TIME OUT
Relaxing at Bishopstrow’s Halcyon Spa
Unwinding Decision-making is probably best done when we’re not tired, hungover or fractious. So who was the wise guy who decided the post-festive season was the best time to make life-changing resolutions? Instead we should be making ourselves feel restored, rejuvenated and raring to go, which is why we recently checked out the spa at Bishopstrow for a little rest and relaxation (page 31). We’ve also asked Salisbury health and beauty experts for their tips to help us feel good in double quick time. They’ve even been kind enough to share a few tricks of the trade on how to look good in photos (page 22). On page 38, there’s the inside story from the city’s interiors professionals on ways to update our homes in 2018, from extravagance to economical, depending on our budget. Someone who always looks amazing is Emma, Viscountess Weymouth and it turns out she has the energy, brains and business acumen to match. Read about her love of Longleat, food and her family on page 66. And also turn to 18 for our slightly bonkers chat with the wonderful comedian Griff Rhys Jones. Until the next issue – don’t go changing, just yet! Sarah Moolla Editor sarah.moolla@mediaclash.co.uk Tweet us @SalisburyLife

EXTERIOR MOTIVES A sculpture by artist Bridget McCrum is the latest work to grace the Wessex Plinth outside the Salisbury Museum. The elegant bronze Solstice, which went up in November, can be seen until 14 February. The museum’s communications officer Louise Tunnard says, ‘This is the second magnificent sculpture to feature in our plinth programme. It is wonderful to be able to put a contemporary work of this power and presence in front of our 13th century building for all to enjoy.” Adrian Green, the museum’s director, adds, ‘Our temporary exhibitions at the museum have primarily showcased historic art of national and international importance. Our Wessex Plinth extends this programme beyond the walls of the museum and will be an opportunity for us to work with living artists who can respond to our medieval building and our nationally important collections, either with existing pieces or new works of art.’ The continuing programme will feature works from the artists Almuth Tebbenhoff and Johannes von Stumm.

FUNDRAISER
LIGHT OF OUR LIVES A lot of people might brand Piers Morgan a turn off and it would seem a whole host of Christmas lights would agree with them. The Good Morning Britain presenter was in Stockbridge on 1 December to turn on the festive lights with the inspirational Alex Lewis, who lost all four limbs after contracting strep A in 2013, in aid of the Alex Lewis Trust. However, after the huge crowd countdown and an enthusiastic plunging of the plunger, the Hampshire town
stayed in darkness. Piers managed to make ‘light’ of the situation, and him and Alex went on to have dinner at The Greyhound on the Test with the winners of an online auction. Piers later light-heartedly accused his TV co-host Susanna Reid of sabotaging his efforts and making him look “globally ridiculous” citing evidence that, “The Christmas lights were turned on in my house without any problem.” For more: www.alex-lewis.co.uk

BALLROOM BLITZ Two of Strictly Come Dancing’s biggest stars Ian Waite and Kristina Rihanoff are two-stepping their way to help host ‘Smith & Williamson presents Salisbury Does Strictly’ in March. The event at The Stones Hotel is to raise funds for Southern Spinal Injuries Trust and Salisbury Hospice Charity and, along with performing showcase dances, the duo will be sitting on the judges panel for a special Salisbury competition. The organisers are looking for 10 couples to compete, and as Jackie Edmett, Smith & Williamson’s marketing manager, explains, “No previous dance experience is necessary as leading up to the event they will be taught a routine by a local dance teacher. If people want to spectate, tickets are available at £75, and that includes a three course meal, an auction, and an opportunity to vote for the winners.” For more: www.salisburyhospicecharity.org.uk

EDUCATION
BRANCHING OUT The Woodland Trust’s Free Trees for Schools project has been taking root all over Wiltshire. Along with the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, they have been helping pupils from Wilton and Barford Primary School plant their free pack of native saplings from the Trees for Schools programme. Gail Grimes, Wiltshire Wildlife’s Trust education officer says, “We are delighted to be involved in helping
schools make their school grounds more wildlife-friendly, while giving children the opportunity to get stuck into this fantastic project – literally stuck in, with their spades! Those trees they plant will grow alongside the children, providing an everlasting reminder of the wonder of nature and our connection to it.” For more: www.woodlandtrust.org.uk

PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST: KÄTHE KOLLWITZ
Käthe Kollwitz was born 1867 in Königsberg (now Kaliningrad) and studied art at a time when women were still denied access to art academies. Instead, she attended courses at schools for women artists in Berlin and Munich. In 1898, she became famous overnight with the politically charged A Weavers’ Uprising. She strongly believed art could be a force for good in society, and continued to explore powerful themes through her work until her death in 1945.
Her true artistic talent, her technical prowess, her intelligence, her integrity and her humanity, can be seen in this major exhibition which includes the above, Self Portrait looking left, (1901) Lithograph and Etching ©The Trustees of the British Museum. The selection has been curated from the collection of the British Museum and complemented by a small number of loans from a private owner and The Barber Institute of Fine Arts at the University of Birmingham.
Portrait of the Artist: Käthe Kollwitz can be seen at Young Gallery Salisbury, Market Place, Salisbury. www.younggallerysalisbury.co.uk until 11 March 2018. The exhibition is organised in partnership between Ikon and the British Museum and is generously supported by the Dorset Foundation and is accompanied by a fully illustrated publication.

LUST: Who or what do you find yourself lusting after today? A Moroccan carpet online. Silly. I have enough carpets. You can’t start throwing the ones you have away. Just consult the moths. GREED: What should you really be cutting down on? Coffee. It’s the only thing left to me now, though. Sad. And second helpings. Not taking third helpings would be a start. GLUTTONY: What one thing would you happily eat or drink until you burst? Virtually the lot. I do this, once a month, at a thing called The Pudding Club. Mmm. Cream cakes. Bread. Pastry. Puddings. I don’t burst. I do groan. The rest of the time I abstain from all those things. (See coffee.) SLOTH: What should you be putting your back into right now? Writing stuff. I have a hundred projects in my head and don’t really know how to get going. My country

I am losing it just trying to sort it out. What doesn’t? (See coffee.) ENVY: Who are you jealous of? Oh God. Well... God, for starters. Young people mainly. Especially intelligent beautiful successful ones. Sometimes my dog. PRIDE: What to date has been your proudest moment? ew year, new you”. That’s what they say isn’t it? Mind you they say an awful lot of stuff and to be frank I’m not sure they know what they’re talking about. I mean, look at Donald Trump (not literally of course, that would be painful). So when 1 January 2018 rolls around I’m going to very carefully check to see if it is indeed a new me, or is it just the old me with slightly more mince pie stains on my jumper. And a nagging suspicion I was meant to do the washing. That’s not to say my life hasn’t changed in the last few months of 2017 - in fact there’s been quite a few changes. I’ve got a new favourite pizza topping (pulled pork and sweet pepper), discovered that milk is a bad thing to give a baby suffering from a tummy bug (it all just comes out again) and cancelled my subscription to Netflix. Okay, so these aren’t exactly the heady, life inducing changes that make national headlines (although Pizza Topping monthly was VERY interested to hear my new preferences even if you aren’t), but they’re small and important steps on the path of continuous evolution. My food is now a little tastier, my son a little healthier and my wallet a little heavier. But I can appreciate that these changes aren’t for everyone. I can see that the question on everyone’s lips as they read this (I have very good eyesight) is ‘that’s all very well Dan, but what changes could I make?’ So in that vein I’ve picked out five local experiences that might just be worth giving your evolving self a whirl...
1
Creative Writing with Jayne Woodhouse, The Royal George Inn. Jayne is a local author who writes short stories for both children and adults, as well as a range of plays staged around the country. She runs a welcoming and encouraging creative writing course suitable for both beginners and those with a little more experience. So if you have an amazing novel inside you a) see a doctor and b) check out this course. It runs over 8 weeks at the Royal George Inn on Bedwin Street, starting 24 January 2018 at 7pm.

