small steps toward a plant-based diet
One of the best ways to transition to a plantbased diet is to incorporate more mushrooms into your meals. These veggies are extremely healthy for you and they pack a flavourful punch.
Adding four to five medium-sized mushrooms to your diet provides important vitamins and minerals with only 14 calories, virtually no fat and one gram of fibre. Mushrooms contain B-complex vitamins such as niacin and riboflavin that help to breakdown nutrients for your body to use, as well as minerals such as selenium, copper and potassium.
These minerals are necessary for the proper function of the human body and play different roles, from making healthy red blood cells to
protecting body cells. Mushrooms are also the only vegetable in the produce section with natural vitamin D, which plays an important role in bone health.
Mixing mushrooms into your favourite meals is an easy way to start eating healthier. Even if you or someone in your family is a selfproclaimed picky eater, mushrooms can easily be added to almost any dish for a boost of nutrients and flavour. Their high water content allows them to take on flavours, making them easy to blend into any recipe. In addition, they are high in umami, a “meaty” flavour that adds a depth and richness to recipes.
Some easy ways to add more mushrooms and nutrients into your diet:
• Mix one cup finely diced mushrooms (white mushrooms, portabella, crimini or button for a mild flavour) into any meal where you are using ground meat. Think meatloaf, tacos, pasta sauce, burgers, etc. Benefit: Reduced calories per serving.
• Include sliced mushrooms in your soups, stir-fries, casseroles, etc. They will take on the flavour of the dish and add a richness. Think crimini mushrooms for chicken noodle or beef barley soup, enoki or shiitake mushrooms for Asian soups or stir-fries. Benefit: three extra grams of fibre.
• Include sliced crimini or shiitake mushrooms into risotto or other rice dishes. Benefit: one additional serving of vegetables. ■ — News Canada
how to support mood and
mental
wellness with food and nutrition
According to Statistics
Canada, 46 per cent of Canadians say their perceived stress level is somewhat or much worse than before the pandemic.
Food and nutrition can impact multiple processes that influence our mood and behaviour. These also affect our brain processes, including higher-level cognition, such as social decision-making. This means that you may be able to support better mood and mental wellness by being selective with what you choose to eat. Below are four things you can do to help reduce anxiety and better manage your mood.
It’s important to note that unchecked anxiety can seriously affect your day-to-day life. Be sure to take the care and time to give yourself what you need to feel more balanced, and seek professional help if you need to.
balance mood and anxiety with help from magnesium
The mineral magnesium is responsible for over 300 biochemical functions in the body. Most notably, it plays a role in helping us calm the nervous system and find a night of better sleep. It’s also involved in the production of melatonin, a hormone that helps control sleep and wake cycles.
help from healthy fats
Getting enough healthy fats does so many wonders for the body and mind. Foods like avocados, walnuts, ground flax, organic eggs and wild fish are thought to support mood regulation, blood sugar regulation, sleep and energy levels. These foods may help keep our cognitive and emotional health in check since they can affect our hormonal system.
find calm with help from adaptogenic herbs
Ashwagandha is an exciting adaptogenic herb that is well studied and proven to be beneficial for stress and anxiety and overall enhancement of well-being. It can be used for acute stress, which is great for someone experiencing anxiety, or long-term use for someone experiencing chronic stress.
get enough zinc
The hippocampus, an area of the brain, controls learning and mood and contains some of the highest zinc concentrations in the body.
One study on 100 female high school students found that zinc deficiency may negatively affect mood. The best food sources of zinc include oysters, red meat and poultry. Pumpkin seeds, legumes and other plant-based foods also offer high amounts of zinc.
When shopping for natural medicines and supplements, consider places that specialize in this area, so you can seek expert advice and tips.

do this and you’re going to get evicted
Have you ever seen your neighbour do something so ridiculous you wondered, “Is he trying to get evicted?” We’ve all had a lack of judgment at one point or another, but there are some actions that could seriously jeopardize your current lease.
