GOLDEN TOUCH The hottest interior trends for 2017
Hello, Salisbury... ... and welcome 2017! As the new editor of Salisbury Life, I’m really excited to step into the role and looking forward to finding out more about this wonderful city and everything it has in store for the coming 12 months. Before we find out about all the events that are coming up, we thought we’d say a final farewell to 2016 (pg 12) with a look back at the exhibitions, shows, parades and festivals that took place throughout the city. And so on with the new! January is a good time to take stock after the heady month of December and there are many ways to give yourself a boost. From picking up a new sport, engaging in a spot of yoga or learning a new language – Salisbury has it all to offer. If you’ve been inspired by our cover photo, it’s a local property called Ansty Plum that was renovated and redesigned by architects Coppin Dockray (www.coppindockray.co.uk). We explore some of the interior trends for 2017 on pg 38. I love an adventure, so I’ll be taking a front row seat at the BANFF Mountain Film Festival in February (pg 28) to get my thrills vicariously! See you there? WHAT’S MAKING THE NEWS IN SALISBURY
A YEAR IN SALISBURY... While 2016 was certainly annus horriblis for many, before we embark on 2017 let’s take a final look back at the events in Salisbury that made it one to remember – for all the right reasons! By K AT I E N IC HOL LS
John Craxton exhibition brightened up January
Pure drama at Theatre Fest West with local talent on show
JANUARY
Salisbury Museum’s first exhibition of 2016 saw 20th-century artist John Craxton exploring his creative and physical wanderings, from the art and archaeology of the Cranborne Chase to the sunny climes of Greece. A unique treat that brightened up the grey January skies.
FEBRUARY
Salisbury was in full bloom during February as lovers across the city looked forward to Valentine’s Day and the city was aglow with the scent of flowers from local traders.
MARCH
The fifth Theatre Fest West proved to be bigger and better than ever with shows sprawled across five venues showcasing an impressive portfolio of work from local writers and directors. 6 I SALISBURY LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

A gastronomic treat at the Salisbury Food Festival
Baby red pandas and Longleat’s new additions
AUGUST
The Cathedral was the destination for sculptor Rebecca Newnham’s elegant sculpture entitled Launch. Positioned on the west lawn of the Cathedral grounds, the sculpture’s creator described it as: “like a magnificent bird, showing the immense energy required to take off from a stationary position and elevate like a swan taking flight from a calm lake”.
SEPTEMBER
The food-loving folk of Salisbury were in for a bona-fide gastronomic treat this month as the city’s foodie festival threatened to fatten up the city’s residents with an aromatic and delicious array of food stalls from local producers and restaurateurs.
Salisbury remembered those who fell at the Somme
OCTOBER
A set of twin red pandas were born at Longleat; a big success for the safari park as it was only the second time the endangered specials had been bred at the attraction. Named Ajenda and Rufina, the baby cubs ticked all the cute-factor buttons for October and, well, for the rest of year actually…
NOVEMBER
Salisbury Cathedral marked the end of the World War I Somme Offensive with a moving and unique Remembrance exhibition called 100 Hearts for 100 Years, featuring four original WWI ‘sweetheart cushions’ made by wounded soldiers as they recuperated from their injuries.
DECEMBER
The city was lit up with bright lights as Salisbury embraced the beginning of the festive season on 1 December with a gorgeous and glittering lantern procession through the city. 8 I SALISBURY LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

Celebrating 25 years of TONI&GUY in Salisbury HAIRDRESSING
Renowned as an innovator within the hair industry, Toni&Guy bridge the gap between high fashion and hairdressing and in 2016 Toni&Guy Salisbury celebrated 25 years as one of the company’s flagship salons. In 1991, Phil Smith, aged 23, moved to Salisbury and opened the Toni&Guy salon. It was Phil's first and only the sixth Toni&Guy at that time – a challenge that has become a huge success and the beginning of an empire that stretches across the world with Phil opening his 28th salon in 2005. In 1992, his wife Louise joined his busy Salisbury team before successfully gaining her Toni&Guy Diploma. She became manager of Toni&Guy Salisbury and, alongside Phil, they have won multiple awards including Salon of the Year and Business
®
Director of the year as well as multiple gongs at the BHAs with Phil being inducted into their Hall of Fame. Louise is now at the helm of the Salisbury salon and the team pride themselves on delivering the highest standard of customer service to each and every client. Various members of their talented team of stylists and technicians have gained Toni&Guy Diplomas. They have been trained on advanced courses, such as Wella Master Colour Expert and worked in the Toni&Guy session team at London Fashion Week alongside the International Artistic Team. They are always on hand to offer expert advice and do what they do best: create hair that is individual and easy to live with, interpreting fashion trends with versatile wearable styles.

THINK ABOUT THE BENEFITS, TAKE THE FIRST STEP AND DON’T WORRY ABOUT NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE ALL OF THE STEPS, THEY WILL REVEAL THEMSELVES...
A
s the last echoes of Auld Lang Syne fade into the background and we stumble, blinking into the bright light of a new year, thoughts inevitably turn to improving our lives. After the hedonism of the party season, it’s undoubtedly refreshing to consider yourself on the brink of a revamped version of yourself: fitter, healthier, wiser and, well, happier than the ‘you’ that left 2016 behind. Of course, New Year’s resolutions are infamously there to be broken. Unrealistic expectations are the major cause of failure. Local trainer Erak Simsson and owner of Coach Me Trim & Slim has guided many Salisbury residents into fitness and a healthier lifestyle: “Think about the benefits, take the first step and don’t worry about being able to see all of the steps, they will start to reveal themselves once you get going and the rewards far outweigh putting it on the back burner.” Better in the long term, we believe, to take a slow approach to self-improvement. A process that features a careful balance rather than a headlong dash into change: a little bit of pampering, a dash of pushing yourself physically and a sprinkle of spiritual and cerebral care and attention is surely the recipe for success. Be gone procrastination! Here’s our guide to enriching mind, body and spirit… www.mediaclash.co.uk I SALISBURY LIFE I 13