They’re brilliant fun and the Salisbury room is very highly rated. To put this into perspective, when my wife did her first escape room she said it was the best day of her life. I harrumphed loudly and coughed the word ‘wedding’ but she was too busy booking her next experience.

Barnstormers Comedy Club, Salisbury Arts Centre. Hats off to Salisbury Arts Centre to tempt such a great line-up of comedians across from London every month. If you’ve not been to a stand-up comedy gig before then you’re missing out as the experience is intimate and spontaneous.

The Secret Garden, Mill Road. This is an area gem tucked away near the train station – a unique church yard community garden project, with a wildlife, arts and education twist. Whatever you do though, keep it a secret and, oh, too late.

Volunteering at Salisbury Museum. The team at Salisbury Museum have done a brilliant job and you can really see the love, care and attention that has gone into the exhibits and whole experience. They even don’t mind children clambering over everything, pulling it apart, snapping bits off... wait, no, THAT’s why I’m no longer welcome. With over 200 people already volunteering, a major Terry Pratchett exhibition underway and high profile guest speakers every month, now is a great time to get involved. WINTER WELL BEING
PRETTY QUICK Dreading the New Year detox, diet and deprivation lectures? Us too. So SARAH MOOLLA puts down the Quality Street, brushes off the tinsel, and hauls herself off the sofa to seek expert advice on how to recover from the Christmas excesses and feel good, fast!
W
e’re all feeling the slump of those Yuletide indulgences. So as 2018 looms, and before those January blues start biting, we turn to Salisbury’s beauty, hair and well-being professionals for their tips to
help us feel better, faster. First up, we’re loving the feel-good reassurances from Dr Claudia Morley of Morley Aesthetics who suggests we don’t fret, but rejoice instead. “The good news is that an extra few pounds might actually rejuvenate your face,” she explains. “While I’m not advocating we all pile on the weight, but signs of ageing in the face are largely due to loss of volume in the fat pad, and I spend much of my time replacing volume with dermal fillers.” Steph Hartley, a therapist at Lime Tree Spa in Milford Hotel also thinks we shouldn’t be too hard on ourselves. “It’s done now,” she says. “Don’t spend January lamenting your overindulging woes. Focus on a sensible diet and an exercise programme, and remember to reward yourself with pamper sessions.” “Review and renew,” is the advice of Rebecca Morris, practice manager of The Barn Dental Clinic advice. “Ask yourself, where do you want to be and how can you get there? Then make an easy-step plan that’s not too overwhelming.” For those needing instant de-stressing, Aimee Blakemore
marketing associate of the health and well being store, Well Natural has the answer: “We get so many customers feeling a little ‘poisoned’ after Christmas and we often recommend Vogel’s Milk Thistle Complex. Alfred Vogel, one of Switzerland’s best known naturopaths, found the seeds of this very prickly plant contains silymarin, which is able to prevent liver cell damage through stimulating the function and regeneration of liver cells.” Along the same lines of detoxifying, Nikki Spicer, director of Vita Skin Spa, suggests “Go for a simple detox plan, like using a detox tea. Or try detox ampoules as these can be added into your daily routine so easily. The natural active ingredients help to drain and eliminate toxins and purify the body to restore a radiant complexion and a lightness in the body.” “To bust the bloat start your day with lemon and water, and ensure you drink enough water at regular intervals which is always good for you, and will help your body excrete the excess,” advises Elizma Lawrence of Santé et Beauté Face and Body (turn to page 63 for our interview with Elizma. “Then fit in at least 20 minutes of continuous activity to keep the blood flow and circulation going – all guaranteed to make you feel more energised.” Maggie Palmer of Life Balance Health and Wellbeing, is another firm believer in the detoxing properties of simple H20. “Make sure to drink plenty of water to hydrate and help flush out toxins, then treat yourself to a good massage and an energy treatment to give your mind, body and spirit a thorough ‘spring clean’ and reset for the New Year.” Lynne Kirkland, owner of the beauty salon A Touch of Tranquillity, also thinks a massage is the best place to start: “The quickest way to a post-Christmas pick-me-up is a de-stressing 30

WINTER WELL BEING PHOTO FINISH
To help with those sudden selfie New Year moments, our panel of experts share their tips to appearing picture perfect Elizma: Use a spot of your lip gloss or balm on your cheeks for a balmy youthful look. Steph: Use a concealer instead of thick foundation and place it on the shadows of your face – you can find these by tilting your head down whilst looking in the mirror. Aimee: Use the right shades for your skin tone and layer and blend well, so the look is completely natural looking. Add a
touch of blush or bronzer to just below the cheekbones, around the hairline and to the neck and collarbone. Nikki: Use a primer before your makeup. It minimises the appearance of fine lines, mattifies oily shine and gives a silky, smooth, luminous finish. Dr Claudia: The simplest tips are to push your face ever so slightly forwards, don’t face the camera square on, and never say cheese! Dr Joanna: Don’t face the camera straight on, turning your head slightly is more flattering. Have a photo taken whilst seated so you can tilt your face up towards the camera to create a more defined jaw.
Maggie: Conjure up a cherished memory that can’t help but make you happy, your smile will then be sincere and you will naturally radiate and glow. Amie: To avoid that extra chin scenario angle, get the camera above your head and tilt your face down. Jenny: It’s all about good posture, stand tall, pull your shoulders down and relax. Most important though is a natural smile, no grimacing. Debbie: Spritz your hair with shine spray for a healthy look and halo effect. Rebecca: Don’t try too hard, but the best photos are often the ones where we relax. Dana: Find a good photographer.
minute back massage to release all those aches and pains. Follow this with a Neal’s Yard Organic facial to rejuvenate your skin, and you’ll be ready to face the New Year in no time.” Debbie Davidson, owner of the hair salon The Colour Rooms, suggests you spend your Christmas money, “investing in a highquality and decent hair brush. It might cost just a few pounds more but the results are instantly visible.” Getting out there and tackling those January blues head on is Jenny Mears, physiotherapist at Sarum Physiotherapy Centre, advice, “Wrap up warm and take walk in the local park. Go with friends, family or borrow a dog. You’ll instantly feel better you’ve made the effort.” Walking is also the top tip of complementary therapist Suzanne Rawle who says. “It’s so easy to want to curl up and hibernate in the darker colder months, but try to get outdoors, as sunshine not only gives your skin essential vitamin D, but helps your natural radiance shine through.” Valerie Storm of Storm Physiotherapy also extols the virtues of taking in fresh air, along with staying hydrated. “Walking is flexible, easy, beneficial straightaway and better still, it’s free! As is drinking water!” Celia García-Rubio founder of Scent&Colour (turn to page 61 for our interview with Celia) agrees, “It is great to enjoy some excesses every now and then, but once it’s over, we must get back into a routine and get about as soon as possible.” A thought echoed by Amie Richmond, “Christmas is a time of indulgence but know the difference between having a bit of what you fancy and having a full-on binge. If you make it your New Year’s resolution to keep active, by the time next Christmas comes round, you’ll already be in the habit and you won’t feel so bad.” It’s all about balance for GP and doctor of cosmetic medicine Dr Joanna Lovatt, as well, who says, “Be mindful of what you have had, and try and balance it out over the course of a few days. So w www.mediaclash.co.uk I SALISBURY LIFE I 23
WINTER WELL BEING one big meal is counteracted with a small healthy breakfast and lunch the following day.” Dana Burton, owner of vegan and ethical independent retailer, Goodfayre, believes kickstarting your 2018 with Veganuary could be just the tonic. “It’s a simple reevaluation of your food by going vegan for just one month, that is both mentally stimulating and physically rewarding.”
VIVA LA RESOLUTIONS!
While we had their attention, we then asked our experts what our 2018 beauty and health resolutions should be… Dr Joanna’s advice for the New Year is, “one you’ll have heard of, but I bet you never do it! Drink two litres of water a day. It will help your skin, reduce your calorie intake because it staves off hunger and will make you feel all round better about yourself.” Dr Claudia Morley believes we should all resolve to ensure our skincare products are ethical and natural. “As a doctor I always use medical grade products; however, I’m shocked at how many big brands still test on animals. I recommend starting with iS Clinical, not only is it medical grade but it is botanically derived, not tested on animals and coveted by many A-list celebrities.” The suggestion of purifying our skin care regime was echoed by many of our panel, including Celia, “Industrial cosmetics contain petroleum derivatives, silicones, paraffin and many other substances that make them cheap

