sk anyone to name some of their favourite things about Cardiff, and the old arcades will, almost without fail, come somewhere near the top of
the list. Perhaps, then, it shouldn’t be surprising that so many people voted for their favourite arcade shop, bar or restaurant in FOR Cardiff’s campaign to position Cardiff as the City of Arcades. In fact, somewhere in excess of 9,500 of us cast our vote – far more than the organisers had hoped for. It really is heartening to see people really getting behind the independent retailers in this way. Because, it is places like the arcades, and the people working within them, that really give Cardiff its character and make it so unique and special. But just because the votes have now all been cast and counted, and the winners announced (see page 40) it shouldn’t be the end. Let’s hope that the campaign serves as a reminder of how important it is to support the shops we love, and which play such an important part in the city.

Everybody’s talking about…
Final whistle for Sam Cardiff Blues, Wales and British and Irish Lion flanker, Sam Warburton, has called timed on his illustrious rugby career. Capped 74 times by Wales and a further five by the British & Irish Lions, the former Whitchurch school boy led his country for a record 49 times, but announced his retirement on 18 July after struggling to recover from neck and knee surgery. Sam said, “Unfortunately, after a long period of rest and rehabilitation the decision to retire from rugby has been made with my health and wellbeing as a priority as my body is unable to give me back what I had hope for on my return to training. “I cannot thank the Welsh Rugby Union and Cardiff Blues enough, who have gone beyond the call of duty,

in providing the support I received to help me get back on the field, for which I will be forever grateful. “Since I first played aged 10 at Llanishen Fach Primary School, then Whitchurch High School and Rhiwbina Juniors RFC, I always dreamed of playing for my hometown club the Cardiff Blues, Wales and the British and Irish Lions. To look back on my career, I’m extremely proud of what I managed to achieve.” Sam will go down in history as the most successful British & Irish Lions captains of all time. Last year he became only the second man to captain the Lions on two tours as he led the famous touring team to New Zealand, repeating the honour he first undertook in 2013 in Australia. Just days before announcing his retirement Sam Warburton, along with Paralympian Nathan Stephens, was among those honoured with fellowships by Cardiff Metropolitan University. On accepting his accolade, Sam said, “It’s a fantastic honour to be awarded an honorary fellowship from Cardiff Metropolitan University. To be recognised by such a great university with a fantastic reputation is flattering.” Nathan Stephens added, “It is extremely overwhelming and a great honour to be awarded with an Honorary Fellowship from Cardiff Met. “Cardiff Met has been a huge part of my sporting journey, allowing me to study and train at the same time. “I am now working closely with the university to provide the same opportunities for the future generations of para athletes.” Others to be honoured by the university included Professor Mabel Opanda Imbuga, Karen Betts, John Foster Thomas, May Faisal El-Khalil, Bethan Gray, and Alison Johns. Best foot forward for Ian Warner
The annual Kidney Wales Cardiff 10K and 2K family fun run takes place on 2 September, and there’s still time to sign up. This year, the race will see a new route through the city centre, with around 10,000 people expected to take part – making it the biggest race yet. Among those already signed up is living donor Ian Warner. After making the brave decision to donate a kidney to a relative in need, Ian began fundraising for Kidney Wales when he chose to enter the Cardiff 10K as part of his post-operation journey back to fitness. With more than 20 Cardiff 10Ks under his belt, Ian thought he had hung up his running shoes for good when he crossed the finishing line of the event in 2016.
However, a prostate cancer diagnosis has seen the 60-year-old once again target the Nation Radio 10K as part of a rehabilitation programme to improve his fitness. On his fundraising activities and efforts to keep fit, Ian said, “My experience as a donor brought home how important your kidneys are and how much, I think it is fair to say, people take them for granted. “I ran my last Cardiff 10K two years ago, and that was supposed to be it. However, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer and having the prostate removed, I needed to keep fit, therefore here we are! So, why not take the opportunity to raise funds for Kidney Wales once again?” To sign up, visit www.cardiff10k.cymru

