The latest design movements advocate for a balance between contemporary allure and mindful choices
A LOOK AHEAD
W
by SARA DUCK
ith many Canadians tightening their proverbial money belts this year, design trends are becoming less about actual purchases and more about inspiration. This year, there is an emphasis on sustainability, with repurposing gaining prominence, challenging the conventional notion of trend-driven consumption. This shift reflects a conscientious move toward enduring style, urging us to balance contemporary inspiration with making mindful choices that align with our tastes and values. “The key lies in finding that delicate balance between the allure of the latest trends and the enduring wisdom of timeless design principles,” says Diana Bastone, owner and principal designer of Diana Bastone Designs. Here are five design movements to keep you inspired all year long.
Maximalist resurgence After a period that saw the dominance of minimalist design, maximalism is making a comeback. Expect bold colours, eclectic patterns and a mix of textures, allowing for more expressive and personalized interiors. “This trend is not for everyone, as this look can feel cluttered to some. If you want to be part of this movement, try it in an enclosed space in your home,” says Bastone. Velvet CUSHION COVER. $23. hm.com
Sustainable sophistication The future of design is conscientious and sustainable. This isn’t merely a trend; it’s a movement. From recycled materials (think thrift store finds and vintage shops) and energy-efficient lighting to furniture crafted with environmental mindfulness, sustainable chic is gaining momentum. Adorn your space with a clear conscience, knowing each element contributes to a greener, more sustainable future. Mid-century MINI-DESK made from sustainably sourced, kiln-dried wood. $749. westelm.ca 18
Renters Guide | Feb. 9–23, 2024
Global fusion “Global fusion decor is the appreciation of different cultures from all over the world and what they create,” says Bastone. In our increasingly interconnected world, globally inspired decor takes centre stage. Drawing inspiration from diverse societies worldwide, this design trend will likely continue making waves, as it celebrates diversity through a mix of textures, patterns and colours from various cultural influences. Biophilic oasis
Tech-integrated living Smart homes redefine themselves beyond mere functionality in 2024. Witness the seamless integration of technology into your decor. Imagine smart furniture adapting to your needs, and augmented reality design tools shaping your space. Welcome to a future where technology and design are in perfect harmony. THE FRAME turns into an art screen when you are not watching TV! The Frame 75-in 4K smart TV by Samsung. $2,298. walamrt.ca
Amidst the hum of the digital age, the pull of natural elements grows stronger. The biophilic design trend invites us to infuse our spaces with nature’s essence. Envision indoor greenery breathing life into your living room, natural textures creating a tactile haven, and sustainable materials grounding your space. “It’s not only the purchase of the plants, but it’s also the act of caring for living plant life that can enrich your mental state,” says Bastone. Beyond aesthetics, this design philosophy fosters an environment where the indoors melds easily with the outdoors, creating an oasis of tranquillity. ADVICE | INSIDER ADVICE
THE BEST REASONS TO RENT AFFORDABILITY
JANE HERMAN
HASSLE-FREE LIVING
When you rent, you’ll never have to call a plumber, electrician or handyman again! Renting frees you from the cost and hassle of all home maintenance and repairs. Empty-nesters can happily shed house-related chores and move closer to entertainment, restaurants and shopping, while young professionals can enjoy a simpler lifestyle and shorter commute.
By renting, you’ll be able to afford to live in an area that might otherwise be out of your price range. And, unless you’re planning on staying in a house for more than five years, you risk losing money if you buy a home. Mortgages are amortized so you’re paying mostly interest in the first few years. Add in property tax, insurance, maintenance costs and the fees associated with selling the house and five years of renting can be significantly less than owning. THE REWARDS OF RENTING
Renting gives you the freedom to invest your savings in stocks, mutual funds, a small business,
your education, or a vacation, instead of a home. LOCK IN UTILITY COSTS
In most cases, you will not have to incur bills when you rent. In many apartments the cost of utilities are included in your rent. Because of fluctuating market prices, utility rates can rise dramatically. As a renter, you will not have to bear these cost increases directly. Jane Herman is a communications consultant who has worked in the rental property industry.

