Brew horizons Judging by Cardiff’s booming café culture, we can’t be the only ones with a killer coffee habit to feed. With more and more of us wanting (and recognising) a decent brew, and new independent coffee shops seemingly opening up by the month, the city’s café scene has never looked perkier. Turn to page 66 for the lowdown on our current favourite haunts (and those of Cardiff’s Twitterati) – and please do tweet us at @CardiffLifeMag if we’ve missed out your favourite. As you’ll have noticed from our cover, we’re also on an interiors tip. For SS17, it’s all about being bold, fearless and embracing the glam – flick over to page 30 to see which local interiors heroes are rocking our world. And we’re in Cardiff Life Awards mode, celebrating the best of local business. Following the big event at City Hall, this year’s winners – congrats, everyone! – are pictured in all their glory from page 16 (see next issue for the Awards after-party and celebration pics – out 13 April). Such a good night. Still not entirely sure our heads have fully recovered...

Doctor Who: thinking outside the box

NEWS IN BRIEF

LOOK WHO’S BACK!

Yep, reason to get excited, Whovians – Doctor Who is back, returning to BBC One on Saturday 15 April. If the new teaser trailer is anything to go by (Google it!), series 10 of the iconic show – filmed in Cardiff and starring Peter Capaldi, Pearl Mackie as new companion Bill Potts and Matt Lucas as Nardole – promises to be quite a ride. Astronaut Tim Peake and (right) the Lego replica of his Russian Soyuz space capsule

@bbcdoctorwho

ACTING UP

What do a vivacious vicar, an ambitious warrior and a host of Monty Python characters have in common? They’re all part of this summer’s Cardiff Open Air Theatre Festival, just announced by city-based drama company Everyman Theatre. Organisers promise that this year’s event will be the biggest in the festival’s 35-year history, with Macbeth, The Vicar Of Dibley and Spamalot amongst the seven shows being staged in Sophia Gardens, from 22 June to 29 July.

THE SCIENCE BIT

BRICKING IT Incredible Lego replica of astronaut Tim Peake’s space capsule arrives at Techniquest

cardiffopenairtheatrefestival.co.uk

Following hugely successful performances across the UK, Cardiff’s Sherman Theatre will share Gary Owen’s award-winning play Iphigenia In Splott with audiences in Berlin and New York this spring. “Playing at the Schaubühne in Berlin, and at the 59E59 in New York, puts the Sherman right at the heart of groundbreaking, world-class new work,” says Rachel O’Riordan, Sherman’s artistic director. “We are extremely honoured to have been selected, and to be representing Wales on the world stage.”

Built using 150,000 Lego bricks, the replica of the Russian Soyuz space capsule, created by the UK Space Agency and professional Lego building company Bright Bricks, will be exhibited at Cardiff’s science and discovery centre from this month. The design and engineering feat, which is two-thirds the size of the original craft, took around 650 hours to build. The capsule’s tour to Techniquest comes after Tim Peake himself visited the educational charity last year to speak to hundreds of schoolchildren about his space travel. “The replica capsule is extremely impressive and we are thrilled to have it here,” said Lesley Kirkpatrick, Techniquest CEO. “It is highly detailed in its recreation of the Soyuz capsule, and the level of detail involved is reflected in the manpower it took to create it. I’m sure all our visitors will enjoy seeing this up close and getting a sense of Major Peake’s journey into space.”

A MAN’S WORLD

RHYS WILLIAMS

LEFT TO YOUR OWN DEVICES Rhys on how we’ve all become slaves to the smartphone

W

hat’s the first thing you do every morning? Rather than roll over and say good morning to your loved one, I guarantee that almost every single one of you will pick up your mobile phone. Whether it’s checking messages, browsing Facebook, Twitter or Instagram – or even Tinder for you singletons – we simply can’t function without our mobiles or smartphones. They are now extensions of the human arm. Each morning, your mobile alarm goes off and after a few clumsy hits at the snooze button, you finally wake up, and it begins – the daily slavery to that little device. Personally, I catch up with Twitter using the ‘show me what I missed’ option, and then Instagram, as my first ports of call. In fact, 80% of us use our mobiles before we brush our teeth. Only this morning, I was talking to a colleague about how our other halves both complain we use our mobiles too much,

and I imagine this has been said in almost every household. In the past, our parents would have got up and read the paper over breakfast to get the local and national news and sport. Now we get it all via social media and it is instantaneous, localised and relevant to our preferences.

OUR MOBILES HAVE BECOME EXTENSIONS OF THE HUMAN ARM Whether it’s news, the constant bombardment of what others are doing, or work, there is simply no escape. On the sofa, the toilet, the pub, on the move, you name it – you’re on it. Despite knowing that it’s illegal, we’ve all been guilty of checking that text, tweet or call while driving. Our addiction to social media outweighs our conscience. So it’s good to see the government tightening up the law on using a mobile device while driving – six points and a fine.

Since having a daughter, I am far more conscious of my behaviour while driving, and it hit home again recently while watching a video our friends at Wasps filmed for Aviva. It takes, on average, 4.6 seconds to read or write a text message, and when you’re driving at 55mph that is long enough to travel an entire rugby pitch. That’s a scary thought when it can be quantified into something I know very well. And it’s not just in cars… I recently read that they are introducing dedicated walking lanes for people using phones in Japan. It really makes me wonder whether we will ever see something like that in Cardiff. It wasn’t until I reached 18 that I had my first mobile, a Nokia 6110, which I bought to go to university. My daughter Megan is only two years-old now and I can’t even imagine what the world of phones and social media will be like when she is 14, let alone 18! I wait with bated breath... Rhys Williams is an ex-Wales and Cardiff Blues rugby star, now commercial director at the club. For more, see cardiffblues.com

Jasmine Interiors Need an affordable 'interior designer' with 'wow' factor? You've come to the right place...

