the importance of self-care
When hearing the words “self-care,” some people may think it means indulging yourself, such as getting a massage or buying yourself a treat. In some ways it can include these types of things, but it is also much more. Whatever your form of self-care, there is real value in taking care of yourself in simple, regular ways. For you, it might be your daily walk through the neighbourhood, a good chat with a friend or a session with a therapist.
Taking care of your physical and mental health can help you
handle difficult experiences, help you feel more confident in yourself and your abilities and improve your ability to regain some control after you’ve been through a tough time.
Of course, many things can affect mental well-being, and they aren’t all within our control. But, having things to look forward to and putting aside time to prioritize yourself are important parts of everyone’s well-being. As many of us learn the hard way, you can’t do your best for anyone else if you’re not showing up for yourself.
If even the small things seem challenging or you’re finding that emotions like sadness, worry, loneliness or anger are long-lasting or interfering with your daily routines, it may be time to reach out for help. This is another important act of self-care itself.
There are many free and credible mental health resources available online, including self-guided therapy, one-on-one counselling with qualified health professionals and moderated peer-to-peer support. You can find more information about these resources at canada.ca/ mental-health. ■

Many people find managing their money to be stressful. But it doesn’t have to be. Here are some tips to help with your financial wellbeing.
track your spending
Budgets are like dental floss. Boring, and sometimes a little painful. They’re also easy to do and worth the effort.
Start with your take-home pay and subtract what you spend on basics like housing, food and other obligations. If there’s no money left, you need to cut back on expenses. Any surplus should go into savings or investments.
be cautious with credit
Credit cards are convenient, and a useful way to build a credit rating. If you pay your full balance each month, you won’t have to pay interest in addition to the amount you’ve borrowed. But the
interest rate on credit card debt is high, so make sure you don’t spend more than you can pay off when the bill is due. If you do come up a bit short, use a lowerinterest line of credit to pay off the balance.
expect the unexpected
Jobs can be lost, sometimes with little or no warning. A serious illness or injury can also put you out of work. For most of us, any one of these scenarios could mean real financial difficulty. It’s important to manage these risks with the right insurance coverage. If you can build one, an emergency fund is also valuable.
look ahead to your retirement
We live in a country that combines the freedom to create a financial life for ourselves and our loved ones, with programs that can provide assistance. Understanding how these programs
work helps ensure you’re covering what you need to with your personal savings, insurance and investments.
The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) is an example. It’s designed to provide you with a portion of your retirement income, in addition to what you can save elsewhere. If you are at least 60 and have made one or more valid contributions, you qualify for CPP benefits. CPP Investments manages the Fund in the best interests of the CPP contributors and beneficiaries. With more than $529 billion (as of September 30, 2022), the Fund is sustainable for the next 75 years.
There is real value in maintaining a long-term perspective. The more you’re able to think about money priorities over your entire adult life – as well as your immediate income and expenses at any given time – the more successful you’ll be in building real financial wellness for many years to come. ■

3 easy tips to stay on top of your nutritional goals
The benefits of a healthy diet go beyond physical appearance. A nutritious diet, supported by a healthy lifestyle, helps us thrive both mentally and physically. Whether you’re trying to hit a certain physical goal or are seeking to
manage a medical condition, below are three easy tips to stay on top of your nutrition.
read your labels
Food labels are more than just a tool to count calories. They also allow us to track ingredients and mac-
ronutrients. That’s especially important if you have allergies or food restrictions because of a medical condition such as kidney disease, diabetes or high blood pressure. Read labels carefully and count your macronutrients so you don’t go over your nutritional limits.
cook for the week ahead
Busy lives make it hard for us to cook daily. Luckily, many recipes are easy to make ahead of time and store in the fridge or freezer. One evening a week try batch cooking a couple of recipes, cutting up veggies for your salads and making an easy snack to grab on the go like eggplant and chickpea bites. Having a few of your meals ready for the week ahead will cut down cooking time and help keep your nutrition on track.
make a plan and stick to it
When we’re at a loss for what to eat, we tend to grab the first thing we see or cave into cravings. In both cases, we tend to stray from nutritional goals. To prevent that, consider creating a structured meal plan to help you avoid impulse eating and make cooking time less stressful. If you struggle to plan ahead, look for online tools that can make it simpler, like the Kidney Community
Kitchen meal planner. It has a variety of recipes that take the stress out of planning a kidney-healthy diet. It’s also a solid tool to track macronutrients and ensure you’re staying within your nutritional limits.
However you plan your food, remember that physical activity should always accompany a healthy diet for an overall healthy lifestyle.

