EDITORS NOTE

up front

APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS Now that spring is in full swing and we leave the nasty cold weather behind, nothing beats the great outdoors. With warmer weather, we look forward to outdoor patios, busy sidewalks and lighting up the BBQ. I’ve compiled some ideas of places to visit locally or if you like a little road trip. Centre Island/High Park Take the ferry and your bikes to the Toronto Island. Find the closest lake and get your canoe or kayak out. Walk through High Park and take in the beauty of Toronto’s Sakura, known as the cherry blossom festival which bloom in late April to early May. 1000 Islands From Gananoque, halfway between Toronto and Ottawa, more than 1,800 islands dot the St. Lawrence River. There is no better way to see all the secluded beaches, picturesque cottages, and lavish homes than by taking a cruise along Millionaires’ Row. View the beautiful Boldt Castle and learn the tragic story of how George Boldt built it for his wife, who died before it was completed in 1904. Boldt’s dream has now been achieved because of the Thousand #öܯâ¿ö óпÍà ýûÏæóÐûĒɚö ÃÌÌæóûö ¯â¿ ûÏà á¯ÍâÐĶ »Ãâû grounds are now open to visitors.

Bruce Peninsula Get a head start on the summer rush of tourists by exploring Bruce Peninsula’s amazing rock formations and lush nature trails. Located on the Georgian Trail, the grotto features an eerie blue-water pool, which combines the crystal waters of Lake Huron and the waters of Georgian Bay. Hamilton Known as the city of the waterfalls, Hamilton has the largest botanical garden in Canada, an attraction worth visiting during spring when thousands of ķ æĐÃóö ¯óà Ðâ ºÜææáȨ Niagara-on-the-Lake A World Heritage Site in southwestern Ontario, Niagara-on-the-Lake is a stunning little town made up of 19th century buildings, with boutiques and unique antique shops. Only 30 minutes from Niagara Falls, it is also known as Canada’s wine region, with several wineries to visit. Embrace spring and the great outdoors and never miss an opportunity to visit the spectacular places to see in Ontario! And remember Que Sera, Sera, whatever will be, will be.

Ingredients:

Directions:

Cruller: ½ cup (125 mL) milk ½ cup (125 mL) water ½ cup (125 mL) unsalted butter 1 tbsp (15 mL) granulated sugar 1 tsp (5 mL) salt 1¼ cup (310 mL) all-purpose flour, sifted 3 eggs vegetable oil for frying

Crullers: In a medium saucepan, over high heat bring milk, water, butter, sugar and salt to a boil. Using a wooden spoon, stir in flour all at once. Cook, stirring vigorously, until mixture forms on bottom of pan, about 1 minute. Reduce heat to low and cook stirring 2 minutes. Let cool 5 minutes.

Raspberry or Blackberry Glaze: ѿ cup (75 mL) raspberries or blackberries, crushed 1 cup (250 mL) icing sugar Lemon Glaze: 1 cup (250 mL) icing sugar 2 tsp (10 mL) grated lemon zest 2 tbsp (30 mL) lemon juice

Transfer cooled dough into a stand mixer, fitted with the paddle attachment. On medium speed, add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, making sure to incorporate each egg until smooth and shiny. Scrape mixture into a large piping bag fitted with a large star tip. Heat oil in a deep fryer to 375°F (190°C) or alternatively use a large pot filled with 3 inches (8 cm) of oil and a deep-fry thermometer. Pipe 3-inch (8 cm) round circles onto 4-inch (10 cm) squared pieces of parchment paper. Using a slotted spoon, gently immerse crullers into deep fryer, along with parchment paper. With tongs, remove papers once they have loosened from the crullers in the oil. Fry crullers in batches of 2 for about 2 to 3 minutes per side, until golden brown. Let drain on a cooling rack set over a baking sheet. Raspberry or Blackberry Glaze: In a medium bowl, stir together crushed berries and icing sugar in a bowl until smooth. Lemon Glaze: In a medium bowl, stir together icing sugar, lemon and juice until smooth. Dip cooled crullers halfway into glaze and let set on a cooling rack.

HOW TO EASE YOUR DAUGHTER THROUGH THE DIFFICULTIES OF PUBERTY WORDS BY KATE MCCALLUM It goes without saying that puberty is the most testing time for a child’s self-esteem. As a parent, it can be punishing to watch your daughter falter Ðâ »æâĶ ¿Ãâ»Ãȣ ¯â¿ ºÃ»æáà uncomfortable in her growing body. However, this feeling of helplessness can be lessened 20 CITY PARENT | April 2022

by practicing effective parenting strategies to ease your daughter through these trying times. The following techniques can reduce the awkwardness surrounding puberty conversations, and provide more available outlets for your daughter’s sensitive questions and worries.

