VALENTINE’S DAY IS NOT JUST FOR ROMANTIC PARTNERS Sibling relationships play a crucial role in a person’s life. They provide a unique bond and connection that can last a lifetime. Nurturing these relationships is essential for fostering love, support, and understanding among siblings. We all know that no family is perfect, and siblings are going to argue, some may even stop speaking to one another. Which brings us to Valentine’s Day. If this is you, this is a great place to start. Valentine’s Day is not just about romantic relationships; it can also be a great opportunity to nurture sibling bonds. Siblings share a unique and special connection that should be celebrated and cherished. This Valentine’s Day, take the time to show your siblings how much you care and strengthen your relationship with them. It can be as simple as mailing a card. One way to nurture sibling relationships is through effective communication. Encouraging open and honest dialogue allows siblings to express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns. Active listening and empathy are also important in fostering understanding and resolving conflicts. By creating a safe space for communication, siblings can develop stronger bonds

and build trust with one another. Who else will always have your back? Another way to nurture sibling relationships is by spending quality time together. Engaging in shared activities, such as playing games, going on outings, or simply having conversations, can create lasting memories and strengthen the sibling bond. It is important to prioritize this time and try to be present and engaged with one another. Who doesn’t like to eat. Meeting up for dinner is always a great plan. Make it monthly or bi-monthly, just make the time. Lastly, showing appreciation and support for each other is vital in nurturing sibling relationships. Celebrating each other’s achievements, offering encouragement during challenging times, and being there for one another in times of need can create a sense of belonging and unity. Small gestures of kindness and acts of generosity can go a long way in building strong sibling relationships. Nurturing sibling relationships requires effective communication, quality time spent together, and showing appreciation and support. By investing in these aspects, siblings can develop lifelong bonds that provide love, support, and understanding throughout their lives.

sleep tight HELIGHT SLEEP

WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM We all know that sleep is an essential aspect of daily life with both shortand long-term health implications. It affects physiological processes, cognitive performance, and mood. Practicing good sleep habits is also linked to a lower level of various health conditions, like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and mental and cognitive disorders. In fact, according to the 24-hour Canadian Movement Guidelines, developed by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) and the Public Health Agency of Canada, amongst other academics, sleep is one of the three core recommendations for adults, along with movement and minimizing sedentary time over a 24-hour period. So, instead of focusing on a single movement behaviour, the guidelines showcase the importance of integrating all three across the whole 24-hour day. According to the guidelines, individuals aged 18-64 should aim for 7 to 9 hours of high-quality sleep regularly, while those aged 65 and above should aim for 7 to 8 hours. Maintaining consistent bedtimes and wake-up times is important to ensure sound sleep. Unfortunately, getting a restful sleep isn’t easy. During the day, our minds are hijacked by all our electronic gadgets, such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. It is also a well-known fact that the blue light emitted by electronic devices

can have a negative impact on our sleep patterns. This is all the more reason why you may also want to consider setting a curfew for your electronic gadgets to ensure that you are not using them too late into the night. This will help you to establish a healthy sleep pattern and improve your overall well-being. But what if you could create a device to help you fall asleep faster while promoting a more restful sleep? And what if this technology was inspired by the work of NASA and based on the latest findings related to exposure to light at specific wavelengths? Curious? That’s the science behind red-light therapy and the creation

of Helight Sleep. Now, you, too, can benefit from this award-winning device. According to Greg Bonnier, Vice President at Helight in Montreal, Helight Sleep emits a precise wavelength of 630 nanometers, meticulously calibrated for 14 minutes at an optimal intensity. The red light gradually fades over 14 minutes, ensuring an uninterrupted, smooth transition. Unlike blue light, which we are exposed to during the day and which signals the brain to stay awake and alert, this 28-minute patented protocol mirrors the natural cycle of light at the end of the day (i.e., sunset), creating a biological signal to the brain that it’s time to

go to sleep and start melatonin secretion. The best part is it’s easy to use – no apps, no subscriptions, and used by pro athletes (MLS, MLB, NHL, FIFA). Now that Mom and Dad can get a good night’s sleep – what about the kids? The 24-hour Canadian Movement Guidelines indicate, “Kids are inactive and may be losing sleep over it. They aren’t moving enough to be tired, and they may also be too tired to move. For optimal health benefits, children and youth (aged 5–17 years) should achieve high levels of physical activity, low levels of sedentary behaviour, and sufficient sleep each day.” It recommends “Uninterrupted 9 to 11 hours of sleep per night for those aged 5–13 years and 8 to 10 hours per night for those aged 14–17 years, with consistent bed and wake-up times.” That’s why Bonnier decided to create Helight Kidzzz. “Parents were finding their kids were taking their Helight Sleep devices. So, we adapted our award-winning patented sleep aid device with children and infants in mind. The new enclosure is lighter, does not use paint and boasts an eye-catching design. Now kids can have their own devices, ensuring everyone gets a good night’s rest.” And if you’re not completely satisfied, Helight offers a 60-night trial period to test the product and determine if it’s the right fit for you and your family. csepguidelines.ca | ca.helight.com