Renowned for its intense racing, the adrenaline-fuelled Extreme Sailing Series™ returns to Cardiff Bay for the seventh consecutive year over the August bank holiday. The UK stop on the action-packed global circuit, which spans the Middle East, Europe and the Americas, will play host to a fleet of elite-level international sailing teams. South Wales’ First Community Fridge is proving so popular that more volunteers are needed to help collect and manage the stock at the Cathays Community Centre. The scheme was started at the beginning of June by Cowbridge Food and Drink Festival and FIZZI Action to allow left over food from people’s homes, restaurants, café, shops and businesses, to be shared between people in a community. Seth Oliver, director of FIZZI Action said, “FIZZI has been honoured to be able to deliver South Wales’ First Community Fridge working with Cowbridge Food & Drink Festival. And thanks to the National Lottery Awards for All for making it possible. We’ve had so many people and organisations who want to support this project and we need more volunteers spending an hour or so of their time each week helping to collect or monitor the food stock. Ffotogallery’s new exhibition, Ffotoview, is a celebration of Welsh and Wales-based photographic talent, including work from 12 selected artists on www.ffotoview.org, an online calendar unveiling a new featured artist each month. From eco-villages in West Wales to empowering images of Muslim women, the landscapes and communities of the south Wales’ valleys to the experiences of refugees and asylum seekers in Cardiff, Ffotoview explores different perspectives on life in contemporary Wales and various approaches to photography in a digital age. It is part of 40:40 Vision, a year long programme of exhibitions, events and projects marking Ffotogallery’s 40th anniversary and is being held in the space being developed into its new city centre venue. A centre of excellence The Wales Millennium Centre is one of the leading lights of Cardiff’s arts scene. Senior producer at the Centre, Sarah Leigh, takes a look back at some of this year’s highlights so far and looks ahead at what’s to come
T
here is a real buzz behind the scenes at Wales Millennium Centre and it’s already been a very busy and exciting year for us. We’re still feeling the excitement of Festival of Voice 2018 which saw amazing performances from world-renowned artists (including Patti Smith, Charlotte Church, Camille O’Sullivan, Gruff Rhys, Fatoumata Diawara, Tank and The Bangas, Billy Bragg and many more) and featured collaborations and co-productions with intriguing Welsh artists making work in different genres – from theatre to digital including Gagglebabble, 4PI Productions, August 012, Katell Keineg, Gwenno and Carys Eleri. After Festival of Voice we moved swiftly on to preparing Carys’ show Lovecraft (Not the Sex Shop in Cardiff), which premiered at the festival, to go on to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August. Carys performs a one-woman, science, comedy, music show using anecdotes from her own experience, individual style and a splash of neuroscience. She explores love and loneliness in our contemporary world, moving you to tears and laughter. If you haven’t seen this show yet, why not use this as an excuse to visit the glorious
city of Edinburgh and help Carys through the hiraeth she will be feeling being away from Cardiff for the month? In fact, make a weekend of it and see some entertaining work from other brilliant Welsh companies, who are all performing at the same venue – the multi-arts complex Summerhall renowned for hosting some of the most exciting companies in Edinburgh. Here are a few I’ve got my eye on…. Alan Harris’ Sugar Baby produced by Wales’ award-winning theatre company Dirty Protest, is back having received rave reviews at last year’s fringe and touring Germany, this one-man comedy set in Cardiff is at Roundabout @ Summerhall. You can also see Sherman Theatre’s production of intriguing two-hander Tremor in which an estranged couple reunite four years after their split … and our resident company Hijinx, in association with Spymonkey, take you to 17th century Paris where impotence is illegal in their new production aptly named The Flop. We are also busy preparing for our second season of Performances for the Curious, which starts this autumn at the Centre. The season returns to our Weston Studio and ffresh cabaret bar filled with exciting, compelling and critically-lauded new works from the

very best in contemporary theatre and performance. We kick off in November with the premiere of local bilingual company Neontopia’s new production Tuck designed specifically for ffresh and focusing on the contemporary Cardiff drag community. In the Weston, Leeway Productions premiere their ground-breaking production of Jason Robert Brown’s international musical hit The Last Five Years where the emotionally powerful score is coupled with sign language and beautiful movement by award-winning deaf choreographer Mark Smith. Freshfaced gender warriors Milk Present step over the border to present Bullish, a negotiation of ancient and new territories in transmasculine gender and identity through the story of the Minotaur coupled with Humanequin a production created with local young trans people and students from Radyr Comprehensive School. In ffresh we have a mixture of jazz, musical theatre, comedy, drag, circus and more highlights include the return of Hello Cabaret, Mary Bijou and local comedian Leroy Britto. From further afield, the band ARJUN travel all the way from New York, and I’m also looking forward to The Nat King Cole Story performed by acclaimed Jazz vocalist Atila as well as Mal Pope’s Cappuccino Girls. Check out international opera and lycra-loving cabaret sensation Le Gateau Chocolat as he returns to the Centre, after his Festival of Voice debut, with his truly unique show, Icons, which walks the tightrope between his public and private personas. Accompanied by a live band Gateau unashamedly weaves through an eclectic mix of music; pop, opera, rock; Kate Bush, Whitney, Meatloaf, Pavarotti . . . expect sequins, glitter and fabulous hair. In terms of Welsh language offerings, we’ve got hilarious Welsh cabaret Cabarela and bilingual drag superstar Connie Orff in ffresh in December. The whole Centre will be full of activities and festive atmosphere in the lead up to Christmas, perfect for a festive family day out. For those looking to share the experience of theatre with younger ones, you can’t go wrong with Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical – an extraordinary production from the RSC with witty lyrics by Tim Minchin, which will be here at Wales Millennium Centre for the first time between 4 December and 12 January. Alternatively, for a more intimate but equally magical treat during the holidays, you can see Le Gateau Chocolat’s Duckie – a celebratory reimagining of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling, from 20–31 December. n www.wmc.org.uk

There ain’t no pastry like a Danish pastry
The wheels on the bus...
It’s always going to be hard to fit Cardiff’s best bits into just one day, but we’ll give it a go... 8.30am: It’s a bit of an early start, but hey, there’s lots to do! Start the day in Pontcanna with a spot of breakfast at KIN+ILK or maybe do it Danish style at Brød. Have a stroll around the neighbourhood before heading back through the park to Cardiff Castle. 10am: After a quick photo of the castle jump on the Hop-On, Hop-Off Cardiff Sightseeing Bus. It might seem like a bit of a cliché, but actually it’s a great way of getting about and finding out some fun facts about the city that you (let alone your guests) probably never knew. Cardiff Castle is the first stop and it leaves every 30 minutes so if you miss one, another will be along shortly. There’s 11 stops in all, and the whole circuit takes around 55 minutes.
11am: Head to the Lookout Café at the World of Boats (just past the Doctor Who Experience building) where you can have a coffee while enjoying some of the best views of Cardiff Bay.
1.30pm: Go for lunch in one of the many independent cafes in the old arcades. We’d suggest Madame Fromage in the Castle Arcade for its dazzling array of cheeses and Welsh speciality dishes.
11.45am: Walk back around the Bay, pausing for obligatory photographs at the Wales Millennium Centre, the Senedd, and the Welsh carousel. Take a detour into Mermaid Quay and pick up some Welsh cakes from Fabulous Welsh Cakes.
2.30pm: Spend the afternoon shopping in the arcades.
12.30pm: Pay a visit to Craft in the Bay to grab an example of some gorgeous Welsh craftsmanship as a souvenir, then hop back on the bus (Craft in the Bay is stop 8). It will take you down Lloyd George Avenue to St Mary’s Street and then to the final stop on the circuit – the Principality Stadium.
5.30pm: Time for a cheeky cocktail or two at Gin & Juice in High Street Arcade. The gin menu is immense, so ask the friendly bar staff for their recommendations. 7pm: Dinner at Park House restaurant (see page 58 for more). Much of the menu is locally sourced, and it’s presented with French flair. Make the most of the award-winning wine list by enlisting the help of the sommelier. All timings are approximate!