If you are actually doing this in an attempt to get out of your rental agreement, note that you do not want an eviction notice on your record. Instead, talk with your landlord to try and break your lease or look for someone to sublet your apartment. If you actually love where you live and you want to stay (I hope you do), don’t say I didn’t warn you. If you’re doing any of these things, you’re asking to get evicted.
cash flow…
slow, slow, slow
Non-payment of rent is the most obvious reason for an eviction, but your landlord can also file to have you evicted for habitual late payments. Get your cash flow situation in check, stop buying shoes and pay your landlord on time.
rule breaker
Hiding that stray cat in your room when you were nine didn’t work, so don’t think you can get away with having an English Bulldog in your non-pet-friendly apartment. It may seem like you’re only breaking a small regulation, but if it’s listed in your lease agreement and you’re breaking it, it could be enough to have you evicted in some provinces. Letting it jump all over neighbours, not picking up after it and letting it cause property damage will definitely get you evicted in all provinces.
are you alone in there?
Your friend was only supposed to crash at your place for a week, but next thing you know a week becomes a month and all of a sudden he’s living with you. It’s not a big deal until your landlord finds out. The name of everyone who is living in your rental should be listed on your lease agree-
ment. If not, your friend might not be the only one who’s looking for a place to crash.
damage control
Things break, I get it. I know that wine stain on the carpet was an accident and you didn’t mean to rip the shower curtains. What I really want to talk to you about is that hole in the wall, which is the size of my head! I don’t even want to know how it happened, just pay to get it fixed or it can get you evicted.
noise pollution
Break-ups are tough, but it’s been two months, Johnny! The neighbours can’t deal anymore with the outrageously loud crying session, followed by an hour of heavy metal music and your rendition of Shakespeare. There is never a good reason to disturb the other tenants in your building and it could be enough to have you kicked out. ■

tips moving estimate
For many renters, inaccurate moving-cost estimates can be one of the most frustrating things about hiring a mover.
Too often, a mover comes to your home and – after walking through the rooms and asking a few questions – will write out a moving estimate. A thousand bucks, the estimate may read. How does the mover know it will only be a thousand dollars? They claim they have done enough moves to just “know” this amount will cover the move.
Before long, problems arise because the job is larger than the mover originally anticipated, and they failed to schedule enough staff or trucks for the move. Sometimes, movers forget to note that some furniture needs to be taken to another location, which adds time and extra kilometres to the job. Suddenly, the cost of your move goes up – well past the original “thousand bucks.” Your anxiety and stress level also increase, and all you were seeking was a smooth relocation to a new home.
If you’re considering hiring movers for your big day, the Canadian Association of Movers (CAM) recommends you insist on being provided with an accurate estimate – one that is not just a best guess. They recommend that any estimates clearly show how the moving costs are calculated. Estimates should include the number of boxes to be moved, weight, distance as well as cost per hour. Other essential line items include how extra charges will be calculated if additional items are added at the time of the move, and the cost
of any additional stops that need to be made along the way.
With today’s technology, there is a better way to receive near accurate estimates for the cost of your move and for movers to schedule the right number of people and trucks needed for your move.
Ask your mover if they use today’s convenient cloud-based, tablet technology. Touch-screen, Internetenabled laptops and tablets can help your mover create an accurate estimate for the cost of the move. This takes the guesswork out of moving estimates and dramatically reduces the stress involved in moving to a new home.
Armed with modern technology, a mover can go through each room in your home and accurately check off all items that need to be moved –such as tables, chairs, dressers, beds and other furniture – and how many boxes they need to move. During this process, the system automatically calculates three crucial details – the weight and volume of the items, the
right number of trucks needed for the move, and the right number of movers to get the job done. This calculation reduces guesswork and nearly every potential cost is clearly outlined in your estimate.
We at Two Men and a Truck –Canada have long used cloud-based Internet technologies to take the guesswork out of moving estimates for our customers.
