Family history is a world many of us would love to explore. However, a mistaken belief that it’s an expensive hobby requiring pricy subscriptions or trips to a special library are holding back many would-be genealogists.
Fortunately, you don’t necessarily need to pay for the information you need. The Canadian census is one of the best tools available for research into family history. And you can find it all for free.
Nearly all the available Canadian censuses are freely accessible through Library and Archives Canada, and the censuses from 1825 to 1926 can be individually searched using an online database.
You can learn many things from the census. But remember that every census is different because the questions change from census to census, as do the possible responses people could give. These changes reflect how Canadian society has transformed from one generation to the next.
In general, since 1871 you should be able to track your ancestors by the following information:
• age
• sex
• marital status
• country or province of birth
• religious denomination (after 1951, questions about religion have only been asked every ten years)
• ethnic origin
• occupation
• education
The earliest censuses might be missing certain information since weather or environmental disasters could make it impossible for all the information to be collected back then, or original records may have been lost to fires or water damage.
Family history can teach us so much about how our lives came to be. While it’s not always easy to find the information you want, finding free resources like the census can sure make it easier. The census is a great place to start. The 2021 Census starts on May 3. Find more information or complete your census at census.gc.ca. ■

It’s always nice when a win in one area of your life leads to another win – and that’s exactly what happens when you make eco-friendly food choices. Your body benefits from more nutritious meal ingredients, while the impact to the planet is minimized thanks to sustainable growing and production processes. Here are some tips to help you get started:
Long shipping distances contribute to higher carbon emissions, so the closer to home your food is grown the better for the environment. And what could be closer than your own backyard? Spinach, strawberries and bell peppers are some of the easier things to grow. If you lack space, even growing your own herbs in a small windowsill can make a difference. Or check out a community garden.
It can be easy to focus on choosing sustainable local produce and
forget about the other items that go into a meal, like condiments and even wine. There are plenty of Canadian wineries leading the way with green processes, like using
energy-efficient lighting and capturing rainwater for reuse. Whether it’s for drinking or cooking, do some digging to find a sustainable local vineyard for your wine.
We can’t grow everything we eat at home, so whenever you’re grocery shopping, do your research and choose products from
companies doing their part for the environment. For example, Bimbo Canada, the country’s largest and oldest commercial bakery behind popular brands like Villaggio, has strong sustainability practices. In the last year alone, it’s saved more than four million units of waste from landfills and is on track with its carbon footprint reduction goals to reduce environmental impact by 2025. ■

When it comes to mornings, we’re often so busy that we forget the small steps we can take to keep our health on track for the full day ahead. While we all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day, new research shows that 37 per cent of Canadians who do eat breakfast don’t always do so at home. The good news is that they’re finding ways to
grab a bite to eat even if they are on the go – 10 per cent eat in the car, on public transit or while walking.
Incorporating small steps into your morning routine can keep you on track toward reaching your health goals. Finding time for breakfast every morning is just one step you can take in the direction of your new year’s resolution. Here are five others:
1. Manage your energy, not your time: Exercising early in the day not only boosts brain activity and mood throughout the day – it also means you don’t have to worry about missing your workout or procrastinating later.
2. Get your daily intake: Some things go together, like breakfast and
coffee. Why not make it a trio and add a multivitamin?
3. Make breakfast at night: Prepping a healthy breakfast the night before will save time and ensure you get a nutritious meal in the morning, whether you’re eating at home or at your desk.
4. Stick to your routine: No matter if your routine consists of stretching, meditating or checking Facebook, repeating the same ritual each morning tells your brain that it’s time to wake up and get moving.
5. Start on a positive note: Research shows that songs with positive lyrics and a strong beat can improve your mood and motivation, so trade in your alarm clock for your favourite upbeat playlist to set the right tone. ■

Vintage furniture and décor are having a moment. The authentic, grounded appeal of vintage items suit a range of popular design aesthetics, and it’s also a sustainable choice.
Benjamin Moore colour and design expert Sharon Grech shares three tips to help you bring out the beauty of vintage pieces in your home.
If you do not own vintage furniture but love a vintage vibe, consider a couple of accent pieces to help create styled vignettes or “Shelfies.” Style tips include using a bust as a bookend, or a collection of glass bottles on top of a stack of books to style a coffee table.
For wooden pieces, Grech suggests walls painted in cooler hues such as Yarmouth Blue HC-150 or even Bold Blue 2064-10 to bring out the beauty in naturally warm wood and let the nuances and patina of vintage furniture shine.”
If you have vintage furniture in a modern esthetic, Grech says “consider a deep hue like Mink 2112-10 or a bold red like Flamenco CSP-1195 that will make a statement and complement the strong lines of modern furniture.”
Breathe new life into vintage pieces that don’t fit your current décor by repainting them with Advance inte-
rior paint. For a weathered or aged look, consider a whitewash effect on clean, sanded wood furniture. This can be done with a white wood stain or by thinning down paint with glaze or water, using both a brush and rags to apply and then remove excess to achieve the desired effect. Don’t forget to protect the surface after with an acrylic urethane such as Stays Clear. ■

