How to help kids learn to love
R
eading is a passion for many people. But even avid readers may not know just how far back their love of reading stretches. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children who find pleasure in reading have the potential to become lifelong readers. In addition, studies have shown that reading to children can help kids become familiar with sounds, words and language, helping them in their earliest stages of cognitive development.

So, adults who love books might be able to trace their passion for pageturners to those times their mothers and fathers read aloud to them as youngsters. Parents who want their children to learn to love reading can rely on various techniques to accomplish that goal. Make reading a routine. Routine is a necessity for parents, helping children learn when it's time to eat, play and go to sleep, among other things. Parents can include reading
to their children as part of their daily routines. As noted, doing so will promote language skills and cognitive development while also acclimating children to books and providing valuable time for them to bond with their parents. Create a distraction-free reading environment. When reading to children, parents can create an environment with little to no distractions. This allows kids to focus on their parents' voices as well as the story they're being told. Parents can turn

reading off the television and the radio when reading to their kids. In addition, moms and dads should leave smartphones or tablets in another room so they aren't distracted by alerts or tempted to check for incoming messages or emails. Read aloud together. Some children may shy away from reading if they struggle in their initial efforts to read. That does not mean kids won't ultimately enjoy reading, it just means a little more effort may be required on parents' part to
help kids overcome any issues they have. Reading aloud to children can help little ones learn how to become good readers, as they will learn how to pronounce words and form sentences. Kids who know how to read can be encouraged to read to their parents, which can instill self-esteem. If kids struggle with certain words or sentences when reading aloud, parents can read those words and/or sentences aloud to them and ask them to repeat the phrases back.
Let kids pick their own books. When reading to youngsters, whether they're babies, toddlers or already in school, parents can let sons and daughters choose their own books. Children might be especially enthusiastic about reading if they're allowed to choose their own books and stories. Reading can benefit children from the earliest stages of their lives all the way through adulthood. Parents can take various steps to foster a love of reading in their children. ■ — Metro Creative 4Rent.ca

how to manage
relocating for a new job M oving can be a considerable undertaking. While working professionals who are single or married with no children may find it easier to move than men and women with families, it’s fair to say that anyone who is moving in the near future has some significant work ahead of them. In its Job Relocation Survey, the moving company Allied Van Lines found that people move for a variety of reasons. Fifty percent of the 3,500 respondents indicated they relocated for career advancement or money, and many more indicated they relocated because of a job transfer (12 percent), their companies moved (9 percent) and to be closer to family/ relationships (8 percent). Regardless of what’s motivating men and women to relocate, and whether or not they’re relocating on their own or uprooting their families, various strategies can make a forthcoming move go more smoothly. • Inquire about relocation assistance. The Allied survey found that 63 percent of companies offered relocation packages. That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for adults moving to different parts of the country.
Asking about relocation expenses before being offered a job can be tricky, but some companies may mention such packages in their job ads or in their initial meetings with out-of-town candidates. • Ask what relocation packages cover. Relocation packages vary from company to company. The Allied Survey found that 54 percent of companies that offered such packages covered moving expenses, while 21 percent gave new hires a lump sum of money to use as they deemed necessary. One in five companies even sponsored trips to search for homes. Adults who are offered relocation packages should get the specifics, so they can start creating moving budgets. • Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track
of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process. • Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful. Relocating for a job can be exciting and stressful. But there are ways to make moving go smoothly. ■ — Metro Creative

green move
five tips for a clean,
P
BY CHUCK RESNICK
rotecting the environment is an important concern for consumers and businesses alike, but many don’t realize that moving can have a positive impact on the environment. Waste caused by the moving process not only stems from packing supplies, but also from the waste accumulated over many years within a home or office. Both sources can be extremely taxing on the environment if not properly managed. So, here are some suggestions on how to make your move a cleaner, greener process.
plan ahead
Waiting until the last minute to prepare for a move often makes environmental concerns an afterthought. Start early so you have the extra time to sort through recyclable items in the garage, kitchen and basement for delivery to recycling depots prior to moving day. Typically your garage, basement and attic contain the highest concentration of recyclable waste so start the sorting process there first.
Consider holding a garage sale or donating gently used tools or small appliances to a charity rather than have them end up in a land fill site.
not be thrown-out with your regular garbage. Look up the specialized recycling depots for toxic products in your city.
research
organize
Survey local recycling options to find the most convenient solution for recyclables. Many cities offer curbside pick-up or “sort and drop” depots. Visit www.earth911.com for a list of local organizations that can dispose of all types of recyclable materials.
be mindful of hazardous material
As you clean out your garage and basement in preparation to move, be conscientious about the kinds of materials being packed to move with you and which items are to be disposed. Toxic items, such as paint, batteries, house cleaning products, automobile oils, pesticides and fertilizers are dangerous and cannot be transported in the back of a commercial moving truck. Also consider these items can-
Prepare recyclables by organizing into categories: plastic, glass, aluminum, paper, cardboard, etc. Look up the requirements of the local recycler to see if there are any additional steps needed to prepare recyclables beforehand.
reuse
Do not throw away used boxes when the move is complete. A wellmade corrugated box is great for storage or may be reused for a future move. Contact local schools or charity organizations, such as women’s shelters, scout troops, and food banks to ask if they need boxes to redistribute donated items. Donating gently used boxes not only reduces waste, but can be a big help in support of a good cause. Visit twomen.ca today to find a location near you. ■
