S

o, it’s summer, then! (Y’know, just in case you hadn’t noticed these soaring temperatures). Of course, the law of sod, and the fact that the school holidays are beginning any day, means that by the time you read this it will probably be pouring with rain. Oh well, at least it will mean a change from the “Isn’t it hot?” conversations. And anyway, since when has a bit of precipitation stopped us from having fun? And talking of fun, in this issue we look ahead to the National Eisteddfod, plan your perfect day out with the kiddies in Cardiff, and talk all things barbecue with the lovely Sam from Hang Fire Southern Kitchen. Also, if you look closely again, you might notice we’ve had a makeover – just a touch cleaner and a little bit more contemporary, but still packed with all your favourite features, sections and regulars. So, weather permitting take us, and yourself, outside, enjoy the read, and we’ll see you in three weeks time, when we’ll do it all again!

Hot stuff

Everybody’s talking about…

Something for the weekend

With scorching fire shows, street dance, DJ showcases and an open-air cinema, the Barry Island Weekenders are making a comeback this summer. After attracting 43,000 visitors last year, a line-up of exciting entertainment is preparing to take place over at Barry Island, beginning with the Isle of Fire Weekender on 21 – 22 July. The Isle of Fire will once again see Barry Island transformed into a blazing spectacle, where the Lantern Parade, Viking Ship and live music will take over the gardens, along with live fire dance shows. This year’s Isle of Fire will also feature the mesmerising Mechanical Heart, a beating heart with light and music created by blacksmith Felicity Jones. The following weekend, it will welcome the Cinemor Weekender, a new event in collaboration with BAFTA Cymru. Joining other film fanatics in this limited capacity event, guests will enjoy the best of Welsh film and television with workshops and screenings of celebrated films such as Tiger Bay, The Edge of Love and Very Annie Mary. In the weeks following, people will be able to get moving with the Sports Weekender (4 – 5 August), be spellbound by the Magic and Street Theatre Weekender (11 – 12 August) and dance it out with Breakout Barry Weekender (18 – 19 August). On the final weekend of August, the Cinema by the Sea will be making a return to the gardens with open-air screenings of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial on 25 August, and The Greatest Showman on 26 August. For more: www.visitthevale.com

Days out

Sun, sea and sand The beach is back! The Capital FM Cardiff Bay Beach Festival is back bigger and better than ever – in a new waterfront location near Cardiff Bay Barrage – and packing even more attractions into the summer holidays. The new Beach Festival takes over Alexandra Head, the newly developed event site that was used for the Volvo Ocean Race Village and will be home to the Beach, throughout July and August for nine weeks of family entertainment. The increase in size means in addition to hosting its usual ingredients, the festival will boast large scale attractions such as a big wheel, roller coaster, big water spraying arches, movie nights, and a marquee area where visitors can enjoy the best in street food. Desperately seeking

WELSH WALTERS WANTED

The Cayman Islands Government Office is searching for relatives of the first Welsh settler of the uninhabited Islands back in 1658. The two first settlers of the previously uninhabited tropical paradise were a Welshman called ‘Walter’ and a Cornishman called ‘Bawden’ – both said to have been members of Cromwell’s forces in the West Indies. Their names subsequently morphed into ‘Watler’ and ‘Bodden’, which to this day are prevalent family names on the Islands. Eric Bush, Cayman Islands Representative to the UK said, “Just like the Welsh, we are immensely proud of our national identity, culture and history. Cayman has a rich and diverse population today – but it all began with these original two settlers, including a Welshman called ‘Walter’. “It would be great to find a family or persons from Wales that may have a connection with the Watler who settled in the Islands 360 years ago. “Our search for Walters is not just about reuniting long-lost relatives, it’s also a way of building closer links to Wales for the future. We have a great story to tell and we want to use this to educate more people about the Cayman Islands, our history, where we have come from and our national identity. It will allow us to connect to new audiences whilst instilling a greater sense of national pride at home. I hope through this search we can reunite some Walters from Wales with their distant cousins in Cayman.” For more: www.cigouk.ky Cayman Islands respresentative Eric Bush and Nick Pearce-Tomenius of Global Welsh

SUMMER READING

Making records

Multi award-winning suspense author, Evonne Wareham has released her latest book. A rom com, Summer in San Remo is a departure from her normal gripping, crime writing style. “It was great fun to write,” said Evonne who was born and grew up in Barry. “Romantic comedy isn’t something I’ve focused on before but it’s good to have a new challenge. I refer to it as writing in the sunshine, whereas with my suspense novels, it’s much more writing in the shadows.” As well as writing award-winning fiction, Evonne is studying for a PhD in history at Cardiff University. ON THE RECORD

University of South Wales School of Music and Sound has released a new vinyl sampler. Create is a compilation album showcasing a selection of the school’s artists. The featured tracks have been chosen by a panel of tutors and industry guests who spent a music-filled few weeks hotly debating the high standard of entries. The end result is a fantastic collection of 11 tracks written, performed and engineered by USW students, wrapped in a gatefold cover designed by MA Graphic student Kim Appleby and now available in Spillers Records. Ashli Todd from Spillers Records said, “Spillers has always been committed to supporting emerging new music; the Create Sampler provides the perfect tool to do just that. The compilation features quality tracks created by USW music students and we hope it becomes an annual release because the shoots at grassroots is where everything grows from.” For more: www.usw.ac.uk www.mediaclash.co.uk I CARDIFF LIFE I 9

BEING HUMAN Chapter’s latest exhibition, A Slight Ache focuses on work that uses materials drawn from daily life but that possess a visceral emotional intensity and suggestions of ritual or performance. They speak of the body, emerging and dissolving from the detritus of daily life, to describe a sense of collage as a way of thinking through the world. Here, the human form is something fragmented, in constant flux and interaction with its environment. The works in A Slight Ache are by a diverse group of artists, coming from a range of generations and geographies and installed in a way that sculpts a narrative. Works remain discreet and intact but, across the overall arc of the show, a picture is formed in the mind of the viewer – making a case for art making as something private, impulsive and devotional. The exhibition runs until 30 September. Chapter; www.chapter.org

The language instinct This year the National Eisteddfod of Wales is being held in Cardiff, and it’s kind of a big deal. Here’s why…. 30 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

FESTIVAL What is the National Eisteddfod? Put simply, it’s an absolutely massive celebration of Welsh language and culture. It’s said to date back to 1176 when Lord Rhys invited poets and musicians from all over Wales to a grand gathering in his castle at Cardigan. Every year it is held in a different area of Wales and this year it’s Cardiff ’s turn. Things have changed a bit since Lord Rhys’ shindig though, haven’t they? Yes! Well, mostly. The Eisteddfod still involves poets and musicians from all over Wales, so in that sense it’s still the same, but there’s a whole lot more to see and do too, and it seems unlikely that Lord R had rock bands playing… Also, it’s less of a grand gathering, more of an informal, fun kinda thing. Come for a few hours, a day, the whole eight days, it’s really up to you. So what exactly is there to do at the Eisteddfod? What isn’t there to do would probably be a better question! The programme of events is, quite frankly, massive. It all takes place in an area known as the Maes, which is made up of places such as the Wales Millennium Centre and the Senedd, as well as some other pop-up venues. Over the eight days, there are more than 1,150 events and activities, including a Children’s Literature Festival, Comedy Festival, food village, concerts, competitions, films, street theatre, concerts and carnivals. Basically. Something for everyone! Elen Elis, organiser and artistic director, says, “There are more activities than ever before this year, and the chance to experiment with a wide range of locations has enabled us to be ambitious in our approach. We hope that this will appeal to our regular Eisteddfod visitors as well as a new audience coming to the festival for the first time in Cardiff Bay. “One of the most exciting things about the Eisteddfod is that the programme is different every year as we travel around Wales. For example this year, a number off our activities have a Cardiff theme. The first Saturday on the open air stage is a celebration of the Cardiff music scene, with plenty of local young bands performing, with a set by the Crumblowers at the end of the day. We also have various sessions on the history of Cardiff during the week and lots of local artists performing on our various stages.

above, The National Eisteddfod is the chance for everyone to immerse

themselves in Welsh language and culture; right, You might be surprised at what you will find at the Eisteddfod!