FIT FOR LIFE
Improving fitness always teeters at the top of resolution lists. It’s also often the first one to fall by the wayside. But it doesn’t have to be an onerous prospect, or an expensive one for that matter. Parkrun is a nationwide 5km event that takes place across towns and cities in the UK. Organisers are keen to stress it’s a ‘timed run’ not a race. Everyone is welcome to run, jog or walk the distance and it’s free. Salisbury’s Parkrun takes place at Churchill Gardens at 9am every Saturday. If the prospect of running feels intimidating, Erak Simsson focuses on nurturing a positive mind set regarding exercise with his Coach Me Trim and Slim programme. Turn to page 57 for more on Erak’s up and coming courses. It’s an open party and everyone at every level of fitness can benefit from Erak’s immense knowledge, whether you want to lose weight, increase fitness or gain confidence. Zumba teacher Kirstie Pugh also took an inclusive approach when she designed her Zumba Gold and Seated Zumba Gold classes. “No dance experience is needed,” says Kirstie. “The movements mimic many dance styles like salsa, rumba and tango, to name but a few, and have been brilliantly adapted for low impact and chair exercise. The focus is on fun and socialising, and everyone participates to their own ability.” Those looking for more of a toning discipline should consider trying out Salisbury Kettlecise. This new discipline is reputedly a wonder sport for toning, strength and endurance.
SOOTHE AND SMOOTH
Yin’s perfect partner, as we all know, is Yang. And so it is that after exercise a good relaxation ritual is a must to reduce muscle fatigue and improve flexibility. Once glutes are fully toned, thoughts can turn to a little self-indulgence. Bishopstrow Hotel in Longleat is home to the Halcyon Spa. This aptly-named haven of indulgence offers a range of spa treatments including deep massage, spa ocean wraps and facials as well as more exotic experiences, such as the coconut rub and milk ritual wrap. It’s a wonderful location and it’s well worth taking a day out to visit. Vita Skin Spa at 26 St Ann Street is another pamper paradise where a range of therapies are on offer to treat the whole body from head to toe. Massage, manicures, laser treatments, microdermabrasion and non-surgical face lift are all on the menu. Fancy an afternoon tea after your treatment? Just book in advance. If your post-exercise aches need more intensive treatment, Sarum Physiotherapy Centre offers a wide range of physio and related therapies from a team of highly-experienced practitioners who offer treatments that will keep you moving.
PRIMP & PREEN

Choose from four different salon treatments: thickening, strengthening, moisturising, or anti-ageing. “These are all packed with essential oils and antioxidants to give your hair a boost,” says Seven Ivy owner, Dan. Charlotte Churchill is also offering January treats for your locks, “We are so excited for clients to try the miracle that is Olaplex,” says Charlotte. “During January we will add Olaplex to your colour service At The Studio and we will give you a 20% reduction from the usual additional costing of the Olaplex service. Cheryl Dunford runs six-week mindfulness courses as well as individual sessions at the centre in St Thomas’ Square, Salisbury. Courses cover mindfulness of the breath and body, working with obstacles and using mindfulness to deal with our thoughts. A mindful approach to life can, says Cheryl, give you “increased emotional resilience to help you deal with stress more effectively. Greater ability to focus the mind, increase attention and increase enjoyment and enthusiasm for life.” Ideal for a new year refresh. Yoga teacher and owner of All That Yoga Anthea Aireton-Downer is also on a mission to enrich the spiritual awareness of the people of Salisbury. She hosts regular Hatha yoga sessions around the city and as well as these regular sessions, on 28 January she will be running her Winter Warmer retreat at Wisdom House in Romsey. It promises to soothe body and spirit with a schedule that includes a morning of Himalayan Hatha yoga followed by a vegetarian lunch, then an afternoon of Restorative Yoga and guided mediation.
ALL IN THE MIND
Make 2017 an edifying experience filled with new mind-expanding experiences. “Knowledge,” said the 16th century philosopher Francis Bacon “is power”. Okay, so he probably wasn’t referring to genteel, crafty pursuits but nevertheless, head to No44 Homeworks on Fisherton St and you’ll find a rolling schedule of workshops to enrich your life, including lampshade-making, Annie Sloan Chalk Paint workshops and upholstery tutorials. Pop into the shop afterwards too for a mooch around and a chat. Salisbury Arts Centre is, as always, a-buzz with inspiring activities, workshops and courses including scriptwriting, salsa, guitar, animation, filmmaking, life drawing and, one that’s piqued our interest, Frigg’s Finnish Fiddle Workshop. If you’re looking for something a little more committing than a short workshop, Wiltshire College are offering a cornucopia of creativebased courses in 2017 including life writing, upholstery, interior design and introduction to film directing. Maybe 2017 is the year to learn a language? The college run courses for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels in Italian, Spanish, French, German and Russian. It could be a passport to a whole new you. www.mediaclash.co.uk I SALISBURY LIFE I 17

Exercise: Making a commitment to the gym is a great new year resolution, but is it something you will continue? Instead why not simply leave the car at home more often, walk a longer route or start a walking group with your friends. Do something fun that increases your heart rate and make it a new regular habit!
Sleep: Getting the right amount of sleep is imperative to health and wellbeing. If you have recognised that you don’t get enough sleep change your routine, switch off the electronics early, enjoy a bath or hot drink and go to bed.
Diet: What we eat and drink has a significant impact on our health. Why not keep a diary for the day to highlight your weaknesses and where you can make changes from giving up sugar in your tea to reducing the amount of fat in your diet? Look for small alterations that will make a difference, you can build on as the year progresses and, of course, seek help if you are considerably worried about your weight.

he salon is our sanctuary, tucked away in a wonderful tranquil setting, on the edge of the city. Our passion is to create, and make our clients feel amazing about themselves. With the expert professional hair care we give to each and every client, you're guaranteed to come away with fabulous hair! You'll also have the most relaxing experience here at Charlotte Churchill Hair Studio, with fresh coffee and magazines at your fingertips.
MIRACLE INGREDIENT
Olaplex is our miracle ingredient. It has done nothing but astound us with its capabilities. It allows us as hairdressers to reach new heights as it actually repairs and strengthens your hair whilst your colour is processing! Now for the science bit. Olaplex permanently repairs the di-sulphide bonds – which can ordinarily break down during the colour process and this is what can cause damage to your hair.
Hair looks and feels brand new, there's no artificial shine and you're left with healthy, natural, shiny and strong hair. This miracle ingredient can either be added to your colour or, alternatively, you can have it as a stand-alone spa treatment to repair and strengthen. We now have Step 3 Olaplex at the studio, which is a takehome treatment. This maintains the in-salon treatment and protects from the thermal damage of your hair dryer and straighteners and other heated applicances.
Charlotte went out on location recently in the grounds of the beautiful cathedral having styled and prepared her models hair at the studio that morning.

