Spring cleaning checklist

for a healthy home

Welcome the season with this handy checklist for making sure your home is in top shape.

ventilate your home

Take advantage of warmer temperatures to make sure you have enough fresh air coming in. Open your windows when using products that may release chemicals into the air, including cleaning products, paints or varnishes. Remember to follow the manufacturer’s directions for safe use. Reduce moisture, odours and pollutants by installing exhaust fans in bathrooms and above the stove. Remember to turn them on when showering and cooking.

use cleaning products safely

Remember that even the basic cleaning products you use around your home and garage can be dangerous if handled or disposed of incorrectly – in fact, household chemical

products are among the top products responsible for injuries and deaths in children under five. These products include cleaning liquids and powders, polishes, drain cleaners, paint thinner, and windshield washer fluids. Stay safe by using, storing and disposing of household chemicals carefully. Learn the meaning of the hazard symbols and follow all cautionary statements and directions on the label.

check for mould

Inspect your home for visible signs of mould or areas with too much moisture. Look for stains or discolouration on floors, walls, window panes and frames, fabrics and carpets. Notice if you smell a musty “earthy” odour. If you discover mould, and the contaminated surface

is small, clean the mould by following the tips on Canada.ca/health. You can prevent mould by fixing any moisture problems right away and controlling humidity levels in your home. Water collecting on window sills and in basements is evidence of a moisture problem. If you rent, speak to your landlord about any mould or moisture problems. Infor-

2021 trends people are talking about

E

very year new or improved ways of taking care of ourselves become popular. Chances are you may have heard of self-care or yoga, whether you’ve tried it or not. Here are few of the themes making a splash in health and wellness in 2021.

gym comes home

After years of enjoying the studio experience for activities like spin class, at-home gyms and workout routines are a top trend this year. Spending more time at home due to the pandemic is helping people get creative about getting active.

self-care as community care

Another lesson brought home by the pandemic was our need for com-

munity. There’s more understanding now that taking care of ourselves includes connecting with the people we care about. We can all lift each other’s spirits, even if that means meeting up online or connecting through a phone call.

cannabis moves into the mainstream

In 2021, you can expect more discussion of once-taboo topics such as recreational cannabis use, due to its legal status. Cannabis producers are now creating products that aim to focus on the users’ well-being, with a focus on CBD and strains to help tailor your experience. If you’re buying cannabis or cannabis products, remember that legal cannabis products are only sold

through retailers authorized by your provincial or territorial government. For products with THC, look for the excise stamp on the package. The stamp guarantees the product was produced by a federally authorized licensed producer, which ensures the highest health and safety standards, and that the product has accurate THC levels and is free from other harmful substances. Legal cannabis products will also include risk of use information. If a website claims they ship anywhere in Canada, it is an illegal vendor and your shipment could be seized. Find more information on how to identify legal cannabis products, including online retailers in your province or territory at Canada.ca/ cannabis. ■ —News Canada

create more closet space without major renovations

C

loset space is at a premium in many homes and apartments. Many older rentals were not built to accommodate large wardrobes; rental properties are often designed to maximize living space at the expense of storage. Closets vary depending on the size of the home, but many tend to be a minimum of 24 inches deep so they can store garments without the clothes brushing against the walls. Bedroom and hallway closets can be four feet in length or more. Walk-in closets are the largest options, but such spaces tend to only be available in modern homes or custom-built properties. It is not always practical or possible to undergo renovations to create more closet space. Apart from moving to a new residence, renters must evaluate the space they have and make some more efficient choices in how they utilize available areas.

clear out clutter

The first step to more closet space is to eliminate unused items. Clothing that no longer fits or items that can be stored elsewhere should be removed from the closet. Donate as much as possible. Some organizations will even pick up donations at your convenience.

upgrade hangers and rods

Replace existing hangers with slimmer, more uniform alternatives that more easily fit into your closet. In addition, remove empty hangers, which are likely just taking up space. Consider dual closet rods if space will allow them. Hang the second rod below an area reserved for shorter

4Rent.ca

March 27–April 10, 2021

clothing to achieve a two-tiered design. Grouping short items together also can free up valuable floor space.