“The chance to experiment with a wide range of locations has enabled us to be ambitious in our approach”

FESTIVAL “We’ve already announced details of another new strand this year, Mas ar y Maes, the partnership between the LGBT community, Stonewall Cymru and the Eisteddfod, and the response to this announcement has been excellent, so we’re all looking forward to these sessions during the week. “Encore is another new strand, and this is a series of classically themed musical activities. From performances by young students studying at the university to lectures and discussions on composers and performers from Wales, this is an important and wonderful addition to the Eisteddfod programme. “As we’re in Cardiff Bay, it would be a real shame not to take advantage of the interesting and varied landscape and history around us, so we’ve organised a number of guided tours during the week. Dylan Foster Evans will lead some of the tours looking at Cardiff ’s history, while Sioned Webb and Mair Tomos Ifans will be taking us on a tour exploring legends around the Bay. There’s a few theatrical tours as well and plenty of other activities, without forgetting our popular guided tours around the Maes – the perfect introduction to the Eisteddfod.” What’s the deal with the chair and crown thing then? The “Chairing of the Bard” and the “Crowning of the Bard” are one of the most important bits of the ceremony. They do have their roots back in the original Eisteddfod, actually, when a chair at the Lord’s table was awarded to the best poet and musician. Now, a new crown and chair is crafted for each Eisteddfod. The crown is presented for a free verse poem of no more than 250 lines on the first Monday of the festival, and the chair for a poem in more than one of the traditional poetic measures of no more than 250 lines with the ceremony on the final Friday. I don’t speak Welsh though. Will I still enjoy Eisteddfod? Absolutely! Everyone is welcome at the Eisteddfod, whatever language they speak. The Eisteddfod prides itself on the inclusive nature of the festival, and all the brochures and information on the website is fully bilingual all the Eisteddfod’s own signage and information around the Maes is bilingual. There are hundreds of activities aimed at people of all ages – and language is no barrier to having fun! There is a simultaneous translation service available free of charge in the Pavilion (where many of the competitions are held) and some of the evening concerts are also translated, and there are some handy leaflets with vocabulary for the ceremonies in the Pavilion. The Eisteddfod is also a great chance to start learning Welsh! Maes D on the Maes is full of information on how to start learning Welsh, or if you’ve already started learning, how to take the next step with your studies. Informative sessions aimed at learners of all levels are organised throughout the day too. I’m sold! How much do tickets cost and how do I get them? There are hundreds of events and activities which are absolutely free and don’t need a ticket, including the Science and Technology Village, cinema area, the ground floor of the Wales Millennium Centre, folk and traditional events, and the open air stage which will have live music from midday until late every day. Wristbands cost £10 a day and will give you access to the HSBC Pavilion in the Donald Gordon Theatre at the Centre during the week to enjoy all kinds of competitions, the ceremonies and the literary activities in the Literary Pavilion and all the events in the Theatre. You’ll also have access to the preliminary competitions held in the Centre. Tickets for the evening concerts in the Centre are extra. Where can I find the full programme of events? All the information about everything that’s going on is available on the Eisteddfod website, eisteddfod.wales. There’s additional information about some of the evening concerts on the Wales Millennium Centre website, www.wmc.org.uk 32 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

Cardiff: a capital of creativity As cities seek to grow their economies and define their place in the world, Creative Cardiff’s Sara Pepper and Kayleigh Mcleod explain why it is Cardiff’s creative scene which sets us apart

C

reative Cardiff, the network to help grow and connect the creative economy, has always been clear in its purpose to make the city the most creative place it can be. We firmly believe that Cardiff has all the makings of a capital of creativity – a widelyheld, but sometimes unspoken, conviction – and the focus of our work over the past three years has been to shine a light on this potential. And so, in December 2016 when we hosted an event to share our Cardiff University research on this wealth of creative activity happening across the city, we called it Cardiff: Creative Capital. We identified 2,788 creative companies, organisations and freelancers as well sectors of strength in film and television, music and craft. This data, coupled with our growing Creative Cardiff network and the city’s countless high profile and grassroots creative events, festivals and pieces of work such as City of the Unexpected, Save Womanby Street campaign and Festival of Voice, further cemented creativity as a cornerstone of life in the capital. The 2018 Creative Nation study from Nesta described Cardiff as a city experiencing

fast creative growth, supported by growing dynamism in digital technologies, and on track to become a central node within the UK’s creative geography. Cardiff is recognised as both the key hub for creative industries in Wales and one of the UK’s top ten cities for growth in numbers of creative businesses. In short, Cardiff ’s creative journey is on rails and gathering real momentum. It was announced in May that Cardiff had secured the Creative Cities Convention for 2019, chosen ahead of Bristol and Glasgow. By the end of the month, Cardiff was also in the running to host the new national headquarters of Channel 4. Leader of Cardiff Council and Chair of the Cardiff bid, Cllr Huw Thomas, said: “Culture, creativity and innovation are all at the heart of the city’s development, establishing Cardiff as one of the UK’s creative powerhouses, and developing one of the largest creative sectors outside London.” Cardiff ’s potential is further intensified because unlike other creatively ‘hot cities’, it is also a national creative hub, home to many

Welsh creative and cultural organisations with an international reach including the booming national companies (Welsh National Opera, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Wales Millennium Centre, National Museum Wales, National Theatre Wales, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, National Dance Company Wales, Literature Wales and Ffilm Cymru Wales). And while we’re on the subject of creative hubs, we have to mention the innovative coworking spaces which have opened their doors in the region during the last few years. These hubs are lynchpins to economic development, enterprise and entrepreneurship in the creative industries and work homes to the buoyant freelance, start-up and SME communities. The founding hubs of our Coworking Collective – Rabble Studio, The Sustainable Studio, Tramshed Tech, Welsh ICE and Hwyl Hub – support more than 245 companies, equating to around 550 people. In response to the ongoing growth of the creative economy, we’re delighted to be partnering with the School of Journalism, Media and Culture at Cardiff University to offer a Master’s degree in Cultural and Creative Industries. This course will enable students to develop the skills, knowledge and industry experience necessary for a career in this rapidly growing sector. What else do we see for the future? Well, if the trajectory of the last couple of years are anything to go by – there will be more growth, more partnership working and greater emphasis on the importance of innovation. n

Explore the secrets of Cardiff Castle

9-11am: Take a visit to Cardiff Castle and have a go at the family and/or animal trails. The trails will take you around the grounds and into the apartments, hunting for information and the answers to questions. Along the way you’ll meet many of the characters that have made Cardiff Castle their home over the centuries, including Gwen the Celtic Girl, Marcius the Roman soldier and Banquo the dog. Make sure you download the app before you leave home so you can listen to their stories. Trail booklets can be bought from the ticket office and gift shop, and don’t forget that if you live or work in Cardiff you can get a Castle Key which, for £6.50, gives you free admission for three years.

An enormous (but friendly!) crocodile

12.30pm: Pop into the Wales Millennium Centre where there’s often free family-friendly events and activities going on. While you’re there, take a pit stop at Ffresh for a quick drink and a snack. 1.30pm: Walk round to the other side of the Bay to Techniquest (you could grab an ice cream from Cadwaladers to lick en route if the mood takes you). There are science shows, planetarium shows and tons of interactive activities all aimed at kids. The kids will be entertained and educated – double win! 4.30pm: Meander down the Cardiff Bay Barrage to the Enormous Crocodile Bench where you can pause for a photo (and a rest if

little legs are getting a bit tired). Carry on a bit further and you’ll find the children’s play area. 6pm: Head to the Red Dragon centre for a refuel. There’s plenty of places to eat and drink, but the Spice Route is especially good for children, as the buffet-style restaurant means that a) there’s no waiting around to be served, b) there’s plenty of choice so there won’t be arguments because everyone wants something different to eat and c) the live cooking provides plenty of entertainment. 7pm: If you’re not all worn out yet then, while you’re at the Red Dragon Centre, catch a film. If you’re lucky, you might be able to catch a 3D screening!

11.15am: When you’re castled out, stroll to Bute Park seeing how many different animals you can spot on the animal wall along the way. 11.30am: Hop on the boat from Bute Park that will take you down to Cardiff Bay. Sure, you could get the train or drive, but this way is much more fun! 12pm: Take a ride on the world’s only Welshthemed carousel, complete with horses, dragon chariots and organ music.