WINTER WELL BEING MANE ATTRACTION Hair stylist and proprietor of Wendy Stevens Salisbury shares her ten tips to save parched and neglected winter hair 1 Jumpers, scarves, gloves and beanies can make hair static and frizzy. Reduce this by washing your hair in lukewarm water and use a leave-in conditioner. 2 Look for hats that are silk or satin-lined to reduce friction that can cause split ends. 3 At night hydrate hair with an oil or serum – remember to use an old pillowcase! 4 Always give your hair a final rinse in cold water to help close and seal the hair cuticles. 5 Never rub your hair dry with a towel as the friction will cause damage. 6 Never put your hair up while damp as this can cause breakage and split ends. 7 When it comes to drying use a cool setting and keep the hairdryer 15cms from your hair. 8 Limit the amount of times you use damaging heated styling tools and master the art of braids, buns, twists and ponytails. 9 Invest in a humidifier. When the heating is on, the air becomes very dry, which dries out your hair and skin. 10 To limit scalp irritation caused by central heating, mix a few teaspoons of warmed coconut oil with a tablespoon of lemon juice. Massage into your scalp and leave for 20-30 minutes before shampooing out.
but unhealthy. Our skin absorbs 75 per cent of what we apply on it, which ends up in our bloodstream, so go natural in 2018. You’ll feel the benefits immediately.” And as Rebecca Morris succinctly puts it, “Go back to the roots of nature, and use only the purest ingredients. And of course, always stay hydrated and get your rest.” “Eat a rainbow of fruit and vegetables to ensure you are getting all the nutrition your body needs, and get all the sleep your body asks of you” advises Suzanne Rawle. And self-nurture in 2018 is a suggestion by Maggie Palmer, “Set aside a chunk of time for yourself each week to deeply appreciate your body and all it does to support you.” Body Fabulous’s Amie Richmond also thinks we should be kinder to ourselves, “If you look in the mirror and have harsh thoughts about yourself, then stop and think, would you say the same thing out loud to someone you loved?” Sarum Physiotherapy Centre’s Jenny backs this up and adds, “Schedule in that time to do something you love – whether this is a regular meet up with friends, a round of golf, or a swim – make it a habit.” Lynne Kirkland asks that we don’t feel guilty about having beauty treatments. “A 30 minute CACI Hydratone Facial will have you feeling and looking beautifully hydrated, revitalized and nourished. A simple boost like that can have far-reaching effects.” “Eyebrows and eyelashes frame the face and having these tinted and your brows shaped, can takes years off the face,” reveals Elizma Lawrence. “A once a week sea salt and olive oil or coconut oil scrub, with a drop of essential oil, provides a youthful glow on the body.” w

Valerie Storm also sings the praises of oil, “Buy a tub of coconut oil – it’s good for everything, cooking, in your hair, as a moisturiser – and the benefits are amazing.” Nikki of Vita Skin Spa urges us to start a spring clean, “Ditch expired make-up older than six months to a year. Using old make-up will play havoc on your skin. Also clean your make-up brushes. What’s the point of buying gorgeous new products and then dipping in brushes covered in bacteria and dust?” While Lime Tree Spa’s Steph says to, “increase the moisture in your skin and add a serum into your skincare routine. And also get to know your skin properly and then you’ll know the right products to buy and not waste money.” Aimee of Well Natural also recommends a serum as part of our 2018 beauty regime, “Look for a serum containing hyaluronic acid. Just a single gram can hold up to six litres of water which means it instantly hydrates skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.” The beauty tip from The Colour Rooms’ Debbie is “start to incorporate a hair mask into your routine – one of my favourites is The Quick Fix, which hydrates and smooths hair in no time.” But before all the above, Goodfayre’s Dana insists true beauty has to start from within. “Love yourself more,” she explains, “When we start loving ourselves more, we can share that love with others and become more compassionate people who care about the planet, and everything on the planet.”