10.40am: Get off at stop number four – the Norwegian Church and pop in for a mooch around the arts centre.

Cardiff – The City of Arcades When FOR Cardiff launched the City of Arcades campaign last month, they invited locals to join them in celebrating Cardiff’s historic arcades which house more than 100 independent businesses.
T
he seven Edwardian and Victorian arcades in Cardiff city centre have attracted shoppers for more than a century, with locals and visitors alike amazed by the diversity on offer within their walls. They truly are the jewel within Cardiff’s crown. As part of the FOR Cardiff’s City of Arcades campaign fans of the arcades shared their memories, stories and photos on social media; from one blushing bride-to-be who was so impressed with the service received from small jewellers S C Mitchell, in the Castle Arcade, that she is ordering her wedding rings from them too; to the Canadian tourists visiting Cardiff and the arcades for the first time, amazed by the choice and hospitality on offer. People were also asked to vote for their favourite shop, café, bar barber shop or hotel within the arcades. Choosing favourites was always going to be hard, but droves of people responded, with 9,500 votes cast in a little

The resulting top 10 reflects the diverse range of businesses found in the arcades and the sheer volume of votes demonstrates how much the people of Cardiff, appreciate the Arcades and the independents they house. Adrian Field, Executive Director of FOR Cardiff who were behind the campaign, said: “We created this campaign to put Cardiff firmly on the independent shopping map and encourage more people to explore this part of the city. “We want to say a huge well done to everyone who made the list and a big thank you to everyone that took the time to vote. You have helped us identify the businesses and the people behind them to feature in our advertising campaign to target shoppers in
Bristol and Bath.” The £75k advertising campaign will roll out in September across billboards, bus rears, digital screens and online advertising. Waterloo Tea, established in 2008, has become something of a Cardiff institution, with five tea houses across Cardiff and Penarth, and a sixth due to open soon in the city centre. The Wyndham Arcade branch opened in 2014, serving a range of more than 60 teas sourced from India, China, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Japan, as well as coffees and freshly prepared food. The tea house also doubles as a shop, selling tea and coffee equipment for home use and supplying tea to several of the big hotels and brands across the city and Europe. Looking for something different to do? The team host supper clubs and private events with a bespoke speciality menus. Professional skateboarder, MTV star, endurance runner and entrepreneur Matthew Pritchard owns Sleep When You’re Dead Tattoo and Barber Shop (known as SWYD) and has done it all. Filming Dirty Sanchez, Matthew travelled the world visiting tattoo parlours and barber shops across the globe and took inspiration from those places when he realised his dream and set up SWYD. “I’m really proud and honoured that Sleep When You’re Dead has been included in the City of Arcades Top 10, thanks to my amazing team and the hard work they put in,” says Matthew. “Since the campaign started, we’ve had some of our busiest weekends and we’d like to thank FOR Cardiff for starting this. “We opened on St David’s Day, a great day to start a business in Wales,” says Ross Jones of the eponymous Jones the Barber. Ross began barbering in 2013, opening his first shop in the Castle Emporium in 2015, before moving over to the Castle Arcade in 2017. They specialise in traditional barbering techniques and hot towel shaves, with both walk-ins and appointments available. Alongside the services you would expect, Ross has branched out and developed his own product range called “Jones and Sons”, including pomades, putties and waxes to keep your style sharp between visits. “My sons are very involved in the products and love testing things out,” says Ross, “They know exactly what they like and don’t like, and make sure to tell me what they think works!” “The City of Arcades campaign has been great at showcasing what Cardiff is best at. When you come to the arcades you get to meet the real Cardiff, a great community of really special people. It’s fantastic to be included in the Top 10 stores”

Now entering its 23rd year, The Pen and Paper is a staple for artists and stationery lovers across the region and beyond, stocking everything from pens, pencils, paints and art supplies through to gift stationery. With nearly 40,000 lines in stock, the shop offers a far wider selection of items than you’d normally find on the high street. Alongside the art supplies and stationery, the store you will find the largest range of cards made in Wales, including those in the Welsh language, in Cardiff and a selection of jigsaw puzzles. “We’re really pleased to be in the City of Arcades Top 10,” says Wendy Bottrill who owns the store with husband Philip, “Visitors to the city love to explore and are always looking for something unique and different, but don’t always know what stores are here. I hope this campaign shows what great, independent shopping is available in our arcades.”