ADVICE | MAKE YOUR MOVE
MOVING ETIQUETTE CHUCK RESNICK
Whether you are moving into or out of a new space, there are certain things to do to make things go as smoothly as possible. Think of the following tips as ‘moving etiquette’. • Let your neighbours at both ends know when to expect the movers to pull into your place. Ensure the movers park and unload to avoid blocking anyone else’s driveway or trespassing on other property.
• If you are booking a residential move, try and select 9 or 10 a.m. for your truck to arrive since people who work 9-to-5 are not home. You are less likely to cause them any inconvenience. • Book elevators in advance in the building you are leaving and the one you will be moving into so you have the benefit of arranging your time comfortably. Check to see if movers are restricted to using specific doors. • Have your pets cared for elsewhere. Moving means doors will be open for long periods, and animals wandering about can be dangerous for them and for the movers. • Most people wonder whether to tip movers. It is not compulsory, so it is totally up to you.
• Most moving companies are good about removing packing materials, crates, boxes, etc. when they leave. If anything is left behind, collect it yourself and dispose of it. • As items are moved out of rooms, sweep, mop and clean what you can. Some people hire cleaners before giving the key to the landlord or new owners. escape
A tropic-chic
D
by SALINA YARA HALABI
reaming of a warm get-away? Bringing the feeling of a tropical-inspired escape into your home may be just the answer. To get the look, lean into beachy vacations for endless inspiration – the rich environment, colours and authentic textures and materials found in exotic destinations are the foundation for creating your own exclusive piece of paradise. Take a cue from the lush landscapes and vibrant ecosystems of tropical locales by incorporating prints and patterns that highlight the natural setting, like palm leaves and distinctive flowers. Add more energy to a room by dipping into a sunset palette of pinks, oranges, and peach for accessories or statement pieces that are worthy of a beachside resort. Incorporate rattan furniture, bamboo accents, and woven details to truly recreate the feel of a tropical haven. Creating your own indoor oasis isn’t complete without lush, green plants – think large leafy options like monstera or bird of paradise. What makes this design approach unique for 2024 are the refined touches that elevate the overall look and give it a more luxurious retreat aesthetic. The space should be timeless, rather than feel like a holiday theme. Grounding this decor style with metallic details and incorporating breezy whites, bold black or deep greens will ensure the final result is classic and chic, while also giving your home a glamorous ‘wish you were here’ vibe.

TIDY UP! Hellen Buttigieg
How to keep the home tidy in just a few minutes a day. There are two tricks you can use to keep your home neat with little effort: SCAN AND GRAB
Any time you leave one room, scan it quickly to see if there’s anything that belongs in the room that you are going to (or along the way). Keep a basket at the bottom of the stairs and any time you come across something that belongs on the second floor, toss it in. At the
end of the day, grab the basket on your way up. Deposit the items in the rooms where they belong right away (or first thing in the morning if you’re too tired). Be sure to take the basket back downstairs on your way down the next day. The key is to get into the habit of doing this daily so the basket doesn’t get too full, otherwise it becomes too time consuming to put everything away. DO IT NOW AND SAVE TIME
Delaying tasks actually creates more work and wastes time. Fold or hang your clothes immediately after the dryer cycle is complete and you will spend less (or no) time ironing. Load the dishwasher
(or wash the dishes) as soon as you’re done eating and you’ll spend less time rinsing, scraping and scrubbing. SMART STORAGE
You’ve probably heard the term ‘a place for everything and everything in its place’. This is so true, but it’s only part of the solution. The second half of this wisdom is to keep things in a logical position. Next time you are trying to find a home for something, instead of asking ‘where should I put it’, ask ‘where would I use it’. kitchen clutter INSPIRATION |
Master the
by PEPPER RODRIGUEZ
If the kitchen is the heart of the home, kitchen clutter may be considered the blockage that leads to heart disease. Taking the analogy further, sometimes the cure is all about exercise and good habits.