L

ocal designer Julia James wants to dispel the notion that interior design is an exclusive, unaffordable luxury. Today, many modern interior designers offer high quality, expensive wall coverings, fabrics and cushions that are often pre-designed to match each other, but these styles can often be very contrived and predictable. Instead, Julia prefers to utilise her vested product knowledge to source finishes and

accessories from a variety of different stores and suppliers to create a more cost-effective and individual interior style. With a very hands-on approach to interior design, Julia can creatively revamp existing furniture, source vintage pieces and adapt existing accessories, lampshades etc to create individual peices that you will not find on the high street. From an artistic painted wall mural to a technical space plan of a kitchen or bathroom, Julia covers all aspects of design. She is passionate about design projects at all levels of budget, whether redeveloping a room, incorporating existing furniture or the complete re-development of a home. Even if it's as simple as giving tips and advice on cosmetic improvement to help sell a home, Julia will work to the tightest of budgets. Jasmine Interiors offers a unique and extremely competitive service to a varied range of clientele. Julia will visit your home for a free, informal, no obligation chat at your convenience. CL

Wow, that was some night! Once again, the Cardiff Life Awards rocked City Hall with a glitzy celebration of Cardiff at its best The anticipation, preparation, excitement, outfits and sheer unadulterated joy... Once again, our prestigious Cardiff Life Awards brought merriment and magic to the city as Cardiff’s great and good gathered for our biggest and best Awards ceremony yet. We knew this year was going to be particularly special – the nominations were of an incredibly high standard, the line-up of judges was arguably our strongest to date, tickets for the event sold out (with over 50 people on the waiting list), and we even had rugby legend Nigel Owens co-hosting on the night. City Hall positively crackled with energy. 16 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

OFF THE WALL

Since launching in early 2014, Anthology has established itself as a must-have brand for ultra-chic, global style, defined by its pioneering finishes and groundbreaking textures. ‘Definition’, its new range of statement wallcoverings (available from Haus Contemporary Furnishings In Rhiwbina – contact them for prices), is typically edgy, combining a ‘street’ style with a slightly ethereal vibe. Our favourite is ‘Diffusion’ (pictured here), an over-sized ombré stripe printed on a subtle, stipple-embossed vinyl to give it substance without distracting from the engraving. Intended to be reverse-hung and random matched, this feathery, ripple-effect design has been enhanced by metallic inks and iridescence. Think artistic style without the need for frames – result!

M

ore than ever, it seems, interiors is all about fun, glamour and escapism, with a broad palette of strong colours, exotic patterns, brash designs and luxe looks to dip into. Forget boring pastels, twee florals or Scandinavian chic – for SS17, it’s all about being bold and fearless, and really going for it. Here are some of the inspiring designers, makers, artists, products and looks on our current mood board, all available to buy or source in Cardiff...

GROOVE IS IN THE ART

There’s statement art, and there’s statement art. A striking artwork is the most exciting way of bringing a room to life, and this arresting ‘tadpole grid’ piece from Cardiff-based artist Hannah Biscombe most definitely fits the bill. With a studio at Magpie Gallery, inside a shipping container at The Bone Yard in Canton (theboneyardcardiff.com), Biscombe’s work is based on digitally-reconstructed ‘photograms’ – an old photographic technique that ‘records’ the space around objects on paper – made from living creatures. “The relentless passage of time made painfully obvious by conventional photography is less apparent in photograms,” she says. “Their lack of specificity gives them an essentially timeless and ephemeral quality.” Yes, indeed – this would look amazing in Cardiff Life’s lounge... With a space at Sustainable Studios in Cardiff, a physical retail outlet in Bath and an online shop, beut is a family-run, curated lifestyle store, offering quality, design-led furniture and homeware from around the globe. These two pieces are about as quirky and cool as it gets: the stunning Boca Do Lobo Diamond emerald green sideboard (pictured below), priced at a cool £20,000, is properly luxurious and cutting edge – influenced by art, crafted by master artisans in Portugal, and inspired by precious jewels. And the retro-glam Delightfull Monocles drinks cabinet (£16,500, see below), made from solid walnut and finished with brass details, is a proper conversation-starter to break the ice at your next drinks party... For Patternistas co-founders (and husband and wife team) Chris and Suzanne Carpenter, bright colours and patterns are where it’s at. Their ready-made patterns can be printed on most interior and exterior surfaces, from fabrics and wallpaper to ceramic tiles and vinyl. “Childhoods spent in exotic countries with rich patterned cultures influence the way we look at the nature around us,” says Chris. “Our ‘Janis’ pattern [top] is based on hydrangea leaf patterns from our Penylan garden, and ‘King’ [bottom] is reminiscent of the vibrant flash of diving kingfishers against darkening rivers and seas. “And ‘Hendrix’ [middle] is inspired by a combination of African print and the eyepopping era of the 60s, when colour, pattern and flower power really exploded into British culture.” For more: patternistas.co.uk

THE FULL DANISH

Cool Danish company Hübsch (hubsch-interior.com) makes simple, functional and stylish pieces – fashioned from materials such as raw, untreated oak, glass and antique brass. Their unusual and beautiful contemporary furniture and accessories are made with great attention to detail and typical Scandinavian flair. These statement pouffes (priced at £125 each) caught our eye, and are available to order from Haus Contemporary Furnishings in Rhiwbina. For more: haus-cardiff.co.uk

THE MONOCHROME HOUSE

This swanky kitchen in Pontcanna got the Project One treatment. DORIAN BOWEN, co-founder of the award-winning, Penarth-based interior architects – creators of ‘lifestyle spaces’ – tells us how he did it “Our lovely clients, Janine and Caroline, gave us the brief of refurbishing their downstairs space, which comprised a small, compact kitchen, a middle dining room and a front room. “Socialising is important to them, so we opened up and extended the kitchen, adding bi-folds to give a better view of the garden. We kept the design clean, functional and simple, with a Victorian-style splashback and exposed bricks to add a bit of interest; the stainless steel island even has a built-in workstation with USB points and charging station. And we moved the large dining table to the front, to open up the middle room and create an easier social flow for entertaining. “Adhering to elegant, neutral colours (off-black and vintage white) allowed key features to stand out – the original Victorian fireplace, for example, and our clients’ eclectic and colourful book collection (for which we added built-in shelves), allowing the middle room to double as a library/reading snug.” For more: projectone.design w

THE EXTRAVAGAUZA EFFECT

Had enough of clutter and gaudy colours? Fed up of florals? Think ‘Attractive Minimalism’, says MIKE GAUZA, co-founder of interior design company Extravagauza “Extravagauza was borne from our absolute passion for interiors. Our mission is to create something uniquely beautiful; minimalism with a pinch of extravagance. I call it ‘Attractive Minimalism’. “The concept has its origins in our fascination with simple minimalistic forms enriched with luxury, and carefully chosen statement elements which are attractive to the human eye. “Essentially, the key is to create an environment that pleases the senses. The absence of anything ‘annoying’ or overwhelming leaves plenty of space for the appreciation of welldesigned, high-quality objects that enrich people’s lives without distraction – objects that make daily life a pleasure. “The simple minimalist design features within the space here have been chosen carefully to help leverage the main visual feature in the boudoir – the beautiful marble wall.” For more: extravagauza3dvisualisation.co.uk w 36 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