winter wonders
Banish those winter bad hair days and save your hair in just one hour
W
e can experience bad hair days at any time of the year but winter months have a particularly damaging effect on our locks. Cold dry air can lift the cuticle of the hair root, meaning loss of moisture. Add to this a windy day pulling your hair this way and that and your hair will suffer not only in appearance! Foggy and damp days cause frizz. Add to this the constant change in temperature and our hair, just like our skin suffers and you can start to understand just why every day can become a bad hair day! Ever suffered a day of static – where it looks like you have rubbed a balloon on your head? This is another side affect of winter hair, I’m afraid. You can help to address these issues at home but over conditioning can have the opposite effect and add to your problem. The good news is there is a solution and you can save your hair in one hour with the new BOND Ultim8 now available at Nicky Wyatt Hair. BOND Ultim8 is a complete bond protecting system that has fantastic benefits to your hair all year round, but especially winter. It provides a
deeply nourishing treatment, helps preserve hair fibres and prevent breakages. Did you know that 91% of women do things that can cause hair damage every day? To combat this and the winter hair problems you are most likely experiencing BOND Ultim 8 is the solution. You can enjoy the in-Salon treatment with blow dry and take home treatment for just £45. It takes just one hour to enjoy this stand alone treatment, or can be used during and following a professional hair colour or lightening service (colour not included in price quoted). Top tips for healthier hair this winter 1. Wear a hat or scarf on cold and windy days – even though you will suffer from bad hat hair! 2. A home deep conditioning treatment is a good way of keeping on top of winter hair, however, remember not all your hair may need this treatment. 3. Rinse off your conditioner with cooler water to help lock in moisture. Better still, why not treat yourself this January, relax in the calming new salon and let Nicky work her magic to banish your bad hair days!

A PAIR OF STAR-CROSSED LOVERS
Baby, it’s cold outside… well, yes, it is January after all. Nevertheless, things will be seriously heating up inside the Salisbury Arts Centre this month when it hosts a live screening of New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Romeo et Juliette. When Romeo et Juliette’s leading couple – soprano Diana Damrau and tenor Vittorio Grigolo – starred in the MET’s production of Manon, the New York Times gushed, “the temperature rises nearly to boiling every time Damrau and Grigolo are on stage together”. It’s an apt bit of casting, then, that sees the couple together again as Shakespeare’s fateful lovers in 19th century French composer Gounod’s adaption of the Bard’s classic tale of love gone wrong. Tony award-winning director, Bartlett Sher, was at the helm of this version of Romeo et Juliette and he has enjoyed critical success with it in the States. The Chicago Tribune claimed that Sher’s interpretation brings, “enough theatrical verve to restore one’s faith in the somewhat faded charms of Gounod’s 1867 lyric tragedy”. This lush production has also won acclaim for its stunning costumes as well as the score, written by Gianandrea Noseda. So expect to be transported far away from January’s grey and blustery skies to another time and place where passion and tragedy, rather than the wind, are the driving forces. Romeo et Juliette will be at the Salisbury Arts Centre on 21 January. Tickets costs £17 or £15 concessions (members £16/£14 concessions). The performance starts at 5.55pm (doors open at 5.10pm) and the running time is 210 minutes. If you wish to book a platter or place a sandwich order, please do so at least 24 hours prior to the performance start time. 01722 321744; boxoffice@salisburyarts.co.uk; www.salisburyartscentre.co.uk

eady to be awoken from your post-festive slumber? Itching to be inspired by those who dare? The BANFF Film Festival – an annual showcase of movies from around the world, telling tales of derringdo from adventurers and pioneers who love the wild outdoors – begins its nationwide tour in 25 January, and will be rolling into Salisbury on 22 February and then again on 31 March. The Festival can certainly boast longevity. The ‘mothership’ festival has been held at the start of November each year since 1975 in Banff, Canada, and is now a familiar feature on the UK circuit. Each year, filmmakers are asked to submit their films for inclusion in the festival. Audiences can expect a mix of styles, from highadrenaline action films following athletes as they push themselves to the limit to more in-depth explorations of mountain culture. As this issue of Salisbury Life goes to press, BANFF have yet to announce the full film line-up but attendees can expect a vibrant mix of movies – long and short – that follow the pursuits of ordinary people doing some truly extraordinary things. Four Mums In A Boat tracks the story of four women from Yorkshire with no adventure or endurance experience, who successfully break the world record as the oldest rowers to cross the Atlantic. Max Your Days follows a group of adrenaline junkies as they skate, snowboard or ride around the world, while Metronomic is a vertigo-inducing movie about high-flying athletes/musicians. Another film on the bill this season is Doing It Scared, a

move by Matthew Newton that documents a particularly daring ascent by Lancashire-born climber Paul Pritchard. During the 1980s and 90s, Paul Pritchard was a world-famous athlete with a reputation for tackling some of the boldest routes. In 1998, as he was attempting to climb a slender sea stack called the Totem Pole off the coast of Tasmania he was struck by a rock, causing a devastating head injury that left him paralysed on his right hand side. Doing It Scared follows Paul as he goes back to the Totem Pole to ‘close the loop’ on 18 years of struggle to return to a life of adventure. We caught up with Paul on a visit to the UK from his home in Tasmania. How did you first become a climber? I was always really rubbish at team sports but at school a physics teacher, who was also a climber, offered to take a few of us out in PE time instead of going on cross country runs and I found out I was good at something for the first time in my life. I was a bit of a bad lad growing up – always setting things on fire – and I found climbing really calming. As soon as you step off the ground, you’ve got to concentrate. You’re living in the moment and that’s something I’ve taken with me all my life. How did you start a career in climbing? I moved to North Wales and I gained a reputation for extremely bold climbs – bold as in dangerous and unprotected. Pretty soon I started mountaineering in the greater ranges in the Himalayas and Patagonia and Baffin Island. They weren’t like Mount Everest – they were extremely steep with rock spires. I think that I learnt how to control fear and I realised that w