Growing old gracefully

G

Pay a visit to DR ZENA to help slow the signs of ageing

one are the days when women have to accept their lot and grow old disgracefully. Thanks to the array of beauty treatments now available there are countless ways that we can try to delay, or at least disguise the visible encroachment of old age. With the age of Instagram it can feels as if there is more pressure than ever to look young, lose weight and defy the ageing process. It can be all to easy to find ourselves in a constant battle against an everencroaching tide of grey, a sagging rear, and hairs appearing where there were once none. Some things we can, perhaps, make peace 50 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

with, others less so. Because while it can be all too easy to simply say that laughter lines and crow’s feet and the like are all just a sign of a life well-lived, all too often these signs of ageing can have a detrimental effect on selfconfidence and self-esteem. This is where a professional, such as Dr Zena who practices at The Parade in Roath can help. Dr Zena is fully trained to administer antiwrinkle injections (commonly known as Botox) and fillers, which can help smooth out lines and help to disguise signs of ageing. Everyone has seen Hollywood stars with seemingly frozen faces, and Lesley Ash’s misguided trout pout is practically the stuff of legend, but in expert hands, like Dr Zena’s there’s no risk of walking out of the parade having undergone any such mishap. Clients at The Parade need not worry,

The reception at The Parade

however, as before any work is carried out Dr Zena will conduct a thorough consultation, carrying out “stretch tests” on areas that may need some assistance to disguise the tell-tale signs of ageing, to see just how much (if any) treatment is needed. She will then advise whether to use anti-wrinkle injections using Azzalure, (Botulinum Toxin Type A) or fillers, or a combination of the two. Azzalure uses the toxin produced by the bacteria responsible for botulism in food poisoning, which might sound scary, but it’s used only in very small amounts to temporarily weaken the muscles responsible for developing facial expression lines so any risks are minimal. It is, however, vital to ensure that, like Dr Zena, your therapist is properly qualified before you undergo any treatment. For anyone new to this type of treatment, it’s usual to begin with the injections and first

“Dr Zena is fully trained to administer antiwrinkle injections (commonly known as Botox) and fillers”

assess the results, before deciding whether anything further is needed. And by building up the treatment gradually there’s little to no chance of ending up with any unfortunate results, and the results will look much more natural. As with any clinical treatment, there are some risks involved, but Dr Zena will ensure that all clients are fully briefed on any possible side effects, and given the best possible advice on how to prepare for treatment (drink plenty of water to ensure the skin is well hydrated and don’t wear make-up to the appointment) and on after care (avoid saunas, direct sunlight, bending down and exercising for 24 hours). Treatment begins with Dr Zena marking the areas of the face to be treated and ensuring that the areas are all properly sterilised before any injections are administered. Discomfort during the procedure is minimal, and even on more sensitive areas it’s no more unpleasant than having your eyebrows threaded. The effects can begin to be seen almost instantly, but will continue to develop for four to 10 days after treatment, so as time passes you will almost see the years drop off! Two weeks after treatment clients are asked to return to The Parade for a check up so the results can be assessed and it can be decided if any more treatment is needed. n

SUMMER BEAUTY

“It’s essential our facial skin is protected”

A

ccording to George Gershwin, “Summertime, and the livin’ is easy.” Well, George, you clearly didn’t weren’t bothered by with melting makeup, frizzy hair and all manner of other aesthetic issues, were you? Because, while a proper, hot summer is doubtless a fabulous thing, high temperatures can pose a bit of a challenge for a beauty regime, which is especially not ideal when it’s also the season for taking all manner of sunny selfies.

SKIN DEEP

There’s few people who don’t love the feeling of warm rays on bear skin, but it is, of course, vital to protect against harmful UVA and UVB and the face is often the area of the body to bare the brunt. “During summer it’s essential our facial skin is protected,” says Caroline Sims, director of sales and marketing at Cardiff’s Park Plaza hotel, home to the Laguna Spa. “UV damage can cause pigmentation and accelerate signs of ageing. At Laguna Spa we offer an ESPA Optimal Skin Profacial which can help enhance your skin’s natural strength and suppleness. As part of ESPA’s holistic approach towards mindfulness, health, and wellness, the facial uses in-depth analysis using SkinVision™ technology. It identifies skin conditions not visible to the naked eye and counteracts sun damage by delaying signs of ageing. For daily protection, apply an SPF 15 BB cream, like ESPA’s Naturally Radiant Tinted Moisturiser. Remember too, that although it’s vital in summer, protection from UV should be a priority across

www.mediaclash.co.uk I CARDIFF LIFE I 53

the entire year.” Dr Zena Aseeley, is a dentist and is also trained to provide anti-wrinkle treatments and dermal fillers. She echoes Caroline’s advice on the importance of yearround sun protection. “Always wear an SPF protection cream,” she says. “Not just when you are sunbathing; make it an every day habit. This is key to prevent premature aging of the skin. “Also, it’s important to think ‘hydration, hydration, hydration.’ Drink plenty of water all year round, but especially in summer. Ensuring that you are getting your two litres per day will help keep your skin supple and moist from the inside out.” Sometimes, though, you may wish to seek some extra help to help hide the signs of aging. “Anti wrinkle restorative treatments, commonly referred to as BotoxR can also help to smooth the skin and give your face a rejuvenated appearance,” says Zena. “Especially considering that during the summer we tend to squint and frown from the sunlight more and that tends to exaggerate the appearance of wrinkles particularly around the eyes. These treatments will help to relax the muscles used in these expressions and smooth the overlying skin.” Dr Kate Evans from Vale Aesthetics also administers anti-wrinkle treatments. “In the summer, heavy makeup is the last thing our skin needs,” she says. “If you are fed up of buying expensive creams that promise to reduce lines and then invariably disappoint then why not try something that will wind back the years giving you a more youthful appearance? Botulinum toxin injections are very effective, safe and long lasting.” And, she adds, the injections can have an additional use too. “They can also be used to greatly reduce underarm sweating. Avoiding certain fabrics or colours because of embarrassing sweat marks can be a thing of the past. “Be your beautiful self this summer. Being confident and relaxed in your own skin is the new you!”

GET GLOWING

If you’re looking for that golden glow, but all the time you’re being forced to spend in the pesky office is getting in the way of your sunbathing time, then the Sun Shack in the Capitol Shopping Centre could be the answer. “Preparation is key when using our ultimate relaxation sunbeds,” says owner Joshua Parfitt. “It is important to shower prior to your tanning session, as clean skin will utilise the UV rays far better to allow for a deeper goldenhued tan. We provide you with makeup wipes, as certain makeup can effect/block the UV rays. “Using one of our high quality tan accelerators will maximise your results by giving a longer lasting luscious golden glow. They also protect your skin – protecting it from dying out during the session. “You will continue to tan and produce melanin for at least 12 hours after your session, so be sure to maintain healthy moisturised skin for this entire period. Instagram is full of celebs and like with fabulous beach hair, but although it looks low maintenance, getting that sun-kissed look takes a bit of preparation, as Simon Daniel, salon director at Belle Toujours, explains. “Summer months always lend well to relaxed hair styles think ‘California girl’ loose waves, a soft golden balyage enriched with hues from caramel to icy blonde,” he says. “This look is pretty universal and can be adapted for short hair as well as looking good on mid to long length tresses. The golden look tends to flatter olive to dark skin tones – think Jennifer Lopez – while pale skin tones suit ‘icy’ hues; the poster girl for this would be the gorgeous Sienna Miller or Kate Moss. “You will need a good colourist to ensure they subtlety create the desired ‘just got off the beach’ effect. We use Joico products in the salon (considered one the best hair brands in the world) and we always consider the client’s face shape, skin tone and eye colour before we recommend the desired tones to go for. Once you’ve got the colour right the styling is pretty simple and can easily be recreated at home, appliances such as straighteners are not required, a good blowdry is all you need and a ‘sea salt style product’ – we recommend Joico’s Structure Glamtex Spray.” If you like your hair to be smooth and straight then humidity is not your friend. (Remember that episode of Friends when Monica goes to Barbados….). Goji Hair in Pontcanna though offers a Nanokeratin Pure smoothing treatment which could be the answer, especially if you usually use heat styling to tame your tresses. “Not only does it last for 12 weeks,” says Creative Director Greg James, “it also means that you won’t have to pack any straighteners when you go away, freeing up valuable suitcase space. “The sun and chlorine also takes it toll so avoiding further damage through applying excessive heat is key. Nanokeratin Pure also makes your hair humidity-proof and controls frizz. The treatment takes three hours so it’s a great opportunity to get some pre-holiday beauty treatments done whilst you’re in the salon too!” According to Ken Picton though, owner of the Ken Picton salon in Cardiff Bay, this summer is all about the curls. “Curls are a huge trend for this summer with the perm becoming popular again and women embracing their natural texture,” he says. “Curls suit pretty much all face shapes and can be worn loose or used as a base for a relaxed up-do. “Avoid heat styling during the summer and instead create the look using products to enhance your natural texture, and twisting damp hair around your fingers – you can pin into place until they dry for a more defined curl. Curls are more prone to drying out so avoid products containing alcohol and instead use serums or curl creams. “Colour-wise, hand painted balayage on curls catches the light and enhances the shape. Curls look beautiful in natural shades but equally, a striking shade such as a vibrant red or pastel pink, gets an extra boost from the texture of a curl.” n