here is an innovative nonsurgical and drug-free way to help knee pain, back pain and other musculoskeletal disorders – AposTherapy®. The AposTherapy® treatment was developed by orthopaedic doctors and is based around a unique individually-adjusted device that is worn on the feet for around an hour a day whilst going about normal daily activities. This makes the AposTherapy® treatment programme an effective and highly convenient option. Over 50,000 patients have already been treated worldwide. The AposTherapy® treatment programme brings your body into optimal alignment, thus reducing the pressure and strain on painful areas in the joint. As you walk, it stimulates and retrains your muscles, ultimately re-educating your body to adopt a corrected and less painful walking style, even when you are not wearing the device. The personalised treatment re-educates the brain and muscles to work correctly in order to provide better joint stability and re-establish a more symmetrical walking pattern, leading to lasting pain lasting pain relief and improved function. Unique benefits of AposTherapy® •Non-surgical and drug-free • Highly effective for reduction in pain, improvement in function and quality of life •Clinically proven for lasting pain relief •Addresses the root cause of your condition • Highly convenient and fits easily into your daily routine •Personalised to your specific needs •On-going care for optimal results Who is suitable for treatment? Patients with: •Knee osteoarthritis
sTORM PhYSIO is a trusted physiotherapy practice in the centre of Salisbury. Owner, VALERIe storm, tells us how AposTherapy® can benefit your body •Chronic knee pain •Torn meniscus •Knee ligament damage •Patello-femoral pain (anterior knee pain) •Rehabilitation following knee surgery •Lower back pain The story of a knee by Liz Latter "Having grown up active and sporty, I always took my joints for granted. I’d managed a couple of knee injuries playing hockey and skiing but a bit of rest and elevation had always sorted things out. Slowly my right knee became more of a problem and our go-to pastime of walking became more and more uncomfortable. By my late 40s I’d had an operation on my meniscus and cruciate ligament. Each operation brought me some relief but it was relatively short lived and I was living the reality of daily discomfort that impacted my life with the occasional bout of extreme pain thrown in. I moved to Salisbury in 2013 and a friend recommended Storm Physio to me. From the first visit Valerie Storm has worked wonders with my knee but the relentless decline – osteoarthritis – meant she was battling a rising tide. Having seen the consultant surgeon at Salisbury hospital and been told that another arthroscopy could buy, hopefully, a couple of years before a full knee replacement, was my only option. The consultant could not guarantee that it would work or, if it did work, how long it would hold for. Returning to Valerie with my MRI notes for her opinion, she mentioned AposTherapy®. I went straight home, did some Googling and got back in touch with Valerie asking to be considered as an AposTherapy® patient if she went ahead. It's now three months on, and it’s so hard
to describe the transformation. From the moment, during the first assessment, when I tried the boots and my whole gait altered, to now, the pain in my knee has just about disappeared. I can walk again, easily, without thinking about the movement, without worrying about the pain – it is back to being an instinctive action. I can’t believe, given the transformation I have had, that I won’t get a good few years benefit from the shoes. In that time hopefully medical science will continue to improve so if I ever have to have a knee replacement, it will be a better operation than I could ever expect now. And of course, post-op I will still have my AposTherapy® shoes to help with my recovery." Book in for your free consultation In order to establish if AposTherapy® is the right treatment for you, the initial clinical assessment is completely free of charge. Valerie is a specially-trained Chartered Physiotherapist who will spend about an hour with you. At your consultation, you will find out in little more than one hour, if your knee pain could be reduced by this personalised treatment, giving you a more active and less painful life. SL

EASY GOING SARAH MOOLLA takes some time out at The Halcyon Spa in Bishopstrow Hotel
I
t’s one of those days I need to be transported far from the madding crowd: never-ending Christmas shopping lists, work deadlines, school appointments, lightweight family bickering and heavyweight social do’s. I’m pretty stress scrunched at the moment. My back and shoulders have more knots than a gnarly, aged, oak tree and my skin is more congested than the A36 at rush hour. On top of this I’m pretty sure this sniff is going to develop into a cold. Luckily for me today’s the day I’m due to call into The Halcyon Spa at Bishopstrow Hotel for a treatment. “Restore your well-being and escape to one of the finest spa hotels Wiltshire has to offer,” says the blurb. So I have definitely come to the right place then. Emily, my softly spoken and welcoming therapist, recommends a shoulder and back massage using the lavender and camomile de-stress massage oil first. To be honest if she’d suggested a quick snooze in the invitingly soothing treatment room, I’d have agreed. She asks me if I’d like firm, medium or light pressure. I slightly worry over this. To ask for medium or firm feels like
I’m demanding she work harder and she’ll inwardly sigh thinking, “We’ve got a right diva here.” However Emily is so lovely and reassuring, even if she does think that, she doesn’t let it show. The medium pressure is perfect: it’s like Emily has found each one of the hard to reach nodules of tension in my neck and is smoothing them out individually. The facial that follows is an Elemis Booster Facial that begins with camomile cleanser and apricot toner, a pro-collagen eye renewal gel and a hydra boost day cream. It feels like a simple, back-to-basics treatment and is all the more relaxing for that. The effects are almost instant, I feel calmer but also rejuvenated and almost raring to go. But not quite yet. Before heading off to face the storm of the rest of my chores, I decide to have lunch in the hotel part of Bishopstrow. I opt for a bowl of Thai butternut squash soup with four types of bread, all for about the same price as a chain sandwich would’ve cost, but better still, I get to drink in the 26 acres of surrounding green space framed perfectly by a crisp winter day. Now that is priceless. It’s been a very pleasing and beneficial couple of hours, and do you know what? I think that spicy soup has shifted that sniffle…

LUXE, LESS, and LIVE a LITTLE Out with the old, in with the new – it’s time to refresh your home interiors. We’ve asked Salisbury interiors experts for three options to help us update, upgrade or go upmarket with our home style in 2018 By Sa r a h Mool l a

will add a point of interest– a textured back could be used to highlight cushions placed on the bed and tie the look beautifully. Ira Blake, lighting designer of Light My Space: Switch out any old-style fluorescent bulbs for LEDs and invest in higher quality bulbs that will last up to 10 years. Clean or replace old lamp shades and fittings. Hania Southwell, senior designer at at.twenty.one interiors: Change your kitchen doors for a cost effective but striking and immediate transformation.
THE MID-RANGE BUDGET GUIDE
THE MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK GUIDE
If you’re feeling the pinch but your faded furnishings are in need of a little refresh Clarissa Reilly of Digger & Mojo: Declutter – it costs nothing and will bring space and light into your home. Paint the niches of book shelves and add a jolly throw to a worn out sofa. Phil Gosden, the director of Salisbury Tile Store: Look to the hub of the house, i.e the kitchen. Here you could change the wall tiles and achieve an amazing effect for under £100. Debbie Norton from Pure Comfort: Adding an accent of colour to any room with items such as cushions, lampshades, throws, duvet covers is a quick, simple and affordable way to refresh a look. Keep to the same colour spectrum, otherwise if too many colours are used, it can look overly cluttered. Jemma Page, director and co-founder of Orchid: Clear away every single accessory and then put back only those that are true favourites, and even then consider a different location. Think seasonal as well – this time of year a few dotted around tea lights look amazing. Laura Thomas, bathroom designer at Harlequin Bathrooms of Salisbury: Replacing a tap, fitting a lit mirror, a new bathroom cabinet or even changing floor, with a something like Quickstep Vinyl which is nowhere near as costly as people think, can make a dramatic difference to an existing suite. Elaine Deeks, director of A Box of Tricks: Never underestimate the power of a fresh lick of paint is to change the mood of any space. Jo Philips, managing director of Custom Creations: Adding a headboard to a bedroom
Above: Updating your fireplace, like this from Dingham’s Fireplaces can make a world of difference to the look of your home; adding soft furnishings to your bedroom, such as a textured headboard can tie your look together as suggested by Custom Creations
A little cash to play with to cheer up the chintz Digger & Mojo’s Clarissa: Hire a professional to do the painting, and have fun choosing fabric to update your kitchen or dining room furniture to match – my tip for 2018 is Fermoie linens printed in Marlborough. Reupholster an antique chaise longue for the master bedroom in a sexy rock croc velvet. Salisbury Tile Store’s Phil: People are moving away from limestone floors and going for Moorish encaustic tiles. These in the hallway and downstairs toilet is very on trend, looks stunning, and prices start at just £400. Pure Comfort’s Debbie: You can’t go wrong with a statement mirror – it adds light to a dark corner or reflect lights out to give a different feel to the room. Orchid’s Jemma: Invest in a few metallic pieces, such as a nest of table, which is very much in vogue and also looks set to stay for a while. w