Run by mother and son team Spencer John and Laurie Hubball, Simply V was born in 2013 out of a desire to share their cakes with the world. Having raised her family as vegetarians, Laurie and Spencer have been vegan for around 13 years and wanted to share their passion for the food they loved. After running a few pop-ups at local events, including Cardiff’s Vegetarian Festival, the pair were inspired by the vegan businesses they saw in cities such as London, Brighton, Berlin and New York. They say that seeing the variety available for vegans elsewhere was eye opening, making them think, “Wow! Cardiff needs something like this!” As well as store cupboard basics, Simply V also stocks ready-meals, snacks and sweets – with everything from pizzas and pulled jackfruit to fresh cakes and chocolate available in store. “The campaign has already had an impact on the store. Our customers have really got behind the City of Arcades project,” says Spencer, “They wanted to share our story and it was really humbling to find out we made it into the Top 10.”

Working from her store in Duke Street Arcade, it is hard to believe Jian Chen only started painting in 2012. After posting photos of her work online, she quickly gained a cult following, with people clamouring to buy her unique and vibrant artwork. She spotted the potential of the arcade space and knew it would be the perfect location for her store. Jian specialises in water colours, with a small amount of work created in oils and acrylics, sometimes completing up to five new pieces in a week. As well as her original artworks, on display in her gallery on the basement level, she also prints her work onto everything from t-shirts and tote bags to keyrings and coasters. For a new business, like Jian’s, the campaign has really helped to spread the word about her art. “The City of Arcades campaign has really exposed my artwork to a new and wider audience,” she says. “I think it’s helped the arcades, showing people all the unique things, they can find if they just explore a little.”

When Sobeys Vintage Clothing was looking to open its first store in Wales in 2016, there was no question about where the location should be, owner Andy Evans had fond memories of shopping in the arcades and could think of no better location that the Royal Arcade. Specialising in vintage, re-worked and vintage inspired items, Sobeys’ love of clothes is apparent. From 60s inspired paisley shirts, through to corduroy dungaree dresses and vintage Levi’s jeans, they specialise in good quality clothing that is kept on-trend through weekly deliveries. Andy says, “We try to be a store where if you are on your second visit you will probably be on first name terms with the people who work there.” “We’re excited to be part of the Top 10,” says store manager, Kristy Cromwell. “The campaign has really helped us engage with our customers and it’s been great hearing what they like about us and what makes us unique.”

Since it was first opened by Henry Spiller in 1894, generations of Cardiff’s music lovers have fallen under the spell of local record shop, Spillers. Originally located in the original Queens Arcade, Spiller sold recordings on wax cylinders, examples of which are still in the store today, as well as gramophones and various musical instruments. The creation of Record Store Day over a decade ago, along with the explosion in vinyl record sales, has rekindled the enthusiasm for independent music stores, “It’s huge!” exclaims owner Ashli Todd. “This year we had the huge honour of Lauren Laverne broadcasting her Friday morning show for BBC 6 Music live from the shop, which is the most surreal thing I can remember ever happening in the store in my time here.” “It’s often reported how difficult it is trading on the high street at the moment, but the arcades are full of independent businesses who are really passionate about what they do. It’s great to be featured in the top 10 and I hope this campaign has piqued people’s interest to come and explore and see what we have to offer.”

University friends Michelle, Ian and Steve were always passionate about games and saw a gap in the market for something different, so they opened Rules of Play back in 2011. As the interest in board games has grown, so to has the store, moving to its current base in Castle Arcade from a smaller site in the same location. New games are available weekly, and the store prides itself on being able to source the latest must-haves from across Europe and beyond. Along with the day job, the team also run weekly games nights across Cardiff and have also hosted three International TapleTop Days, the last of which saw more than 400 guests take part – the largest event of its kind in the city. Manager Dyfed Bowen says, “We pride ourselves on providing a friendly and welcoming atmosphere so that you can come in feeling comfortable and leave feeling happy! That’s why we’re happy to be included in the City of Arcades Top 10.”

Family-run business, The Card Shop, Cardiff, has seen many changes to Dominons Arcade over the years. Alison Manship and husband Chris took over the business from Alison’s parents who opened the store in 198 0. As well as cards, the store also sells gifts bags, novelty balloons and a range of Welsh cards and gifts designed by local artists. “When the store opened, there were very few places in the city centre to buy quality gift cards,” says Chris, “We pride ourselves on giving a personal experience and have stocking something that is unusual or different.” “People love the arcades,” says Chris, “It’s amazing to be included in the Top 10 stores. The campaign has been great for highlighting the fantastic businesses out there and we’re keen to keep the momentum going.”

As I stood in the shower on the morning of my pedicure appointment, looking at my feet, I couldn’t help feeling a pang of guilt about what I was about to inflict on my poor unsuspecting therapist. My tootsies have not made the transition from the soft sheepskin boots and comfy trainers of winter into summer’s strappy sandals well. And, as a result, my feet are covered almost from heel-to-toe with blisters in various stages of the healing process. Coupled with the fact that my propensity to wander around the garden barefoot had lead to patches of hard, leathery skin, and a certain degree of ingrained dirt that no amount of scrubbing and pumicing seemed able to remove, it’s fair to say that my feet were far from pleasant. I mean, they were basically Hobbit feet decorated with some very badly applied blue nail varnish. So, then, the very first thing that I did when I arrived for my treatment at Goji was to apologise to my therapist Tracy, who was the unlucky soul who would be treating my soles. Apparently, I’m not the only person who is ashamed of their feet – nearly everyone apologises, she tells me. But, I’m still pretty sure that mine have got to be some of the worst examples out there right now. Or were. Because in the 45 minutes that I spent enjoying the Goji signature pedicure, a fairly miraculous transformation took place. If Tracy was anywhere near as repulsed by my feet as, by rights, I felt she ought to be