GOING THE EXTRA TILE

Want an authentic-looking, distressed floor? Look no further – the Baked Tile Company’s characterful Faded Delft range is just the thing. Priced from £39.50 per metre squared, the tiles appear to have been worn away by years of wear, but don’t be fooled – they’re really hard-wearing, won’t stain and are very easy to maintain. They’re great for walls, too. As they say: tiles for living, tiles for loving. For more: bakedtiles.co.uk

WORD HAS IT

Commissioned to coincide with Experimentica, Chapter’s annual festival of live art, the arts centre’s latest exhibition, These Rotten Words, explores the physicality of ‘textural, gestural and vocal’ forms of communication, via painting, sculpture, photography, sound and moving images. Words become disentangled from the author’s intention, limbs float freely, bodies are scaled up and down, and the familiar becomes estranged and unknown, as artists such as Getinthebackofthevan, Katy Baird, Devlin Shea – her Ankle Grab (oil on linen) is pictured above – Jonny Cotsen, Tim Bromage and others suggest a form of renewal, probing the possibilities and limits of the body and its voice. BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY Rent, Jonathan Larson’s groundbreaking rock musical, is coming to Cardiff – get ready for a heady, exhilarating tale of New York excess

I

By H UG O BA L L Photo s by M AT T C RO C K E T T

nspired by Puccini’s classic opera, La bohème, this new production of Rent celebrates the 20th anniversary (it ran on Broadway for an astonishing 12 years) of Jonathan Larson’s landmark, award-winning rock musical. A whirl of colour, action, emotion, mesmeric choreography and full-on spectacle, it tells the thrilling story of a group of impoverished young artists, struggling to survive and facing life and death head-on in New York City’s East Village, in the thriving days of bohemian excess. “We want to capture the essence of bohemian New York at the height of the AIDS epidemic,” explains director Bruce Guthrie. “It’s a place of

grime and excitement, where voices are fighting to be heard and the inhabitants are fighting to connect with one another, as well as fighting for their lives. “The musical is a celebration of life and living in the moment. It’s blood and bone, sweat and tears, laughter and joy, despair, hate and love, all in this one remarkable year shared by a group of friends. It’s a real privilege to be working on one of the great ‘moment’ musicals, and to celebrate 20 years of Rent.” Rent: The Musical is at Wales Millennium Centre from 3-8 April. For more info, see wmc.org.uk or rentonstage.co.uk

LUCIE JONES Q&A Rent is “a celebration of life and living in the moment,” says director Bruce Guthries

The Cardiff-born actor and singer – soon to represent the UK at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest – plays feisty performance artist Maureen Johnson in Rent Where does Maureen fit into the scheme of things? She’s a heck of a woman! Maureen is someone who knows what she wants and she gets it. She’s strong and powerful – a great role to play. Are there any similarities between you and Maureen? As a person, I’m definitely driven, and, by default, my career has made me stronger. There are characteristics in all the protagonists in Rent that people can relate to – I think that’s why it’s so well-received. Rent is a hugely successful, award-winning rock musical – what do you think sets this new version of it apart? The creative team, especially director Bruce Guthrie, put huge personal effort into making this. The vision Bruce had for it has been driven by a very enthusiastic cast. The message is to love without fear – more relevant than ever today. For more: @luciejones1

Sprechen Sie Deutsch? By Dr Caroline Pascoe, Headmistress of Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls

W

ith national uptake of French and German consistently falling at GCSE and A level, it has never been more important to inspire a love of languages among children. Thanks to our innovative modern foreign languages (MFL) department at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls, we are bucking this alarming trend. We passionately believe that speaking another language is vital. As well as raising social awareness and promoting sensitivity towards other cultures, being able to communicate with people is a door-opener. In times like these, any child who has knowledge of a language sets themselves apart and gives themselves a huge advantage in the workplace. Bringing languages to life through debating, dance, exchange trips and even speed dating, leads to many of our girls securing offers to study French, German and Spanish at the country’s top universities.

One of our rising language stars, Rosie in Year 11, has just been appointed a UK-German Youth Ambassador after devising a scheme to strengthen links between children in Wales and Germany. Her project involves setting up an emailing system to enable Year 9 pupils at HMSG and a school in Berlin to practise conversing with each other. The 15-year-old will now travel to Berlin on an all-expenses-paid trip to meet fellow ambassadors and discuss how their individual plans will be implemented and sustained. But it isn’t just our own pupils whom we hope to inspire. HMSG is proud to be part of The Smart Choice: German Digital Network, the aim of which is to strengthen teaching and learning of the language nationally. Run by the Goethe Institut, the project enables us to organise exciting outreach activities for local children and share resources with other schools via our website.

BRIGHT on TIME Spring has officially sprung, and yellows are everywhere, from glorious golds to delicious mustards and vivid, sunshiney hues – celebrate by adding a splash of this season’s key colour to your wardrobe

F

or the fashion-brave, all-over mellow yellow can really turn heads. Don’t be afraid to be adventurous – go for a yellow knit top (Oasis do a lovely one), paired with the Weekend Max Mara tweed skirt and L.K. Bennett courts. Perfect for that office-to-bar look. If block colours aren’t your thing, go for pieces that incorporate elements of yellow, such as Vivienne Westwood’s crossover cardigan, or the Autograph top from M&S. With bell-shaped sleeves, a Havana-style print and the colour of the moment, this beauty ticks all the fashion boxes. Pair with jeans – or tailored trousers – and killer heels for the ultimate catwalk look. Can’t face the full yellow? Accessories are the perfect way to incorporate a yellow tone into your everyday look without overhauling your wardrobe. You can’t go wrong with the stylish Ted Baker scarf, available at John Lewis. Chic and sophisticated, it can be worn the traditional way, tied onto a bag or used as a hair accessory – the possibilities are endless! There are striking yellow bags around this season, too, from Kurt Geiger and Karen Millen to Vivienne Westwood and Michael Kors – you’re spoilt for choice! KIN+ILK Nathan Wyburn and KIN+ILK go all out for Welsh mental health charity, Gofal