THREE THINGS IN A ROOM THAT OFTEN COST THE MOST ARE
FLOORING, FURNITURE AND WINDOW DRESSING
The beauty is they’re neutral and work well with any colour scheme. Dinghams Fireplaces director, David Hardingham: You’ll never regret putting in a wood burning stove and if you don’t have a chimney don’t worry, there are plenty of stoves that can be installed with an insulated twin wall flue system including the Scan 66. Harlequin Bathrooms’ Laura: The new furniture ranges from Laufen offer practical wall hung storage with timeless style and high quality finish. A Box of Tricks’ Elaine: Choose some interesting pendants and lamps that reflect the style you like. Make sure they give out the right amount of light for the areas you need to show off and use. Custom Creations’ Jo: Because TV and media units are usually the focus of a living area, a custom made piece to hide all the boxes, wires and DVDs will look outstanding. Light My Space’s Ira: Consider adding and combining light sources to increase your choice of lighting type, style, controllability and visual temperature, and choose a style theme that works for all the lumières – including switches and sockets. at.twenty.one interiors’ Hania: keeping your existing appliances and laminate worktops will significantly reduce the cost replacing a tired kitchen.
THE BREAK THE BANK GUIDE
This is the big one, where décor get decadent Digger & Mojo’s Clarissa: Start with professional design help – money invested in good advice is never wasted. Look at knocking down a wall or two to create an extended entertaining hub. 40 I SALISBURY LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

Salisbury Tile Store’s Phil: Install bi fold doors and running tiles, ideally porcelain (polished indoors and matt outdoors) through the entire downstairs of the house and out onto the patio, giving an indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Pure Comfort’s Debbie: Three things in a room that often cost the most are flooring, furniture and window dressing. Keep two of these neutral and add the wow factor with the third. An opulent statement sofa is a great way to do this. A Box of Tricks’ Elaine: Once the redecoration is done, look at ramping up the interest with investment artwork and huge mirrors. Orchid’s Jemma: A large conservatory, glass extension, or bigger windows are all wonderful at bringing the outside in. Otherwise look at what is outside the window in terms of colour, shape and size and see what can be replicated inside. Dinghams Fireplaces’ David: Go for the open fire effect without the hassle with a gas fire that uses advanced technology with ultra-lifelike logs to create a truly stunning gas flame effect that is almost indistinguishable from a real wood burning fire. Harlequin Bathrooms’ Laura: Use an in-house design service and a go for a luxury brand. We are particularly excited about the new St James launch of specialist finishes such as brushed brass and copper showers, taps and accessories. Light My Space’s Ira: Invest in sculptural lumières that give you joy, and garden lighting to create stunning views all year round. Custom Creations’ Jo: Commissioning a piece of furniture made to display your personal photos creates a unique and exciting focus to your home. at.twenty.one interiors’ Hania: Go for the full service from design to completion and let the experts take the stress.

hen is a bathroom not just a bathroom? This isn’t the start of some joke found in a cracker over the festive season. This is what pops into your head when you enter Harlequin Bathrooms of Salisbury. The unassuming trading estate exterior of their tucked away showroom does not prepare your for their interior. It’s an Alice down the rabbit hole moment – it’s tardis-like, space-age and a bit of showstopper. You’re propelled into a world where baths can play music and showers change colours, where gorgeous gadgets and bathroom gizmos sit comfortably alongside the traditional, and the luxe. Upstairs is like an actual bathroom show. The huge floor space is laid out with every style, fashion and colour you’ve dreamt off. And yet it’s all still a work is progress according to director Matt Perry. “We have so many amazing 42 I SALISBURY LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk
plans for each section, which we hope to have finished by April.” Their tucked away location is no barrier it would seem to people finding them – they’ve been operating from here for more than 30 years, and it’s in this amazing customer base Harlequin Bathrooms Salisbury really prove themselves to be big players. “My father founded the original Harlequin Bathrooms back in the 1980s,” explains owner Kristy Perry, Matt’s wife. “When he retired three years ago, Harlequin Bathrooms of Salisbury was set up as a replacement. “I am very lucky that my father had built such a strong business, and also the fact that he has been there for us every step of the way to support and give advice. We frequently call him in Spain, where he now lives, for problem solving and advice on parts. He has the memory of an elephant and seems to remember, not only the customers and their addresses, but what he

supplied them even down to the relevant spare parts they will need!” Along with her father, Kristy name checks the whole team who have been instrumental in this continued success. “Laura, our wonderful and organised designer who has been with me since the very beginning. TOTAL SKIN HEALTH MORLEY AESthetics is a professional cosmetic medicine clinic. Owner and GP, DR CLAUDIA MORLEY, shares her knowledge on achieving a natural look
G
P and renowned Facial Aesthetician Dr Claudia Morley at Morley Aesthetics has earned a large and loyal following for her expert dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections, and the subtle, natural look she creates for her many happy clients. “I have been working with injectables for the past nine years,” says Dr Morley, “and this experience has shown me that it’s not just about them – it’s about optimizing total skin health.” So having spent the last year researching the best medical skin treatments available Dr Morley now offers a whole range of these at her clinic, with the help of her aesthetic practitioner colleague and skin expert, Emma Waker. Dr Morley's aim is to ensure her clients have a completely natural look, ‘Often it’s about looking fresher and healthier, rather than trying to eliminate every line. I absolutely hate the plastic look, over-inflated lips and cheeks, that we sadly see so much of now. That is not what I am about." Sagging lower face and jowls These are common causes for complaint for many people but it’s not necessary to go under the knife. Morley Aesthetics offers Thread Lifts, performed by experienced GP and ophthalmologist Dr Crispin Malpas, who has a clinical background in eye surgery (as well as being Claudia’s husband!) Often referred to as the ‘Lunchtime Face Lift” due to its minimal downtime, it involves the insertion of a thread under the skin via a very fine needle. The thread has anchor points that hold the tissue and provides lifting when tensioned, it’s very effective on a sagging jawline. More details are on the Morley Aesthetics website.
Skin tightening After heavily researching all the different skin tightening technologies in the cosmetic industry, the 3D SkinMed machine stood out above the rest in terms of clinical evidence of efficacy and results. It uses High Intensity Ultrasound – HIFU (similar to Ultherapy) to stimulate the deep support layers of the skin to produce collagen, resulting in lifting and firming of the skin. It is particularly useful around the lower face, redefining and tightening the jawline. “We like performing this treatment in combination with the Thread Lift for the ultimate facelift. However, it can be effective on its own and the big advantages are that it’s a single treatment, it’s non-invasive so no needles, and no downtime.”
Before
After
Fine lines The 3D SkinMed also uses radiofrequency that plumps the skin and smooths fine lines. It targets the dermal layer in the skin, stimulating collagen and tightening the skin. It’s also great for the skin in the neck and chest area, improving fine lines and crepiness. Once again no needles or downtime make it an attractive option. Deep lines Dr Morley has become an expert in antiwrinkle injections and dermal fillers. Using advanced techniques she can improve virtually any line, but advocates looking at the face as a whole rather than focusing on individual lines. “The contours and proportions of the face are so important and an experienced injector can subtly change these using dermal fillers to make a face more beautiful.” One of her favourite treatments is to eliminate the downturned mouth and frown lines, which instantly makes the face – look and feel – happy again.
Skin health and rejuvenation Dr Morley recommends ‘iS Clinical’, the skincare range beloved of celebrities, famous for its ‘Fire & Ice’ resurfacing treatment – a rejuvenating treatment that bridges the gap between a facial and a medical peel, with no downtime. The topselling treatment at the Four Seasons, Beverley Hills, it leaves the skin brighter, clearer and smoother. "These products are unique in that they’re medical grade but also 96 per cent botanical and not tested on animals like so many are." The Déesse LED phototherapy mask is another favourite of celebrities, and has five clinically proven wavelengths that tackle different problems including acne and pigmentation as well as anti-ageing, which is due to collagen stimulation. It is completely safe and pain-free with no downtime and can be combined with other treatments such as the Fire & Ice. Dr Claudia Morley has a clinic in Salisbury and Farnham village and affordable payment plans are available.* SL