she didn’t show it. She didn’t even chastise me when (slightly mortifyingly) removing the layer of blue paint revealed an even older, even more chipped layer of orange which clearly I’d lacked the motivation and/or time to remove before sloshing on another layer. There was soaking, scrubbing, trimming and some fairly heavy-duty filing (which I swear must have removed enough of the hard, dead skin to make me drop a couple of pounds), before my feet were covered in hot paraffin wax and then wrapped in foil. The paraffin wax nourishes and softens the skin, and while it was taking effect I was treated to a relaxing hand and arm massage. I was worried that having my feet encased in something so warm on such a hot day might be slightly uncomfortable, but actually it was very soothing and when the wax peeled off my feet felt wonderful. The finishing touch was an application of Zoya varnish. There were lots of colours to use from, but in the end I plumped for a neutral shade, with a hint of sparkle from the new bridal collection, which Tracy said would catch the sun beautifully. By the end, my feet were almost completely unrecognisable from the unloved appendages that had walked in there, and I’ve vowed to take better care of them in future. Charlie Brooker once wrote that visiting the barber is made up of two of the things he hates most – looking at yourself in a mirror and making smalltalk. Throw in the dread of replying to the opening question of “what would you like done with it?” when your hair has a thick wave that can only be managed rather than styled and it’s a good summary of why getting a haircut is generally something I view as an occasional necessity rather than a treat. I just want a barber who can look at my hair and suggest the best way of not only making it presentable but also give it a bit of care and attention. If they can do that while I have a coffee or beer, even better. Goji ticked all of the boxes. There’s a floor dedicated to men’s treatments, with its own specialist staff, and a fridge full of beverages that you can help yourself to while you wait for an appointment. My barber, Gemma, was excellent throughout, first talking me through what she would do to tame the unruly mop and then taking her time over the cut. None of your ten-minute clippers and flash of scissors here – Gemma was meticulous and worked with the wave, thinning out the thick hair on top and blending it into the tapered sides and back. It looked great at the time and, a couple of weeks on, the cut is growing out well, holding its style

with minimum maintenance on my part. Since I was in for “The Full Goji” my haircut was followed by a cut-throat shave. I’ve had this done twice in my life. The firsttime, in a proper old-school Italian/American barber in New Jersey, was a real treat. The second time however, in London a few years ago, was a pretty much unmitigated disaster, as the blood pouring from my sensitive skin led to the inexperienced barber abandoning the shave midway through and I was left to try to finish off the job with my girlfriend’s razor when we got back to our hotel. Not ideal. No such problems this time, thankfully. Gemma, noting my warning about sensitive skin, again took her time and made it the enjoyable experience a close shave should be. Indeed, the atmosphere was relaxed throughout, thanks mainly to my confidence that Gemma knew exactly what she was doing both with the scissors and the blade. Even the smalltalk was good and, after such a skilled cut and shave, I didn’t hate looking in the mirror either! Street eats A street food festival is coming to Sophia Gardens every weekend from 17 August – 9 September. The Summer Feastival will run every Friday evening, all day Saturday and until 8pm on Sunday for four weeks, and each weekend will feature a changing line-up of different street food traders from across Wales and the South West. Emma Dance discovers that small really can be beautiful at Buffalo
I
love eating out. Like, really properly love it. Don’t get me wrong, I like cooking too, but as the sole chef (and food shopper) in our household having someone else take responsibility for the whole food journey from buying the ingredients to getting them to my plate, is a genuine treat. My one problem with the experience, however, is the whole decision making thing. Because, there’s usually a whole bunch of stuff that looks completely delicious and I live in fear of making the wrong choice and having severe pangs of food envy when I see other people’s dishes paraded out from the kitchen. And of course, there’s the other issue, which is that I’m not a big fan of sharing my food. I’m very much a kind of “if you wanted chips you should have ordered them” type of girl, and woe betide you if your fork

starts wending its way towards my plate without express permission. So, then, Buffalo’s sharing plates menu is absolutely ideal. Because not only do I not have to nail my colours to the mast and choose just one thing, but because they’re basically designed for sharing and the ordering is very much a collaborative decision, fortunately for my dining companion, I don’t have the same ferocious possessiveness over the food. While we wait, I see some burgers being delivered to neighbouring tables and they look so good I begin to wonder if I’d made the right choice by shunning the fullsized plates. When our plates start to arrive though any doubts are instantly quashed. We’ve selected ourselves a veritable feast of six dishes (basically most of the menu) and everything looks very vibrant and fresh.

There’s an enormous bowl full of hummus garnished with za’atar, with a pile of warm pitta bread alongside, which is divine in its simplicity, and a tomato and cucumber salad with pomegranate molasses, sumac and mint which brings a light zingy freshness to the table. Chargrilled sweetcorn, a perfectly wonderful thing on its own, is made into something really rather special thanks to the addition of a spicy herb butter (apparently the chef was inspired by the beach barbecues of Bali.) We devour it greedily, rivulets of the butter running down our arms. Elegant it is not, but there’s something about the food that’s so demandingly tactile that makes it even more satisfying. Halloumi fries have that trademark squeakiness between the teeth, and that slightly addictiveness saltiness that keeps us coming back for more. There’s a pile of buttermilk chicken, perfectly crisp and golden, with the meat inside still moist, and sweet, sticky barbecue ribs, with meat that falls from the bone with the very minimum of effort. By the time we’ve finished the table is a mess and we’re a mess, our hands and lips completely covered with a delicious medley of sauces and seasonings from all our foodie conquests. But, you know what, we were very happy. Turns out that, on occasion, maybe I’m OK with the food sharing thing. n

he couple first met in 1989 and married in 1999 so next year is their 20th wedding anniversary! Ann gave us a call as she wanted to talk about a potential project, knocking down a kitchen wall and opening up the space in a more social way for her friends and family. After setting up an appointment, we sat with an in her home for an hour or so. We usually only stay 30 minutes unless the consultation is to be longer at the customer’s request. We spoke with our builder and made Ann feel at ease with the project. We talked her through every step of the way. We could order and deliver the bi-folds within three working days so Ann was very pleased not to be left with a gaping hole at the side of her house for several weeks. Working closely with the builder we had the doors on standby. The next thing the doors were in. Ann was so pleased she also ordered box sash windows, casement windows and a new front door!

