that?
What’s the most important lesson life has taught you? ‘Backed’ doesn’t always mean ‘backed up’.
Proudest life moment so far? It’s all about Project One as a lifestyle, so I’d say getting nominated three years in a row at the Global Design Awards last month. It could well be a first!
What’s on your bookshelf at the moment? The 13½ Lives Of Captain Bluebear by Walter Moers. He’s a bit of a genius – the imagination! Try it... Which piece of music always sends a shiver down your spine? Wagner’s Flight Of The Valkyries during the beach scene in Apocalypse Now.

If you had a superpower, what would it be? To eat, drink and have fun without consequence. Best thing about Cardiff? Our evolving food scene – it’s so exciting. Michelin star for James Sommerin in Penarth. Independents in PontCanton. Kas at Waterloo Tea, rocking the status quo with a new evening social concept. Love it! Favourite shop in Cardiff? Fauvette Deli – I think those guys will do something great. Locally, where do you like to eat and drink? Restaurant James Sommerin, Bar 44 and Waterloo tea – the best Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the Penarth map. Secret or favourite Cardiff spot? Alexandra Park on a summer’s day with Channel views – Penarth really is the garden by the sea. Finally, surprise us with a little-known fact about yourself… I once saved a bus full of nuns. By ‘saved’, I mean managed to crash into a tree... For more: projectone.design