what are bivalent vaccines? what you need to know
You might have heard of bivalent vaccines, but are you still not quite sure what they are? Here’s a quick primer about them and their role in protection against COVID-19.
what is a bivalent vaccine?
• Bivalent means a vaccine is made to target two strains, or variants, of a virus.
• The virus that causes COVID-19 has evolved over time and some of these changes have created new variants of concern, such as Omicron.
• Manufacturers have updated their vaccines to provide better protection against these variants.
• Original COVID-19 vaccines and bivalent vaccines are both very effective in protecting against severe illness and outcomes from COVID-19.
why get a booster?
• Protection from COVID-19 vaccines can decrease over time. Additional doses give you better protection from getting seriously sick or developing complications.
• Even if you’ve been infected already, staying up to date with your vaccines - including booster doses - is recommended for longer-lasting, more effective protection.
• If it has been six months since your last dose or since being in-
fected with COVID-19, it is time to get another booster dose. This is especially important if you are at high risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
Bivalent mRNA vaccines are available to everyone 12 years of age and older. Children 5 to 11 years old can still get a booster dose of an original mRNA vaccine, which continues to provide protection against severe illness and complications.
Talk to your local public health authority to learn more about which vaccines are recommended and available for you. You can find more information at canada.ca/covid-vaccine. ■

how to manage relocating
Moving can be a considerable undertaking. While working professionals who are single or married with no children may find it easier to move than those with families, it’s fair to say that anyone who is moving in the near future has some significant work ahead of them.
In its Job Relocation Survey, the moving company Allied Van Lines found that people move for a variety of reasons. Fifty percent of the 3,500 respondents indicated they relocated for career advancement or money, and many more
indicated they relocated because of a job transfer (12 percent), their companies moved (9 percent) and to be closer to family/relationships (8 percent).
Regardless of what’s motivating a person to relocate, and whether or not they’re relocating on their own or uprooting their families, various strategies can make a forthcoming move go more smoothly.
• Inquire about relocation assistance. The Allied survey found that 63 percent of companies offered relocation packages. That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for
those moving to different parts of the country. Asking about relocation expenses before being offered a job can be tricky, but some companies may mention such packages in their job ads or in their initial meetings with out-of-town candidates.
• Ask what relocation packages cover. Relocation packages vary from company to company. The Allied Survey found that 54 percent of companies that offered such packages covered moving expenses, while 21 percent gave new hires a lump sum of money to use as they deemed necessary.
for a new job
One in five companies even sponsored trips to search for homes. Those who are offered relocation packages should get the specifics so they can start creating moving budgets.
• Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. People who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from cancelling utilities to
changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process.
• Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Individuals who rent their first homes upon relocating can
remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful.
Relocating for a job can be exciting and stressful. But there are ways to make moving go smoothly. ■