Pete’s food has helped win awards
The Swan Enford has been celebrating three successful years in business. It scooped The Pub & Bar Magazine Award for Wiltshire Pub of the Year earlier this year, received CAMRA recognition for its pursuit of fine ales and hosted its successful beer festival Swanfest in August – all while work has been going on to restore the Grade II building. Emma Jeffries, who co-owns the Pewsey business with her husband, head chef Pete, explains, “We have just finished installing our new kitchen with a £40,000 makeover – this is the final step in our
refurbishment since taking on the pub three years ago. “We are an unusual entity; the building is owned by the villagers and we own the business. We are not a big chain or multiple site operator – simply Pete and I along with 20 local staff working hard to provide an outstanding pub for our community. I also still work as a headteacher in Hampshire, but help out both behind the bar and with the admin. “Staying at the heart of the village is very important to us.” For more: www.theswanenford.co.uk

FOOD
The Angel Inn Heytesbury Clare Macnaughton is welcomed at the inn where the Pilgrim Fathers once feasted, and finds a host of heavenly dishes thanks to the wondrous skills of Ross Chappell
T
he Angel Inn Heytesbury has evolved considerably since the Pilgrim Fathers popped in, in 1620, on their journey to board the Mayflower in Plymouth. Indeed, it has a long 35-year history as a great food destination pub. In fact, I worked there in the mid 1980s as a pot washer and occasional waitress when Cordon Bleu chef, Sue Smith, put The Angel Inn on the map as reliable drinkers pub, which served good wholesome food. In more recent times, the pub was celebrated for its food and warm atmosphere and it’s recent closure caused great distress amongst the Wylye Valley locals. Now it has been taken over by Ross Chappell of mobile cocktail bar company, Slick Steel Events, who heralds originally from Salisbury. Ross and his team have an undertaken a complete refurbishment of the pub and created a spacious blend of country, with a touch of urban industrial robustness, for dog friendly dining. There is now no distinction between the restaurant and the bar but instead a balance between the spaces, which caters for your Friday night bar dweller, but at the same time your country dog walker as well as your quiet diner. Ross has simply and elegantly created space for all. With a commitment to continuing the pub’s reputation as a food destination gastro pub, Ross has created a menu, which combines pub classics with an altogether more adventurous cuisine. To start, I have the pan seared pigeon breast with

celeriac purée, parsnip crisps and port and blackberry jus, whilst my lunch date enjoys the salt and pepper squid, with a mango, chilli and tomato salsa.’ Both are delightful; expertly cooked and beautifully presented on the plate. The palate of each dish acutely combines a blend of crispness and flavour. I sample the slow cooked lamb shank served with a bed of creamy mashed potato with seasonal veg and a minted jus as my main course. The lamb shank is presented off the bone and the portion size is sufficient enough to be replete but not stuffed. My date loves their 10oz local ribeye steak with chargrilled, triple cook chips, a grilled tomato and Portobello mushroom; hearty and filling, with a melt in the mouth steak cooked to a medium rare perfection. Around me I can see ample servings of lunchtime pub grub on wooden chopping boards in the guise of burgers and fish and chips. To finish, I opt for the soft chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream. This is cooked to order and takes an extra 20 minutes, but it’s well worth it. The perfectly formed pudding oozes unctuous warm chocolate on cutting and it is indeed one to try for all chocaholics and puddingistas. My date enjoys a crunchy, creamy vanilla crème brulèè with shortbread. Good, but not as amazing as the fondant – but then few things in life are! We wash the meal down with soft, smooth and fruity 2016 San Tuario Malbec from the Mendoza region of Argentina, which compliments the lamb and steak nicely. Ross has been working in the food and drink business for over a decade now and is committed to quality, even with his wife imminently due to give birth. So, the Angel Inn is also being re-born, with Ross firmly at the helm of his new exciting venture and with a new baby on the way he is sure to have his hands full. He is, however, continuing with aplomb the pub’s legacy of being one of the most popular gastro pubs in the Wylye Valley.

Also launched at the museum on 25 November was Paul Kidby’s latest book Terry Pratchett’s Discworld Imaginarium, which include 40 pieces of never-beforeseen art. More than 600 people attended, while Paul and Rob signed books solidly for five hours. The Salisbury Waterstones sold out of copies and the museum shop reported their best day ever of trading. However the issue is one that does not go away, and we are hoping that the Salisbury community will continue their generous donations in to the New Year. “There a number of events people
can lend their support to: Homelessness Sunday is on 28 January when churches nationwide will unite to raise awareness and send a message to policy makers in Britain, the fifth richest economy in world, no one should be without a home that meets their needs. “There’s also The BIG Sleep at Salisbury Cathedral Goes Woof on the night of 2 February, and this time Salisbury Cathedral are allowing 30 well behaved dogs to join their well behaved owners to keep them company through this wintery night.” For more: www.alabare.co.uk