HOW TO APPROACH RAISING GAMERS Gaming is a popular activity across the globe. Studies have shown that more than one billion people across the globe play some type of video game every day, and the number of gamers is growing every day. Such prevalence can make it hard for parents to govern their youngsters’ gaming habits. As difficult as it can be to get kids to put their controllers down, the American Academy of Pediatrics notes that time spent gaming can take away from the time kids spend on other pursuits, including healthy activities like exercising and reading. That’s part of the reason why the AAP recommends limiting the time kids spend gaming to no more than one hour per day. In addition to limiting how much time kids spend gaming; parents can take these steps to make sure kids’ gaming experiences are as positive as possible. Familiarize yourself with a game’s content before allowing kids to play it Parents should be concerned by how long their youngsters play video games, and by the content of those games. First-person shooter games

remain incredibly popular, but such games can have an adverse effect on young players. The AAP notes that studies have shown that children exposed to virtual violence, such as that depicted in first-person shooter games, and violent media have shown that they may become numb to violence and even imitate the violence. Parents should always vet a game before allowing their children to play it. Make sure its content is not too mature and/or violent for children.

Confirm ESRB ratings Parents of young children likely don’t allow their youngsters to watch R-rated films, but they might not know that a similar rating system exists for video games. ESRB ratings help parents make informed decisions about the video games and the apps their children play. The ratings, which are broken down at esrb.org, are included on game packaging labels and let parents know how appropriate or inappropriate a game may be for children. Founded by the Interactive Digital Software Association in 1994, the ESRB notes that 61 per cent of its ratings for physical and console downloadable video games in 2008 were rated either E (Everyone) or E10+ (Everyone 10+). That means parents of children under 10 have many age-appropriate game options when buying games for their kids. Keep consoles in common areas By limiting gaming to common areas in the home, parents can more closely monitor how much time their youngsters are spending playing

CHILDREN EXPOSED TO VIRTUAL VIOLENCE, SUCH AS THAT DEPICTED IN FIRST-PERSON SHOOTER GAMES, AND VIOLENT MEDIA HAVE SHOWN THAT THEY MAY BECOME NUMB TO VIOLENCE AND EVEN IMITATE THE VIOLENCE. games. The AAP recommends parents designate handheld games as “family property” as opposed to items each child “owns”. This can help parents make sure such devices are kept in common areas at all times. Play with children Another way parents can monitor what their kids are playing and how long they’re playing for is to play with them. Multiple player games are very popular, and parents can use that popularity to manage their kids’ gaming habits more effectively. Parents may face some challenges as they try to govern their kids’ gaming habits. But various strategies can help moms and dads keep tabs on those habits. – Metro Creative cityparent.com

CELEBRATE GROUNDHOG DAY IN WIARTON WORDS BY ANDREW HIND By early February, most of us are already feeling the weight of the winter season. The cold, the snow that grinds commutes to a halt, the seemingly endless darkness. Spring can’t come soon enough. Wiarton has the perfect solution. Dust off wintry cobwebs with a community party that also heralds the pending arrival – hopefully sooner rather than later – of spring and its rejuvenating warmth. The Wiarton Willie Festival has been lifting winter spirits for over six decades and has taken on national significance as media from across Canada descend on this village of 2000 souls to report on whether the titular albino groundhog sees his shadow. Willie has become so iconic to the community that a sign near 14 CITY PARENT | February 2024

the entrance to the town proudly proclaims Wiarton as the ‘Groundhog Capital of Canada’. The Wiarton Willie Festival kicks off on Fri., Feb. 2 with a spectacular fireworks display at 7 a.m. in Bluewater Park. Shortly after is the Prediction Ceremony, at 8:07 a.m. sharp at the Wiarton Arena parking lot. An anxious hush falls over the crowd as the groggy groundhog pokes his twitching nose out of his den. Members of Willie’s ‘Shadow Cabinet’, all local dignitaries dressed in formal attire, look on. Then, the town’s mayor asks Willie for his springtime weather forecast. If the groundhog sees his shadow, it’s six more weeks of winter. If there’s no shadow, however, we’re promised an

