NHHS Ž W GET KIDS ON A HEALTHY TRACK Childhood obesity is a serious medical issue affecting children around the world, but notably in North America. While the issue has been around for decades, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says North American children and teenagers have ĐÐûâÃööÿ ¯ öÐÍâÐĶ »¯âû Ðâ»óïöà in weight gain since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
A STUDY PUBLISHED IN SEPTEMBER 2021 FOUND THE PERCENTAGE OF OBESE CHILDREN AND TEENS INCREASED TO 22 PER CENT COMPARED WITH 19 PER CENT BEFORE THE PANDEMIC. Younger school-aged children have been among the hardest hit during the pandemic. A study published in September 2021 found the percentage of obese children and teens increased to 22 per cent compared with 19 per cent before the pandemic. The CDC looked at the BMI of study subjects between March 1, 2020, and November 30, 2020.

One of the study’s authors, Dr. Alyson Goodman of the CDC’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, described the results as “substantial and alarming.” Being less physically active, overweight and eating the wrong foods can start children on a path toward problems that once were only considered conditions of adulthood, namely hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol, offers the Mayo Clinic. To reverse course, parents, guardians and educators can focus on helping children become more physically Ķ ûȨ LÏà ÌæÜÜæĐÐâÍ ¯óà ¯ ÌÃĐ Đ¯Ēö to do so. Encourage participation in sports or other physical activities Sports practices, games, competitions, and other activities may keep children moving for an
hour or more several days per week. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics states that only 25 per cent of children get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day. Emphasize a fun activity with a focus on movement that produces shortness of breath, body warmth and sweat. These are indicators that the heart rate is really pumping. Use exercise as a reward and not a punishment Make exercise something kids can look forward to. Reward a job well done on a test with extra time biking with friends or a hiking trip to a scenic national park. Kids will be begin to associate exercise with fun. Offer a variety of foods Kids who eat a variety of foods are more likely to get the nutrients
Limit screen time Children may be inclined to entertain themselves by heading for the television, mobile phone or tablet first, especially after a year-plus of being stuck indoors. But parents can make a concerted effort to limit kids’ screen time in favor of more physically challenging pursuits. Teach healthy eating habits A Harris Poll survey conducted on behalf of the American Psychological Association found that 61 per cent of respondents aged 18 and older reported a median weight gain of 15 pounds during the pandemic. Teach children that weight loss is accomplished when more calories are burned than consumed. Pay attention to portion sizes and explain how beverages like fruit juices can be sneaky sources of extra calories. Children may need a little Ãđûó¯ ÏÃÜð ÍÃûûÐâÍ Ķ ûȣ ÃöðûЯÜÜĒ if they gained weight during the pandemic. Teaching healthy habits now can help kids enjoy healthy futures.

FRQŽ GHQFH HOW TO HELP YOUR DAUGHTER BUILD STRONG H . ɖ HL 3 WORDS BY - L 3 ..N3 It is unlikely that anyone enters adulthood unscathed by insecurities developed throughout ûÏÃÐó »ÏÐÜ¿Ïææ¿Ȩ ö ÐâöÐÍâÐĶ »¯âû as this self-doubt may seem, weak self-esteem throughout adolescence may prevent you from maturing into a selfassured adult. As a parent, you feel responsible for seamlessly guiding your daughter through her testing transition into adulthood. As a result, each parent will take a unique approach to building öÃÜÌɍ»æâĶ ¿Ãâ»Ã Ðâ ûÏÃÐó »ÏÐÜ¿óÃâȣ often inspired by their respective childhood challenges. However, the key to building an empowering household lies in cultivating a culture of acceptance, that celebrates your daughter as her most authentic self. While the journey to building strong selfesteem must ultimately be driven by your daughter, it is your role to lay out the necessary tools to ease her through these trying years of puberty. Support Her in Pursuing Passion Driven Activities Íóïû Đ¯Ē ûæ ó¯Ðöà ¯ »æâĶ ¿Ãâû daughter is by allowing her to explore her unique interests. with similar values and passions. Whatever her niche is, it is extremely validating to feel part of a collective of like-minded people who celebrate your daughter for her individuality. Celebrate Her Accomplishments As a parent, it is most meaningful to complement your daughter on elements of her life that are in her control, rather than features that are beyond her control. This involves celebrating her accomplishments and character traits that she has worked to develop, rather than how she inherently is. Although it often stems from a place of love and affection, comments on your
daughter’s appearance can breed insecurity, even if they were intended positively. Conversely, cherishing her strong personality and personal successes are guaranteed to make her feel seen, and self-assured in her abilities. Create Room for Error Many areas of your daughter’s life will demand a standard of perfection, whether that be academia or competitive sports. An invaluable trait as a parent is to not only tolerate, but encourage your daughter to make mistakes throughout adolescence. This will equip her with valuable lessons on how to respond to failure and confront challenges, which she
Practice Positive Self-Talk Although unintentional, parents often impose insecurities on their children by making self-critical comments. When young adults see this behaviour practiced by adults who they idolize, they normalize this self-deprecating dialogue. To avoid this monkeysee monkey-do pattern of self-punishment, parents should work on practicing constructive and uplifting self-talk. By setting a standard for self-acceptance, your children will seek to mirror this behaviour. By rewiring the way they see themselves and speak about their imperfections, they will become more forgiving about their faults and improve their self-esteem. Ask her for Advice Most parents overlook the value of their daughters’ wise perspectives on adult problems, which may add to their feelings of inadequacy throughout these transitionary years. An effective way to make your daughter’s voice feel heard and valued is by asking her for advice on issues that you face as an adult. By seeking out her unique perspective on problem-solving, she will develop »æâĶ ¿Ãâ»Ã Ðâ ÏÃó æðÐâÐæâö ¯â¿ abilities that will last a lifetime.