then something clicked when I managed to walk around the rehab centre. I was in a wheelchair for a year but when I walked (it was only 100m) I thought, ‘Oh my God, maybe I could get some semblance of my life back if I kept going. So then I climbed a little hill above my village in Wales and seven years later I climbed Kilimanjaro. Eleven years after my accident, I did my first lead climb in Italy. Half my body is paralysed so it’s really messy to watch me climb but I realised for the first time that climbing is so subjective that that’s the beauty of it. It doesn’t matter what grade you’re climbing, if you’re close to your limit and pushing yourself then it doesn’t matter.
every animal gets scared and that it’s not about overcoming fear, it’s about working with your fear and that’s what Doing It Scared is about. It’s got broader connotations for every day life: public speaking, for example, you might get scared but you realise that you’ve got to get scared and just do it anyway. What happened in 1998 when you first attempted the Totem Pole? I won a writing prize for my first book Deep Play and with the prize money me and my partner at the time, Celia Bull, went on an around-the-world expedition. We found ourselves in Australia at the Totem Pole. It was on every serious climber’s hit list at that time. It’s an incredible piece on rock about four metres wide and 70 metres high and it sways in the wind, so we wanted to try it. We were attempting the second free ascent of the Totem Pole, but it wasn’t to be. As we abseiled down, a loose piece of rock – probably the only loose piece of rock on the Totem Pole – hit me square on the head. I wasn’t wearing a helmet. Not many people did in those days. I was hanging upside down bleeding from the head and we were totally alone, just the two of us. Celia abseiled down and got me upright in the sling. Then she had to haul me 30 metres up to the halfway ledge and make me safe, then climb back up the summit and run eight kilometres for help. I think that that was an incredible rescue. One of the most impressive mountaineering rescues ever completed by a woman.
Canine prowess in Dog Power (pic by Jordan Scheven); on the ocean waves with For Mums in a Boat; a careful balance with Metronomic
How long was your recovery? I was in hospital in Australia for six weeks and then I was sent back to hospital on the Wirral where I spent a year. During that year I sold all my climbing gear. I felt really depressed but
How did if feel to return to the Totem Pole? It felt like I was closing a loop. Since I’ve been living in Tasmania every year, unless the weather’s awful, I’ve tried to do my pilgrimage to the headland and look down upon the Totem Pole. About five years ago I started to think, ‘Wouldn’t it be fantastic to climb it’, but I thought it was a pipe dream. Then somebody suggested climbing a rope up it. But how can I climb a rope with one hand and one leg? For the last year, myself and two friends developed a system whereby it seemed quite doable. We developed a rope with ascending clamps, so 126 one-hand pull-ups later and I was on the summit of the Totem Pole. It wasn’t cathartic because I’d done all my challenging of demons long ago but it was something that I had to do. It did feel like I was closing a very dramatic loop. What would you like audiences to take away from this film? In the film, what I say is that disabled people are not unable, it’s society that disables them. Some people find that a bit challenging. They think that because I’m climbing the Totem Pole, which is a dramatic piece of rock, and some ablebodied people couldn’t do such as thing, so why do disabled people need support if I can achieve it? My message is one of support. I didn’t climb the Totem Pole I climbed a rope up the Totem Pole. That rope was my support and with support – be it technical or human support (because I had nine people helping me that day) – all people are capable of extraordinary things. Nobody lives truly independently. What’s next for Paul Pritchard? Climbing is very painful for me. I do it for the challenge but for the past five years I’ve been concentrating on trike touring. I’ve got a pedal tricycle – I went to Mount Everest base camp on it. Next year I’m going to go from the lowest point below sea level to the highest. www.banff-uk.com

FOOD
Ewe Tree Café Cholderton Charlie’s is a rare breeds farm near Salisbury. For a long time it has been a fun place for a day out and now, with a new head chef and a rebranded café, it’s also a great choice for lunch too By R AC H E L I FA NS
I
t was a beautiful winter’s day when we went to the Ewe Tree Café. A frosty start had turned into the brightest of sunny days. As such, the converted barn was the perfect place to make like a cat and sit with the warm sun shining through the glass on our backs. A lazy wasp had the same idea as it clung to the glass just behind us, its drunken buzz reminding me of late summer, which feels like a distant memory. And a peacock made the most of the sun on the top of a brick wall, just feet from where we perched. Ewe Tree relaunched in mid November with a new menu, a new chef and new ambitions. Kate, the chef, is on a mission to elevate the café from sandwich-and-cake joint to somewhere much more special. And she’s making great strides in that already. The menu offers lots of lunchtime classics like sausage and mash, fish and chips, vegetarian curry and the burger I chose, and it has sandwiches too. One of the best things about working at the Ewe Tree, however, is the free rein Kate has on the menu. She is already starting to flex her creative muscles with dishes like Vietnamese River Cobbler served with sautéed new potatoes, chorizo and spinach, and Gressingham Duck with orange, soy and ginger sauce. The owners have plans to move the café to a different barn and use the building that is currently the Ewe Tree as a restaurant, a place that will

be a destination in its own right. Hence the motivation to experiment with more restaurant-style food to gradually morph the menu totally. I chose the 6oz steak burger with winterslaw and sweet potato. The burger was from Style Farm Butchers in Warminster and was very well-cooked, juicy and tasty. The stars on the plate for me though were the sweet potato fries – a great mix of sweet and salty and perfectly fluffy inside while crispy (not floppy) on the outside – and the onion rings. A freshly made onion ring puts you firmly on the path to friendship. Some of the meat used in the cooking is directly from the farm and where it isn’t, it is from local suppliers like Style Farm. The owners – ever keen to expand and improve – have recently planted new vineyards and plan to be producing wine in a few years’ time. They host a lot of events, like wedding and parties, in one of the barns, and manage the catering for these too. If viticulture, events, rare breeds and bistro-style dining weren’t enough, Cholderton Charlies also has another string to its bow, namely its adjoining youth hostel with capacity for no fewer than 70 people! It’s used throughout the year with big groups, families and those looking for walking holidays and even seasonal winter solstice type breaks. Oh, and don’t forget the kids treetop adventure walk and pig racing too. The list is never ending! As Kate says: “We have a steady flow of people coming through the winter, numbers which will hopefully grow with the new Ewe Tree to entice them. But it’s spring, summer and autumn when the place really comes alive. We throw open these doors and the boundary between inside and outside blurs. People fill the tables in the sunny garden.” What a great reason to return.