early spring. Either way, good news or bad, everyone celebrates the word. After Willie retreats into his den the public is invited to participate in free skating at the arena. But there’s far more to the Wiarton Willie Festival than skating, fireworks, and predicting when spring might arrive. The fun picks up again the next day, Sat. Feb. 3, with family friendly activities from 1-4 p.m. in Bluewater Park. There are sleigh rides through the park, an axe throwing trailer, a trackless train ride, photo booth, video gaming trailer, and games for little ones. Warm bellies with hot chocolate and popcorn. Note that Bluewater Park is located along the shores of Lake Huron. It can get cold, so dress accordingly.

Willie may well see his shadow, forecasting a longer winter, but nonetheless there are never glum faces: the sheer entertainment of the Wiarton Willie Festival sees to that. Accommodations With the event spanning two days, you’ll likely want to spend a night. Nearby Owen Sound has a selection of comfortable and affordable chain motels and hotels to choose from. Comfort Inn (choicehotels.com) offers a nice blend of value and hospitality, and a free hot breakfast.

WHEN CAN CHILDREN BRUSH THEIR OWN TEETH? Parents quickly learn that their children go through a transition marked by a desire to be more independent. They’re picking out their own mismatched clothes and no longer want any help when solving puzzles or complex toys. That newfound independence signals getting older and can be a healthy thing to nourish. But what happens when a youngster suddenly believes they can brush their teeth without assistance? Parents wrestling with their kids’ can-do attitude and if it’s wise to allow them to brush their teeth unassisted can familiarize themselves with certain guidelines to determine their youngsters’ readiness. According to Scripps Pediatric Dentistry & 18 CITY PARENT | February 2024

Orthodontics, most kids are at least six years old before they have developed the finesse and dexterity to handle a toothbrush in a manner that will effectively remove plaque. Dentists also may ask if the child can tie his or her own shoes, which can serve as a barometer of readiness to wield a toothbrush without assistance. Pediatricians and pediatric dentists recommend that children visit a dentist as soon as a child’s first tooth starts to appear. This also is when parents should begin to clean their children’s teeth. As a child ages, the natural proclivity to want to take charge of brushing teeth takes hold. The child may not yet have the manual dexterity

to brush alone, but parents can encourage the child to brush and then go over the teeth as a “double check”. This helps foster independence while also ensuring teeth are fully cleaned. Flossing may require even more dexterity than brushing, but it is essential for sloughing off plaque that accumulates between teeth and below the gum line, according to Parents magazine. Moms and dads can introduce their children to pre-threaded Y-shaped flossing tools, which are easier to handle than loose floss. Parents will have to check on children even as they age to be sure they are practicing good oral hygiene. Parents who are in doubt about their

RIPPLE FOUNDATION: TODAY’S YOUTH, TOMORROW’S LEADERS WORDS BY LORRAINE PELLEY The Ripple Foundation is a literacybased charitable organization that focuses on teaching kids how to express and empower themselves through creative writing. The foundation offers four free programs to youth in grades four to 12 including weekly workshops, a writing contest, an annual conference and a weekly blog. All of their programs and services are available online so children and young adults across Canada can participate. The volunteer run organization was founded by Ivy Wong in 2012. An entrepreneur who owns two businesses, including a publishing company and a digital solutions company, Wong started the Ripple Foundation to help children improve their creative literacy, grow personally, and develop important leadership, confidence, and social skills. Wong registered the Ripple Foundation as a non-profit organization in 2015 and as a charitable organization two years later. Ripple Foundation’s Kids Write 4 Kids (KW4K) contest runs until March 31, 2024. It is open to all

aspiring writers in grades four to eight. All submissions must be original creative stories written by the entrant. Entries will be judged by a panel of 12 literary and education experts including Jessica Scott, a bestselling children’s book author, Marty Chan, an award-winning author, writer, and playwright, Joyce Grant, a freelance journalist, Alison Isaac, a teacher and writer, and other distinguished authors, accomplished journalists, and winners from past years. The winner’s submission will be professionally published and sold in paperback and eBook format on Amazon, iBookstore, Apple, Google Play and Overdrive. All proceeds from the sales of the book will go to the winner’s charity of choice. This year’s winner donated their book’s proceeds to the Canadian Cancer Society. The books are designed, illustrated, and published by a team of industry leaders who volunteer at the foundation. Over 3,800 students have submitted entries and more than 11 schools and charities have benefitted from the proceeds of the book sales.