Pure alchemy

Cocktail bar The Alchemist has now opened. Selfproclaimed “masters in the dark arts of molecular mixology” they’re bringing their cocktail-based brand of showmanship to St Mary’s Street. Expect concoctions such as “Bubblebath” which includes fairy liquid alongside Tanqueray gin, Aperol, Chambord, lemon and apple in the list of ingredients (we can only assume/hope it’s not actually washing up liquid) and “Colour Changing One” which contains magic – apparently. There’s a pretty sizeable food menu on offer too.

On the right page A new cookbook created to raise money for the Velindre Cancer Care Centre in Cardiff has attracted support from some of South Wales’ top chefs, as well as Hollywood actor Michael Sheen. The Velindre Cookbook contains recipes from patients and their families, focusing on positive memories of treats, meals and celebrations, and top chefs including Anand George (Purple Poppadom), Stephen Gomes (Moksh), Sam Evans and Shauna Guinn (Hang Fire) and Chris Harrod (The Whitebrook) selected their favourites. The foreword has been written by Michael Sheen, who said, “I heard about the work of Velindre from Rhod Gilbert who is a patron of the centre and given my accolade as winner of Celebrity Bake Off what could be better than to endorse a cookbook! I have seen the impact cancer has on the lives of individuals and their families and anything we can do to make the battle that little bit easier is surely a good thing. The Velindre Cancer Centre cookbook idea is such a great idea and I hope it reminds families not only of the many great memories they’ve had together, but gives them an opportunity to create many more.” The books costs £10 and is available at the Velindre Cancer Centre, independent bookshops and via the Velindre Patient Cookbook Facebook page.

Food waste fighters Too Good To Go are challenging citizens in Cardiff to join the food waste revolution. A shocking 19,133 perfectly edible meals end up in the bin every day from food establishments all over the Welsh capital. If these meals were saved from landfill, the environmental benefit would be the same as taking 2,993 cars off the city’s roads each year. To date, Cardiff residents have rescued more than 4,800 meals from pioneering

local food retailers including YO! Sushi, Milk & Sugar, KILN+ILK, Pettigrew Bakeries and Get Wonky via the free Too Good To Go app, reducing CO2 as much as growing 250 trees for 10 years. In just the last week another 20 businesses across Cardiff have joined the fight against food waste. Thanks to their superior workmanship skills the pair can complete almost any alterations to give garments the perfect fit. “You can buy a suit off the peg and bring it in here and we can make the alterations so it will look and feel like it has been made especially for

you,” says Kasim. “Or we can make repairs to bring new life into a old favourite. “We can work with anything, from suits and shirts to wedding dresses. We can even make a bespoke suit form scratch for you if you can provide the fabric.” Kasim and Murat have some top credentials, having made suits for the likes of Gareth Bale and the Welsh football team. They’re super-speedy workers too, and offer a same day service so if you bring something in first thing in the morning it can be ready for you to hit the town in that evening. “There is no charge until we have completed the work,” says Kasim. “If you bring something in and tell us what you need we’ll be able to tell

you if we are able to do it and what it will cost, then it’s up to you to decide if you want to go ahead. FOOD & DRINK DEAN EUDEN

SUMMER SIPS Dean Euden, on what to quaff as the temperatures rise

T

his could be the first “summer drinks” article in UK history that wasn’t growled at by people reading it whilst sheltering from torrential rain and driving winds. Historically I would have been better recommending different recipes of hot toddy at this time of year, yet here I am typing this with a bead of sweat on my nose and a flourish of almost Mediterranean optimism tripping off my fingers and on to my lap top. There is one word that is vital when talking about drinks in the sun…alcohol. The two things guaranteed to make you feel like you have been ten rounds with Joe Calzaghe are sun and alcohol, so the first thing I will say is keep the drinks light on ethanol. Wines that are knocking on the door of 14% and cocktails that contain nothing more than different varieties of spirits are going to leave you looking like a sure thing for A&E.

“Wine is a joy and much of the joy comes from exploration and discovery”

Rather than dashing all over the planet for my wine recommendations (seriously who has the energy) I have chosen the Loire Valley for both your whites, reds and rosé. The Loire is a cooler climate French wine region well known for both whites and reds. From Nantes near the coast through to the Sancerre appellation the Loire Valley wine region stretches some 630+ miles into the heart of France. There are more than 4,000 wineries making an array of styles: sweet whites, complex bubbles, bone dry light whites, fruit forward reds and refreshing rosés. It’s a one-stop shop for all things grapey and for that I’m an eternal fan. Think beyond Sancerre for white wine to other appellations like Menetou-Salon, Touraine and Quincy for Sauvignons that have their own distinct style and don’t hit the pocket so hard. The Loire is also the home of the wonderful summer friendly Muscadet wines made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape variety. Look for the words “sur lie” on the label for wines that show a slightly weightier mouth feel with a little more complexity. “Sur lie” means “on the lees” and tells you that the winemaker has left his or her wine in contact with the dead yeast (lees) for weeks or sometimes even months. A good quality Cabernet Franc from the Chinon Appellation can be a wonderful thing and you can generally separate the reds from Chinon into two styles, a lighter style with fresher fruit and good acidity and the more

medium bodied style with complexity and darker fruit characteristics. For summer, go with the first. Happily, the same red appellation of Chinon makes some wonderful rosé from the same grape, these are light, dry and fruity and perfect for picnics. If you want to raise the price and try something of nobler origins Sancerre make some fine rosé from Pinot Noir, as Chinon expect a lighter dry style rosé with red berry fruit and good fresh acidity. Finally for those who want a cocktail I would keep it simple and fresh, mojitos and caipirinhas are the order of the day, similar in style these two drinks are refreshing and cooling with the main component beyond the white rum in the mojito being limes, mint and soda, whilst Brazilian spirit cachaca in the caipirinha is added after muddling lime and sugar. So, the above are my go to drinks this summer and I know you want me to spell out recommendations for actual wines so you can all drift along to my directed establishment and purchase at your leisure. However, wine is a joy and much of the joy comes from exploration and discovery, the best way to do that is to get your bottom off the sofa and seek out your local wine merchant. They are not scary places but wondrous abodes with smiley people eager to help! These are your oracles and the gatekeepers to some favourite wines you haven’t even drunk yet. So don’t delay… off with you! Burst through the door with a confident stride and declare in your loudest voice, “I want the finest wines available to humanity, I want them here and I want them now” (other film quotes are available), failing that you can just say hello and show them the article. Best of luck intrepid grapey peeps…À votre santé! ■ Dean is a business development manager for the Wine & Spirit Educational Trust (WSET). www.wsetglobal.com

