Top 8 renter issues
JAne HermAn
Harmonious living is all about treating others with respect and consideration. Start by making a concerted effort by avoiding these ‘top eight renter issues.’
1. Keep the noise down. Take off your high heels at the door, refrain from vacuuming, using power tools or hanging pictures at 10 p.m.
2. When in the elevator, hold it for a neighbour. Likewise, don’t hold it unnecessarily, like while you’re waiting for your spouse/ roommate to put their coat on,
lock the door, and walk all the way down the hall.
3. No Smoking. If smoking is not allowed in your building or on the floor, don’t do it.
4. Respect and maintain common areas as if they were an extension of your own home.
5. Ensure your pet is a good neighbour, too. Walk your pet regularly, and stoop’n’scoop. Also, make sure your pet doesn’t howl all day or bark all night.
6. Keep an eye on the time and on your laundry regularly. Don’t leave your stuff sitting in the washer or dryer after it has finished.
7. Remember to dress appropriately when taking out
trash, recycling, picking up mail, doing laundry or getting something from your car.
8. Respect your neighbours’ right to privacy. Be cognizant of and promptly report any crimes or suspicious persons in the building.

The closets are full. Do you really need to create more storage space or do you need to pare down your stuff?
Top seven excuses for holding on To cloThing we don’T wear
1 It will come back in style. Yes, it will, but the fabric and cut will be slightly different and everyone will be able to tell you have been holding on to it since 1978!
2 It will fit once I lose weight. You
may lose weight in different places and it may still not fit. It may go out of style by the time you lose the weight. Reward yourself by buying new clothes instead of wearing your old things.
3 I paid a lot of money for it. And it makes you feel guilty every time you look into your closet and see it hanging there, so let go of the reminder, and the shame.
4 I wore it on my first date, the day I got promoted, etc. Don’t let sentimental items take up valuable space in your closet. Take a picture and let it go or keep it and store it elsewhere.
5 Someone bought it for me. They’ll never know, and even if they find out, they’ll understand.
6 It needs repairs. Put a deadline on it to do the repairs and let it go if you miss the deadline.
7 I need it just in case. This is probably the top excuse I hear, and it is based on fear. Be brave – unless you can find a specific reason to hold on to something, find the courage to let it go.

TOP TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH
This is a time when many of us start to think about our goals for the coming year. For some, taking care of our health is a key priority. Building in healthy habits where possible is important to our health. Here are four ways you can get healthier this year.
EAT WELL
It’s not easy to change a habit. Eating habits are no exception. There are many different factors that make changing your eating habits difficult. But over time and with small steps you can be well on your way. You can make healthy eating habits easier to maintain over the long term by finding options that fit your daily routine. Eating a variety of vegetables and fruits, whole grain foods, and protein foods as well as making water your drink of choice
can help you maintain your overall health. Remember that everyone’s health goals and individual needs differ. It is important to find healthy food choices and habits that are right for you.
REDUCE SEDENTARY TIME
The Canadian 24-hour movement guidelines have been developed for all age groups to provide Canadians with guidance about how much physical activity, sedentary time and sleep is needed in a 24-hour day. Some physical activity is better than none, and getting started is easier than you think. Making choices like walking to the store instead of driving or taking the stairs instead of the elevator all contribute towards a healthy 24 hours. Try to limit sedentary time to eight hours or less and break up long periods
of sitting where possible. Getting enough good quality sleep can benefit from consistent bed and wake-up times.
BOOK A CHECKUP
To quote an old saying, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Regular oral and medical check-ups are an important part of your overall health and can uncover potential issues before they become major issues. As we age, there are certain tests we should take, including mammograms and colonoscopies. Be sure to talk to your doctor about the right timing for these check-ups based on your individual health needs.
QUIT SMOKING
Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do to improve your overall health, and you’ll start noticing positive impacts almost immediately. Start by creating a quit plan that includes the reasons you want to quit and lists the tools and coping mechanisms you will use to manage cravings. Next, be aware of the things that might trigger a craving, and consider using quit aids, such as nicotine gum or patches, to get through them. Finally, reach out for support when needed. Free quit-smoking support services are available across the country. You can chat with a quit coach by phone, online or text.

SKIN THIS WINTER
As we move into winter, we won’t just experience snow, ice and cold temperatures. We also have to deal with drier winter air, which can negatively impact our skin. Dr. Joseph Lam shares three ways to protect your skin this season.
DON’T PACK AWAY THE SUNSCREEN
While we tend to think of sunscreen as an essential item for the hot sunny days of summer, it’s also important to protect your skin from sunburn and sun damage during time spent outside in winter. “Winter sun is still strong enough to burn your skin,” says Dr. Lam. “If you’re
planning an outdoor adventure, be sure sunscreen is on your packing list.”
INCREASE THE MOISTURIZER
“For most people, regularly applying a moisturizer will help prevent the dry, itchy skin that comes with the cold weather and indoor heating. But if you have a skin condition, such as eczema, you might need to use your moisturizer more often,” says Dr. Lam. He also shares some practical advice, “Before applying any new skincare product, test the product in one small area of your skin before applying to larger areas of the skin.”
PROTECT YOUR SKIN
Remember to dress for the weather and protect your skin. Dr. Lam shares, “Cold winter temperatures, especially in parts of Canada with frigid winters, can seriously damage the skin, such as from frostbite. Covering your head and hands and wearing appropriate footwear can be more comfortable and protect Canadians of all ages from the harsh climate.”
