mood-boosting comfort foods may lower stress during challenging times

The pandemic is causing uncertainty and upheaval in our everyday life, taking a toll on our routines, relationships and physical and mental health.

Many of us have been turning to food for comfort, with sales of staples like meat, flour and eggs spiking in recent months.

It could be due to biological drive. New research, published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, found meat plays an important role in our mental health. The study found clear evidence that those who avoid eating meat tended to have higher rates or risk of depression and anxiety compared to those who include meat in their diet.

Celebratory foods like ribs, bacon and steak can even help lift our spirits and mark special occasions –even if you’re just rejoicing that it’s summertime.

Perfect for a backyard barbecue, this delicious pork chop recipe is a great way to toast the warm weather with family or friends, even if at a distance. ■

• 2 tbsp hoisin sauce

• 1 tbsp tomato ketchup

• 1 tbsp light soy sauce

• 1 tbsp rice wine or cider vinegar

• 2 tsp orange zest

• ¼ cup orange juice

the importance of self-care

When hearing the words “self-care,” some people may think it means indulging yourself, such as getting a massage or buying yourself a treat. In some ways it can include these types of things, but it is also much more. Whatever your form of selfcare, there is real value in taking care of yourself in simple, regular ways. For you, it might be your daily walk through the neighbourhood, a good chat with a friend or a session with a therapist.

Taking care of your physical and mental health can help you handle difficult experiences, help you feel more confident in yourself and your abilities and improve your ability to regain some control after you’ve been through a tough time.

Of course, many things can affect mental well-being, and they aren’t all within our control. But, having things to look forward to and putting aside time to prioritize yourself are important parts of everyone’s well-being. As many of us learn the hard way, you can’t do your best for anyone else if you’re not showing up for yourself.

If even the small things seem challenging or you’re finding that emotions like sadness, worry, loneliness or anger are long-lasting or interfering with your daily routines, it may be time to reach out for help. This is another important act of self-care itself.

There are many free and credible mental health resources available online, including self-guided therapy, one-on-one counselling with qualified health professionals and moderated peer-to-peer support. You can find more information about these resources at canada.ca/mental-health. ■

tips to help you tackle your debt

The pandemic has taught us that life can be unpredictable.

Economic uncertainty about the future means it’s more important than ever to have the right tools to respond and adapt to changes in your financial situation, while still taking steps to manage your finances and debt.

Having a budget is key to feeling in control of your money. A budget helps you know how much money is coming in, going out and being saved. Budgeting helps balance your income and expenses, so you get a clear idea of what you can afford.

Before you start, it’s important that you take some time to identify your needs and wants. These can differ greatly from one person to another.

Next, create your budget. Use the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada’s free online budget planner to help you figure out your priorities and where to cut expenses. It’s also great for comparing your budget against Canadians in similar life situations.

To make it easier to pay back your debt, it’s always a good idea to have a realistic plan. Here are steps to get you started:

identify what you owe

Make a list and for each debt, list the total amount you owe, your minimum monthly payment and the interest rate.

decide on a strategy

Create your plan – choose a timeframe that’s reasonable and affordable. Decide which debts to pay off first, depending on the type and considering things like interest rates. Work directly with your bank and creditors to discuss your financial situation.

consolidate your debts

You may consider applying for a loan or line of credit to pay off multiple debts with high interest rates. Consolidating your debts means you’ll only have to make one monthly payment rather than paying each one individually, and the interest rate could potentially be lower. Contact a financial institution to discuss whether this is an option.

Managing money and debt in uncertain times isn’t always easy, but there are resources to help you. Find more information at canada.ca/money. ■

3 easy tips to stay on top of your nutritional goals

The benefits of a healthy diet go beyond physical appearance. A nutritious diet, supported by a healthy lifestyle, helps us thrive both mentally and physically. Whether you’re trying to hit a certain physical goal or are seeking to

manage a medical condition, below are three easy tips to stay on top of your nutrition.

read your labels

Food labels are more than just a tool to count calories. They also allow us to track ingredients and macronu-

trients. That’s especially important if you have allergies or food restrictions because of a medical condition such as kidney disease, diabetes or high blood pressure. Read labels carefully and count your macronutrients so you don’t go over your nutritional limits.

4Rent.ca January 20–February 3, 2023 22 TIPS

cook for the week ahead

Busy lives make it hard for us to cook daily. Luckily, many recipes are easy to make ahead of time and store in the fridge or freezer. One evening a week try batch cooking a couple of recipes, cutting up veggies for your salads and making an easy snack to grab on the go like eggplant and chickpea bites. Having a few of your meals ready for the week ahead will cut down cooking time and help keep your nutrition on track.

make a plan and stick to it

When we’re at a loss for what to eat, we tend to grab the first thing we see or cave into cravings. In both cases, we tend to stray from nutritional goals. To prevent that, consider creating a structured meal plan to help you avoid impulse eating and make cooking time less stressful. If you struggle to plan ahead, look for online tools that can make it simpler, like the Kidney Community Kitchen meal planner.

It has a variety of recipes that take the stress out of planning a kidneyhealthy diet. It’s also a solid tool to track macronutrients and ensure you’re staying within your nutritional limits.

However you plan your food, remember that physical activity should always accompany a healthy diet for an overall healthy lifestyle.

home décor tips to refresh your space

The new year is a great opportunity to give your home a facelift. So, take advantage of the wintertime urge to nest by transforming some of your favourite rooms. With a few creative changes and strategic investments, giving your home a fresh new look and feel is easy and affordable.

for the bedroom

When it comes to the space where you spend at least a third of your life sleeping, creating a sense of calm and security is key. Crisp new linens or throw pillows in bold or cheerful colours can revitalize the whole room. Adding candles and new artwork or

4Rent.ca January 20–February 3, 2023 28 TIPS

photographs on the walls are simple ways to freshen up the aesthetic while showcasing your personality.

for the dining room

Remember how much you loved setting a festive table during the holidays? Keep this indulgence alive to give your dining room an extra oomph, and encourage your family to use this space throughout the year. Splurge on some really nice table linens in colours you love and make a fun DIY centrepiece with elements from nature – check online for tutorials and ideas.

for the home office

After a couple of years working remotely, most of our office spaces could use an upgrade. Get a new calendar that you’ll love looking at, whether it’s photos of dogs or inspirational quotes, and change up your picture frames to reflect more recent memories.

Since the key to any office is great electronics, consider your current needs. With the right device, you can easily take your workstation to another room or even outside.

Wherever you choose to work, take some time to make sure your space is set up ergonomically and that your chair and monitor are positioned to eliminate strain on your eyes, wrists and back. ■ — News Canada