D

istinctive food artist Nathan Wyburn and artisan café bar KIN+ILK are joining forces to host a five-day art extravaganza at the latter’s popular Pontcanna venue, promising to thrill coffee connoisseurs, foodie fans and art aficionados alike. Welsh Fine Art graduate Nathan, renowned for his unique portraits of celebrities using food and household objects, will create four masterpieces a day from Monday 24 to Friday 28 April, using ingredients from KIN+ILK’s delicious dishes and drinks, while raising money and awareness for leading Welsh mental health charity, Gofal. KIN+ILK has been supporting Gofal (which aims to provide ‘good mental health and wellbeing for all’) since it appointed PS Properties and Interiors – a social enterprise that reinvests its profits into Gofal – to fit out its various Capital Quarter, Pontcanna Café and Capital Quarter 2 café bars last year. Nathan too spends a great deal of time supporting numerous charities, including BulliesOut, for which he is an ambassador. Speaking about linking up with Gofal, he said: “I think it’s important to support and talk about all mental health issues. I think creative people like myself can often feel tortured in our own heads and become our own worst enemies – whether that’s professionally or personally. Raising awareness and getting rid of that stigma behind the words ‘mental health’ is a must.” Both Nathan and KIN+ILK have a unique and creative offering. Nathan continued: “I think KIN+ILK and I are a great partnership because they have a very modern, forwardthinking approach to the business. “I love creativity, obviously, and anything outside of the box – these guys have that down and this is going to be great fun!” Alex Jenkins, director of KIN+ILK, said: “When we set out, we had a really strong vision for KIN+ILK, in that each of our venues would serve great coffee and locally-sourced food in a distinctively designed environment, allowing our customers – our ILK – to meet, eat, drink, connect and collaborate in calm and inspiring spaces. “We’ve definitely achieved this, and people often comment about the unique décor and style of our cafes. “Having Nathan come on board to showcase his artworks in our Cathedral Road branch and create some original pieces is very exciting. “At the moment, we’re keeping who or what will feature in the pieces all under wraps, but

it could be a ‘dukkah Derek Brockway’, a ‘cappuccino Katherine Jenkins’ or a ‘granola Gareth Thomas’! Stay tuned!” Nathan will base himself at KIN+ILK in Pontcanna between 8am and 6pm during the week commencing 24 April. The event will culminate on Friday 28 April, with a raffle and the opportunity to purchase his creations, with proceeds being donated to Gofal.

A bit about GoFal...

Gofal provides a wide range of services to people with mental health problems, supporting their independence, recovery, health and well-being. Their mission is to have a positive and lasting impact in all that they do. Each year, the charity works with over two thousand people, supporting each of them to effectively manage their mental health and make longlasting changes in their lives.

A bit about Nathan…

Nathan, from Ebbw Vale, first rose to fame in 2011 when he reached the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent, after recreating music mogul Simon Cowell in Marmite. Nathan said: “That Simon Cowell ‘Marmite on toast’ will always be my favourite piece of work – it kick-started a whole career for me and I have so much to thank it for. “A few other favourites include Mr Bean with baked beans because it’s hilarious, and my Rupert Murdoch image, which I created using thousands of images of victims of his News Of The World phone hacking scandal – it took up the full front page of The Guardian, which was such an honour.” From Marmite to motor oil, Nathan never shies away from the extraordinary. He said: “At the moment, I’m really loving glitter. When the light hits it, the picture just shines so beautifully. I’ve done several glamorous pop stars such as Britney Spears and Katherine Jenkins, who absolutely loved hers when I presented her with it. “Recently, I made a George Michael with WHAM candy bars as a tribute after his passing which had a great response. I’ve also made Einstein with thousands of Smarties, which was pretty cool. “And of course, I love painting with coffee. I remember a few years ago now, I was wondering what I could paint Lorraine Kelly with and it just clicked! Breakfast presenter... coffee in the morning whilst waking up with her show on TV. It just seemed fitting! “It’s a really beautiful material because of its

sepia tones and you get to keep the original, which is novel after having worked with so many perishable food stuffs over the past few years. I’m really looking forward to conjuring up some KIN+ILK coffee creations… and more!”

ith a killer coffee habit to feed, we’ll take a good cup of joe however it comes – flat white, latte, cappuccino – so you’ll often find us ducking in and out of Cardiff’s buzzy, independent cafés. These days, with coffee on the go being so ubiquitous, more and more of us recognise (and demand) a decent brew. Here, then, in alphabetic order, are our current haunts (missed out your favourite? Tweet us at @CardiffLifeMag and let us know!)...

ACADEMY ESPRESSO BAR

Located at Barry’s beautifully restored Grade II-listed The Pumphouse, Academy serves all-day breakfasts, cake and, of course, great coffee. ARTIGIANO

Decked out in edgy bare wood, exposed brickwork and lots of cool neon, this continentalstyle espresso and wine bar takes its coffee very seriously, promising a beautifully crafted brew, combining a bit of science and a little art to deliver a perfectly balanced cup. They do good breakfasts, lunches, cakes and bakes by day, and fine wines, craft beers and cocktails by night. 16 Working Street, Cardiff; artigiano.uk.com

BLUE PELICAN CAFÉ

Situated upstairs at Hamptons home and gift store in Penarth, the BPC is a real indulgence – breakfast here is not to be rushed. The ‘Full Welsh’ is a great way to fuel up, or go old-school with poached kippers, served with poached eggs and chunky toast, as you sip at one of their topnotch coffees. 10 Ludlow Lane, Penarth; hamptons-design.co.uk

BRØD

“A little taste of Denmark in the heart of Cardiff,” say Brød, and they’re not wrong. Owned by Betina Skovbro, this homely Danish bakery on the Pontcanna/Canton border serves all manner of indulgent pastries and excellent coffee. Order a spandauer (or two), a creamy latte (or a delish cinnamon spiced tea), and tuck in. Heaven. 126 Wyndham Crescent, Cardiff; @thedanishbakery

CAFE BRAVA

A hub for Pontcanna’s arts and media crowd, this cosy café does all that breakfast/brunchy stuff with aplomb. We’ve been known to have the American pancakes with bacon and maple syrup and the corned beef hash in the same sitting – just the job if you need calories after a heavy night. And you’re guaranteed good coffee, however you take it. Another popular hangout with Cardiff’s arty set, there’s an infectious buzz to Chapter’s all-day café, especially at weekends. It even sources its own direct trade house roast, Finca El Izoté, with gorgeously distinctive notes of caramel and molasses, plus locally sourced and Welsh food, including fresh bread from Pettigrew Bakery and award-winning Caws Cenarth cheese. 31 Cathedral Road, Pontcanna; kinandilk.com