Preparing for old age

REBECCA OAKLEY FAMILY LAW can help you get your affairs in order

o one wants to imagine themselves unable to make a decision about their finances or their health and medical treatment but, with an ageing population, that is an increasingly likely scenario for many. Making a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is one way of future-proofing yourself by appointing people you trust to make good decisions for you and on your behalf should it ever come to the point that you cannot do so for yourself. Making an LPA doesn’t automatically mean your children can plonk you in a care home, sell your house and sail off round the world as there

are strict rules about what an attorney may do on behalf of the donor (you) and when they can make decisions on your behalf. An LPA can be made to cover decisions about your finances or your health/welfare or you can do both if you prefer. At Rebecca Oakley Family Law both of our solicitors, Rebecca and Belinda, take a pragmatic approach to ensuring your wishes are reflected in any document which you sign to grant a power of Attorney to anyone else, whether family, friend or professional. We will always do our best to ensure it is something you want to do, not something you are being encouraged to do by someone else. n

he arrival of summer means that it seems just about impossible to step outside the front door without catching a smoky whiff of barbecuing meat wafting in the breeze from somewhere or another. But while most of us are – quite literally – fair weather barbecue chefs, as one half of the pair of grilling goddesses behind Hang Fire Southern Kitchen in Barry, Sam Evans is flame-side day in and day out. Consequently, there ain’t much she doesn’t know about getting the best from a barbie. Recently, Marks & Spencer tapped up Sam’s expertise, asking her to come up with a recipe using their “Best Ever Burger” and she jumped at the chance to use the opportunity to showcase some of her favourite Welsh ingredients, creating the Run Rarebit Run burger featuring confit leeks, two types of cheese and a bacon jam. “Wales has got some really great produce,” she says, “and to have someone like M&S talking about them is only going to be positive. “At Hang Fire we are purveyors of fine meat, and burgers are the thing we sell the most of, so we wouldn’t get behind a product that we didn’t believe in. These M&S burgers have got a decent fat content, which many burgers don’t have, and they are really juicy and delicious. “For me, this was about creating something that represented the traditions of Wales, but without it being something really conventional, and all the ingredients I used were sourced from a roughly 50 mile radius.” Sam chose two Welsh cheeses for the rarebit element of the burger – Hafod, a kind of Welsh Cheddar from Wales longest certified organic dairy farm, and the Gouda-esque Teifi. “They are such great cheeses, we love them,” she says. “The Hafod gives tons of flavour, and the Tefi melts to become really gooey and give the structure which helps hold it all together. You want a real ooze, but you don’t want the burger to collapse before it gets to your mouth! I also put in some Welsh oatmeal stout for depth and that gorgeous yeasty flavour. “Leeks are a great swap out for onions, and I added some homegrown thyme, and I made my own pickles to go in it too. “I think a cheese and bacon burger is one of the best comfort foods ever, so I wanted to get that bacon flavour in there, but not in an obvious way, so I made a bacon jam.” It’s a recipe that’s, perhaps, a little more involved than your average home-made beefy bite (the recipe’s over the page though in case you want to give it a go) but Sam is keen to encourage people to get more experimental with their barbecues. “If you want to stick with burgers and sausages then try to get a bit more inventive with the condiments. Or you could even try

some rubs,” she says. “But you could create a whole barbecue without any burgers and sausages. I think it’s really fun to cook large cuts of meat, like a rump or onglet or bavette. If you cook them whole, when you cut them open they are still lovely and pink in the middle. It’s much harder to control that with a smaller piece. “That method also works well for a veg – a whole aubergine, or big discs of butternut squash, or a whole onion in the coals are all delicious. “The other great thing about cooking larger cuts is that you can kick back a bit more and have a beer and you don’t have to be monitoring every second of the cooking. Barbecues are meant to be fun!” As anyone who’s ever tried cooking over coals knows though, it’s not as simple as just chucking meat on the heat and hoping for the best. “If you’ve got a barbecue with a lid that’s going to really help you,” advises Sam. “Basically you’re creating an oven. When I barbecue I only put the charcoal on half of it. Then you can get the cooking going over the fuel so you’ll get those lovely char marks, but then move it to the side that isn’t over the coal and close the lid. “One of my biggest pieces of advice though is to never barbecue without a meat thermometer. It’s really hard to guess when a piece of chicken is done, and the last thing you want to do is to give your guests food poisoning!” “Another tip is to always oil your meat or veg, not the grate. Oil and flames don’t mix well! “Something that really bothers me is when I see skewers loaded up with different meat and veg – all of those things will cook at different times so if you try to cook them all at once you’re going to end up with some things burnt and others raw. If you want to do that style of cooking, then load up one skewer with chicken, for example, another with courgettes, another with peppers etc – that way you can cook everything evenly.” If you want to see Sam sharing her expertise first hand this summer, she’ll be out and about at various festivals with her cooking partner Shauna Guinn, including the Abergavenny Food Festival and the Good Life Festival in September. If that, along with running the restaurant, isn’t enough to keep the two of them busy, they’re also currently filming series two of Sam and Shauna’s Big Cook Out which should be hitting TV screens in spring next year. And, if you want to try creating some Hang Fire-style dishes at home then the Hang Fire Cookbook is out now. www.hangfiresouthernkitchen.com

Run Rarebit Run Burgers (makes 4) Ingredients: For the burgers 4 x M&S Best Ever Seeded Burger Buns 4 x M&S Our Best Ever Burgers Welsh Rarebit confit leeks (recipe below) 12 slices sweet dill pickles 8 tbl Bacon Jam (recipe below) 1 /4 iceberg lettuce, finely shredded For the bacon jam 4 cloves of garlic, finely chopped 300g red onion, diced 500g back bacon 3 tbsp soft light brown sugar 3 tbsp maple syrup 2 tsp smoked paprika 2 tbsp toasted cumin seeds, finely ground 1 tsp toasted fennel seeds, finely ground 2 tsp toasted coriander seeds, finely ground 2 tsp cracked black pepper ½ tsp chili powder 80ml balsamic vinegar 80ml brewed medium coffee For the Welsh Rarebit with confit leeks 3 leeks, cut into rings 2 eschalion shallots, cut into rings 1tsp butter 4 sprigs of fresh thyme pinch cracked black pepper pinch of sea salt flakes 1 tsp English mustard powder 2 tbsp plain flour 5 tbsp oatmeal stout 30g butter 1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce 80g Hafod cheese, grated 80g Teifi cheese, grated

Method: 1. Start by making the bacon jam. Take a small pan and toast the cumin, coriander and fennel seeds. When they start to look toasty, smell fragrant and getting a little colour, transfer to a pestle and mortar or spice grinder and pound until they’re powder ground, then set aside. 2. Fry off your bacon in batches, to allow rashers to get crispy, about 8-10 mins on a medium heat. Transfer the bacon onto kitchen paper to absorb the excess fat. 3. Use 2 tbsp of the bacon fat left in the frying pan to sauté the red onions and garlic for 10-12 minutes on a low to medium heat until softened. Add the dry spices and stir before adding the maple syrup, brown sugar, coffee and vinegar. Keep stirring for a few minutes. 4. Remove the fat from the crispy bacon and chop the meat into small pieces. Add bacon meat to pan of onion, garlic and spices. Simmer on a low temperature stirring every now and then for about 20-25 minutes until the mixture starts to reduce and thicken up. 5. Finally, transfer the mixture to a food processor and pulse (being careful not to puree) until it looks like a spreadable consistency. Keep in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to a week. 6. To make the Welsh Rarebit with confit leeks, cut the white part of the leek and the shallots into rings and run under a tap to clean. In a heavy bottomed pan, and on a low to medium

heat, add in the leeks and shallots, seasoning and thyme sprigs and cook for around 25 minutes until very soft with a thick consistency, adding the butter at the end for richness. 7. Melt the butter in a small pan and stir in the mustard and plain flour. Add the oatmeal stout and Worcestershire sauce. Heat over a low heat for a few minutes, stirring constantly to make sure there are no lumps. 8. Next add your cheeses. Organic Hafod cheese will give you tons of rich aged cheddar flavour and the Teifi, which has a gooey Dutch-style cheese texture, will give the sauce structure. Add in 3-4 tbsp of your confit leeks. Stir vigorously over a low heat for a minute until the cheese has melted being careful not to overheat and to split the cheese. To Assemble: 1. These burgers are thick and juicy so we used our palms to press down the burgers a little to flatten, making a little dimple in the middle to help with even cooking. Generously season your burgers either side with sea salt flakes and cracked black pepper just before cooking, on either the barbecue or under the grill. Thoroughly cook your burgers according to packet instructions. Allow them to rest for 5 -10 minutes while you build your burger. 2. Toast your buns on both sides. On the bottom half of the bun, add 2 tablespoons of bacon jam, followed by 3 pickles and a small handful of shredded iceberg. 3. Add your cooked burger patty, then top with 2-3 tablespoons of Welsh rarebit. Close the bun lid and enjoy! n

y partner and I split up 13 years ago after buying a house together four years previously. I have continued to live here and have paid the mortgage ever since. I would like to reach a settlement with her so that I can change the title and the mortgage back to my sole name but I am led to believe that my ex-partner is living abroad. What share of the value of the house will she be entitled to? A: It’s always much better to get these things sorted out at the time. Although the court can divide shares in jointly owned property, you are first going to have to make efforts to try and trace her so that she can be served with the documents. If you cannot track her down through your own enquiries, then you should engage a tracing agency to try and locate her. In terms of settlement, much will depend on

the nature of your joint ownership, whether it is joint tenancy, i.e. survivor takes all, or tenants in common, whereby each has a declared percentage ownership. Most joint owners in this country hold as joint tenants which means you would need to give your ex-partner half of the present equity There are still arguments which can be made about your having reduced the capital balance on the mortgage and paid for improvement works over the years which would have enhanced the value of the property. It would be sensible to see a solicitor to try and calculate a fair settlement. n