It’s not simply about being compliant. Establishing patterns for respect can be challenging because there are no shortages of situations in popular culture - from movies to music to social media - that complicate, if not compromise, parents’ efforts to teach children respect. However, there are ways to teach kids how to respect their parents. Be a good role model Children learn by examining the world around them. If parents are rude to restaurant servers, cut

For older children who can verbalize their aches and pains, it still may be challenging for parents to get to the root of the problem. Parents should always consult physicians when their children report feeling pain, but the following are some of the more common pain sources. Growing pains Preteens and some teenagers go through a common condition dubbed “growing pains.” This can occur in children as young as preschoolers. Growing pains may be characterized by cramps, aches and muscle pains in the legs that tend to occur in the late afternoon or evenings, offers WebMD. The pain may be mild or intense, even interfering with the child’s ability to get a good night’s rest. Despite the name, there is no Ķ óá ÃďпÃâ»Ã ûϯû ÍóæĐÐâÍ ð¯Ðâö are linked to growth spurts. pains generally resolve with rest, massage, or a warm bath, and may stop occurring entirely within a year or two. Abdominal pain There may be several causes of abdominal or stomach pain in children. Kids Health says one of the most common reasons for abdominal pain is constipation. Children who do not have regular ºæĐÃÜ áæďÃáÃâûö æó Ķ â¿ ûÏÃÐó stool is hard when passed may be constipated. Changes to eating habits can precipitate constipation, as can inadequate hydration. WebMD says about one out of three children is seen by a doctor for abdominal pain by the time they are age 15, but only a small number of these children have serious problems.
Food poisoning, appendicitis, gastrointestinal distress, and the preliminary stages of menstruation also may be at the root of abdominal pain. Concerned parents should have doctors rule out more serious conditions if pain is ongoing. Earache The National Institutes of Health says that children are more likely than adults to get ear infections, which can lead to ear pain. SCHOOLS AND MENTAL HEALTH WORDS BY DR. DAVID B. HARLEY, ROBERT LAND ACADEMY If there is one thing that the last two years of the pandemic and its attack upon our physical health has taught us, it is the importance of mental health. Nowhere has this been more apparent than the effects upon our children and the growing disengagement from school both socially, emotionally, ¯â¿ ÐâûÃÜÜûûý¯ÜÜĒ ºĒ öÐÍâÐĶ »¯âû numbers of students–especially boys. Remote learning has taken its toll and continues to do so not merely in terms of its immediate impact but also in terms of the downward spiral that it has initiated with longstanding implications. COVID may have brought the problem in focus, but it has not created this problem – it exacerbated an existing problem. At the beginning of the 20th century, the British philosopher and mathematician Bertrand Russell wrote, “Men understand best what most interests them, and their interests are derived from their emotions.” From this statement it can also be inferred that if understanding is derivative from emotions, lack of understanding is equally so. The emotional well-being of students provides the essential foundation for their successful education. Intellectual understanding, as well as the absorption of knowledge, is very much determined by the emotional engagement in those processes. The interplay between intellect and emotion determines both functionality and dysfunctionality. 18