Destigmatize puberty terminology As a concerned parent, it is important to you that your daughter feels comfortable and open when speaking about her physical changes throughout puberty. A key method to alleviating much of

the embarrassment that comes along with puberty is to erase the stigma surrounding the associated terminology. As your daughter matures, I suggest that you use the anatomical names for reproductive organs (ex: breasts, vagina, vulva etc.), rather than her previously cityparent.com

learned nicknames for these body parts. By avoiding the ö»ÐÃâûÐĶ »¯ÜÜĒ ¿ÃóÐďÿ ûÃóáö for these organs and features, you are reinforcing the notion that these conversation topics are taboo, which furthers the societal connotation of shame with female sex organs. It is this stigma which makes your daughter more likely to avoid disclosing severe period cramps or unusual vaginal discharge. By using the correct terminology, you and your daughter can discuss female reproductive organs as casually as you discuss the health of your other body parts. This way, your daughter will be more likely to share potential aches or pains she experiences on her physical journey through puberty, and will push her towards having more open and empowering conversations with her peers. Give advice through a modern lens Although anecdotes about your own experiences through puberty can provide valuable insight for your curious daughter, it is certain that your puberty ÃđðÃóÐÃâ»Ã ¿ÐÌÌÃóö öÐÍâÐĶ »¯âûÜĒ from the typical struggles of teen girls in 2022. Despite better access to puberty products and informative resources, girls face the added challenge of navigating puberty with social media and the ever-pursued ideal of the perfect woman. This introduces the threat of comparison that breeds insecurity in many teen girls. Considering this modern roadblock to a seamless transition to adulthood, it is imperative that you cater your advice towards the current

challenges of tweens. This may look like teaching her how to use social media in a healthy and empowering way. It should also involve reminding her that everyone develops at a unique pace, despite the narrative that the media and her peers are perpetuating. Moreover, you should be preaching body inclusivity, and celebrating her beautiful individuality. On the other hand, you can leverage modern technologies to provide helpful tools to ease her through puberty, such as using period tracking apps, following tween empowerment social media accounts, or listening to uplifting womens’ podcasts! Purchase from tween & teen – friendly brands 8âà æÌ ûÏà ºÃâÃĶ ûö æÌ ýâ¿ÃóÍæÐâÍ puberty in 2022 is the availability of tween friendly, female empowering brands. Historically, á¯âĒ »æáð¯âÐÃö ϯďà ðóæĶ ûÿ off of the insecurities of women and girls, perpetuating a value for short-lived trends, as well as imposing the pink tax on period products. However, there is another side of the fashion and wellness industry which operates with the health and happiness of young women at the forefront of their mission statement. At Apricotton, we have designed numerous styles of bras that are designed to grow as your daughter grows, while eliminating the discomfort and insecurity often associated with bra shopping. Apricotton bras are catered to the unique needs of tweens and teens, while we seek to uplift and educate young women during this vulnerable time.

ALTHOUGH ANECDOTES ABOUT YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES THROUGH PUBERTY CAN PROVIDE VALUABLE INSIGHT FOR YOUR CURIOUS DAUGHTER, IT IS CERTAIN THAT YOUR PUBERTY EXPERIENCE DIFFERS SIGNIFICANTLY FROM THE TYPICAL STRUGGLES OF TEEN GIRLS IN 2022. Encourage her to seek advice Ìóæá ɜæÜ¿Ãó öÐöûÃóɝ Ķ ÍýóÃö Despite your best efforts, there are simply some issues your daughter faces throughout her adolescence that she may feel more reassured about sharing with an older peer, rather than a parent. Accepting this reality, you should encourage your daughter to share the burden of her more intimate worries with another trusted person. As an older teenager or young adult, this person is able to provide more impartial and experiencebased advice, given their recent encounters with problems alike. This trusted person may be an older sister, older friend or

Üï¿ÃóöÏÐð Ķ Íýóà Ðâ ¯âæûÏÃó ¯óï of your daughter’s life (i.e a camp counselor, sports coach, guidance counselor etc.). This honest relationship will satisfy your daughter’s need for a helping hand ĐÏÃâ »æâÌóæâûÐâÍ ûÏà ¿ÐÌĶ »ýÜûÐÃö of being a teen, without requiring you to overbear her private life. This strategy will delegate puberty advice to a better-informed person, while preserving your parent-daughter relationship. Be sure that all conversations are inclusive It is vitally important that lessons with your child about puberty and reproductive health include the experiences of people of all sexualities and gender expressions. For tweens and teens who are unsure of their sexual and gender identities, the trials of puberty can exacerbate feelings of gender dysphoria and uncertainties in their sexual orientation. This stems largely from media and traditional parenting lessons that impose a cis-heteronormative idea of how a woman should look, feel and express herself. To combat this, you may consider explaining how a person’s hormones change during puberty, and how transgender people may choose to inhibit or increase these hormones when transitioning. Moreso, it may involve you rewriting the typical lessons around heterosexual reproductive health, including the possibility of other LGBT+ inclusive relationships. Overall, ensure that puberty conversations pertain to all people, which will encourage your child to mature into a more open-minded adult and feel accepted, not restricted, by their most authentic self.

This blog was co-written by Apricotton, an online tween and teen bra brand that designs bras with features specifically for growing girls. They’ve started a movement to guide girls and improve their confidence during puberty by offering older sister advice that empowers girls to achieve and feel their best during this sensitive life stage. If you have any comments or questions or want to learn more about Apricotton, contact them through their website’s contact form or Instagram! cityparent.com