This cosy, family-run coffee house and cakery in Cardiff Bay is about as charming and friendly as it gets. Their Fair Trade organic coffee is freshly ground in-house, and their afternoon tea is legendary – a stack of finger sandwiches, Good times at KIN+ILK

LITTLE MAN COFFEE

Another of our go-to meeting spots, with a great selection of coffee from different roasters around the country, including Welsh-roasted beans from the Welsh Coffee Company, James Coffee and Coaltown Coffee Roasters. They also make their own cold brew coffee, which is lovely, and have a real community ethos – they’re keen supporters of local creatives, with various music launches, local author events etc. Ivor House, Bridge Street, Cardiff; littlemancoffee.co.uk

LUFKIN COFFEE

We love this place. All their beans are freshly hand-roasted on-site, where they brew the coffee using the pour-over filter method. It’s a real indulgence – we like the single origin Colombian Agustino Forest beans, with sweet hints of apple, caramel and orange. Too lazy to venture out? They also deliver bags of freshly-roasted coffee by bike, ground to your liking. 183A Kings Road, Pontcanna; lufkincoffee.com

MADAME FROMAGE

Renowned for its enviable selection of artisan and Welsh cheeses, the café also serves Welsh and French-inspired brunch fare, and has a wonderful choice of patisserie and sweet stuff – try a wedge of their signature carrot cake, made with rum and pineapple. Coffee here is always reliably rich, strong and smooth – a proper pick-me-up. 21-25 Castle Arcade, Cardiff; madamefromage.co.uk

PENYLAN PANTRY

Wally’s Deli is a Cardiff institution, of course, but their Kaffeehaus brings the Viennese coffee house tradition to the heart of the city, with continental breakfasts, open sandwiches, delicious cakes and patisseries – the plum cake is heavenly. Their range of coffees includes several authentic Austrian varieties, including the popular double espresso-based Melange, made with hot foamed milk, and the Einspanner, with whipped cream.

Owned and run by Melissa Boothman and Jolene Makein, Penylan Pantry is warm and homely. They work with small roasters who are ‘crazy about coffee’, so as well as yet another decent flat white, you can also pick up lovely pastries, deli treats (incredible cheeses!), and flick through their well-chosen range of contemporary cookbooks. They even deliver organic veg boxes, sourced from Riverside Community Gardens, to your door by bike. 72 Kimberley Road, Penylan; penylanpantry.com

Planting pockets of Eden across South Wales Cardiff is about to bloom into a riot of colour, as the RHS Flower Show returns to the city’s Bute Park between 7-9 April...

F

or the sixth year running, amongst the kaleidoscope of petals, honeyed fragrances and inspiring designs at the RHS Flower Show will be Evergreen Wales. The family firm has a dazzling history at the show, achieving top marks and numerous accolades. So, what does company director Adam Davis most love about this yearly floral spectacular? “I love the fact that I get to meet garden enthusiasts – it’s good to talk with people who are passionate about their gardens. But it’s also a brilliant day out, right in the middle of the city. As jaw-dropping as the Chelsea show is, Cardiff feels personal and intimate. There’s a real buzz for the entire weekend, and it’s increasing in attendance each year.” Evergreen has a habit of coming back from Bute Park with top marks. What have you won at the show? AD: “2017 will be our sixth year at the show. In 2015, we had the maximum four gold stars and Best In Show. We aso had four gold stars in 2013, 2014 and 2016, and in 2006 I won silver for my Show Garden, while studying Garden Design and Amenity Horticulture.” Evergreen Wales is a family-run business. What’s it like working with your dad? “Well, I get access to decades’ worth of my father’s experience – he’s been in the business 32 years. This is only my 17th! I might have lots of innovative ideas, from 3D modelling through to design implementation, but my father’s insight and experience gives the company tremendous depth. You’ve recently become a dad yourself. Has that changed your approach to your work? “We’re always safety-conscious when designing a garden, and becoming a dad has made me hyper-aware of small children when planning. Along with treating safety as paramount, it’s also great to think of little features of a garden that a child might enjoy to play in. At the moment, my son’s very much into rubbing food in his hair, so it’s a little too early to say whether or not he’ll follow in our footsteps!”

Evergreen Wales receiving the ‘Best in Show Trade Stand Award 2015’ (L-R: Richard Davis, Sue Biggs, Director General of the Royal Horticultural Society, and Adam Davis)

Doing the two means we can react to changes that spring up and not have to call in a separate designer or building contractor. “And there’s the 3D modelling. From a concept drawing, customers get to have a 3D walk-through of what we’re proposing so they can visualise everything. “We do just genuinely love what we do. We’re really passionate about garden design, but we don’t turn up in billowing shirts, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen-ing people’s lawns. We love the aesthetic, but we also understand the practicalities and complexities of landscaping on every scale. We’ve landscaped 30 metre-wide lakes, built pontoons and boat houses, as well as installed patios, decking and turf. We mostly wear polo-shirts...”

What are you looking forward to most about this year’s RHS Cardiff? “It’s hard to say! There seem to be new surprises each time. Last year was a celebration of Roald Dahl. I loved his books as a child, and there were amazing sculptures and animatronics. This year, Wales is celebrating ‘Year of Legends’ so I’m looking forward to how that gets interpreted. And of course, I’m looking forward to chatting with people at our trade stand, which this year will be the biggest one we’ve ever had.

What do you offer that’s different? “As a company, we operate as qualified designers and contractors. So we’re able to carry a design ethos right through from initial consultation to the last plant that gets planted. www.mediaclash.co.uk I CARDIFF LIFE I 73

FOOD

The Market Place Cosy surroundings, a friendly welcome and high-end cooking at this popular Cowbridge institution By N E RYS L LOY D -PI E RC E

I

t’s a damp night, but stepping inside The Market Place feels like entering a refuge: the woodburning stove is glowing cheerily, candles flicker on the tables, background music plays softly, and there’s a warm welcome from Maria, who runs front of house. And that’s not all – the building itself is stunning. Dating back to medieval times, it features a huge fireplace, massive stone walls, and a beautiful flagstone floor – in fact, I’d like to move in. A peep at the garden shows a cosy courtyard sheltered by the remnants of Cowbridge’s medieval town walls – I make a mental note to return in the summer. For now though, the wood-burner calls, and we settle down to look at the menu. Pan-fried scallops with sesame seed risotto cake and peanut dressing, and deep-fried crispy poached egg with asparagus and feta cheese both sound tempting, but I go for the breadcrumb parmesan-baked chicken skewer with sweet chilli, pepper, mozzarella and chutney, while my partner opts for the seafood raviolo with parmesan beurre blanc – unadulterated joy on both counts. Both prove indisputably that the chef can cook, which is stating the obvious, but in so many establishments it’s a long way from being the case. Delicate, soft crumb-encased and flavoursome chicken in my case, with the accompanying sweet chilli, pepper, mozzarella and chutney providing a rich yet subtle embellishment – all the flavours taste much

