Study space
Creating the best
learning space BY LORRAINE PELLEY WITH THE COUNTRY in full pandemic mode and many parents now home schooling their children, creating a suitable workspace in your home will help make home learning an easier and more positive experience for you and your child. Working at a dining room or kitchen table, in a living room, or other area in your home might be an ideal short-term solution, but not for long term home study because these spaces have many distractions. Creating a designated learning area will help your children focus more on their schoolwork. When it comes to designing a home study area, your options are limitless. Whether it is a separate room or nook, a learning station in one area of a room separated by a room divider, or a comfy chair by a shelf full of books in a quiet corner, the home classroom can be set up almost anywhere. Even if you do not have a separate room to turn into study area, you can still create a beautiful space your children will love. Regardless 6
EDUCATION GUIDE 2021
at home for you and your child of where your designated space is, there are some common features that should be part of your home study area.
Minimize Distractions Your home is filled with stuff that will easily distract your child from their schoolwork. Toys, TVs, gaming systems, phones, pictures, and even food items will quickly draw your child’s attention away from their assignments. Create a learning area away from the distracting furnishings and with minimal décor so your children will have an easier time focusing on their work. Bins, tubs, or cupboards are great additions for storing your belongings nearby while reducing the clutter.
Create a Welcoming Area Your home learning area should be a welcoming place that your child wants to spend time in. Ask them to help you set up the area so they can take an active role in designing and furnishing a learning space that they will like and to spend time in.
Ergonomically Designed Working at a kitchen or dining room table might be handy once in a while, but for long-term studying, these places add unnecessary back and neck strain. Ergonomically designed spaces improve posture and reduce muscles strain when working. The desk height should be slightly below their elbows so it is easier to write or complete a handson activity, chairs should be low enough that their feet are flat on the ground. The chair backs should be firm and naturally support the back so your child can sit comfortably while working. Laptops or other technology screens should be placed so they are level with your child’s visual field to reduce neck strain.
Lighting A well-lit area reduces eye strain and makes it easier to see the work. If you’re learning space does not have ample natural light, place a desk, or floor lamp in your room to provide proper lighting to your child’s home learning space.

Teacher voices
The teacher POV The pros and cons of digital learning BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM BEING A TEACHER TODAY is different. While some are happy to embrace virtual learning, others hope the traditional bricks and mortar settings will return. Kevin, a teacher with the Toronto District School Board’s (TDSB) Virtual Secondary School, says, “Over the last five years, many teachers have been digitizing their courses. For this reason, most teachers have risen to the challenges of virtual school or remote learning. When I first found out I was teaching virtual school, a few of us met virtually, and we started creating content. I won’t lie, this hasn’t been easy, and I’ve been extremely stressed out at times. I’ve been up until all hours of the night creating content or marking. Having the support from my colleagues has been comforting.” But virtual teaching has also opened up the classroom to more than just his students. Today’s homeroom has included family members either participating or inadvertently photobombing a class in session. “It’s all in a day’s work,” says Kevin. “I was teaching an introduction to Shakespeare and Elizabethan England. I mentioned to the class that actors were always male at that time because women were not allowed to be on stage 8
EDUCATION GUIDE 2021
publicly. Suddenly one of my students said, ‘Wait, my dad just heard you say that. You mean even Juliet was played by men? My dad is shocked and said that’s pretty cool.’”
The virtual platform has also engaged parents to play an even more critical role. “Some of my students have individual learning needs requiring extra support. One parent was in class every day with her daughter. She started referring to herself as my “parent educational assistant,” and I appreciated that we were able to work together to create material that was catered to her daughter. Unfortunately, not all parents are able to devote
so much time to their children during the workday. It’s a really tough situation.”
So, is online learning for everyone? “I have students who are thriving and others who absolutely hate it, and everyone in between. It doesn’t always work for students with special educational needs who are used to certain in-school routines. I have some students who like the routine while others like that they can roll out of bed and log-on and not have social pressures. They can just learn.” As for teachers, admittingly, Kevin says it has been stressful, and teacher’s emotional and work burnout has been quite real. “It is hard for me to know if students understand the material over a computer. When I am physically in a room with students, I can hear their voices, read the room, and see their assurance or confusion. I miss that human connection piece most of all.” For Kevin, creating welcoming avatars was a way for him to create a fun environment. To all those avatars teaching our kids – thank you.

