3 smart things to do with your

T

ax season is here, and many of us will be getting some money back. Perhaps one of the most important findings from new Financial Consumer Agency of Canada research is that by doing small things today, you can significantly improve your long-term financial situation, regardless of your income. Here are three small steps you can take with your refund in 2021.

Pay off your debt

Use your tax refund to help pay off your debts. There are different strategies for paying down debt. The most common is to pay off debts with high interest rates first, in order to pay less interest in the long run and become debt free sooner. But you could also choose to pay off your smallest debt

tax refund

first to achieve a “quick win” that motivates you to keep going.

Create or add to your emergency fund

An emergency fund can help you prepare for future situations that are out of your control, like an unexpected job loss, healthcare costs or repairs to your car or appliances. While reaching your emergency saving goals may seem overwhelming, start small. It’s a good idea to save gradually and supplement your emergency fund with extra money when you receive it. A tax refund is a great way to add to it.

Save for short-term or long-term goals

Whether you’re saving for a

down payment on a house, adding to your retirement savings or planning for a dream vacation after the pandemic, it’s important to develop a savings plan to reach your objectives. Identifying your goals and understanding how much money you need to achieve them can help you decide how to allocate extra money. Putting your tax refund towards them while continuing to make regular, smaller contributions, can help you reach your goals faster. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada provides unbiased and fact-based information you can count on. You can learn more about making a plan to be debt-free, creating an emergency fund or setting savings goals at canada.ca/money. ■ — News Canada

5 ideas INFO YOU CAN USE

for families to make the most of staying home this Spring Break

D

ue to current travel restrictions, families will be spending Spring Break at home. One way to keep your kids busy is by making personal finance a group activity. Research shows that young people who discuss money matters with their parents have higher financial knowledge and skills, which leads to stronger financial well-being in the future.

4Rent.ca

April 10–24, 2021

Here are five ideas for simple things you can do with your kids to help them develop good money habits early: 1. Involve your children in age-appropriate conversations about news related to economics or budgeting, and discuss how the family is responding to the unprecedented circumstances caused by the pandemic. 2. Use the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada’s online interac-

tive budget Planner to teach your children about the importance of a financial plan. Try making a budget for your next family vacation. 3. Encourage your child to set up a savings account. Forming good savings habits early can help kids learn how to be financially independent and avoid relying on credit cards and loans in the future. Help your child to make a plan to save for something they really want, like a new toy or video game.

21

4. Show your child how to set up an automatic payment for either a subscription or their cellphone. This is an opportunity teach them about the importance of never missing a payment, which could have a negative impact on their credit report in the future. 5. Review your child’s bank account agreement with them and make sure they understand their responsibilities, such as keeping their

PIN secret, even from their parents. Sharing their PIN means they may not be protected from a fraudulent transaction on their account. Understanding personal finances can have a big impact on the present and future well-being of young people. No matter what life stages your child is at, you can find unbiased and fact-based information from the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada at canada.ca/money. ■

trimming food waste in the kitchen

W

asting food isn’t just careless and uneconomical – it also adds carbon dioxide emissions to the environment. Over half of all food produced in Canada is lost or wasted, which adds up to over $1,700 per household according to Second Harvest. To help you cut back, save money and help the planet, check out these tips:

Shop smart

Look for recyclable or compostable products and packaging. “Consumers have a significant impact by choosing environmentally conscious products,” explains Dr. Calvin Lakhan, waste management expert. “For example, the 100% compostable coffee pods from Maxwell House have entirely sustainable components

4Rent.ca

April 10–24, 2021

– the pod and pod bag are both fully compostable and the outer carton is 100 per cent recyclable. It’s a simple one-step process that makes a big difference and provides an alternative to single-serve pods, leaving zero waste for the consumer.”

Preserve smart

With physical distancing guidelines in place for the last few months, most of us have been spending more time at home and picking up new hobbies. While gardening and sourdough baking were early hits, now is a good time to try your hand at a variety of preservation techniques including canning, pickling, drying and fermenting. Learning to safely preserve foods at home can help you take advantage of fresh, local produce when it’s

in season, try new recipes and flavours, and stock your pantry and freezer with ready-made meals for last-minute timesavers.

Store smart

One of the main ways we waste food is by having it expire before we get a chance to use it. To help avoid this, learn how to store different items – what goes in the fridge, what goes out, what goes in the pantry. For example, treat fresh herbs like flowers and set them upright in water to extend their shelf life. Items like dairy and fresh meat are best kept in the lower shelf of your fridge, not the door which varies in temperature and is often warmer. Check your local grocery stores for the 100 per cent compostable coffee pods. ■ — News Canada

how to tell between a real CRA call and a

scam M

any of us have heard of scammers pretending to be from the Canada Revenue Agency. You may have even received a call or email yourself. But how do you know what you can trust? Avoiding this common scam is easier when you know what the agency will and won’t do. The agency will never threaten you with immediate arrest or jail for a tax debt, and never uses text or instant messaging to communicate about taxes. It will never demand that you settle tax debt by buying gift cards or prepaid credit cards, or using cryptocurrency like Bitcoin, or offer to pay you a refund by e-transfer. Remain vigilant when you receive communication from someone claiming to be from the CRA, especially when asked for personal information such as a social insurance, credit card, bank account or passport number. If you are unsure that the person on the phone is a legitimate agency employee, ask for the agent’s phone number and badge number and call 1-800-959-8281 to validate the caller. If you receive a call demanding immediate payment, take time to

think it over. If you believe it was legitimate, you can check the status of your account online. If you use online or telephone services, you can further protect yourself by keeping your access codes, user ID, passwords and PINs secret, and changing them frequently. Enabling “email notifications” for online CRA accounts will notify you by email of

changes to them, warning you of potentially fraudulent activity. Finally, suspicious phone calls or messages can be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or by telephone. If you think you have fallen victim to a scam, contact your local police. Find more information at canada. ca/taxes. ■ — News Canada

avoid common

packing mistakes BY CHUCK RESNICK

M

ore than four million people moved residences in Canada last year, many of whom did the packing themselves. For some, it works out fine; others have problems resulting from a lack of foresight, poorly packed boxes and inexperience in loading moving trucks. Here are a few tips to help you avoid finding damaged items at your destination:

purchase boxes from your mover

The most common packing mistake we see are people getting free boxes at the grocery or liquor store and then putting too much weight in them. For example, using a large box to pack books and magazines may make it too heavy to lift, and the box might break during the move due to the weight. Use this rule of thumb: the heavier the item, the smaller the box. Be choosy about your boxes; free boxes from a grocery store that have been used to ship produce could contain insect larvae that may transfer to your belongings.

be realistic about how many boxes you need

Depending on how long you have lived in your current location, you

4Rent.ca

will most likely underestimate your boxes requirement. Often, we hear of renters who think 40 or 50 boxes will be enough, and then realize they need upwards of 80 boxes, two days before moving day.

moving day, we can’t create that box wall early on and, this decreases the capacity of the items that can be moved at one time. It also eats up precious time, and therefore, money.