t’s been a while since Andrew Frost was in a professional kitchen in his native Wales. He’s spent most of the last 10 years or so in Paris (with a London interlude as part of the opening team at the now-famed Petrus, and a stint on a fine dining cruise ship) cooking off his derrière at some of the city’s finest restaurants. Now, though, he’s back, heading up the kitchen at the Park House restaurant, and determined to make Cardiff a proper foodie hotspot. “It’s like coming home,” says Andrew. “My parents were in Cardiff, I met my wife in Cardiff, I even did my apprenticeship in the St David’s Hotel back in 1999 so I’ve got fond memories of this place.” It wasn’t the memories that prompted his return, though, rather a desire to get the wider world to take Wales seriously as a gastronomic destination. “I suppose you could say it was pride that brought me back,” he says. “I watched the Great British Menu and I saw the Welsh chefs and to be honest I just didn’t think they were a particularly good representation of the country. “I thought I’d have a look at Cardiff and see what it was about and I stumbled across the Park House. They were looking for a chef, and I spoke to the owners and I came to visit and I got a really good vibe. It gave me a spark.”
That spark, it seems, has ignited a burning desire to get Cardiff, and Wales, recognised as one of the best foodie destinations in the world. “North Wales does pretty well for good restaurants, but in the south there’s not a lot,” he says. “In terms of street food, Cardiff is really up there, but in terms of fine dining, there’s very little. Of course, there’s James Sommerin in Penarth, but in the centre, there’s nothing. And Cardiff deserves a fine dining restaurant. “When I was working at the St David’s we won three rosettes, and then other restaurants in Cardiff seemed to be trying to emulate that. But now it feels like nowhere is trying for that any more. “There’s a lot of new bars opening, and Cardiff’s cocktail scene and pub scene is thriving, but hardly any new restaurants, and a lot of the restaurants in the city are chains which has hurt independents. “But I think now is a great opportunity for the Park House because people are getting annoyed with spending money on mediocre food, and they are questioning more and more where their food is coming from. “I remember when people were talking about closing the Arcades, but now they are full of independents – we’re starting to see a resurgence. “Tommy Heaney is going to be opening in Pontcanna, and all we need is one or two more people to come through and help spearhead the movement. “I’d love nothing more than to achieve and amazing restaurant here at the Park House, but also for someone else to achieve it. “With competition brings
customers and you need friendly competition. It makes you improve your game and you don’t get complacent. “And if we win a Michelin-star then it starts a snowball effect that can help the whole city because people start talking about it.” For Andrew, though, it’s not just about personal success, or achieving accolades for The Park House (although he does undoubtedly want those things). He wants to provide a showcase for local producers, and inspire a new generation of young Welsh culinary talent. Not much, then! “It’s not about me,” he says. “It’s not about the four walls of Park House. It’s not about Cardiff. It’s not even about Wales. It’s about starting a movement. “When I first came back, I struggled to find suppliers. I didn’t know anything was there and I got a bit upset and I started ordering most of my produce from France. “But, slowly, one by one, I found suppliers and now I’ve got to the point where maybe 70% of the produce I use is Welsh. And all my suppliers have the same ethos as me. They care about local produce and they care about what they are doing. They want to do something good, and

they want to push Wales on to a world scene.” “If I use someone’s produce and I tell the customers about them and we win a Michelinstar, then it helps them. “The lamb that I use is the best lamb I have ever tasted. The flour comes from this little mill and it’s so good you could just eat it with a spoon. We’ve got Cardiff Salad, which is being grown just down the road and is organic, beautiful veg, grown in Welsh soil by people who really care about what they are doing. We need to praise that to the world!”

There’s certainly no doubting Andrew’s passion, and it’s something he’s keen to pass on to young chefs. But, that is often easier said than done. “There’s a problem in the industry that no-one wants to work as a chef any more,” he says. “And in this part of Wales, there’s no-one to look up, there’s no one on the world stage. I think that we devalue the work of a chef, and people think that it’s hard work and it’s long hours and it’s a hot, sweaty kitchen and you get screamed and shouted at. “It’s not like that though. I mean, yes, you do have to work hard – but you have to work hard at any job. But in my kitchen we have music playing all day and we have a laugh. We sing and dance and experiment with food. “For me, it’s about guiding and showing the kids that you can cook and enjoy yourself and have a life and if you are passionate about food and love what you are doing you can go everywhere. “When I was 15, I got given an amazing opportunity to work in an amazing restaurant and learn amazing things and out of that I have come to where I am now. “I’ve had an amazing life, but that wouldn’t have happened if someone hadn’t given me that chance at the beginning, and I want to give that chance to somebody.” And, despite having only been with the Park House since September last year, Andrew’s already planning his world domination. “I want to open another restaurant,” he says. “And a bakery, and a vegetable shop. But, most importantly, it’s about making people happy, and helping the people around us, and getting Wales known for it’s amazing food – not just the rugby. am trying to get our finances sorted out following a divorce, but my ex-husband won’t produce the requested details of his assets. How much power does the court have to force him to do this? I feel that fines and “contempt of court” are unlikely to be a deterrent, so this could go on for years. A: The court will take a very dim view of the matter if it has ordered your ex-husband to produce details of his finances and he fails to do so. “Contempt of court” is regarded as a threat to the administration of justice and is taken very seriously. Disregard of a court order to disclose information without good reason will lead first to a penal notice being attached and to your ex-husband being ordered to pay your costs. If he still fails to comply, then you can apply to a higher judge for proceedings to commit your husband to prison. Whilst, usually, this will
initially lead to a suspended sentence, it is a fairly powerful deterrent. Further, if your husband continues not to engage in the process it is open to the court to proceed to a final hearing and make its own inferences, based on the information available to it, which could lead to the court transferring all the available assets to you. It would therefore, be imprudent of him to ignore such an order. These matters are complex, however, and you would be sensible to instruct a solicitor experienced in such matters. n