THE ImPORTANCE Of PARTICIPATING IN SCHOOl
sports/activities BY mARYlENE VESTERGOm “We need to stay as healthy as we can in every way,” says Dr. Greg Wells, Ph.D. and a senior associate scientist at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. “We know participating in sports and being active plays an important role towards our mental, physical and emotional health. COVID-19 has presented challenges for all of us and especially our children.” Toronto District School Board’s teachers Risa and Shelly, who teach health and physical education, agree it’s been difficult. “Juggling the same curriculum pre-COVID, with COVID restrictions and now completely online hasn’t been easy,” says Risa. “Participation and student engagement has decreased. So much of our energy is spent making the virtual classroom a safe space for the students to feel welcomed and engaged – because it’s easy to hide behind a computer. We use tools like Ed Puzzle with our yoga class, which requires them to answer questions, so at least I know they’re still in the same room as their computer.” Shelly agrees and hopes by providing various activities for students to try, they’ll find something they’ll love and continue to use throughout this pandemic. “Sometimes we dance ‘as if no one is watching,’ we try Zumba, yoga, Pilates, Tae-Bo, even at-home sports challenges with limited equipment.” But there are other challenges. Being physically active with peers is one-way students can make friends, connect and develop that sense of class community. While some kids can get out for a physically distanced walk mid-day, some are not allowed outside, depending on families’ comfort levels. “Some live-in units without balconies or are living in multigen12 EDUCATION GUIDE 2021 1

I try to give them ideas for exercises they can do within the size of a yoga mat. And even though they may be sharing space with a sibling or other family members, who knows, that might even encourage family participation,” suggests Risa. The ParticipACTION Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth identifies families as critical influencers in children’s physical activity and healthy habits. “The most important thing parents can do,” says Wells, “is to set the stage that it’s the family who is physically active and take the lead by example. If the
parent is into yoga and children see that, eventually, they may join in.” There are many resources and YouTube videos online available to help kids and parents find creative ways to be physically active. “We know that exercise improves the function of the immune system,” says Wells. “It’s never been more important, from a mental and general physical health perspective but also from an immune health perspective, for us to be physically active. We can see the light at the end of the tunnel – we just need to get through – in the dark of winter and stay physically active – together, safely.”

The Cheerleading Book: The Young Athletes Guide BY MARYleNe VeSTeRGOM
Consider two and a half minutes jammed packed with stunts with athletes flying through the air, including intricate pyramids resembling a carefully designed game of Jenga. While you’re at it, throw in a few jumps and tumbling moves tightly choreographed in a fast-paced, seamless routine. Are you out of breath just visualizing those moves? Welcome to the sport of competitive all-star cheerleading. And yes, it’s a sport. “People don’t realize how difficult and intricate our sport is, and that it is a sport,” says world champion coach Ali Moffatt, who, along with Alana Potter, are the founders, owners and head coaches of Cheer Sport Sharks. “I’m thankful that stereotype of just being on the sidelines, cheering on a team, waving pom-poms has changed,” says Moffatt. Raising the profile of competitive cheer has always been at the forefront for both Moffatt and Potter of Cambridge, Ontario. They have been running gyms for 18 years, with seven locations across the province. As of today, their teams have won four world championships, as well as many top-10 finishes. With the success of their clubs and being the subject of the 2016 Netflix reality show Cheer Squad, it was time they penned The Cheerleading Book: The Young Athletes Guide. They wanted to help drive home their sport’s athleticism and provide a detailed resource for coaches and athletes alike when they’re not in the gym. “The Cheerleading Book is a great combination of verbal descriptions as well as pictures. Our sport is quite detailed, and we wanted to make sure -16 EDUCATION GUIDE 2021
People don’t realize how difficult and intricate our sport is, and that it is a sport whether you’re just starting in cheer, or an elite competitor or coach – that we captured the essence of each move. The athletes featured are world champions, so showcasing their excellent technique speaks to the book’s credibility and accuracy.” They were also lucky to collaborate with Corey Rickett, a gymnast with over 20 years of experience who has trained under Olympian Nadia Comaneci and Bart Conner, and is a stunt and tumbling expert and a world champion cheer coach. Along with the illustrations and the step-by-step guides, Moffatt and Potter wanted to create a teaching aid that also detailed the importance of physical training, mental exercises and teambuilding strategies that lead to success. These
are essential building blocks to anyone interested in getting involved in the competitive world of all-star cheerleading. For 16-year-old Amelia Bush, of Cambridge, Ontario, and a member of the Cheer Sport Sharks AllStar Cheerleading Gym, being involved in this sport is about being part of a unique team experience. “If everyone doesn’t do their part, the team won’t succeed. The dedication, perseverance, hard work, etc., needed for this sport are skills that can be applied to all aspects of life, and I would encourage any young girl or boy to give it a try.” Moffatt couldn’t agree more and has seen first-hand what the sport offers these young girls and boys. The Cheerleading Book provides a window into what it takes to be a part of this unique form of athleticism with tips for any budding cheer athlete. Cheer has come a long way, and as Moffatt stresses, it’s an inclusive sport. “There is no Michael Jordan on cheer teams – and since teams are dependent on various skills, teams are stronger when everyone’s included and plays a role. To help with the lifts, you need a strong base. We also need flyers that are flexible and fearless soaring through the air, and we need back spots that are reliable and are made up of some of our taller athletes so they can reach as high as possible on the stunts and be the supportive anchor. So, as you can see, I just listed all different body types, different abilities and strengths that come together to allow our sport to happen. Our book is their how-to guide to excellence. Oh, and did I mention – how much fun they will have?”