The last decades have seen an ever-growing problem of boys ¿ÐöÃâͯÍÐâÍ Ìóæá ö»ÏææÜ óÃķ ûûÿ by the growing number of boys in öðÃ»Ð¯Ü ¯â¿ áæ¿ÐĶ ÿ ¯»¯¿Ãáл programs, requiring behavioural intervention and being diagnosed ĐÐûÏ ÜïóâÐâÍ ¿ÃĶ »ÐÃâ»ÐÃöȣ ¯ö well as the seemingly ever decreasing number of boys entering university as opposed to girls. Approaching these issues from the point of addressing learning from an intellectual point of view is far from adequate. Clearly what is needed is emotional support not in the form of guaranteeing success or eliminating competition, but rather Ðâ ºýÐÜ¿ÐâÍ ûÏà »æâĶ ¿Ãâ»Ã ûæ û¯ÛÃ
on challenges. In environments Ðâ ĐÏÐ»Ï ºæĒö Ķ â¿ âæ ď¯Üп¯ûÐæâȣ self-invalidation is sure to follow along with other issues such a depression and anxiety disorders. Encouraging and empowering our youth to take on problems constructively is what a therapeutic approach is all about. It involves developing the resilience to tackle problems through encouragement and counselling, coupled with the abilities to self-regulate and óÃķ ûûÐďÃÜĒ ¯ööÃöö ¯»ûÐæâö óÃܯûÐďà to their desired results and readjust accordingly. If it doesn’t work, why do you do it? Are you the captain of your own ship or merely a passenger?
There are at present good grounds to argue that all teacher training should involve a working knowledge of cognitive behavioural therapy and where possible, dialectical behavioural therapy. The equating of school performance with ability is a poor measure of the student but it is a practice that often results in the student believing that they are what they see on a report card. A sense of hopelessness is easy to develop and become the self-limiting measure of one’s own worth. The attitude towards intellectual capacity should be ďÐÃĐÿ Ðâ ûÃóáö æÌ ðÏĒöл¯Ü Ķ ûâÃöö where exercise, routine and effort yield results and targeted objectives once met will be exceeded. cityparent.com

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER GIVING BIRTH TO A PREMATURE BABY Infants born before the 37th week of gestation are considered premature. Initially, caring for children born prematurely, often referred to as “preemies,” may differ from parenting a full-term baby. It is important that parents recognize this and acknowledge that premature babies require different care than those born at full-term. The average full-term baby weighs around seven pounds, ºýû ¯ ðóÃáÐà á¯Ē ĐÃÐÍÏ Ķ ďà pounds or less. A preemie may look different from a full-term infant. When compared to fullterm babies, preemies’ heads will seem much larger in relation to the rest of their bodies. Also, preemies tend to have less fat, so their skin can appear thin and transparent. His or her features will seem sharper and less round than the features of babies born at full-term. The absence of protective fat means a preemie will quickly get cold in normal room temperatures. It’s common for premature infants to be placed in an incubator (isolette) or under a radiant warmer to help maintain body temperature. Depending on how prematurely they were born, preemies may spend days or weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit (NNICU). Preemies sometimes have trouble breathing due to immature respiratory systems. Respiration and heart rate will be monitored, and oxygen may be supplied to help ensure the organs get an adequate supply. A

continued positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine may be used temporarily to assist in breathing as well, according to the Houstonbased Sprout Pediatrics. Parents may be temporarily prevented from holding their infant while they are in the NNICU. However, once the child becomes stable, and only after careful sanitation, it’s possible for new moms and dads to hold their baby. Visitors to the NICU likely will not be allowed to hold the child, however. A preemie must meet certain criteria in order to be discharged from the hospital: · Maintain body temperature in an open crib for at least 24 to 48 hours, depending on how premature the baby was at birth. · Feed by bottle or breast without supplemental tube feedings. · Gain weight steadily.
While Nemours KidsHealth ® notes that most premature infants do not need specialized medical support after leaving the hospital, regular medical care and evaluation are advised. That’s because preemies may be vulnerable to apnea and other breathing issues. Parents may need extra equipment to monitor breathing at home. Preemies often need extra nourishment because they have to catch up to the growth of full-term infants. A concentrated formula that accounts for immature intestinal development may be necessary. Patience is necessary since preemies require smaller, more frequent feedings. Preemies have delicate immune systems, so they may be vulnerable to viral infections post-discharge.