Big plans are afoot for Cardiff Airport
Cardiff Airport has unveiled its vision for the next 20 years

he next two decades could see some major developments at Cardiff Airport. The airport has revealed a draft masterplan, which it hopes will enable it to grow passenger numbers from 1.5million a year, to 3.2million by 2040. The ‘Draft Masterplan’ was launched by Rt Honourable Carwyn Jones, First Minister of Wales; the Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Transport, Ken Skates; airport chairman Roger Lewis and airport CEO Deb Barber. The plan includes attracting new airlines to secure new routes; diversifying the airport to develop opportunities for aviation, cargo, education, technology and

innovation; a brand new two-level terminal including the latest “smart” technology; building a new four-star hotel complete with business and conference facilities; developing a new multi-storey car park and creating a new transport hub with improved rail links. Roger Lewis, chairman of Cardiff Airport, said, “2018 has been a transformational year for Cardiff Airport and for Wales as we’ve already welcomed over 9% more passengers to the airport and more inbound visitors to the country than ever before. “We have always been ambitious with our plans and this draft masterplan continues to show the confidence we have in our business and in the region. The airport plays a vital role in delivering for Wales and developing even further as a viable alternative gateway to the UK.” Earlier this year, a new Qatar Airways route was launched between Cardif and Doha, and the departure lounge had a £4m makeover, which included the addition of two

THE THIGH’S THE LIMIT A young businessman from Cardiff has launched a range of swimming shorts specifically for men with large thighs and regular sized waists. Jordan Bishop, 23, a rugby and children’s sports coach, developed the idea behind Stridez when shopping for swimming trunks for a holiday. Due to the limited choice available in stores and online for men his shape and size, Jordan was forced to buy large, ill-fitting shorts that would fit over his legs but were far too big around the waist. Concluding that he couldn’t be the only person out there struggling to find a pair of shorts to fit their size, Jordan ran a survey which he shared on social media, throughout his gym and with his fellow rugby players, the results of which overwhelmingly corroborated his personal experiences. After a year in development, Stridez has now launched as an online shop and is also being stocked in three locations in south Wales including 7 Clothing on Wellfield Road and Ion gyms in both
Cardiff and Neath. Jordan said, “I struggled for years to find shorts that fit me properly and eventually decided to take it upon myself to come up with the solution. As a nation of rugby players there are a lot of guys out there like me who have big thighs but leaner waists and we’re not being catered for by the fashion industry at large. “I think I have found a real gap in the market and hope Stridez benefits other men who have been experiencing the same issue. The positive response so far has been incredible.” Jordan launched Stridez with the support of Big Ideas Wales, part of the Business Wales service to encourage youth entrepreneurship in Wales. Big Ideas Wales is funded by Welsh Government and the European Regional Development Fund aimed at anyone between the age of five and 25 who wants to develop a business idea.

FIT FOR PURPOSE A new gym will be opening in the Red Dragon Centre in September. Simply Gym, which is run by Swanseabased Bay Leisure, will be taking over the 20,000 sq ft site formerly occupied by Evolution and is investing £1million to launch a brand new, state-of-the-art gym facility. The hope is to make the Cardiff location Simply Gym’s flagship offering with a full studio, a spin studio with ICG bikes, Hammer Strength equipment, web-enabled TVs on exercise machines, a ladies’ only gym and a coffee shop serving Starbucks. As the judges said, “Wales Millennium Centre is at the top of its game. It’s at the heart of the city and is constantly contributing to the community. It’s a beacon for Cardiff.” Little wonder then that it scooped the Platinum Award, as well as being crowned the winner in the Leisure & Tourism category at this year’s Cardiff Life Awards. Here, head of communications Elin Rees, recalls the big night… including Cardiff’s New Theatre in March.
So how did it feel to win a Cardiff Life Award? Incredible! And to win the Platinum Award too was a huge surprise – the other category winners were all very worthy of the ‘winner of winners’ award and any one of them could have scooped it.
What’s the biggest challenge of working at this kind of venue? It is very busy! It can be hard to juggle everything sometimes but there’s no chance of getting bored here and I prefer to work in a busy environment anyway.
Why do you think Wales Millennium Centre won? Wales Millennium Centre belongs to everyone and I think most people in Cardiff have visited – whether it’s to see a show or to take part in family or free activities. I think people are also becoming increasingly aware of our charitable work. And 2017 was the year that we produced our largest show to date – Tiger Bay: the Musical – which audiences absolutely loved.
Who inspires you in your job? Many people have inspired me over the years. But, nowadays, my inspiration to work hard and be successful in my career is my two-yearold daughter. What advice would you give someone looking to go into this sector? Go out and experience as much of the arts as you possibly can. We are spoilt for choice here in Cardiff – there’s always something going on and you need to be aware of the breadth of Cardiff’s cultural scene if you want to work in arts PR or marketing.
What’s your favourite thing about working at Wales Millennium Centre? Just walking in to our beautiful building each day is really inspiring. And I work with lovely, talented, committed people. What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever been given? To try to combine your career with something you are passionate about – which is exactly what I’m doing now.