how to maintain our apartment buildings
Maintaining apartment buildings is important for tenant safety and well-being. Rentalhousing providers have an obligation to their residents to make sure that they are living in quality units that feel safe and comfortable. Maintaining an apartment building may seem straight forward and easy, but it takes a lot of planning, financial support and dedication from owners, managers, and on-site staff alike to ensure that their tenants live in quality homes. However, maintaining an apartment building is a communitywide responsibility. While rentalhousing providers are seen to have the biggest responsibility when it comes to maintaining an apartment building, the tenants also have a responsibility of supporting that maintenance by cooperating with management to ensure that buildings stay in a good state and repairs are conducted in a timely manner. Our buildings are homes to all of us, and we need to work together to keep them in good condition.
According to the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA), both the rentalhousing providers and the tenants have an obligation to maintain and repair the rental property. It is important to note that these obligations are true for any and all rental agreements.
rental-housing provider responsibilities
The rental-housing provider has responsibilities that include repairing and maintaining the property and meeting property standards. The provider should always keep the building in good condition. Electrical, plumbing and heating systems should be always functioning, as should appliances, windows, doors, locks, lighting, garages, laundry rooms and other amenities offered. Walls, roofs, ceilings, carpets and walkways should be repaired as needed as well to withstand the test of time. In the case that something stops functioning due to wear and tear, the onus is on the provider to replace it.
Additionally, the rental-housing provider needs to keep the property clean, which ranges from making sure common areas are tidy and clean to taking care of any pest issues. Property standards are outlined in municipal bylaws and provincial maintenance standards.
Rental-housing providers should also make sure that their building follows fire safety laws as outlined by local fire departments.
Finally, the provider should also maintain and not interfere with vital services, which include hot/ cold water, fuel, electricity, gas and heat (during specific months).
The provider needs to make sure that they are always supplying these services regardless of specific situations such as overdue rent.
tenant responsibilities
The tenant should keep their rental unit clean. As long as the state of the unit does not have an effect on other tenants, the cleanliness of their unit is generally left to their own judgement.
In case of damages that are not due to normal wear and tear, but due to damage by the tenant or their guests, the tenant will be required to pay for the repair or take care of it themselves.
The maintenance of the apartment building relies on the strong relationship between the rentalhousing provider and the tenant. It is great communication between the two parties that ensures the maintenance of the building. If there is a problem, the first thing a tenant should do is notify their rental-housing provider to help solve the issue. And rental-housing providers should do the same thing. If the tenant is not keeping up with standards, the rental-housing provider should ask the tenant to make changes as necessary to fix the problem.
For more information on how to maintain your apartment building whether you are a tenant or a rentalhousing provider, visit the Tribunals Ontario website. ■
— The Federation of Rental-Housing Providers of Ontariomoving contracts
Hiring professional movers can save you a lot of work and aggravation, especially when everyone understands what’s involved.
The best way to ensure that situation is for all parties to communicate effectively.
From the mover’s point-of-view, having a contract that is clear and agreed upon is the number-one way to achieve success.
In Ontario, service agreements with moving companies come under the umbrella of Consumer and Corporate Affairs. When we provide you with a written quote in person, by law, we cannot charge you greater than 10 per cent over the amount stipulated in the contract – unless you change the conditions of the move.
At Two Men and A Truck® – Canada, we price by the hour, whatever it takes. If you call and ask to have 100 boxes moved, and we show up to find 200, of course we have to charge more than what we agreed upon. That is considered a change to the conditions of the move.
Moving takes time, and there are many unexpected situations that
might cause a delay and make your price go up. For example, the person who moves out of your apartment building before you may be running late, and the elevator is tied up longer than you planned. For the mover, the meter is running the entire time.
Sometimes customers neglect to tell us that they are giving a large furniture item to a friend or relative and want us to drop it off on the way. This is a change to the conditions of the move and will cost more. The most common glitch is that the key to the new home isn’t available when it should be, and someone has to drive somewhere to get it. We bill from dock to dock, so anything that increases the time also ups the price. When one of these unexpected happenings occurs, the mover will pull out a form called “Revision to Estimate” to explain the change, and everyone signs it.
Occasionally, we get college or university students asking to quote on moving them from or to separate addresses. This is do-able, as long
BY CHUCK RESNICKas they understand they pay for our crews’ time. It may well be more cost effective than hiring movers separately to have a number of students belongings all on the same truck.
We hire our own staff rather than casual or day labour. Our employees are trained professionals who are bonded and insured.
Make sure you hire a reputable mover whose crew members are covered by Workers’ Compensation and who has a bona fide phone number linked to their office to call if and when you need to especially on moving day. When all is said and done, customers should check with reliable sources to ensure they are hiring a bona fide professional firm.
At Two Men and A Truck® – Canada, we use the latest in technology when it comes to hardware and software to help us with estimating. A contract lets you and your mover know where you stand. Read it carefully and ask any questions you have. An informed consumer is always a happier one. Visit www. twomen.ca. ■