A
lberta’s leading home organizing guru, Megan Golightly, has long advocated for living without clutter to achieve a healthy lifestyle. She preaches the gospel of an organized lifestyle at home trade shows across Canada. Through her business, Go Simplified, she has clients throughout North America. The cost of clutter is a frequent subject Golightly talks about in her trade show appearances, most recently at the March 23 Edmonton Home+ Garden Show. She gets into the psychology behind letting go of things and offers tools, awareness and the questions to ask to change the way people deal with clutter in daily life. She spoke with Renters Guide about how letting go in the kitchen is the key to functioning smoothly in this essential room in your home.
30
The cost of clutter
An organized life
Clutter can be costly – not just financially, but also in the way we live. “Clutter takes a toll in our time and energy. You lose money when you buy things that you end up not needing. Clutter adds stress, so it negatively affects our physical health. And when it gets out of hand, it can also put pressure on relationships,” says Golightly. The kitchen is a likely groundzero for clutter, especially for busy families with young children. That’s why Golightly says it’s absolutely essential to get a handle on the matter before it becomes a problem. Sentimentality may be the biggest obstacle in getting rid of clutter or keeping things long after they have outlived their usefulness. “You have to get rid of things to stay organized. Duplicate items, old appliances, things that you haven’t used in the last year; those are all good candidates for the donation bin,” she says. Take coffee mugs. These can overrun a kitchen cabinet in no time. Most are kept for sentimental reasons or for nostalgia’s sake, even when they are hardly used. Golightly’s rule of thumb for mugs is for each family member to have three, so a family of five will have only 15 mugs. “Take a picture of the mugs that mean something to you, then put them in a box for donation.”
Another key hack is to group similar things; keep utensils together, knives should be arranged neatly in a knife block, food containers in one spot. The old adage “everything has a place and there’s a place for everything” works best in the kitchen. Getting started can seem like the biggest hurdle, but don’t think it is insurmountable. “Don’t be overwhelmed by the mess, just get started. Get a garbage bag and go through the kitchen – the pantry, the drawers and cabinets – and pick out stuff that is no longer useful or is just taking up space.” Small appliances used every day stay on the kitchen counter for ease of use, but other ones can be kept out of sight. Coffee makers are a good example of small appliances that need to be on the counter, but clunky appliances such as a toaster oven and food processor are best put away until needed. For families with young children, Golightly says to designate a kitchen drawer for lunch boxes. Arrange similar food containers in the pantry for a pleasing esthetic and to know where to find items when you need them. “In my experience, most people are not disorganized, just overwhelmed by having too much stuff.” Check out Golightly’s decluttering hacks and other tips for an organized life at go-simplified.com.
pro- tip
If you really want to live with less but just cannot let go, put a few of the “rarely used” pots and pans in a box in the basement and mark the date on the top. If you don’t need to retrieve them from the box in six months, take the box to a donation centre and don’t look back. Don’t get in your own way; there is freedom in less clutter.
KITCHEN ORGANIZATION TIPS Quick steps from Megan Golightly to help you go through and declutter what you’re not using. POTS AND PANS
UTENSILS
1
Pull out all your pots and pans
1
2
Match lids with pots
3 4 5
Place a pot or pan on each burner. Notice how many extra you have Ask yourself three questions (Do I like it? Do I use it? Would I buy it again if it broke?) Donate the remaining pots and pans that don’t have a matching lid or are rarely used
Take it all out of the drawer and place similar items together; I call this process putting things into ‘towns’
2
Toss out broken tools. Kitchen space is prime real estate.
3
Take a look at what you have versus what you use
4 5
If you have any gadgets that are rarely used and only do one specific job, it’s a good indicator that you don’t need them. Put back only what you USE

COMMUNITY LIVING, REIMAGINED™
Hello,
INSPIRATION |
at home
yellow!
by SARA DUCK
We deep dive into why decorating with yellow can bring happy vibes to you and your home
D
id you know yellow symbolizes happiness and optimism? It’s no wonder, then, that postpandemic, more designers and design enthusiasts are choosing to decorate with yellow. Could it be a subliminal nod to a hopeful future? After all, different colours have long been known to be powerful mood influencers. Think of how you feel when you cut into a fresh Meyer lemon, see a towering row of sunflowers, or take in an epic sunset. It’s an instant blast of dopamine for your body.
