how to establish a
household budget
H
ousehold budgets can help families thrive and survive should unforeseen financial issues arise. Establishing a household budget is no small task, as numerous factors must be considered to come up with a budget that secures families’ futures without sacrificing their everyday quality of life.
finances
To develop a budget everyone in the household can live with, heads of household should first get a firm grasp of their finances. First determine how much money is coming in and how much money is in savings. Then make a list of the family’s financial obligations, including costs associated with housing, food, transportation, utilities, and other monthly bills like student loan payments. Be thorough in this examination and you should get an idea of how you’re spending your money and where you can make any cuts if need be.
behaviors
Heads of household should make honest assessments of their behaviors with regard to money. Are you prone to impulse shopping? How closely do you track your daily spending? Can you cut back on certain daily expenses, such as morning cups of coffee from the coffee shop or restaurant lunches? While you might have little leeway with regard to large expenses like car and housing payments, you can likely save substantial amounts of money by cutting back on small, daily expenses that can add up to substantial amounts of money over time. Track your behaviors with regard to “spending
4Rent.ca
January 7–21, 2022
money,” jotting down each purchase you make, no matter how small it seems. After a couple of weeks tracking your daily spending, a picture of your financial behaviors should develop and you can then see if there are any areas where you can save money.
determining a need versus a want
Once you see how you behave financially, you can then make a list of those daily and monthly expenses that qualify as a need and those that fall into the “want” category. For example, morning coffee might be a need, but why not brew that coffee at home and take it with you rather than buying a costly cup at the coffee shop near your office each day? You can keep some of the items that fall onto your want list as a daily or monthly reward, but try to eliminate those that are compromising your monthly finances. And remember to include contributions to a savings account in your list of needs.
build your budget
A firm grasp of income, bills and behaviors and the knowledge of what’s a need versus a want should put heads of household in position to develop their budgets. Stick to your budget for a month and then assess how you and your family adjusted. While the adjustment might prove difficult at first, by the end of the first month you might notice any financial-related stress you had been feeling has begun to dissipate, and you might even make an effort to tighten the purse strings a little more as you look to save more money. ■ — Metro Creative

INFO YOU CAN USE
kitchen nightmares 22
W
hether it’s an explosion in the oven, a major spill on the floor, or a ruined dessert at the last minute, we all have our hot buttons in the kitchen. Don’t let kitchen nightmares keep you from eating healthy with these insights into common cooking pet peeves and some helpful hints for dealing with them. 1. Post-cooking cleanup. From washing dishes to wiping up countertops and floors, nearly half of Canadian adults (49 percent) list “cleaning up after they’re done cooking” as among their biggest pet peeves when preparing a meal in their kitchen, according to a recent Moen survey, conducted online by Harris Poll. The easiest way to avoid a mess? Cleaning as you go. Keep spills at bay by wiping them up right away, put dishes you’re done using in the sink instead of letting them clutter the counter, and use as few utensils as possible to minimize the amount you’ll have to wash. Thirty-six percent of Canadians also list “removing grease/tough residue from dishes” as a top pet peeve. Combat caked-on messes by rinsing dishes immediately after using or eating so the food doesn’t harden. If you’ve forgotten, soak dishes in soapy water before putting them in the dishwasher to ensure tough-to-rinse foods will come clean. And be
4Rent.ca
January 7–21, 2022
sure to choose a kitchen faucet with a powerful spray to make removing stuck-on foods that much easier, and provide more force to get tough jobs done. 2. Flying solo. When it comes to preparing food, one is definitely the loneliest number. One of the biggest pet peeves of Canadians when preparing a meal is “having to do it all by themselves.” To lessen the burden, divide the responsibility among members of the household, assigning each person a designated night to whip something up (or buy takeout!). Meal prep is also a great excuse for some family bonding time. Get kids excited to help out by letting them choose the menu, such as homemade pizzas, or challenge your spouse to assist you with a new recipe at least once a week, so cooking feels like a fun activity, not a burden.
3. Sticky fingers. From baking ooey gooey brownies to making a batch of mama’s famous meatballs, cooking often means getting your hands dirty. And that’s not always a pleasant experience, especially when it comes time to wash them. Nearly one quarter of Canadians (23 percent) say “trying to use the sink faucet with dirty hands” is among their biggest pet peeves when preparing a meal in their kitchen. Make washing up easier by installing a hands-free faucet that detects your movement, setting water flow in motion, allowing you to speed through everyday tasks with greater ease and efficiency. ■ — News Canada

make the year ahead
clutter-free M any people feel the dawn of a new year provides an opportunity to clean the slate and begin anew. That notion can be applied in various ways, including around the house. Cleaning the slate at home may involve reducing clutter around the house. Clutter can gradually overtake a home’s interior, turning a once pristine home into one overwhelmed with nonessential items. Clearing a home of clutter can seem like a monumental task, but the following tips can help homeowners and apartment dwellers make the year ahead clutter-free. • Scan important documents and save them on a computer. Some documents cannot be discarded, but that does not mean they have to be stored in bulky file cabinets or desk drawers. Scan important documents such as medical receipts or tax returns and save them on your computer where they won’t take up any physical space. Purchase an external hard drive as a safety net where you can store backups of important doc-

January 7–21, 2022
uments in case a computer crashes and cannot be rebooted. • Thin out DVD and CD libraries. Thanks to streaming services and digital music players, DVDs and compact discs have become somewhat obsolete. Discard or donate DVDs that you can just as easily stream through your television, and convert compact discs to digital files that you can play on your computer and MP3 players, ultimately donating the discs and clearing space. • Purchase furniture that doubles as storage. Storage ottomans and benches can help clear common areas and bedrooms of clutter such as blankets and bed linens that can make rooms feel more claustrophobic. Storage furniture might not get excess items out of the house, but such furnishings can create a more comfortable, welcoming environment. • Switch to e-statements for bank documents and utility bills. Paper is a big contributor to household clutter. That’s still the case even though many adults now pay
the majority of their bills online. When given the chance to choose between paper or e-statements, opt for the latter so bills and bank statements don’t pile up on your desk or throughout your home office. If you still want to keep important bills and bank statements, download them to your computer and keep them in a designated folder on your desktop. • Adopt an “out with the old, in with the new” mantra. Resolve to discard old items after purchasing new ones or receiving birthday or holiday gifts. Hanging on to old items because they can still function and serve some utility is a recipe for a cluttered home. Anytime you or a family member brings a new item into your home, make sure the item it’s replacing finds its way out the door. Clearing clutter is a goal for many people at the dawn of a new year. As intimidating as clutter can seem, discarding it is easier than it may appear. ■ — Metro Creative