LAMB AND

AUBERGINE IS A HARMONIOUS MARRIAGE... A DISH THAT WOULD NEVER NEED TO SEEK THE HELP OF RELATE

more exciting than the simple menu description would lead you to believe. And perfect pasta, delicate seafood and a delicious, more-ish sauce combined to put a smile on my partner’s face as he gave full marks to his choice. For mains, the pan-seared fillet of sea bass with crushed new potatoes, salsa verde, pancetta and green beans was calling my name, while my man had duo of lamb with mashed potato, roasted garlic, aubergine, tomato butter jus and provencal crust. Again, the food excels. My sea bass skin is perfectly crisp, its snow-white flesh firm, moist and flavoursome. It’s how I always want to cook fillets of fish at home, but never quite manage it. And the lamb is perfectly pink and juicy, the aubergine accompaniment creating a harmonious marriage that would never need to seek the help of Relate. After a bit of a break – for more wine and chat – puds are calling. I go for the white chocolate and strawberry cheesecake with ice cream and a hot beignet (the day’s special), while my partner has the Baileys and praline panna cotta with sorbet and chocolate sponge. Both are fantastic, but the luxurious panna cotta just edges it. Coffee is accompanied by a wrapped milk chocolate mint, which is the only jarring moment; given the thought and consideration devoted to everything else, it seems an oddly prosaic choice. But no matter; I’m quibbling over tiny details. Make no mistake, what The Market Place offers is high-end cooking. It’s good to see such consistent quality throughout a meal, and the restaurant delivers on that front in spades, without unnecessary fuss or affectation. This is a wonderfully indulgent place for a night out, somewhere you feel inclined to linger a little, and where you are made to feel hugely welcome as you do so. We’ll most certainly be back!

Meet the MAKER From gin to decorative glass, these local artisan makers and producers are hugely passionate about what they do

Tom newman Eccentric Gin Tel 07814 166983 www.eccentricgin.com

What makes Eccentric Gin special? Eccentric Gin is a diverse range of different gins that herald back to traditional styles of the 18th century. We blend a number of flavours to create different types of gin, taking their flavour and colour from the botanicals or barrels they are stored in. Can you tell us a bit about your background? I started in engineering and I’m a scientist, but I am surrounded by an artistic family. This has led me to put all three disciplines together... which led to me experimenting with brewing and then trying out different distillation methods with gin.

DAVE STEWARD Lurvills Delight Tel 07779 301935 www.lurvillsdelight.cymru

We ‘lurve’ the name – what exactly is Lurvill’s Delight? A botanical soda popular in Wales between 1896-1910. Created by twin brothers from the Rhondda, profits were used to pay for 150 coal miners’ families to emigrate to the USA. It ceased production in 1910 due to a shortage of dock leaves. Now we’re making it again here in Wales, using spring water and all-natural ingredients including rhubarb, nettle, dock leaves and juniper berry extract. Free from artificial flavours, colours, preservatives and added sugar, Lurvill’s is deliciously dry, low in calories (66/330ml) and gently sparkling.

What does the future hold for Eccentric Gin? We are currently developing a number of small ‘Series Gin’ collaborations with mixologists, food writers or anyone getting into the gin craze right now.

What makes Lurvill’s Delight special? It’s the only ‘grown-up’ soft drink out there – no added sugar and very little natural sugar; it’s also low in calories and not too fizzy. It’s a soft drink that doesn’t coat your teeth with sugar or have an artificial taste. Lurvill’s has got a lovely dry ‘bite’ – the perfect adult soft drink!

Where do you like to drink? I like to drink everywhere in Cardiff – it’s a great city! – but I spend a fair bit of time with the mixologists in Dead Canary or Lab 22, and drink at craft ale bars like Hop Bunker or Tiny Rebel.

Can you tell us a bit about your background? The booze industry. I’ve launched beer and spirit brands such as Maker’s Mark, Sapporo, Wyborowa and The Kraken rum. It just felt the right time to launch a soft drink for myself!

Glass By Design Tel 02920 705317 www.glassbydesign.co.uk

Can you tell us a bit about your background? We both live and work in Penarth, meeting through our love of glass. What got you into what you do? Cathy: I wanted to make a fan light in my Edwardian house and my addiction to glass was complete when I bought my kiln. Angelina: I trained in ceramics but changed to glass, much preferring the colours, textures and its infinite possibilities. What’s been your biggest achievement to date? Opening the doors of Glass By Design in May 2016. How does your product stand out from others? Our business is unique on the High Street. We have a working and teaching glass studio, all the raw materials and a beautiful retail area. If you collaborate with another maler, who would it be? We are currently working on a number of joint projects with some of our featured Welsh makers. It’s exciting to find emerging new talent and give them an opportunity to design commercially viable products.

RAY SANDHU

Chaiholics Tel 02920 495975 www.chaiholics.com

Can you explain what your product is? We are a unique Indian bistro that specialises in chai (spiced tea) and great authentic Indian food. Can you tell us a bit about your background? A trained solicitor who gave up his career to pursue his passion for tea, curries and love for the food industry! What got you into what you do? Pure passion, interest and desire. What’s your biggest achievement to date? South Wales Echo People¹s Choice Award for Best Restaurant in Wales 2016, and Chef of the Year 2015. What is it that makes your product special? It’s completely unique. We are still the only chai/tea bistro in the UK. What do you like to eat? I love all kinds of food – Italian, Middle Eastern and great burgers. Where’s your favourite place in Cardiff? I love Cardiff Bay and the surrounding bars and restaurants.