hile 2016 certainly threw up several curveballs on the political landscape, when it came to interior design, colours remained cool and calm with a plethora of steely greys interrupted only by accent colour blocking in eye-popping shades. KEEP IT COOL
Ready for the drum roll? The style-setting colour for 2017 is… a cool blue hue named Denim Drift by Dulux. “Our review of international architecture, fashion and design trends revealed that blue is the colour of the moment,” says Heleen van Gent, Creative Director of Dulux’s Global Aesthetics Centre. “To make it relevant for your home, the team chose a blue that works as well in a kitchen as it does in a bedroom. Denim Drift is the must-have colour for 2017.” Jemma Page from Orchid Furniture in Winchester (and now Stockbridge) concurs that cooler shades will continue to feature heavily in 2017: “Blues and greys will top the list for favourites, either as accent colours or the main event, each of which make up the majority of our stock here at Orchid. Both are easy to work with, bringing a fresh warmth in the UK light, as opposed to creams and yellow tones, which although wonderful in the Mediterranean simply suck up what little light we have and cast a ‘gloom’ over accent colours and features.”

WHILE COOLER SHADES WILL
DOMINATE, INTERIOR DESIGNERS ARE PREDICTING THAT ACCENT COLOURS WILL BE MADE UP OF SOFT HUES
SOFT & PRETTY
While these cooler shades will dominate, interior designers are also predicting that accent colours will be made up of soft hues, which will add a more gentle aspect to a room. Laura Thomas of Harlequin Bathrooms, Salisbury agrees that blending neutrals with pretty colours will feature strongly in 2017. “For many years neutrals and greys have been very popular in bathrooms and, as they bring a timeless feel, they will remain strong favourites. However, we are starting to play with the use of colour in our designs that inject personality to the room. The rise in popularity of painted kitchen furniture has come through to bathrooms with manufactures now offering many subtle or feature colours to washstands and fitted furniture.” Metallics will also make an appearance, but don’t overdo it! We’re not talking an 1980s sheen of shiny fabrics adorning your furnishings. Keep it subtle and you’re on to a winner, says Laura from Harlequin: “Colour has also been emerging though brassware with suppliers now offering bronze, nickel and brushed finishes including gold. Yes, gold is back! It is very refreshing to see gold on modern taps, showers, enclosures and accessories. Our favourite, brushed gold, has a beautiful warmth to it and it is much softer than the heavy gold used in traditional bathrooms.” Jemma from Orchid agrees that there should be at “least one shiny object in a room and metallics are very much to the fore”.

BRINGS ATMOSPHERE AND LAYERS OF PERSONALITY... even more of a buzzword. Designers will practice approaching single spaces with an eye to breaking them into multiple living areas using partitions, flooring and different levels to distinguish between a room’s function. Be careful, though, not to make your home sterile. The concept of hygge will continue to play its part in interior design. This Danish word, which translates broadly as ‘enjoying the simple things’ means that interiors will also feature cosy corners and warm textures. Wiltshire house Ansty Plum is a recent nominee for the Royal Institute of British Architects House of the Year Award 2016 (and this issue’s cover star). The house encapsulates this perfect partnership of functionality and warmth. Architects Coppin Dockray resurrected Ansty Plum for modern living without damaging the charm of its original 1960s aesthetic, bringing the house back to life while reducing its carbon emissions by 80%. Sandra Coppin describes the house as “post-war modern” and predicts in 2017 people will “recognise the value of our best buildings of the ’60s and ’70s... despite their poor environmental performance, they can be made to work efficiently. I believe that we will see more of these buildings being put to re-use and enjoyed”.

terracotta, this will become a familiar sight, used as accents in a room and providing a counterbalance to cool blues and clean lines. And here’s another little surprise for 2017: the return of cork. Yes, that 1980s favourite has finally made a comeback! Its cosy, orange colour and practical attributes (perfect for sticking up notes and messages) make it the ultimate fit for 2017’s interior themes. “The use of texture,” says Jemma from Orchid, “is becoming increasingly widespread, which brings atmosphere and layers of personality in the room scheme”. If all these natural textures and shades are a bit too earthy for your taste, you’ll also be pleased to hear that 2017’s nod to the ’80s doesn’t stop at cork. Big, bold, geometrics and tropical prints will also be making an appearance adding a joyful, botanical theme to interiors.
TIME TO PLAY
While the more serious matter of modular design and creating functional but stylish spaces is an overriding theme of design in 2017, there’s still plenty of playtime to be enjoyed in interiors. And with a clean and cool template to work with you’ll have lots of options to introduce colour, fun and lots of personality. www.mediaclash.co.uk I SALISBURY LIFE I 43

in-toto kitchens If a new kitchen is on the cards in 2017 and you’re looking for some top-notch design guidance, then we’ve got just the place for you...
I
s there anything more satisfying than having a new kitchen installed? Shiny cupboards that close silently, a gleaming granite work surface, the gentle hum of appliances that all run smoothly… Ah, it’s the stuff of dreams! We all know that the kitchen is the heart of the house. It’s where the culinary magic happens, the family gathers and, of course, all the important discussions take place. If having a new kitchen installed is on your 2017 to-do list, Salisbury kitchen designers and installers in-toto is a must-visit showroom. Situated in the heart of the city, the all-female team at in-toto consists of director Kate Stacey and senior sales designer, Hania Southwell. Here you are guaranteed not only a smile and a warm welcome but the duo are both trained interior designers with years of experience working closely with customers to produce beautiful kitchens. Step inside the showroom and you immediately get a sense of their aesthetic: fresh, clean and stylish, with lovely touches of warmth and colour. in-toto Salisbury is a franchise, which Kate informs Salisbury Life is part of a German company called ALNO. “I used to work with them beforehand for their main contracts division and then I relocated down here and I wanted to open my own business,” she says. “It was an easy