What plans are there for Wales Millennium Centre? As well as providing a home for the best international touring work we are now creating even more of our own productions, most of which we are developing alongside Welsh talent. What have audiences got to look forward to? In early 2019, our brand new production of Agatha Christie’s psychological thriller The Mirror Crack’d will be going on a UK tour –
What do you love most about being in Cardiff? The people in Cardiff really are lovely – I spent more than 10 years living in London and coming home to Cardiff and to be amongst Cardiffians has made me very happy. I also love the fact I can walk from my home to work through parks and along the river. It helps me relax. Tell us your favourite bit of Wales Millennium Centre trivia There are 121 acoustic profile holes on the base of every single seat in the Donald Gordon Theatre which means that, even if the house isn’t full, it will still sound as if it is. Tell us about your business in one sentence? An elegant catering and events company creating beautiful food for high profile foodies. How did you get into your industry? I started out in the kitchen when I was 15 and found the whole kitchen environment and lifestyle so exciting. It was demanding but I could see that it could give you that spark to want to get to work and do your very best in whatever section you would be in. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? I think I’m living in the highlight at the moment! I feel incredibly proud and honoured to work with with the team I have and sometimes when we have day with more than seven events, feeding thousands of people at an incredibly high standard I have to pinch myself as I couldn’t ask for a more loyal hardworking bunch What advice would you give anyone thinking of going into your industry? I think the perception of people who run their own business is that it must be amazing to be your own boss butI have never had so many bosses as I do now! From clients in contracts and venues, to brides, grooms and customers, they are all your boss in some way, so it’s important to stay grounded and humble and never let your ego get out – however successful you may be. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? Don’t tell me sky’s the limit when there are footprints on the moon. In essence, nothing is impossible.

Tell us about your business in one sentence? Do Digital Realities specialises in all types of 3D work for your business. How did you get into your industry? Interiors and product design have been my main interest since leaving college and I started the business when I saw a growing need in the market to outsource 3D services. I knew that it was something that I could do myself, and hopefully be good at. Was this always your dream career? No, but I always knew I wanted to run my own business. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? Winning the NatWest Welsh Entrepreneur of the Year and most recently winning the BiTC Cymru Responsible Business award for Talent Development in June for the DO Academy. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? Embrace other organisations, people and technologies. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who appreciate your efforts. What advice would you give anyone thinking of going into your industry? It will be hard work, rewarding, satisfying and challenging, but above all keep the bigger picture in mind.

How did you get into your industry? It happened completely by chance! Having worked in various sales and management positions for about 10 years prior to recruitment, and having been made redundant twice during the recession, I found myself seeking a new challenge. A friend of mine was working in recruitment and believed it would be a perfect fit for me. Recruitment combines sales, service and relationship building, all of which matched my personality and career ambitions. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? Without doubt, setting up Lucid Recruitment in 2014. I had always wanted to run my own
business and the timing was right for me to give it a shot! Recruitment, as with many industries is highly competitive, but I truly believe that if you are offering a competitive, excellent service, you will succeed. I am very proud of Lucid’s achievements over the last four years and I’m very much looking forward to an exciting future. What is the biggest challenge when setting up a business? Originally, my biggest challenge, was dealing with my own naivety. When starting out, you have no real understanding of what is involved. I had no idea how much I had to learn – apart from the fact that I needed an income! In my enthusiasm, I didn’t give much thought to the day-to-day tasks of running a business such as invoicing, payroll, marketing, tax and VAT. You need to be able to adapt and learn a variety of skills to survive and fortunately for me, this is all part of the excitement of running a business and I have loved the journey so far and wouldn’t change it for the world.

John is a well-known chef around Cardiff – he and his wife used to run Arbennig restaurant – and now he’s created DiRT events and supper clubs dishing up delicious veg-based delicacies. When he’s not cooking up a storm he’s busy attending to his husbandly and fatherly duties.

What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you?
Being whipped by a stripper in my pants at my 18th birthday party in front of all my work colleagues. It was awful! Rene Redzepi, Skye Gyngell, Connor McGregor, Ryan Reynolds, Eric Cantona, Jay Z – there would be some entertaining conversations to say the least! When did you last cry, and why?

Daps, I honestly think that it doesn’t matter what you are wearing, as long as you’ve got good shoes. My wife is always telling me that I’ve got more shoes than her – and it’s probably true! If you have a spare five minutes in the day, what are you likely to fill it with?
Coffee, I love going out to the
independent coffee shops around Cardiff when I get a spare five minutes. What’s your earliest childhood memory?
I remember when I was very small going out on the boat at sea with my dad and grandad. My brother and I used to love that boat, until the time we were stranded in a cove… but that’s another story! Favourite places to eat/drink and shop in Cardiff?
We love taking the kids to Dusty Knuckle. It’s best pizzas around and we all love the relaxed atmosphere those guys have created there. The courgette and burnt lemon pizzas are incredible. Ceri and I are looking forward to visiting Heaney’s when it opens in Pontcanna too. Tell us about a secret/ underrated Cardiff spot we might not be aware of…
If you like cooking at home, Exotica World Foods in Canton is great place for picking up herbs and spices that are harder to get hold of. It’s a proper little treasure trove.