Our movers use Internet-ready Tablets and laptops to make accurate estimates for customers and print the estimate right at the customer’s home or business for easy review. Our system calculates how many movers are needed for the job, travel time, weight and volume in cubic feet, to secure the right number of trucks and have them ready on moving day. There are no unexpected surprises and the stress of a move is greatly reduced.
Moving is stressful enough. Why not use a mover who leverages today’s technology to melt some of your stress away? ■
habits that can promote personal growth
Making the most of opportunities for personal growth can help people enrich their lives and be happier. Embracing some habits and ditching others can contribute to personal growth and help people live full and fulfilling lives.
wake up early
Many people can think of various things they would like to do if they only had more time. Reading more books, exercising more often or learning to cook are just a handful of activities that can enrich peoples’ lives. By waking up earlier each day, people
can make better use of their mornings. Read a book while the morning coffee is brewing or run a little on the treadmill before the kids wake up. Waking up earlier also can give you a chance to get some chores done, opening up more time to pursue some new hobbies at night.
quit smoking
The ill effects of smoking are many. Smokers may not know just how quickly after quitting their bodies will begin to recover. The American Lung Association notes that smokers’ heart rates drop to a normal level 20 minutes after quitting. Twelve hours after
quitting, the carbon monoxide levels in smokers’ blood return to normal as well. Quitting also can provide people with more financial freedom. The resource Smokefree.org notes that, in early 2018, someone smoking a pack a day spent about $177 (approximately $240 CAD) per week on cigarettes. That amounts to roughly $9,200 ($12,516 CAD) per year. Financial freedom can make it easier to pursue passions that promote personal growth, such as traveling.
turn off your devices
Numerous studies have discovered that the brain cannot multitask.
Unfortunately, many people unknowingly try to force their brains to do just that by checking their devices. Avoiding devices during the workday can make you more productive and turning them off when you arrive home at night can foster stronger relationships with your loved ones.
volunteer
A study from researchers at the London School of Economics that was published in the journal Social Science and Medicine found that the more people volunteered, the happier they were. The researchers
compared people who never volunteered to people who did, finding that the odds of being “very happy” increased by 7 percent among people who volunteered monthly. Those odds increased by 12 percent among people who volunteered every two to four weeks. Volunteering also provides opportunities to meet new people, including those from different backgrounds than your own. Such interactions can help people develop more well-rounded worldviews.
The dawn of a new year is a great time to explore various ways to promote your personal growth. ■

minimal style with maximumcomfort
Minimalism is getting maximum attention these days, since this style of design no longer needs to have hard edges or be uncomfortable. The new approach celebrates nature and serenity without sacrificing warmth and comfort. Sharon Grech, Benjamin Moore colour marketing expert, shares her three tips on how to create a warm and inviting minimalist space in your home.
build on your base colours
Like all good design, minimalism starts with the basics. The first step to beautiful design is selecting
your colour palette of two to three colours that you will use throughout your space. Warm neutrals like creams, beiges and greys will help create a timeless and subtle starting point that lets your décor shine. “Neutral paint colours like Thunder AF-68, White Heron OC-57 and even a muted rosy hue like the Colour of the Year 2020 First Light 2102-70 are ideal choices for an inviting minimal space,” says Grech.
add natural textures
The key to an inviting design is thoughtfully adding texture and layers. Natural materials and textures have a calming effect and add softness to minimal spaces. Complement your neutral base colours with woven rugs, wooden chairs, rattan furniture and plants to add depth and visual interest and create an inviting and serene look. Group accessories in neutral shades together – think antique whites, sunbleached beiges and stormy greys to create a harmonious look that is easy on the eyes.
do it yourself
Consistency of colours, textures and tones are essential when creating a warm and inviting minimal space. One way to achieve a consis-
tent look is to paint wooden furniture and cabinets to create a unified and complementary set of tones throughout your home. “Painting wooden furniture and cabinets is an approachable do-it-yourself project. There are two key elements to properly painting furniture: first, smooth out any uneven textures using sandpaper. Second, make sure you use a high-quality paint designed to minimize brushstrokes, like Advance interior paint from Benjamin Moore.” ■