Summer, sunshine and smiles Confession time. I’m obsessed with the yellow colour spectrum. From the softest butter yellow to a deep rich ochre (which happens to be one of the oldest known natural pigments) and every shade in between, I appreciate its adaptability and ability to instantly brighten up a space to make it feel more inviting and cheerful. Yellow is associated with sunshine and summer and brings a sense of warmth and positivity into any room. Its versatility enables it to be paired with a wide range of other hues (for example, lavender, pink and a neutral light gray), making it a popular choice for adding hits of colour or creating vibrant colour schemes. As designer Michelle Berwick of Michelle
Berwick Design aptly puts it: “Yellow is a very strong colour that can make a huge impact on your overall design. So, use it wisely and intentionally.” According to Sharon Grech, a Benjamin Moore colour and design expert, yellow has potential in any room, yet its intensity should be carefully considered. She recommends reserving a vibrant shade for accents or areas that are infrequently used, such as a laundry room and hallway, or as a striking door colour. This way, you can infuse a pop of energy and personality without overwhelming the space or disrupting the serene atmosphere of your main living areas. And, when it comes to amping up yellow and giving it serious design cred, Grech recommends pairing it with bright white and black accents for graphic contrast.
The right hue for you What about choosing the right shade for your home? Grech has some sage advice. “I highly recommend first testing out your yellow selections on the wall with paint samples. In a small paint chip, yellow can be very deceiving and most often is more vibrant than it appears. Once you brush out a big amount, you will have a much better sense of the intensity.” Experience the transformative power of yellow. Let this magical hue visually enhance the atmosphere and turn your home into a sanctuary of happiness and positivity.

ADVICE | APARTMENTALITY
LIFETIME RENTER IT’S A LIFESTYLE
KATHRYN KUSYSZYN
To buy or to rent? You may not think it’s anybody’s plan, but being a lifetime renter is actually a great choice. It’s one that’s already a common experience in cities like New York, Miami, Boston and LA, where owning property is beyond most people’s income level and location is more important that homeownership. It’s also catching on with a generation that doesn’t want to be tied down with financial responsibility instead of the financial freedom to move and pursue different opportunities. It’s hard to fathom for some people. The media is constantly making ownership the most desirable goal, but the reality is, home ownership isn’t for everyone. Conventional wisdom says buy if you can, especially with the current low interest rates, because you build equity. And if you’re young, you need a place to live and to house your children. When you sell, you’ll be able to afford a nicer home or make a profit and downsize. It all sounds great in theory, however, that theory assumes that you will buy at the best time and sell at the best time, thus maximizing your profits. Nor does it factor in the costs of inflation, renovations, maintenance and upkeep, property taxes and so on. In some cases, being a lifetime renter is the preferred option. Here are some scenarios where those who could afford to buy still opt to rent, and why. 38
Renters Guide | Feb. 9–23, 2024
Young professionals more interested in travel than yard work. Couples without children who travel a lot often prefer to ditch the gardening obligations, bills and headaches associated with owning a home. Footloose and fancy free, they would rather put their money into an investment portfolio. Let the landlord deal with utilities and upkeep. They’re off on adventures! Entrepreneurs running a business. They frequently work long hours and struggle to find time for family and friends, never mind house repairs or tenants. Any extra funds they have are being put into building the business, therefore owning a home is not a priority. People in careers that are planning to transition in the next three to five years. If they own a home they may be stuck selling during a down market but have little choice in the matter since it their time to move on. Being a renter makes it easier to pick up and leave when they need to, and practically speaking, their time and energy are focused on their careers.
Families with small children or caring for elderly family members may simply not have the time that home-owning requires. They are choosing the priority of family, and that is certainly a full-time job in and of itself. Giving a rent check and then forgetting about it for 30 days is infinitely easier to manage than the responsibility of home-owning. One of the added benefits of being a lifetime renter in provinces with rent control – your cost of living doesn’t rise at the same rate as inflation. If you keep the same apartment, your rent can only go up by small increments, after 10, 15, 20 years, you’ll find your rent will be greatly under the market rent values in a high-demand area. If you match any of these scenarios, you will likely enjoy being a lifetime renter.