Visiting a ward to mark 70 years of the NHS

Celebrate T good times! There’s plenty of reasons to be cheerful, says Andrea Byrne

his summer, whether you are Welsh or English, even those most disinterested in sport have found themselves keeping one eye on the fortunes of England in the World Cup. Borders aside, it’s been just one more excuse, if one were needed, to gather together with friends in the salubrious sunshine to share a view of history in the making – and to celebrate some success. It’s a similar opportunity for celebration that many grasp annually at Wimbledon – and my husband and I were lucky enough to go with friends to centre court during the recent heat wave. I hope we did our best to ensure, that despite a lack of Welsh representation on court, the mighty dragon was flying high in SE1. After all, it couldn’t have been more perfect weather to appreciate the magic of the match, the scent of sweet strawberries and the perk of a Pimms! Thank you Tennis Wales for a wonderful day and wonderful company.

“All of us have a story of gratitude for the everyday heroes of the National Health Service” 78 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

Well, the sunshine in itself has given us cause for celebration, hasn’t it? And it’s been feeding our gardens just as much as it has our social lives. Although my lawn may not quite have that Wimbledon stripe, it is in full bloom. Every year, I bravely experiment with a new bloom, willing for it to flourish. This year, I was surprised to see a wisteria I took a punt on, blossoming with purple flowers for the very first time. There’s a simple satisfaction in watching a plant come to life – and then taking credit for it! It’s found its place comfortably amongst the sweet pea of last year and the rose bushes from the previous one. Better late than never, my fingers are finally finding their green! Once again, something to celebrate! Celebrations, of course, too, in the NHS. It was born, thanks to Welsh politician Aneurin Bevan, 70 years ago this summer. And for all its 21st-century challenges, all of us have a story of gratitude for the everyday heroes of the National Health Service, whether that be in our hospitals, the ambulance service, our GPs’ surgery or elsewhere. So, how better to mark it at ITV Cymru Wales, than with a special live outside broadcast from one of the wards itself, where the hard work never stops? Thank you to all at LLandough hospital near Cardiff

Andrea’s blooms

for hosting us for a birthday party with a difference! Continuing the health theme, I pledged my support to the ‘Deeds Not Words’ campaign being launched by mental health charity Hafal. Our mental health is just one of THE big wellbeing issues we all need to focus on tackling at the moment. And Hafal has produced a 10-point plan to focus on women’s health, in particular focusing on vulnerable women in society. Positive action for a positive future. So let’s put out the bunting for Hafal too, and make sure their plan comes together! Keep smiling, everyone! n

As an employment lawyer, I help employers and HR teams with their people and organisation development strategies by putting in place effective workplace solutions. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? Being made partner at Acuity Legal before reaching 35 years of age. Not only did this give me confidence that I’m respected as a lawyer, but it’s also given me opportunities to develop as a woman in business. What is the biggest challenge you face? Sometimes forgetting that I can’t do everything! I’ve always been driven to do more, so sometimes I need to remind myself that less is more. I personally find that challenging at times! What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? Don’t take yourself too seriously and do what you enjoy. I’m lucky that I now do a job I love in a great firm, but it took a while to understand what suits me best and how to make that happen. What advice would you give anyone thinking of going into your industry? Spend your training years learning the law and building your network. Getting the basic foundations right early on in your career will stand you in good stead in the long run.

Tell us about your business in one sentence? We’re a consultancy for Big Data – especially Splunk and Cyber Security, AWS/Azure Cloud, and Automation/DevOps. How did you get into your industry? By accident! Post-uni, I needed a job, and ended up in a series of IT jobs, including dial-up internet support. I started in the Big Data space in 2011, again by accident, trying to solve a problem of a lot of data and not enough people to search through it with the tools we had at the time. Was this always your dream career? No. I’ve wanted to be a lot of different thingsbut this is what it’s turned out I’m good at and I enjoy it. It really speaks to my desire to fix things – processes, systems, and similar. And to answer interesting questions we didn’t know we could ask of the data starting out. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? Runner-up in the Infrastructure Innovation of the Year category at the UK IT Awards in 2014; it was external validation of a few challenging years, where there had been highs and lows. Some of the highs of the time included an RoI on the first two years’-worth of spend – the RoI was achieved inside TWO HOURS! That’s the moment that some lights went on at the company I was working for that I might be on to a game-changing concept.

degree, which I spent with a charity as the communications intern. Prior ambitions to become a journalist quickly turned to the PR and marketing sector, and armed with the experience gained at the charity I was able to secure a graduate position with a marketing agency quite quickly. Was this always your dream career? I didn’t even know PR existed as a career prospect before my placement with the charity, but if I had… it would have been my dream career! What’s been the highlight of your career so far? Branching out on my own to launch Technical Marketing & PR. We celebrated our seventh year of trading in June which has been the best highlight so far. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced? Starting out as a fresh-faced graduate working in traditionally male dominated sectors. Proving my ability to understand fiercely technical subjects and earning the respect of clients was initially a challenge, but extremely rewarding when I succeeded. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? Always make a decision. It might be right, it might be wrong – but it’s better than indecision. And if it is the ‘wrong’ one, it’s a great opportunity for learning and improving in future. What’s your career goal? To build a sustainable business with a supportive and fun culture that nurtures future talent. We’ve already carved out a niche in our industry, so I’m looking forward to building on this by growing the team and our client base in South Wales. What three words would your colleagues use to describe you? Ambitious, bubbly and client-focused. If you weren’t doing this job, what would you be doing? Volunteering at a cat rescue centre. #crazycatlady

Who is your biggest career inspiration and why? Steve Jobs. He obviously wasn’t the easiest person to work with all of the time, and he wasn’t the most technical, but he was clearthinking in how arts and technology intersect to create wonderful outcomes to fix things we didn’t know were broken. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced? Balancing work and home life. Thank you, my wonderful partner for doing 90% of the work at home while sustaining her own career. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? “Prove it.” Putting things down on paper, or committing them into code, or proving the concepts and taking them forward into delivery – my grandfather taught me that it wasn’t enough to know it, I had to prove it. The second most important piece of advice has been to “go for it” – so many times we can get stuck, see all the obstacles and let them obscure the opportunities. Weighing up the risks and being aware of them, and then making a sensible decision to still go for it has been really important to me too – responsibly not recklessly! What’s your career goal? I want to make my consultancy a success, growing skills and the workforce in South Wales. I particularly want to enable women, workforce returners, those who think they’ve missed an opportunity. I want to prove that a successful consultancy can be fun, and can be profitable without over-working its most valuable asset – the people that do the work.

What advice would you give anyone thinking of going into your industry? Go for it – it’s a lot of fun, it’s a seller’s market; there is competition, but also a lot of collaboration, and very very little conflict. And it’s a growing space with massive shortages of skills. Anyone with GCSE maths and a basic grasp of some computing essentials is going to be able to train up, learn from others, and be reasonably successful. You don’t have to have a masters in computer science to be effective. Diversity really helps, bringing in experience from other areas, other careers and other cultures throws different insights onto data analysis. I’d love it if someone wanted to get into the industry through my company as I look to grow the team, but there are so so many opportunities out there at the moment. Go for it.