Ivy Wong, Ripple Foundation The foundation also hosts Write It Workshops to help kids in grades four to eight improve their writing skills. These free weekly workshops are held virtually Saturdays from 1 to 2 p.m., twice a year for five weeks. The workshops are run by a group of committed and trained volunteers who recognize the importance of literacy and want to help students reach their potential. The workshops help students learn how to format an engaging story and express themselves creatively. The workshop topics include Brainstorm Bonanza, Mixed Bag of Mayhem, Plotline Play-by-Play, Details! Details!, and Stay on Track. Wave Blog is a weekly blog written by students in grades eight to 12. This online platform is a positive and safe place for older students to share their views and interests, connect with their peers, and express themselves without fear of judgement, pressure, or being bullied.

To have a blog published on the site, students must submit their resume, a sample of their writing to the foundation, and go through a phone interview process first. Blog posts cover a variety of topics that range from entertaining and lighthearted, like movie and book reviews, to more serious topics including immigrating to Canada, diet and nutrition, and gender identity. The Express, Inspire, Connect Youth Conference is an annual virtual conference that’s coordinated, organized, and led by students. This half-day conference gives participants in grades eight to 12 a chance to connect with their peers, engage in meaningful discussions, brainstorm ideas, network with industry experts, and gain invaluable knowledge. The theme for the 2024 Conference is Today’s Youth, Tomorrow’s Leaders. Information about the Ripple Foundation and its programs is available on their website at ripplefoundation.ca cityparent.com

TALKING ABOUT INFERTILITY: CHLOE WILDE IS SHARING HER STORY TO HELP OTHER WOMEN WORDS BY LORRAINE PELLEY For many adults and couples, having a baby is one of the most important and exciting events in their life. However, for those experiencing infertility, that dream can become one of their darkest and most difficult journeys. Infertility is a disease that affects one in six adults. It is caused by a variety of conditions and can impact both male and female reproductive systems. On average, 48 million couples and 186 million adults globally experience infertility every year. Yet as common as this disease is, people struggling with it can often feel very alone and isolated. Chloe Wilde is openly sharing her own journey with infertility so other women and couples know they are not alone. Infertility took Wilde and Johnston on a years’ long journey that they weren’t expecting or prepared for. The Etalk Canada Reporter and her partner Ben Johnston always dreamed of becoming parents and were excited to have a baby. However, when they first started trying, things didn’t go as easily and smoothly as they expected. cityparent.com

After months of unsuccessful attempts, the couple visited a naturopath who specialized in fertility. For the next year, their lives revolved around lifestyle changes, ovulations sticks and health and menstrual tracking apps in the hopes of increasing their chances of getting pregnant. When they still couldn’t conceive after more than a year of trying, the two went to see a specialist. The emotional and mental challenges they faced because of infertility were difficult and, at times, overwhelming. Wilde quickly learned that her emotions could be easily triggered often without warning. While there were some triggers she could control, like updating the settings of her social media pages so she wasn’t getting pregnancy or baby related ads and content, other triggers, like seeing someone pushing a stroller out in public or a friend’s surprise pregnancy announcement, were beyond her control. She found support by joining online infertility groups and encourages other women to connect with groups and professionals specializing in infertility so you don’t feel so alone.

ON AVERAGE, 48 MILLION COUPLES AND 186 MILLION ADULTS GLOBALLY EXPERIENCE INFERTILITY EVERY YEAR. Like most couples experiencing infertility, Wilde and Johnston didn’t share their struggles with their family and friends so they often felt like they were living a secret, double life. Throughout the day, they would step into their normal roles as happy, healthy young adults with successful careers, hobbies, and relationships, but behind close doors, their time was consumed with appointments, consultations, tests, treatments, and procedures. Eventually, the couple was approved for provincial funding for in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. It took three embryo transfer

procedures before Wilde became pregnant. She gave birth to a beautiful and healthy baby boy last October. It was only after their son was born that Wilde and Johnston felt they could share their infertility experience with family, friends, and the public. The couple feels very fortunate that they were eligible for provincial funding as IVF treatments are very expensive. They hope funding programs will expand so more women can qualify for the costly procedures. Wilde also believes strongly in self-advocacy and encourages women to ask questions and not be afraid to change clinics if they feel the facility and staff aren’t the right fit. She changed clinics when she felt like she wasn’t being heard until she found one that was right for her. She recommends getting the clinic receptionist’s email address to send questions if women find this an easier way to communicate with their doctor. One lesson Wilde learned throughout her difficult journey, is that women experiencing infertility are stronger and more resilient than they think they are. February 2024 | CITY PARENT 23