decision because I knew the company and I knew the people as well as the product. Salisbury was identified as a town that could support an in-toto and we’ve been here for nearly seven years; it’s going very well.” She believes a contributing factor to their success is the quality of the German brand but also “because we’re an all-female team, and a lot of customers – especially ladies – don’t want men to design their kitchens for them, so it works really well”.
Customer care
Another reason for their success is the depths to which the team will go to ensure a strong relationship with customers. “We listen to what it is that they want,” says Hania. “We listen to the things they like to do, so if there’s a particular type of cooking they like, we’ll cater around that – or if there’s a particular kind of style they prefer, we’ll work with it.” “Hania has got a lovely customer at the moment,” adds Kate. “She came in with quite outrageous colour requests. Which is quite unusual. Normally, we do fairly a muted grey palette. She had some really lovely ideas. She’s actually ended up with something quite different to her original plan, but it’s full of colour and we literally can’t wait to do it.” Using software called Winner Design the team can produce a photographic render of

what a customer’s kitchen will look like. This creative process sometimes requires an element of compromise, particularly if a customer has unrealistic expectations of what they can achieve with the available space and budget. “We’ll always try and do what the customer is asking for,” says Hania. “We’ve got so many different types of product we can usually do what they ask. Sometimes, though, if a customer has a small kitchen and they want hundreds of appliances then that’s quite difficult because they want all this stuff fitted in and we have to suggest compromises. It’s about managing expectations and budgets.” Ah, yes, budget. It’s a sensitive subject, say Kate and Hania, and one that the team at in-toto are careful to treat with sensitivity. “We’ll always ask a customer what their budget is. Not so that we can turn around to them and say, ‘This kitchen is £10,000 but your budget is £20,000 so we’ll sell it to you for that’ – a lot of people have that fear. We always ask what they want to invest – because it is an investment. And we’ll always try and do a design on target. We might say, ‘This is everything you want but this is what’s in your budget’, so we’ll always do an alternative design. It’s very tailored to every single person.”
LOOKING ROSY
Before Kate gets up to leave for her Christmas break, she tells me that 2017 is looking rosy with the pair planning more exhibitions and shows so that customers can really see what they are capable of designing: “We did one recently in Shepton Mallet and we had a beautiful stand with a whole kitchen on display. That seems to be the way forward.” in-toto 21 Catherine St, Salisbury SP1 2DF; 01722 238177; www.intoto.co.uk/showrooms/view/salisbury

Netheravon Barrow Rescue team winning Heritage Project award
QUOTE OF THE ISSUE AWARDS
OPERATION RESCUE Former servicemen and women win prestigious conservation award The Ministry of Defence has named the Netheravon Barrow Rescue project in Wiltshire as winners of their coveted Heritage Award. Each year the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), which manages thousands of military sites in the UK and overseas, makes a series of awards on behalf of the MOD to recognise work that promotes environmental protection on the Defence Estate. The Netheravon Barrow Rescue saved an important early Bronze Age site close to Stonehenge, which was being destroyed by burrowing badgers. The excavation team was led by Wessex Archaeology’s Jackie McKinley, Phil Andrews and Dave Murdie, and supported by the Bulford Conservation Group, Landmarc Services and veterans taking part in Operation Nightingale. They discovered a wealth of items including a large collared urn dating back over 4,000 years. Wessex Archaeology described the Netheravon Barrow as
yielding one of the most important Early Bronze Age discoveries of recent years. The team from Operation Nightingale – which helps injured military personnel with their recovery by working on archaeological projects – won a prestigious Historic England Heritage Angel award for their work earlier this year. DIO Senior Archaeologist, Richard Osgood said: “I am delighted that this award has recognised the efforts made to save a 4,000 year old burial mound and some beautiful artefacts, which are now on display to the public. I’m especially pleased this award also recognises the contribution made by Operation Nightingale, which has made such a tangible difference to all those injured service men and women who have been involved in the project.” insidedio.blog.gov.uk

and advising them about what to buy from the retail range, so that they can create their own cakes. Other jobs of the day include in-house designing, which I then print onto icing. Of course, there’s always a constant stream of consultations with customers who are looking for bespoke cakes for special occasions. What’s the most extraordinary request you’ve ever had from a customer? Well, I would say that the most bizarre cake I’ve ever been asked to make is a pork pie, which isn’t strictly a cake! But the customer liked it. What’s been your proudest moment? I have to say that it’s the completion of the refurbishment of the Cake Forge studio. It looks fantastic and I’m incredibly grateful to my wife, Kate, for all her support. When we opened we held a champagne open evening. It was great to chat to people coming in and seeing them sample the cakes and view my work.
FOOD & DRINK
HAVE YOUR CAKE Anyone with a special celebration should make a beeline to see Dan Mills, cake maker extraordinaire and owner of Salisbury’s Cake Forge studio Do you come from Salisbury? I originally come from Southampton but I have lived in Salisbury for 20 years now. It’s a wonderful city and I love it here! How did the idea for the Cake Forge develop? It all started out as a hobby at home but the dining table became unsuitable once all the requests came flooding in. It was never really in my focus to start my business. It’s not something I always thought I’d do, until my hobby became more demanding due to the amount of people requesting my bespoke, one-of-a-kind cake designs and the Cake Forge was born. What are the highs and the lows of running your own business? Well, I think what I love about running my own business is the reality of being able to do something that I really enjoy. There’s nothing better than seeing people’s reactions when they get their cake and it’s more than they hoped for. The lows are the same for all small businesses: taking a risk that something will pay off and hoping that the orders will just keep coming in.
IT ALL STARTED AS A HOBBY AND THEN BECAME A BUSINESS
How do you unwind after a busy day? My relaxation once the day is over is to shut the world out and put on my headphones and get on my games console. Of course, I love taking time out with my wife and kids too! What plans do you have for the Cake Forge? My future plans are to build on what I’ve started by doing more intricate and elaborate cake designs: the bigger the challenge the better! I really want to be recognized for the quality and standard of my work. Where can people find you? I can always be found at the studio between 9.30 and 4pm on the first floor above the Pothecary’s (enter through the shop) on 27 Fisherton Street in Salisbury. Everyone is welcome to come and see my creations, discuss any topics they may need help with and view my range of retail stock.
For more: www.thecakeforge.com
Did you have any business training? No, I didn’t have any formal business training. Luckily for me, I have very good family and friends who are all incredibly supportive when it comes to the business side of things. When I need help and advice they’re always there to lend an ear. What’s an average day like at the Cake Forge? My day begins at 9.30am. I usually have several orders or models to work on for customers. I’m always busy making display cakes for the shop as well as for cake fairs. Quite a lot of my day is spent talking to customers 56 I SALISBURY LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