stack taller

Many closets are as tall as the ceilings of the rooms where they’re located. However, the upper area may go unused because if it is not easy to reach. Install shelving above the closet rod with small swing-out style cabinet doors to offer access. In such areas, store seasonal items that you won’t need to reach for each day. Keep a step stool close by for easy accessibility. In small rooms, tenants may want to find another way to utilize vertical space. A loft bed, which raises the

bed up to a level where it might be on the top bunk of a bunk bed, will free up plenty of storage space beneath the bed. This can be turned into a floor closet.

create storage for small items

Bookends, bins, boxes and drawers can be used to contain items that don’t easily conform to closets. These may be purses, scarves, ties, and more. Don’t overlook the possibilities of hanging items on the wall inside the closet or on the back of closet doors. When finishing closet makeovers, be sure to install lighting inside the closet so items are more visible. ■ — Metro Creative

F

from around the world inger foods are universally loved by kids and adults alike for their nofuss, no-muss nature, but they could not exist without their trusty companion: the dip. Canadians may first think of ranch sauce or garlic aioli when asked about our favourite dips, but this staple can be as varied and creative as your imagination allows. Typically made using local ingredients, dips can contain just about anything including vegetables, grains, dairy, oils and spices, elevating the taste of the foods they’re combined with. Middle Eastern cuisine sees dips being made with eggplant, chickpeas, yogurt and so much more. Their Indian counterparts are often loaded with veggies and spices, while East Asian cuisine offers a wide array of dips accompanying everything from rolls to edamame to dumplings and everything in between. Get the full scoop on some of the world’s most delicious cuisines by exploring their local flavours through dips. Discover more dips and other recipes at tasteadventure.ca.■ — News Canada

avoid being penny wise and pound foolish when planning your move

T

BY CHUCK RESNICK MOVING EXPERT

here’s an old saying about being penny wise and pound foolish, which I see play out often in the moving industry. When anticipating moving your home or business, you have the option to hire a moving company or do it yourself. Although some assume DIY is an economical way to go, hiring a professional mover can, in fact, save you time, stress and even money. Think about it. By doing it yourself, you have to rent a truck, determine moving supplies and equipment as well as other incidentals. You need to transfer your possessions from Point A to B safely and efficiently, and find moving helpers.

DIY will likely cost you more time, money and aggravation. Few are qualified or willing to get behind the wheel of a moving truck, so you will likely end up with a cargo van, which requires several trips. You ask a few friends or family members, or both, to help. You promise to reward them with cold beverages and pizza but, at the last minute, some of them do not show up. Those who do are probably not trained in the art of moving, including how to lift boxes without hurting their backs. There is much more chance of injury when people move themselves. The most common reason why people opt for DIY is because they as-

sume long-time, recognized, national-brand movers are expensive. On the contrary. Relocation specialists offer skilled, trained, bonded, uniformed and experienced movers who have the same goal in mind as you do—to move your items as quickly and as safely as possible. Many movers, such as Two Men and a Truck – Canada, offer a free, no-obligation, in-home estimate so you know exactly where you stand should you choose to hire them. Many people don’t realize what it takes to move; you may be surprised at the cost and what it covers. By hiring professional movers and getting them to pack as well, their supplies ensure safe traveling for all categories of possessions—from heavy books to fragile lamps. Our boxes, for example, come in standard sizes so they can be stacked in the moving van to maximize space. We have dollies, stretch wrap, blankets and ties for securing items to the van walls. The goal is to get everything in the truck secured, so it does not shift during travel. Do-it-yourself-

ers likely lack the know-how to do this effectively. Even if you do decide to pack your own belongings, consider purchasing professional packing materials from a reputable mover. Whether you are moving your residence belongings or transferring office furniture, equipment and files, moving specialists know what to plan for and how to arrange the logistics. You may have a narrow window of opportunity, because of booking elevators in a condominium, for example. We make it our business to take on the headaches of the move for you. Moving is one of the most exciting—and stressful—life steps you can take. Enlisting a professional mover is a fabulous stress reducer. If you are planning a move, think through the steps needed and keep an open mind to your options. Sure, you can do it yourself, but do you really want to? DIY will likely cost you more time, money and aggravation. When you look at the bigger picture, hiring professional movers may be one of the best relocation decisions you could ever make! ■