Tips
Encourage and improve YOUR CHILD’S READING
BY LORRAINE PELLEY READING IS A VITAL SKILL and one of the most important keys to your child’s current and future success. Reading helps develop language skills and comprehension, it increases a child’s attention span, and promotes analytical thinking For some children, learning to read can be a difficult and frustrating experience. However, there are many ways you can incorporate reading into your day 20 EDUCATION GUIDE 2021
so it can be a more positive and organic learning experience.
Create a positive reading space Some children develop a natural love for reading while other children completely dislike it. Creating a positive, comfortable space to read will help make an unpleasant task more enjoyable. You can help your child design their own read-
ing retreat by covering two chairs with a blanket to create makeshift tent, designing a designated reading area complete with comfortable chair by a shelf filled with books, or placing large pillows in one corner of a family or bedroom.
Have a variety of books available Whether you buy books regularly from a school book club, take regu-
Reading should be a positive experience that encourages and engages your child
lar weekly trips to the library, or join a book club, having a variety of books close by will make it easier to sit and read every day.
Make it a daily activity It is important to develop a daily reading routine that is consistent and works with your home and child’s schedule. Daily routines will give your child time to develop strong reading skills through regular practice and repetition.
Don’t just read books Written words are found everywhere so there are plenty of opportunities to naturally incorporate reading into your day. Encouraging your child to read signs, instructions, labels, recipes, internet articles, magazines, emails, games;
lists, texts, subtitles, and other written products will allow them to develop their reading skills more frequently while showing them how vital reading is to daily life.
Keep it positive Reading should be a positive experience that encourages and engages your child. You can turn a frustrating task into a more positive experience by helping them choose books at their reading level about topics they like, set weekly goals, and always give praise and encouragement.
Find books that excite them Children want to read books that interest them. Whether the books are about a
certain theme, genre, character, or by a specific author, children will be more eager to read a book that piques their interest. Have a variety of books at home for them to choose from, help your child pick books they like so they will feel more motivated to read, and visit your local library regularly so they have a variety of topics to choose from.
Make it quality family time Reading should be quality time for you and your child. Whether it is part of a designated activity like cooking or playing a game, part of your nighttime routine, or a planned weekly outing, turning reading into quality family time not only helps your child learn but it also creates lifelong memories. Students receive certificates once they’ve planted 10 trees, another at 20, and again at 50, creating a sense of pride in their efforts to make the world a better place. With educators from Canada, the U.S, Ecuador and Singapore, the Bloom Class team has created incredible virtual extracurricular programs for students between the ages of 3 and 14. Some upcoming programs include Yoga with Amanda, Our World Through the Eyes of Monet, Musical Storytelling, Coding Club, Stay Organized, Book Club and their newest addition: Dreaming Big. The Growing Kit
Helping parent’s engage in meaningful, positive conversations with their young children PARENTS WITH YOUNG CHILDREN can find it challenging to talk to their youngsters, especially about difficult or emotional events. Finding the right words to formulate questions in a positive, encouraging manner does not come easy for everyone. Bud Sprout Bloom’s new product The Growing Kit can help. Designed for children between the ages of zero to ten years, The Growing Kit consists of 60 affirmation cards. The first 20 cards are designed for parents to use with their children to help start meaningful conversations while promoting self-love and confidence. The other 40 affirmation cards are interactive cards
that the parent or child can give out to loved ones, friends, a teacher, neighbour, or anyone they feel needs it. The 20 affirmation cards include a daily affirmation, a question, and an eyecatching picture designed to help children visually identify with their feelings. By placing the kit in front of their child and asking them to pick a card, parents can let their child and lead the conversation. The kit is easy-to-use and transferrable so it can be naturally incorporated into daily routines. The Growing Kit was launched onto the market in September of 2020 when children were heading back to school for the first time since the pandemic closed school doors in March. While many parents have struggled to navi-