HEALTH
MR MOTIVATOR Helping you keep your New Year resolutions intact is Erak Simsson – the driving force behind Coach Me Trim and Slim.
How did you come to live in Salisbury? I moved down to the south of England back in 1984 when I joined the army. My first posting after basic training was in Tidworth, so Salisbury became my local city. After several posts abroad and in and around the Salisbury area, I eventually settled in Amesbury once I’d left the army. When did you have the idea to launch Coach Me Trim and Slim? I first conceived of the idea of the business in 2004 and officially launched the brand in 2006 and I haven’t looked back. What was your driving motivation to start the business? The two motivating factors that drove to me start the business was a passion for teaching and coaching and a desire to help people to benefit from leading a healthier lifestyle. What kind of people come to you looking for help with their fitness and weight? The kind of people we mainly see are busy professional women aged between 40 – 60 who are not only looking for weight loss, but a lifestyle change that will help them to maintain it once they have achieved their goal.
Do you think that psychological barriers are the biggest health hurdle for most people? Yes, this is a key component of the Coach Me Slim and Trim programme. Most people know about diet and exercise but where they struggle is with mindset. Weight loss can be a real challenge if you’re not in the right place mentally. How do you help clients overcome mental issues around weight loss, sport and fitness? First and foremost, we recognise that everyone who walks through our doors already has a wealth of knowledge and no doubt some experience around becoming healthier and losing weight. Our approach is to coach and train them from where they are currently and take them step-by-step to where they want to be using our Coach Me Slim & Trim programme. The programme meets the National Institute for Health Care and Excellence (NICE) guidelines and we are the only private gym in Salisbury that uses this programme.
MOST PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT EXERCISE BUT WHERE THEY STRUGGLE IS MINSDET
What would you say have been your most significant successes? We’ve had so many successes since we first set up so it is hard to choose. Here are three. We had one client who lost 8 stone 1lb in under 12 months. Another client, a 47-year-old woman lost three stone in weight and went on to compete and place third in a fitness model competition alongside women 10 years her junior. Finally, a 64-year-old client had not only survived cancer but when she started with us she couldn’t walk more than 200 yards before having to sit down due to lower back pain and she was on 30 types of medication a day. After a little over 18 months on the Coach Me Slim and Trim programme she’d lost almost three stone, completed Race for Life, Walk for Wards and the Midnight Walk (10 mile course) all pain free. She is now on less than six types of medication a day. What have been your lows? When my son, Alexander, decided to give up playing tennis. As a professional tennis coach, I was delighted when he said to me at the age of six that he wanted to be great tennis player. In 2014, he became the Wiltshire under 14 champion at the age of 12 and we were on the verge of planning the Lawn Tennis Association Nationals when he said he wanted to focus on football instead. I still miss him tearing around the court but he’s a pretty decent footballer too, so it’s not all bad news.
What’s an average day like for Erak Simsson? I start my day early, with the intensive VIPER programme at 5am that is a bespoke five days a week, 3-month programme for ladies who want to get fit and transform their bodies. This is followed by one-to-one personal training sessions until midday. After lunch I go through updates with my team and connect with clients. Mid-afternoon is dedicated to marketing, business and personal administration. And I always spend one hour a day on personal development via audio books or online programmes. Five pm is family time, followed by more reading and early to bed! What are your ambitions to grow the business? I’m working with 25 local ladies who are determined to make a change to their health and fitness in 2017. I am launching a new 12-month Coach Me Slim & Trim Success Academy. It is a first of its kind and it includes coaching on mindset, nutrition and exercise and is designed to help ladies achieve a healthier, fitter body without having to starve themselves and follow punishing exercise regimes. Are there any significant events coming up? We will be running our new one-to-one and small group free Weight Loss Strategy Sessions throughout the year.

NEWS STORIES Our pick of the most exciting, intriguing or important local business stories happening right now
NEW LEADER FOR BID Amanda Newbery, leader of Salisbury Business Improvement District is stepping down from her voluntary role as its leader from the end of the year. She was one of the founding business leaders of this not-for-profit organisation Amanda Newbery steps down as the leader of BID
and has worked tirelessly to establish the organisation as a driving force to create a dynamic business environment in Salisbury. Amanda says of her departure: “I am immensely proud of BID and what it has achieved in its first two and half years. With Robin McGowan as Chief Executive and supported by a very competent staff team, I feel that it is time to step down and let someone else champion them. I continue to support BID and through my businesses, Pubwatch and as a director of Citywatch, I will still have an involvement in many of BID activities. I want to take time with my own staff and to spend in my own businesses and therefore with the BID in safe hands... this a timely point to step down.” Steve Godwin, business manager for BID adds: “We are immensely grateful to Amanda for all that she has contributed towards BID and in helping us to reach where we are today. Amanda has a passion for the city and has been fantastic in championing our cause.” BID will now decide through its Executive Board the next move in replacing its leader, who is likely to be drawn from one of its members by the spring of 2017. salisburybid.co.uk