Longleat keeper Sami Cowie waits patiently for the zebras to reach their crossing
PELICANS NEED NOT APPLY Longleat Safari Park recently filled its role for a zebra crossing lollipop person. The job is to help cope with high visitor numbers over the winter months. The zebra crossing will provide people with a manned crossing point from the car park into the East Africa Village which overlooks the African Reserve home to wildebeest, ostriches, giraffe and a herd of Grant’s zebra. “Ironically our herd of zebra are actually extremely good at road crossing, says keeper Ryan Hockley. “They are used to motor vehicles travelling through their spacious enclosure and they’ve become model pedestrians.” For more: www.longleat.co.uk
TRETHOWANS Why does the buyer raise enquiries? Upon receipt of the contract and supporting documentation, the buyer’s solicitor will raise a list of questions should any further information be required. These questions will be about a range of issues including past disputes, the property’s boundaries, utilities, contents included in the sale, planning constraints and permissions, rights of way, and restrictive covenants.
LEGAL Q&A MARIANA CRAWFORD, solicitor at Trethowans answers questions about selling your home. First a look at what happens when contracts are exchanged
Who answers these questions? The seller’s solicitor must answer these enquiries within a reasonable time and will need the seller’s help to answer them. During the buyer’s enquiries they may discover an issue with the property that could cause them a problem once they have bought the property, such as a restrictive covenant. The solicitors will use a solution-based approach to ensure any future risks will be minimised, usually by offering indemnity insurance as a last resort. What does it mean when my solicitor talks about “exchanging contracts”?
‘Exchange’ occurs when both the buyer and the seller are happy with the draft contract, are ready to make the agreement between them legally binding, and have agreed a date for completion. The solicitors for both parties will make sure they have identical copies of the contract and will get their client to sign their copy. The contracts are then “exchanged” during a telephone call between the solicitors to confirm the time when contract becomes binding. The seller’s solicitor will receive the deposit from the buyer’s solicitor on exchange. Can there be later amendments? No change to the agreement or withdrawal is now possible without financial penalties for both parties. After exchange the seller’s solicitor will receive the draft transfer document from the buyer’s solicitor. This document transfers the title from the seller to the buyer. Once the parties’ solicitors have agreed on a draft, the buyer and seller will need to sign it. For more: Trethowans; tel: 01722 426916; www.trethowans.com

RETAIL
SCENT&COLOUR Celia García-Rubio is the founder of Scent&Colour which matches fragrances using essential oils, as well offering handmade bath products. All the range is vegan, eco-friendly, cruelty-free and fairly traded. Here she talks about being asked to recreate the aroma of books and her plans to franchise the business… Tell us a little about your upbringing… I was born in Zaragoza, a gorgeous city in the North of Spain. I am the oldest of three and the only girl. I have also lived in Dublin, Canada, Sweden, London and of course, Salisbury. My mother always said that having a global vision is the way forward and she educated my brothers and me with that in mind. What were you like as a child? I’ve always been curious, tenacious and knew from an early age I wanted to start up my own company so I moved to Madrid when I was 18 to study at the best business school in Spain. How did you end up in the West Country? My partner and I began the business when we were still at university together in Canada. We tested the market by selling online, and then we came to Salisbury because of my partner”s job. Now it is our home and the start of a dream! What is the inspiration for Scent&Colour? It is born from a well-established family company that has been producing natural cosmetics for more than 12 years and helping many entrepreneurs to set up their own businesses selling these products. The team is formed by a chemist, who creates all the formulations and takes care of the technical documents and regulations, a product designer, who makes everything look amazing, the production team, who make the magic happen and myself, in charge of the expansion in Europe.
Tell us about the possibility of franchising Scent&Colour So many visitors have commented they would love to have a Scent&Colour in their towns because it is a fantastic idea. I want to make that happen. We have an expansion project to open new perfume studios. Our experience and the product success have enabled us to develop a franchise business model. It is a very affordable and profitable business for those entrepreneurs who feel identified with our values. What are those values? Our core belief is Scent&Colour will become the reference brand for the alternative perfume which are made with natural ingredients, totally vegan and environmentally friendly. The important part for us is finding the right people: entrepreneurs with great attitude, initiative, honesty and the desire to work hard. We are not charging any royalties or commissions.
WE OFFER THE HIGHEST QUALITY
PERFUMES
AT A FRACTION OF THE BRAND PRICE
Why is Scent&Colour so important to you as a vision? I have the conviction that quality perfume should be within reach of anyone. As a company we believe in fair, responsible manufacturing and handmade production with natural formulas and the respect for the planet. ...and for the consumer? Fragrances help you show your character and your personality. We want to allow everyone to do so by offering the highest quality perfumes at a fraction of the brand price.
If someone was interested, where would they start? We have a section on our website dedicated to the franchise opportunity. They can contact us and we will give them more information about the brand, the philosophy and the products. What are your scent predictions for 2018? We are continuously creating and matching the latest scents on the market so our customers can always find the natural alternatives, and we’ve noticed an increase in requests for unisex fragrances.
Have you made any unusual requests? Yes, and I love challenge! My favourites have been: ‘I want to smell like my grandmother when she was young.’ ‘I would like something floral, but not too floral.’ ‘My favourite perfume comes in a red bottle.’ And the best yet, ‘I would like to smell like a new book.’

BEAUTY
ELIZMA LAWRENCE Elizma Lawrence is the owner and therapist of the health and beauty studio, Santé et Beauté Face and Body. Here she talks about her South African upbringing, her world wide travel and her inspiring belief that in health, there is beauty…
Tell us a little about your upbringing? My parents were working class, self employed, part of a farming community in the Stellenbosch area of South Africa. My late father was an irrigation engineer supplying water pump systems for some of the big wineries and vegetable farms in Cape Town and my late mother was a homemaker, businesswoman and caterer. Myself and my older brother lived a simple life with not much in the sense of luxuries, but we never wanted for anything either, learning about appreciating life, nature and a sense of family. Where else have you lived? I worked on board luxury cruise ships and also did a six-month stint on board super yachts in Monaco and Palm Beach with my husband. I’m very fortunate that my work has taken me all over the world including Australia, Asia, China, North Africa, the Mediterranean, America, Britain and the Channel Islands. What other work are you trained in? In South Africa and the USA I worked hand in hand with dermatologists, cosmetic surgeons, doctors and medical professionals. How did you end up in the West Country? Salisbury was originally part of a five-year plan, and after three years in, we’ve decided this is where we want to settle, especially now that we have the most beautiful 16-month-old little girl. My lovely husband, who is Cornish, has also found his dream job as a marine pilot in Southampton.
What are the positives you’ve experienced in these first four years? Each and every client that books in makes me so happy; to be allowed to enter their personal space, it’s quite special and humbling. And then they see and feel a change in their skin and health - it reminds me I’m doing something right. A real high for me was in the first month, my business broke even - that made me feel very grown up! …and any negatives? Only that while the favourite part of my job is being in the treatment room, it is actually only a small area of the work. There are a lot of extra hours that have to be put in behind the scenes to keep a small business running, and that has an impact financially, personally, physically and mentally.
THE
SERVICES
I OFFER ARE THE MISSING LINK BETWEEN
MEDICAL
RECOVERY AND RESTORATIVE
THERAPY
Tell us a little about Santé et Beauté – what is the company’s background and inspiration? I found the services I could offer were the missing link between medical recovery and restorative therapy - I believe there is a natural way to do enhancement therapy without it costing a fortune or by going under the knife. So when did you first set up? September 2013 – it was two weeks after getting married when I announced to my husband I’d love to start my own business. He has been so supportive and I think believed more in me than I did in myself.
Does Santé et Beauté have a philosophy to its approach? The name Santé et Beauté means: to health and beauty of the face and body - in health there is beauty. I’m not interested in Santé et Beauté being fashionista or cool in any way, but for those who might have a skin or body concern and want helpful guidance. Is there someone in business that you admire and try learn from? When it comes to setting up in business, people like Walt Disney, Lord Sugar, Richard Branson, my husband and my parents, gave me the inquisitiveness and self-confidence to give it a try.
What are your plans for 2018? I am expanding and adding another treatment room, and am actively searching for other likeminded professionals to join the team. And any predicted trends in the world of beauty treatments for the next few years? The focus is shifting to looking healthy rather than young, so there’ll be talk of treatments such as anti gravity yoga; skin fitness; plateletrich plasma skin treatments; collagen superfood supplementation and skin tightening via laser.