QUOTE OF THE ISSUE Ride on time: Cyclone24 hopes to raise vital funds for Velindre Cancer Centre

THE BIG STORY

ON YER BIKE Keen cyclists and thrill-seekers from across Wales are being encouraged to sign up for Cyclone24, a team challenge like no other Taking place on Sunday 22 October at Wales’ National Velodrome, and having already raised over £60,000 for local charity, Cyclone24 has announced Velindre Cancer Centre as its official charity partner for the 2017 event. Velindre is now encouraging business people to swap their suits for lycra and take on the challenge, which will see riders battle physical exhaustion and mental fatigue as they relay-ride continuously for 24 hours. Velindre are also offering participants the chance to have a celebrity team captain, as patron Shane Williams, ambassador Sean

Holley and ex-Wales second row Ian Gough have already agreed to lead teams and take on the epic challenge themselves. “Velindre really makes a difference to people when it’s needed the most, supporting not only the patient but the whole family,” said Zoe Westerman, director of Cyclone24. “We hope to see our Cyclone24 participants raise as much as possible for Velindre, as we are very proud to be partnering with them for 2017.” Businesses and cycling clubs alike are being encouraged to take on the endurance relay, with

several local businesses already signed up, including event sponsor Stills Branding. Said Michael Locke from Velindre: “Our star captains can’t wait to be involved, and we really hope their enthusiasm encourages teams to be a part of it! “The money raised will enable Velindre to continue groundbreaking research, and maintain highest levels of care and cutting edge treatments for cancer patients and their families in Wales.” For more info, see cyclone24.co.uk

BREAKING NEWS

TRIPLE WHAMMY

Our pick of the most exciting, intriguing and important local business stories happening right now…

AN EPIC YEAR Cardiff communications agency, Equinox, has announced a record £1.4m turnover in 2016 thanks to a raft of new tourism and health clients, including Epic Retreats, a new pop-up glamping concept, and three major Welsh Government health campaigns. The agency, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, has grown turnover and profit by more than 10% in 12 months. Epic Retreats, Wales’ first pop-up glamping hotel, ties in with the ‘Year of Legends’ tourism theme for 2017. Comprising eight ‘boutique’ cabins (one of which is pictured right), the unique pop-up project – a one-of-akind luxury experience – will appear

at three secret locations in Wales this summer, with less than 200 bookings available (June to September) before it disappears. “Despite the challenging economic climate, we have started 2017 with confidence and have set ambitious growth targets for the next 12 months,” said Equinox director Zara Cottle. “The communications sector is constantly changing and growing so it is more important than ever to invest in ongoing training for our team to ensure we remain a step ahead of the competition.” For more: equinox.wales, epicretreats.wales

Welsh National Opera’s Madam Butterfly

SCALE UP Welsh National Opera and the Welsh government recently celebrated St David’s Day in Dubai, as part of a visit to showcase the best of Welsh culture and business, and to strengthen trade links between the two countries. Dubai Opera hosted WNO during its inaugural season, with performances of La bohème and Madam Butterfly at the new Dubai Opera House. “WNO is a world-class arts organisation and an excellent cultural ambassador for Wales,” said Lesley Griffiths, Cabinet Secretary for Environment

and Rural Affairs. “I am proud that WNO is the first British performing arts organisation to appear at the Dubai Opera House, and is representing Wales and the UK on an international stage.” Said David Pountney, WNO’s artistic director: “We carry the passionate and emotional musicianship of Wales around the world, and it is a special honour to be entrusted with bringing the wonderful qualities of Puccini’s sublime operas to a new audience in the Gulf.” For more: wno.org.uk

GET WONKY! A pair of young Cardiff entrepreneurs have set up Get Wonky, a natural juice business, in order to tackle what they see as the growing problem of waste and inefficiency in food and drink production. Maciek Kacprzyk, 24, and Karina Sudenyte, 21, originally from Poland and Lithuania respectively, both graduates from the University of South Wales, were inspired to start the business to cut down on food waste. Producing a variety of juices exclusively made from hand-picked fruit, regardless of shape or size, the business is receiving support from the Welsh Government’s Big Ideas Wales programme. The enterprising pair also have plans to branch out into retail. “Get Wonky was borne out of a desire to combat the massive problem of food waste in Europe,” said Maciek. “Recycling waste is one of the biggest challenges of our time, and we want to change that. “We recently ran a crowd-funding campaign that raised just under £3,000 to help get our stock going, which led to further interest from investors. Orders have started coming in and we’ve been approached by the university and several other organisations to have a more permanent presence with them.” For more: wonkydrinks.co.uk, bigideaswales.com

BUSINESS INSIDER

MOVERS, SHAKERS, ETC

BIZ WISDOM BASIC INSTINCT Got a small business? Looking to recruit, and want to get the best people? ANDREA CALLANAN, voice expert and founder of inspireMe, has got your back Our businesses are precious. When we need to hire help, we can tie ourselves up in knots trying to get the ‘right people’ to join our team. Do we advertise or go with recommendations and people we know? Should we use a recruitment agency? How do we position the role? How much should we pay? All these questions are valid. Ultimately, it’s a learning curve, and you will get burnt along the way – that’s part of the process when seeing who fits and who doesn’t. Above all, when you strip away the roles, responsibilities, competencies and task lists, what does your gut say about the person sitting before you at interview? The answer is simple – trust your instinct. Bitter experience has taught me that my initial impression is always right. Always. Remember that whoever you bring into your business is another ‘mouth to feed’. This is vastly different to recruiting into a large organisation. There’s no safety net, and they need to be worth their weight in gold and be utterly trustworthy. After all, you’re paying them your money to support you in your success. For inspireMe, candidates need to demonstrate certain behaviours and have an ethos that I resonate with. We have a people profile that took us years to hone – if someone doesn’t tick every box, they don’t get in! But you never really know what someone can or can’t do, regardless of what’s on their CV, until they start doing the job. Business author Tom Peters famously said, “Hire for attitude, train for skill.” This is so true. In the end, it doesn’t really matter how you hire, what matters is who. And that depends on you. You’re the first employee in your business adventure – trust and believe in yourself and you won’t go far wrong. Start everyone on a trial basis and take it from there. inspireMe are a Cardiff-based engagement and self-development company that offer UK-wide teambuilding and training. Strike gold in swansea! On the hunt for their first home together, Hugh Hitchcock and his partner Kelly Barnett immediately had their hearts set on this elegant, modern Swansea abode from WATERSTONE HOMES, nestled in one of the city’s most sought-after postcodes