Waterstone Homes Ltd 01656 644440; www.waterstonehomes.com

Tell us about your business in one sentence? We’re a modern lifestyle store for kids and the home. How did you get into your industry? Having worked in retail most of my career, whilst being a mummy to four kids, coupled with my frustration at having the two youngest (Barnaby & Beaumont) and nowhere to shop in Cardiff for the most stylish, contemporary kids products I saw a gap and filled it! Was this always your dream career? Oh my goodness no, I wanted to be a world class dancer! That said, I did always say when I was a little girl I wanted to own a sweet shop (so I could eat all the sweets!) so not that far off. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? There’s been so many I’m not sure I could name one! Being asked to speak at a women in business event, winning a business award in this, our first year and just getting the doors open would be a few. Who is your biggest career inspiration and why? Other women/mums in business! Any women/mum out there kicking butt and levelling the business playing field is all the inspiration I need. What advice would you give anyone thinking of going into your industry? Be prepared for hard work. Retail is tough and long gone are the days of sitting in your beautiful store waiting for all your customers to arrive. The workload is huge, managing all of your sales channels, website, constant engagement and content uploading is morning, noon and night!

How did you get into your industry? My past was manufacturing, and having a senior role, I always expected to go back to that. However, construction and manufacturing are very transferable skills and the main difference is I now choose to do a more front facing role. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? The highlight has been joining Waterstone Homes without a doubt, coupled with going on to learning in my mature years and graduating from Cardiff Met University this year in Sustainable Leadership. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced? People will always be a challenge because in sales you have to satisfy so many platforms – clientele, internal customers and external customers. However, the biggest challenge was when, literally, overnight everyone’s world changed in house building and construction disintegrated in to dust. This is when I could draw on my experience and was free to be innovative, open-minded and think outside the box. What advice would you give anyone thinking of going into your industry? 2018 is all about learning in a more modern and collaborative way. I would say keep an open mind and think customer but always be be true to yourself and stick to your principles as without them you can’t work to values. What three words describe you? Firm but fair.

Marking 70 years of Porsche at Porsche Centre Cardiff

The young meet the young at heart

Nothing but a number A Cardiff care home hosted a weekly toddler group as part of a fun intergenerational activity this week. Tŷ Llandaff, a private nursing, residential and respite care home in Conway Road, Pontcanna, linked up with the city’s branch of Acorns & Oaks, an organisation who runs pop-up playgroups for care home residents to bring together people of different generations. The Cardiff care home decided to join the scheme after previously staging similar events at

the home whereby the staff brought in their own children to interact with residents which proved very successful. Previous research has shown that when young and old share activities the older generation showed substantial improvements in their mental and physical health. Children also showed benefits including language development and increased confidence. For more: www.tyllandaffcare.com

The art of business Cardiff University School of Medicine has been named Admiral Business of the Year at the Arts & Business Cymru Awards for the innovative way it uses the arts to improve healthcare for people with learning disabilities. Learning-disabled actors from theatre company Hijinx have worked with more than 400 fourth-year medical students on role-play clinical scenarios to address a lack of training in communicating with, and caring for, people with learning disabilities. The partnership also won the Arts, Business & Health Award. The annual Arts & Business Cymru Awards ceremony took place on 25 May at Wales Millennium Centre. The event, now celebrating its 25th anniversary, recognises outstanding commitment to supporting the arts. Dr Robert Colgate, of Cardiff University School of Medicine, said, “We’re thrilled to have won both the Admiral Business of the Year Award and the award for Arts, Business & Health; it’s a huge achievement. The brilliant actors at Hijinx have upskilled and educated our undergraduate students, giving them the tools to improve patient care when

More than 175,000 visitors came to the Volvo Ocean Race village in Cardiff Bay, during the race’s two-week stopover in the city. First Minister Carwyn Jones said, “It was a tremendous fortnight for Cardiff and for Wales in our Year of the Sea. The Volvo Ocean Race team have been hugely impressed with what we can create here, and people have come from around the world to enjoy our renowned hospitality. Once again this demonstrates the special appeal Wales has, and I’m sure we’ll enjoy its legacy for years to come.” “Cardiff has been a tremendous stopover for the Volvo Ocean Race,” said Karin Backlund, executive director of the Volvo Ocean Race. “The public turnout has exceeded all expectations and our corporate guests have enjoyed the best of Welsh hospitality. It’s been a great experience to return the race to its roots in the UK.” The Race Village has christened a brand new event space for Cardiff Bay, as council leader Huw Thomas explained, “The Alexandra Head site has been a magnet for the crowds over 14 days, and with water on both sides and easy accessibility, will I’m sure be used for a variety of events in future. The Capital FM Cardiff Bay Beach Festival is here for the summer holidays, and sailing fans can look forward to the Extreme Sailing Series returning over August Bank Holiday.” Global leading flexible office space specialists, IWG who operate the brands Regus & Spaces – with more than 300 centres in the UK, including Cardiff – was one of the key sponsors for Team Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag, the inaugural Hong Kong entry into the Volvo Ocean Race. For three days during the stopover the firm hosted around 150 commercial property agents and local executives. Having the Volvo Ocean Race here places us on the world sailing map with the likes of Auckland and Cape Town.” “Volvo Cars was delighted that Cardiff featured as one of the stopovers for the 20172018 Volvo Ocean Race,” said Jon Wakefield, UK managing director of Volvo Car UK, “and that we could work with the city to help raise awareness of the damage caused by plastic in the oceans. The event gave us an important platform to demonstrate the important work on ocean health to which we are contributing, both through

the funding of plastic-detecting technologies on the boats themselves, and via sales of the new Volvo V90 Cross Country Volvo Ocean Race Edition – the latter which will see around 300,000 Euros donated to the cause. “The stopover also set the scene for Volvo Cars’ subsequent announcement that it aims for at least 25 per cent of the plastics used in new cars from 2025 to be made from recycled materials.” “We also had the opportunity to further the environmental work with by showcasing a special version of our award-winning V90 Cross Country Volvo Ocean Race edition, a percentage of sales which will contribute directly to helping understand the health of our oceans.” Nick Bice, director of boats and maintenance with Volvo Ocean Race said: “There are good stopovers, and there are great stopovers - and Cardiff is a great stopover.” For more: www.volvooceanrace.com

in the national awards, jamjar won the ‘Best Use of Digital’ category at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR)’s annual Excellence Awards. Beating off strong competition from big name brands, including Facebook, jamjar’s #JoinCwmTaf campaign for Cwm Taf University Health Board was deemed the best in UK. With recruitment of NHS staff a UK-wide problem with health boards competing to attract a limited workforce, jamjar developed an innovative digital campaign to attract doctors to work in the Valleys. The campaign used Cwm Taf ’s greatest ambassadors, its staff, to feature in a series of videos, as

well as a 360-degree video to give potential new recruits the chance to get a glimpse of what the health board has to offer. Judges praised the campaign for its research and outcomes, deeming it ‘best practice’, a ‘textbook example’ and a ‘stand-out winner’. Managing director of jamjar Lyndsey Jenkins, said, “This is a campaign that we’re particularly proud of at jamjar so to get national recognition from our industry peers is all the more pleasing. Zoe Westerman, a director of Cyclone24, the UK’s only 24-hour track cycling team challenge event series, has been named in Cycling UK’s 100 Women in Cycling 2018, which recognises and celebrates inspirational women who are encouraging others to take part in the sport. So far, more than 500 people have tried out track cycling thanks to Zoe, and she’s provided a platform that’s raised more than £250,000 for charity. Alongside all of this, Zoe has found time to set up a corporate cycle network in Cardiff, where she hosts regular free to attend group rides for business people from across the city as an alternative form of networking and a way of encouraging people to cycle Zoe said, “Cycling UK’s 100 Women in Cycling is an important platform for recognising the incredible women working hard and making a significant impact within the typically male dominated sectors of cycling. e spent some time getting to know Mel and Anne-Marie Jehu when they showed us around their beautiful Waterstone home, one with the best sea views we’ve ever seen, and one overlooking a beautiful city park. We met their respective dogs and below you’ll see that we picked their brains on everything from favourite holiday destinations to what it feels like to be part of an 85-year-old family business.

construction company down to brothers Marc and Simon Jehu. Anne-Marie, Simon’s wife of 18 years, works for the firm and Mel and Marc’s children, Beth, 24, and Will, 20, are also keeping it in the family as they both work for the firm. Award winning Waterstone Homes was established in 2003 and builds small collections of luxury homes in choice locations across South Wales. Both brothers’ families have set up homes in Waterstone homes and having been to both, it’s easy to see why.