Emma and her daughter Eloise before the chop!
THE BIG CHOP
LEGAL Q&A Batt Broadbent’s Lucy Race
On 7 December, Nicky Wyatt hair (also known as the ‘hairdresser with a heart’ for her work with women undergoing chemotherapy) was the site for the Big Chop, a charity event to raise money for breast cancer. Emma McDonald and her 13-year-old daughter, Eloise, both had their luscious long locks chopped off, raising £1,300 for the Stars Appeal. As well as donating money, Emma and Eloise also gave their hair to The Little Princess Trust – a charity that makes real hair wigs for children battling cancer.
FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE
My ex husband and I are divorcing and we have agreed how we will split the finances. I have recently heard that he bought himself a ‘Christmas present’ of a brand-new car and a holiday, but he told me he had no money. Should I be worried? It is very common in the division of finances on divorce that one party is less than truthful about the assets he or she holds. This is a fairly natural reaction as both parties are experiencing emotional upheaval and trying to protect themselves both emotionally and financially. These actions, however, create a feeling of mistrust and can lengthen this already upsetting period unnecessarily. Dividing assets When you are dividing finances in a divorce the court will expect you to have exchanged full financial disclosure between you so that you are aware of each other’s assets and you can be sure that your proposals for division are fair. The court expects divorcing couples to be honest with each other and they will also require you to file a statement with them setting out full details of your assets so that they can also be sure the proposed division is fair. An important stage When you are dealing with paperwork yourselves it can be difficult to urge your ex to disclose details of all of their assets. It is likely that you will both be keen to finalise matters as quickly as possible but it is extremely important not to skip the financial disclosure stage as otherwise you could end up receiving less money than you are entitled to. It is likely you will need a solicitor to draft a financial agreement for you but if you require additional guidance on financial disclosure this is also something that a solicitor can help with, particularly if your ex is not being as honest as they ought to be in disclosing their assets. If you need advice on financial disclosure or dividing finances in general, Jeremy Tier or Lucy Race in our Family Department at Batt Broadbent can help. You can contact them on 01722 411141.

LOCAL FAMILY BUSINESS LOOKS FORWARD TO 2017 Award winning independent estate and letting agent JORDANS is based in the heart of Salisbury city centre opposite St Thomas's church
W
e met with Jordans earlier this year following their gold award at the British Property Awards and we were pleased to once again meet the team after the Christmas break. What does 2017 have in store for Jordans It is this time of year where people begin making decisions about the New Year and we anticipate being very busy meeting new clients and providing valuations for those considering a move. The run-up to Christmas is often quiet although this year we have seen good activity in both our sales and lettings departments.

How would you describe your business? We are a multi-disciplined agent that covers all aspects of residential property, including property management, tenant finding, sales, auctions and block management. We also specialise in the acquisition of land and providing advice on achieving planning consent on residential buildings. Do you consider that being independent is important? In short, yes. We are certain that an independent agent adds real value to the moving process by delivering sound advice, which is based upon decades of experience within the industry. Our teams are not encouraged or paid commission for selling mortgage products or legal services that can make purchasers and sellers feel under pressure. Do you believe that online agents are affecting your business? No. We believe there is space for all types

of offerings within the profession. We know from our client's feedback that they really value having an agent to assist with all of the marketing and legal matters that undoubtedly come up through the process and not just an upload to a website. In truth, it is really frustrating when online agents promise exactly the same service for a much cheaper amount when we know behind the scenes this is far from the case! Do you provide a free valuation service? Yes. We have three experienced valuers that provide a no-obligation valuation service to clients and we are very happy to welcome clients past, present and future to our offices in 2017.

Q&A
E
ntrepreneur Lara Morgan is a locally-based businesswoman. Not originally from this parish, Lara grew up in Hong Kong and went into business at a young age, setting up her own company, Pacific Direct, aged 23 and selling it 17 years later for a cool £20 million. She’s the mother of three children and she now invests in various UK companies – when she’s not public speaking, appearing on The Apprentice or taking part in triathlons. How and when did you come to settle in Salisbury? In April 2007 we bought an Old Rectory in Barford St Martin and we moved the family from Bedfordshire but, actually, I probably only really settled in about two years later as I travelled all the time in those days. Tell us a little about your upbringing I was born in Germany but my early years were spent in Hong Kong. I was schooled in Scotland and educated at an all-girls boarding school half the world away from my parents both of whom ran companies in Hong Kong. My mum’s business was more successful than my dad’s, which went bankrupt. Did you always want to be in business? No, I had no clue what I was going to do after school and I simply needed to get a job as I had to start paying the rent two weeks after leaving school. I was intending to go to university but the freedom of earning money, learning and growing through selling in Hong Kong was the greatest gift other than a wonderful upbringing by parents with old-fashioned values and a superb ethos for leading by example, working hard and putting back into society. I had a truly exceptional childhood and I feel enormously lucky to have grown up in Asia. What’s your greatest strength? Picking great people to work with. …and your biggest weakness? Chocolate. Who has been your greatest inspiration? Possibly my parents, but also partly the Richard Branson story – and then regular injections of inspiration from the terrific entrepreneurs I have listened to over the years, sharing their journeys and experiences from which I always learn.

LARA MORGAN Salisbury’s serial entrepreneur takes time out to talk about what inspires her and how she balances work and family life What has been your biggest challenge in life (business and/or personal)? It is a combination of the juggle between finding a happy balance that ensures that I align my responsibilities as a parent and give my family and my children the time I should to set an example. Being present is an enormous and continual juggle for me, whilst I also invest in companies, try to give back to enterprise, lead by example and also have some time to stay fit and healthy. What was your most exciting business success this year? It is hard to pick one as my wonderful teams have had a record breaking year with their fantastic innovations and unique products. Scentered have launched a high performance range of therapy candles helping you to stop, inhale and reset this Christmas, Gate8 Luggage continues to deliver time saving travel solutions, and Dryrobe keeps both Olympic athletes and outdoor enthusiasts warm. KitBrix launched yet another great kit bag, CityBrix, to organise your sport and work kit.
What do you think of Salisbury as a place to live and raise your children? Salisbury is a beautiful place that has a great deal to offer families and visitors. Some of Salisbury sadly looks worn out and I feel that we as a community are not imaginative or innovational in our approach to all that we can offer through arts, entertainment and enterprising engagement. What’s your favourite thing to do in Salisbury (and surrounding areas)? I like to run off the beaten track, and enjoy cycling around Salisbury. Reeve the Baker is a favourite place to visit, for obvious reasons. What’s your biggest wish for the future? That the whole of the British education system be reviewed, revised, revitalised and re-ignited so that it is fit for purpose for the companies of tomorrow.
