3 tips for hitting your savings goals

Saving looks different for everyone. Maybe it’s putting away every spare dime for a major purchase, or saving what you can, when you can into a rainy-day fund. No matter what your savings goals look like, focus on getting there a little faster with these three tips:

Like any habit, saving money takes time and discipline, and unrealistic expectations mean you may be disappointed when you don’t save as much as you were hoping to.

To achieve your goals, don’t make any decisions about how much you want to save until you’ve done a "triaged budget". That means ranking all regular, monthly expenses from the essential to the “nice-to-haves.” See how much is left over, and if that number feels too small, reassess some of the items that are lower on your budget. This will help you put your goal in context and better set you up for success.

Nothing kills your savings like impulse spending, which can also wear away at the good habits you’ve started to build. Seasoning the delectable fried haloumi cheese with zingy yet earthy za’atar is just what’s needed as winter comes to an end.

When layered on naturally fermented bread, the flavours of the middle eastern spice blend – comprised of oregano, thyme, sumac and sesame – truly come alive. Serve with kombucha to add more tangy flavour into the mix. ■

Middle Eastern recipe you can make for lunch

Za’atar Haloumi Sandwich

Prep time: 5-10 minutes Cook time: 10 min Serves: 6

Ingredients:

• 12 oz (340 g) Haloumi, sliced into 1/4” slices

• 2 tbsp (30 ml) extra virgin olive oil divided

• 1 lemon

• 2 tsp (10 ml) za’atar

• 3/4 cup (175 ml) hummus

Directions:

• 6 tbsp (90 ml) olive tapanade

• 3 Roma tomatoes, sliced

• 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced

• 3/4 (175 ml) cup microgreens

• 1 loaf (12 slices) Stonemill Bakehouse Chia and Supergrain bread

1. Heat a grill pan over medium heat with olive oil. Add the haloumi, cooking on each side until you have nice grill marks. Do this in batches if needed so as not to crowd the pan.

2. Add a pinch of salt, pepper, za’atar and lemon zest. Before removing from the pan, add a squirt of lemon juice. Set aside.

3. For each sandwich, add two tablespoons of hummus on one slice of bread.

4. Add a tablespoon of olive tapenade onto another slice of bread. Layer the tomatoes, haloumi, red onions, and microgreens.

avoid being penny wise and pound foolish when planning your move

There’s an old saying about being penny wise and pound foolish, which I see play out often in the moving industry.

When anticipating moving your home or business, you have the option to hire a moving company or do it yourself. Although some assume DIY is an economical way to go, hiring a professional mover can, in fact, save you time, stress and even money.

Think about it. By doing it yourself, you have to rent a truck, determine moving supplies and equipment as well as other incidentals. You need to transfer your possessions from Point A to B safely and efficiently, and find moving helpers.

DIY will likely cost you more time, money and aggravation.

Few are qualified or willing to get behind the wheel of a moving truck, so you will likely end up with a cargo van, which requires several trips. Was getting your personal finances organized one of your New Year’s resolutions? If so, here are four tips to help you hit your goal and stay on track.

create a budget

There’s a reason why every article you’ll ever read about better managing your personal finances says to create a budget: It’s the only way to accurately understand your financial situation. Simply put, a proper budget tallies all of your expenses and all of your income. You can make one yourself or use an online tool.

cut back on unnecessary expenses

Once you have a clearer picture of your reoccurring expenses, you’ll be able to see areas where you might be able to cut back. Do you still have a landline that only ever seems to receive telemarketing calls? It might be

time to cancel that. What about that list of streaming services and other subscriptions you aren’t really using? And while that other resolution is admirable – you know, the one where you make space for exercise in your regular routine – if you’re not actually going to the gym, you may want to look into other options to cut out that monthly fee, such as working out at home or going for daily walks.

plan for the unexpected

Sometimes spending money is a wise investment. Take insurance, for example. Vacationing is wonderful. But if you get sick or have an accident abroad and you don’t have travel coverage, you could face financial ruin. Similarly, health and life insurance are relatively small monthly investments that help protect your family in the event of illness, or worse.

revisit your insurance policies

Speaking of insurance, it’s a good idea to periodically review your various policies to make sure you’re properly covered. But also check to make sure you aren’t overpaying or paying for coverage you no longer need. If your job, for example, allows you to work mostly or entirely from home, you may be able to lower payments on your car insurance. Lower premiums may be available with some policies if you pay the full annual amount upfront, rather than making monthly payments.