esearch repeatedly proves the importance of light in our lives and its role in maintaining the daily cycle of activity, sleep, physical health and well-being. And there’s been many experts including Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud and The Royal Institute of British Architects urging designers to include more light in their new home plans. We think this six-bed property located just a few miles to the east of the market town of Ringwood, would get the green light from the Grand Designs team. One of the first things about St Andrews Lodge that hits you is that, with this home, the future is definitely bright. There’s so much natural light flooding into every room, creating a harmony of bright space, it’s just the tonic for chasing away the winter blues. Recently refurbished to a high standard, the entrance hall features engineered oak flooring with a wall of glazed windows and door providing immediate views over the surrounding grounds. We’ll come back to those beautiful surrounds later, but in the meantime, continuing through the house, the large sitting room provides triple aspect with French doors leading out on to the rear garden. There’s a second large reception room at the rear of the home with not only a gorgeous mezzanine level, but the dual aspect provides twice the view. If you were to draw your eyes inwardly for a moment there’s the feature open brick fireplace to enjoy. The well appointed kitchen is located at the front of the property offering a range of wall and floor mounted solid oak units with granite work surface, island unit and breakfast bar. The high end range of integrated appliances includes three Neff ovens, a microwave, dishwasher, fridge/freezer and wine cooler. The utility

room houses the oil fired central heating boiler, additional storage and inset sink whilst a laundry room provides an ideal area to air clothes. Two further reception rooms are located on the ground floor and offer flexible, adaptable accommodation with both enjoying views over the stunning gardens. The ground floor accommodation is completed by a well appointed cloakroom. On the first floor and accessed from the impressive landing are six beautiful double bedrooms, each with their own precious view. The elegant master suite is spacious and bright with doors opening on to a balcony, made for drinking in those stunning views over the main garden and on to the surrounding countryside. It also boasts a walk in wardrobe and boutique hotel-style ensuite. Five further bedrooms enjoy views over the surrounding grounds with three offering further luxe ensuite facilities. We keep mentioning the views, so let’s enlighten you to just how spectacular they are. Along with the landscaped garden which sweeps from the rear to the side of the house, there’s a stream-fed pond with water feature, mature trees, pretty shrubs and manicured lawns. A paddock lies to the south with post and rail fencing boundary and gate providing direct New Forest access. Additionally there are two areas of woodland providing a total plot size of approximately five acres. The remote operated gate offers access to the gravel drive, which leads to the triple garage complex. Found just 30 minutes drive from Salisbury, for one lucky owner the future looks very bright indeed. For more: Goadsby, 39-41 High Street, Ringwood. tel: 01425 470283; www.goadsby.com

Q&A
E
mma, Viscountess Weymouth is the wife of Ceawlin Thynn, heir to the 7th Marquess of Bath. When her husband succeeds his father, Viscountess Weymouth will become the first black marchioness in British history. Viscountess Weymouth works as a brand ambassador for Fiorucci, has modelled for Dolce & Gabbana, and is a financial supporter of the Women’s Institute. The Viscountess is also a chef and has her own online cooking show, Emma’s Kitchen, where she cooks historic recipes as well as her own creations in the kitchens of the Longleat estate. She also regularly hosts Emma’s Afternoon Tea, using only all local ingredients. In June 2017 she organised the first annual Longleat Food and Drink Festival. Emma and Ceawlin have two children, John, three and Henry, one. My childhood was a very safe, very happy time. I’m close with my mum and sister and so the three of us spent a lot of time with one another in London, the West Country and the South of France - we still do! I went to school in London before studying for a History of Art degree at University College London. I’ve always been in the West Country to some extent. I have family who live in the West Country who I always visited as a little girl. I think that’s why I feel so at home at Longleat – it’s familiar. I tried acting for a bit after receiving one of the top 5 A level theatre studies grades in the UK that year, but I found my feet more in presenting as I could be myself and felt liberated in that role. Ceawlin and I had known one another for years through a family connection, which then, after rekindling our friendship, grew into us dating and then getting engaged. We have now been married a little over four years. We have two young boys, John who is a very funny, very lively three year old and our baby, Henry, who will be one on 30 December. He was born in LA via a surrogate as I was very unwell when I had John as I suffered with a complicated pituitary gland issue. This meant it wasn’t safe for me to carry another pregnancy myself. I’m impatient and always looking to achieve the next step or reach my next goal. I find it very hard to sit still. There’s forever something I want to be working on or visiting a place with my family. I laugh a lot and try not to take myself too seriously. I’m never bored. I have a lot of interests and passions including cooking, fashion, fitness and art. Also my boys are hugely entertaining to be around! My mother and sister are my rocks. I could never thank enough for everything they have done, and the inspiration they have been, for me.

EMMA, VISCOUNTESS WEYMOUTH Viscountess Weymouth, also known as The First Lady of Longleat, is credited with bringing a new, positive energy to the estate You feel like you’re in another world when you’re at Longleat. I love living here. It’s a very special place; the gardens were designed by Capability Brown and coming down the drive never, ever fails to give me a little flutter in my stomach. During the Festival of Light, which finishes 8 January, it is like being in fairy tale. I feel a terrific responsibility to preserve the house for generations to come. We live in a house where so much life and history has already gone before us, which is both marvellous and overwhelming at the same time. There is a doorframe which has been used to chart the height of the Thynn children since 1700s. It is one of my favourite things about the house – these little pencil marks with the dates beside them. Ceawlin and his sister Lenka are on there and so is John, right at the bottom. We would do another series of All Change at Longleat. Absolutely. We love having the opportunity to show all of the exciting events and new arrivals which are happening at Longleat.
the Food Festival is the dream for me. There are plans in the pipeline to do it again this summer. Glastonbury won’t happen at Longleat – it wasn’t meant to be. I love to bake with John as my helper. We made an incredible Smarties Surprise Cake the other day for John’s school and it looked great. I used to agonise over small decisions, whereas now I’m a lot better at just getting on with it. Worrying too much is such a waste of time. I have huge ambitions to make Longleat into more of a foodie destination and help the team at Longleat to grow the food offering available on the estate. Emma’s Kitchen and the Festive Afternoon Tea are two ways which I’m helping to bring this ambition to life. I love Salisbury Cathedral – it is so breathtaking. We attend carol services there – a truly beautiful event in such a magnificent setting.
We regularly visit the safari park with our own children. John loves to visit the donkeys in particular. We also have two giant Flemish rabbits, they’re sisters called Venus and Serena.
Where do you like to holiday? I enjoy holidaying near the sea so anywhere that’s hot and with a beach is ideal. Ceawlin and I have a house in Saint Tropez where I spent many summers growing up, so it always feels like I’m going home when we spend time there.
I love hosting people at Longleat and talking to everyone, so curating an experience such as