Keeping it in the family The Jehu Group was established in Ogmore Vale, Bridgend by Jack Jehu in the 1930s, who then handed over the reins to his son Rene, and subsequently Rene handed the thriving

the balcony, overlooking Ogmore beach and across to Weston-super-Mare. Why did you move from the house that Marc built? It wasn’t an easy decision, because our family home was near perfect, but three things stood out for us in making our decision to purchase our forever home; we’ve always loved Ogmoreby-Sea, we’d always wanted to wake up and see the sea and Marc’s parents had not long ago bought a Waterstone home themselves in The Barns, St Brides and seeing that clinched it for us. Even if I say so myself, they are incredibly well built and the spec is tremendous. Our house is pretty much standard spec, I just chose to have less windows and have more kitchen units, because I love cooking and entertaining.

Mel Jehu

Tell us about your style and your favourite room? It’s the open plan living for sure. It’s surprising that the space, even though it’s really big, has defined areas and the living area still feels quite cosy when we’re sat watching telly. I see this look at the moment as phase one, I had great help from the Watertsone Homes team and Sunrise Interiors. I am very pleased with all the furniture, most of which was supplied by Designer Sofas Direct Brynmenyn, a local business that is run by friends and family. But I’m looking forward to phase two. I’m taking a little break from it all at the moment, getting the feel for it as a home and then I’ll be putting more of my stamp on the house with more furniture and paintings.

ANNE-MARIE Anne-Marie, 42, and the family have lived in their five bed, three bath, four-storey Palace Gardens home in the leafy suburb of Pontcanna for four years. The house is on an exclusive development of only eight homes built on an old bowling green, perfectly situated overlooking Thompsons Park. Why did you move from the country to the city? We’d lived in Colwinston, Vale of Glamorgan for 11 years, it’s where we raised our children Harri 20, Samson 16 and Sophia 14, we had

Anne-Marie Jehu

views across the Bristol Channel, it really was a fabulous home. But Simon and I found ourselves spending much of our time hanging around Cardiff waiting for one of our three children participating in after school activities and we figured it was a situation that would continue for many years to come, so we bit the bullet and chose a ‘corner plot’ overlooking Thompsons Park and we’re really happy. We never thought we’d move from the country to the city, but we are loving it. We’ve got uninterrupted park views, so we are very lucky to get to see plenty of greenery. I have to praise Sunrise Interiors too, they are the interior designers of choice for Waterstone Homes and, as it’s not my forte, they made it really easy for me, giving me plenty of options to choose from for each element. What’s your favourite room in the house? If I am allowed to choose my view into the park, I’d choose that. I think of it as an extension of my home, as I can view it from my interior balcony on the landing area, overlooking the double height windows and also my roof window in our master bedroom – so by proxy they become my favourite rooms. Me and the dogs are either in the park or sat looking at it. We asked both Mel and Anne-Marie what it’s like to be a part of a family business...

Anne-Marie said, “I’m very proud to be working for a company that’s been passed down from generation to generation.” Mel said, “It means so much to us as a family that Beth and Will are working with Marc, it really is in the blood. The doll’s house that Beth’s great grandfather, Jack Jehu built is such a lovely way to remind us of the history, as he built that when she was born, calling it Ogmore House, a name that will stay with us, so this location really is in our blood too.” n

Victoria Road Could this be one of the finest residences in Penarth? And could it soon be your new home? By Charlie Rose 94 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

T

here’s a myriad of reasons why Penarth is regularly voted one of the most desirable places to live in Wales – plenty of independent shops and restaurants, good schools, excellent transport links, not to mention the fact that it’s on a particularly picturesque stretch of coastline with an utterly delightful newly restored pier. Equally, there’s a myriad of reasons why this home on Victoria Road in the town is sure to get your vote as somewhere you would most like to live. Let’s start with the many original and characterful features in this imposing 1920s property. There’s the quarry tiles that begin in the storm porch at the front door and lead into the entrance hall, the feature fireplaces in the dining room and living room, not to mention the wood panelling in the hall, dining room and magnificent drawing room which, just by the way, also has plate racks for displaying your antique china and a window seat from which you can sit and gaze over the garden. It’s not style over substance though, far from it. This home is more than well-equipped for modern living. The kitchen is a fabulous space, with plenty of high quality storage units and granite work tops, as well as lots of room for a dinner table for casual family suppers. The original walk-in pantry is still in existence, complete with cold slab, and pretty sizeable it is too – there’ll be no shortage of space for storing your weekly shop – and there’s a useful utility room.

To the first floor there’s four bedrooms with, as you might expect in a home of this calibre, a rather special master with a bay window overlooking the back garden and a luxurious en suite bathroom with roll-top bath, shower and double basins. There’s a good sized family bathroom to be found on this floor as well. That’s not the end of the accommodation however, a third floor awaits. It’s currently laid out as two further bedrooms (one with en suite shower room) but with so much space to play with here, they could become anything you wish – a study, a gym, games room, bar… the world (or this home at least) is very much your oyster. It’s hard to imagine that there’s any more reasons needed to persuade you of the merits of this home, but let’s step outside anyway. At the front is a large driveway with attractive shrub borders and plenty of space for cars for you the rest of the family and everyone else who is bound to want to visit. There’s a garage too, with roof storage space (always handy) and an inspection pit in case you fancy a bit of mechanical tinkering. Out the back is a large, beautifully maintained lawn, just crying out to host an elegant garden party, and a raised paved terrace with veranda that’s reached via the dining room, ideal for al fresco dining. At the end of the garden is a summer house for peaceful moments (perhaps somewhere to retreat with a book or copy of Cardiff Life or even for some yoga practice? ) surrounded by pretty plants. Go on, cast your vote, and make this Victorian Road house, your new home. n

“It’s a wonderful place to live and it’s got a great caring community”

Nicola Spragg The co-owner of Cardiff Windows and Doors talks tea, Tenby and touring in a camper van Nicola and her husband John own and run Cardiff Windows and Doors. When she’s not doing that though, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, driving around in her VW camper van and going to concerts.

Where in Cardiff do you live and what makes it special? I live in Heath – it’s a wonderful place to live and it’s got a great caring community. It’s also near some beautiful parks and so convenient to the city centre and it’s also only five minutes to the office which is very handy! What has been the highlight of your career so far? Gosh, there have been so many but the one that stands out the most has to be setting up a business with my husband. Not

98 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

only that, but going into a male-dominated window and door industry. It’s amazing how much I’ve learnt in eight years! What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you? Slipping over during a health and safety inspection, ouch! No harm done though, and the inspector and I were in stitches. (Not literally, thankfully!) Who would you invite to your dream dinner party? Apart from my husband of course, probably The Beatles. When did you last cry, and why? Last week, thinking about my beautiful brother who died a few years ago.

Who would play you in a film about your life? Sheridan Smith, she’d get my funny, cheeky and serious side. What job would you be terrible at? IT, IT and IT all the way! As soon as there is an IT issue, I’m shouting for help. What’s on your bookshelf at the moment? Mostly travel books and maps. I love touring the UK and have just got back from Ireland. It was fabulous so I may go back and tour in my van. Who’s your celebrity crush? Gerard Butler. What’s your guiltiest pleasure? Don’t tell anyone, but I do love Coronation Street. Which piece of music would you put on at the end of a trying day? Happy by Pharrell Williams or Hey Ya! by Outkast. What’s your favourite piece of clothing? It has to be my Berghaus coat. I’ve had it for 20 years and it’s still going strong. If you have a spare five minutes in the day, what are you likely to fill it with? A nice cup of tea.

What’s your earliest childhood memory? Having fun on the beach with my whole family in Tenby. We used to stay at Kiln Park every year and it was fantastic. What are your favourite places to eat and drink in Cardiff? I like to eat at Café Citta, Cote, Pierres, Valentinos,Panama Tandoori and Crispy Duck. If I’m going our for a drink I’ll head to the City Arms, Old Arcade or The Duke of Wellington. I do love all the older establishments of Cardiff. Oh, and I do like Gin and Juice too. Tell us about a secret/ underrated Cardiff spot we might not be aware of… The Taff Trail walk from Heath into town or the Bay is lovely. It takes an hour but is so much nicer than taking the bus We’d better let you get on…. what are you doing as soon as you’ve done this? I’m actually off to Marlow, I had my 50th this year and had some wonderful gifts including a lunch voucher at the Hand and Flowers, so I hope Tom Kerridge is cooking! n