Hiring professional movers can save you a lot of work and aggravation, especially when everyone understands what’s involved.
The best way to ensure that situation is for all parties to communicate effectively.
From the mover’s point-of-view, having a contract that is clear and agreed upon is the number-one way to achieve success.
In Ontario, service agreements with moving companies come under the umbrella of Consumer and Corporate Affairs. When we provide you with a written quote in person, by law, we cannot charge you greater than 10 per cent over the amount stipulated in the contract – unless you change the conditions of the move.
At Two Men and A Truck® – Canada, we price by the hour, whatever it takes. If you call and ask to have 100 boxes moved, and we show up to find 200, of course we have to charge more than what we agreed upon. That is considered a change to the conditions of the move.
Moving takes time, and there are many unexpected situations that
might cause a delay and make your price go up. For example, the person who moves out of your apartment building before you may be running late, and the elevator is tied up longer than you planned. For the mover, the meter is running the entire time.
Sometimes customers neglect to tell us that they are giving a large furniture item to a friend or relative and want us to drop it off on the way. This is a change to the conditions of the move and will cost more. The most common glitch is that the key to the new home isn’t available when it should be, and someone has to drive somewhere to get it. We bill from dock to dock, so anything that increases the time also ups the price. When one of these unexpected happenings occurs, the mover will pull out a form called “Revision to Estimate” to explain the change, and everyone signs it.
Occasionally, we get college or university students asking to quote on moving them from or to separate addresses. This is do-able, as long as they understand they pay for our
BY CHUCK RESNICKcrews’ time. It may well be more cost effective than hiring movers separately to have a number of students belongings all on the same truck.
We hire our own staff rather than casual or day labour. Our employees are trained professionals who are bonded and insured.
Make sure you hire a reputable mover whose crew members are covered by Workers’ Compensation and who has a bona fide phone number linked to their office to call if and when you need to especially on moving day. When all is said and done, customers should check with reliable sources to ensure they are hiring a bona fide professional firm.
At Two Men and A Truck® – Canada, we use the latest in technology when it comes to hardware and software to help us with estimating. A contract lets you and your mover know where you stand. Read it carefully and ask any questions you have. An informed consumer is always a happier one. Visit www.twomen.ca. ■
Chuck Resnick is vice-president, marketing and operations at Two Men and A Truck – Canada®. Chuck ResnickAt the dawn of a new year, many people set goals to motivate themselves to change. But as January 1 drifts further into the rear-view mirror, it can be easy to settle into old habits and forget about the resolutions and goals established at the turn of the calendar.
Staying on course and achieving one’s goals requires discipline. In addition to working hard, men and women who want to realize their goals in the year ahead can take several steps to increase their chances of being successful.
Being specific when choosing goals is important, but it’s equally important to be as specific as possible in regard to developing a plan to realize those goals. Before embarking on a journey to realize your goals, figure out how you’re going to achieve them. Create a new daily or weekly schedule that allots time to realize your goals, seeking input from loved ones whose lives may be affected by your new schedule.
Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, those hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, people can choose veg-
etarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories.
Lifestyle changes can be difficult, so make small changes initially and gradually work toward larger, more significant changes. Starting small can lay a successful foundation, but it’s also important to start immediately. Procrastination can reduce the likelihood of achieving your goals, and the earlier you get started the more quickly you and your loved
ones will adjust to the changes necessary to realize your goals.
Achieving goals is easier when their goals can be among your biggest priorities. Examine your priorities to determine if you can fully commit to goals that may require significant time commitments. Men and women who are already stretched thin may need to recalibrate their goals or make changes in other ar-
eas of their lives before they can fully commit to pursuing new goals.
The dawn of a new year is a great time to set new goals. Bringing those goals to fruition requires careful planning and commitment. ■

Do you want to raise a foodie? If so, take note that a child’s palate is set around age three, making the food we feed them during this time the most influential for their future eating preferences. If you have a picky eater at home, odds are their eating preferences include sugary condiments and sauces that are often paired with fatty and not-so-nutritional foods. And they are not alone: research shows that only two out of five Canadian children eat their “seven a day.”
One of the oldest tricks in the book to improve kid’s nutrition is
to hide vegetables in a meal, like puréed into a tomato sauce or covered with cheese. Honey Dijon mustard is a versatile ingredient that can make introduction to different foods easier. Use it to make a sweet sauce to serve on top of mixed grilled or baked veggies, or simply add a little bit of sweetness into a dish. Combine it with olive oil and vinegar to make a light vinaigrette and give salads a sweet zing, or with yogurt for an easy, healthy dip that proves how tasty veggies can be. After all, we are more likely to eat more vegetables when we actually enjoy them. ■