T

he stunning family property, a brand-new build by luxury Welsh house-builder, Waterstone Homes, in the leafy suburb of Derwen Fawr, is surrounded by beautiful woodlands and is just a short hop from the seafront – perfect for a couple who enjoy countryside and coastal walks. Aptly named the Jane Austen by the developer, the home draws inspiration from the interiors found in her regency novels, combining traditional elegance with a contemporary twist. The four-bedroom property, blending period features with modern comforts, sits in a prime location, just a ten-minute drive from Swansea city centre, with the suburbs of Killay, Sketty and Uplands, and their abundance of restaurants, bars and cafés, located nearby for everyday shopping and dining. The picturesque and cosmopolitan Mumbles, a particular favourite for a spot of lunch, is also within a short drive. For Hugh and Kelly, it offers the perfect lifestyle, and the couple were thrilled to secure their dream home. Completed last month, it is the final addition to the luxury Howell’s Reach housing development – so popular that it didn't even have a show home due to houses selling so quickly. Hugh said: “The house is exactly what we wanted in every respect from its appearance and modern facilities to its location and beautiful surroundings. It’s in the perfect spot with a range of local amenities and good transport links nearby. “At the same time, the development feels really peaceful. It’s only a small site, just 13 houses, and is surrounded by acres of

104 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

landscaped gardens and trees, creating a relaxing and serene countryside atmosphere.” Originally from Carmarthen, Hugh enjoyed an eight-year stint at a London law firm, acting for an array of celebrity clients including Elton John and Sting, before returning to South Wales in 1995, longing for the quality of life the region offered. Now a partner at leading Cardiff and London-based law firm, Acuity Legal, his new house move coincides with exciting expansion plans for the firm, which is opening a new office in Swansea. With their hearts set on a new build, the couple had decided on a Waterstone home after visiting a number of the company’s previous developments and being blown away by their quality and reputation. Hugh said: “We have both always preferred modern homes as they tend to tick an awful lot of boxes without having to compromise – they’re usually bright, quiet and well-insulated. Buying a new build has also enabled us to have real input in its construction and customise it exactly how we want.” Entering through the front porch, guests are welcomed by a light and airy hallway, leading into a large family lounge and study. Centred around a huge wood-burning fire, the living room offers the perfect mix of classic and contemporary.

Towards the rear of the property is the heart of the home – a spacious kitchen-diner with large bi-fold doors, opening directly onto the garden and flooding the room with natural light. “Life at the property revolves around the kitchen," says Hugh. "It’s large, modern and bright, with a quality of finish. It will be the sociable hub of the home, and we’re excited to have friends and family over for food.” On the first floor is a spacious, luxury master bedroom with garden views and an en-suite shower, plus two double bedrooms with Jackand-Jill en-suite shower, and a further double bedroom and family bathroom. Outside, the garden is large and secure, featuring a fenced lawn and patio area, perfect for BBQs and summer parties. The home also benefits from a double driveway and double garage, offering ample parking. “It’s such a wonderful new home and we can’t wait to make many happy memories here," says Kelly. "It offers us plenty of space, which is ideal as we have four children between us, and every single room is bright and airy with a modern feel.” CL For more information please visit: www.waterstonehomes.com

Q&A

I

nspired by the enduring aesthetic of Scandinavian design, Sian is the founder of her own design brand, Sian Elin. Selling pattern-led, colourful homewares and stationery all over the world, her products and fabrics range from bright, delicate pastels to bold geometrics – embrace the colour!

Where are you based? I work from a studio in Cardiff Bay, which I think is the best area of the city. It is still developing and a lot of creative businesses have located here. I grew up in Peterston-super-Ely, which was very pretty and idyllic. As a designer, what makes you different? I hand-draw all of my patterns, so my unique handwriting sets me apart – as well as my off-key colour combinations. How would you describe your style? I create lively prints that balance bold graphic lines with a fresh, welcoming colour palette. We create a range of designs that offer the comfort, style and emotional appeal synonymous with a modern lifestyle.

SIAN ELIN The successful fabric/wallpaper designer on her bold graphic style and global influences

In the main, where do you draw your inspiration from? Our designs have brought a modern Scandinavian perspective to ceramics, tiles and architecture from across the globe – from the eastern and southern shores of the Mediterranean to the mountains of Peru.

When did you last cry? Last week – I stubbed my toe so hard that I shed a little tear.

Product-wise, what’s new in your world? We’ve just launched a brand-new kitchen textiles range. They’re a really inexpensive way of bringing a bit of pattern into your home, and are great for gifts!

Dream dinner party guests? Funny people. Kristen Wiig – I love her physical comedy; Dawn French – classic; Amy Poehler, because she makes the best faces; Kerry Howard – so funny in Him & Her.

If you could get up on your soapbox about a particular issue, what would it be? The way that the school system is set up now so that creative subjects don’t really get a lookin. You are only achieving if you go down the academic route and I think that’s missing a really important section of education and learning.

If push came to shove, what would be your final meal of choice? Probably my dad’s roast dinner!

Who’s the most famous person you follow on Twitter? Ooh, Taylor Swift! How do you relax? Running, circuit training, cooking, watching movies, exploring cities, socialising with friends, walking up mountains, eating out, and making furniture... Proudest moment so far? Selling my stationery at Oliver Bonas – it’s pretty cool spotting my cards in the various shops around the country.

106 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

If your nearest and dearest had to describe you, what would they say? Fun, neurotic, obsessive, creative, ambitious, willing to take risks. Who would play you in a film about your life? Amanda Seyfried – I love her. And we both have big eyes. What’s your guiltiest pleasure? I probably eat too much chocolate, but I don’t feel guilty about it! What’s the most important lesson life has taught you? Um, to try and be patient. What’s on your bookshelf at the moment? I’ve just finished Alan Johnson’s memoir, which was excellent. He paints an amazing picture of a slum-ridden Notting Hill in the 50s. And I’ve just

started Alan Bennett’s novella The Uncommon Reader, which is very funny. Which piece of music always sends a shiver down your spine? Angel’s Carol by John Rutter – a beautiful song with an amazing crescendo. Must-watch television programme(s)? Episodes, The Affair, The Honourable Woman. If you had a superpower, what would it be? I’d want to fly, so I could see amazing views and vistas to be inspired and absorbed by! Best thing about Cardiff? It’s small and friendly. Favourite shop in Cardiff? Home By Kirsty – the best independent interiors shop around. Locally, where do you like to eat and drink? Bar 44 in Cowbridge, Bully’s in Pontcanna. Secret or favourite Cardiff spot? I love the view from The Garth in Pentyrch. Finally, surprise us with a little-known fact about yourself… l learnt a lot of vocabulary growing up from reading racy Jilly Cooper books!