gate through the COVID-19 pandemic, children have also struggled emotionally and mentally with the global and regional changes brought on by the pandemic. The Growing Kit is a useful tool that is designed to help families start conversations with their children about their feelings during these trying times. The Growing Kit is not only an excellent tool to help parents talk to their children about the COVID-19 pandemic, it can be used anytime to encourage conversation about other issues or events affecting their child as well. Whether the child is having a bad day at school, is trying to adjust to their parent’s separation or divorce, dealing with move or change of school or new daycare, or just as a way to start conversation, the Growing Kit can help children express their emotions to their parents in a positive way. Bud Sprout Bloom founder Elisa Colella first came up with the idea two years ago. A Holistic Nutritionist, Elisa is also a mother to two young daughters. She started using daily affirmations in her own life ten years ago and knows how invaluable they are in increasing feelings of self-worth and self-love. After her first daughter was born, Elisa, wanted to design an interactive, not computer-based product that she and other parents could use to start conversations with their children. The sensory cards are made of durable, wipeable materials with bright, gender neutral colours, and eye catching pictures. Instructions on how to use the cards are included with the kit so parents can naturally incorporate them into their daily routine. The Growing Kit can be bought on the Bud Sprout Bloom website at https://budsproutbloom.com/.

The truth behind
what your daughter sees on social media BY MElOdY lAu FrOM APrIcOTTON
When you’re scrolling through social media platforms, do you ever catch yourself feeling jealous from your friend’s vacation photos or wishing you looked more like your favourite celebrity? Take a second to think about how your daughter must feel, with most tweens and teens spending up to nine hours a day on social media. Though you may not know what she’s reading, it’s clear many unrealistic images in the media surround her. She may be subconsciously comparing herself to others without realizing what she sees on social media beyond reality, whether it’s a selfie of her friend or a celebrity. It’s hard to think that even celebrities and influencers would edit their photos, but you can easily find lists of common photoshop mistakes online. If you ever catch other Photoshop mistakes from celebrities you or your daughter like, please show her. Not only will you both laugh together, but you can also teach her how the media she consumes are complex constructions. A celebrity may have taken the photo over 500 times with 50 different angles and a professional makeup artist at their disposal. Social media influencers and celebrities work to sell a perfect life, but your daughter needs to understand how it doesn’t exist. Some days may be great, but other days may be a struggle to get through for everyone. A personal example to leave you with is if you’ve ever experienced taking a family photo where everyone was bickering a few seconds before. Still, you all put on a smile for 28 EDUCATION GUIDE 2021
the camera and then went back to a straight face or frown right after. Moving aside from celebrities and influencers, I used to possess more negative thoughts and compare myself to my friends’ Instagram posts. I used to continually check and compare our engagement rates from the number of likes to the number of comments they received. Even if it were a close friend, I would wonder why our mutual friend had commented on her post and not mine. Over time, I realized I wasn’t even enjoying using social media anymore since the platforms were becoming unhealthy to my well-being and a waste of time to worry about something that was simply a product of social construction. Your daughter can hopefully see beyond the constructed images and move away from crafting an idealized version of themselves with your guid-
ance. For tweens, teens and adults, social media is a great tool to keep in touch with family and friends while acting as a platform to showcase who you are. However, it’s important to remind your daughter that she sees the highlight reel of people’s lives. Social media may not be real, but we are. This blog was co-written by Apricotton, an online tween and teen bra brand that designs bras with features specifically for growing girls. They’ve started a movement to guide girls and improve their confidence during puberty by offering older sister advice that empowers girls to achieve and feel their best during this sensitive life stage. If you have any comments or questions or want to learn more about Apricotton, contact them through their website’s contact form or Instagram!
