how to avoid cold symptoms come summer
Warm weather is finally here and with limited sunny days to enjoy, catching a summer cold is the last thing you want to deal with.
Unfortunately, like winter colds, they can set us back and are a pain to deal with. At the end of the day, a preventative approach of minding your diet and lifestyle choices is the best way to make sure you don’t
miss out on any enjoyable summer weekends.
reduce stress
Unchecked stress can have a negative impact on our immune health,
making anyone more susceptible to catching a cold. Find time each day to bring balance back to your mind and body through activities that help calm the nervous system. For example, studies have shown that fresh air
and time in nature can do wonders for our health and can help to lower stress.
catch high-quality Zzzs
Lack of good sleep also predisposes our bodies to the common cold. Sleep plays an important role in maintaining a healthy immune system. Create a solid sleep routine and prioritize getting deep and restorative rest to keep your immune system balanced through the summer and all year-round.
include a variety of whole foods in your diet
Whole foods are those that have not been processed, refined or had extra ingredients added to them, and they help to keep us healthy. These foods include fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, meat, fish and eggs. There are so many delicious fruits and vegetables in season during the
summer, so be sure to take advantage of them and fill your daily diet with variety.
consider a supplement like zinc for immune health
This mighty trace mineral plays a crucial role in the body’s immune and detoxification processes. It is involved in more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body.
“Zinc is essential in the sense that your body doesn’t produce or store it, so daily zinc intake is important,” says Jenna Mangan, a certified nutritional practitioner with CanPrev. “Apart from its role in immune health, zinc also does a lot of big jobs for one unassuming mineral like helping maintain healthy blood sugar levels, keeping your thyroid functioning as it should, and supporting wound healing, growth, taste, and vision.”

how to support mood and mental wellness with food and nutrition
According to Statistics
Canada, 46 per cent of Canadians say their perceived stress level is somewhat or much worse than before the pandemic.
Food and nutrition can impact multiple processes that influence our mood and behaviour. These also affect our brain processes, including higher-level cognition, such as social decision-making. This means that you may be able to support better mood and mental wellness by being selective with what you choose to eat. Below are four things you can do to help reduce anxiety and better manage your mood.
It’s important to note that unchecked anxiety can seriously affect your day-to-day life. Be sure to take the care and time to give yourself what you need to feel more balanced, and seek professional help if you need to.
balance mood and anxiety with help from magnesium
The mineral magnesium is responsible for over 300 biochemical functions in the body. Most notably, it plays a role in helping us calm the nervous system and find a night of better sleep. It’s also involved in the production of melatonin, a hormone that helps control sleep and wake cycles.
help from healthy fats
Getting enough healthy fats does so many wonders for the body and mind. Foods like avocados, walnuts, ground flax, organic eggs and wild fish are thought to support mood regulation, blood sugar regulation, sleep and energy levels. These foods may help keep our cognitive and emotional health in check since they can affect our hormonal system.
find calm with help from adaptogenic herbs
Ashwagandha is an exciting adaptogenic herb that is well studied and proven to be beneficial for stress and anxiety and overall enhancement of well-being. It can be used for acute stress, which is great for someone experiencing anxiety, or long-term use for someone experiencing chronic stress.
get enough zinc
The hippocampus, an area of the brain, controls learning and mood and contains some of the highest
zinc concentrations in the body. One study on 100 female high school students found that zinc deficiency may negatively affect mood. The best food sources of zinc include oysters, red meat and poultry. Pumpkin seeds, legumes and other plant-based foods also offer high amounts of zinc.
When shopping for natural medicines and supplements, consider places that specialize in this area, so you can seek expert advice and tips.

Lendrum –
an affordable place to call home!
Looking to live in an established southwest Edmonton community that’s walking distance to a major light rail transit station, parks, schools and shopping?
Civida’s new Lendrum property is the home for you!
Nestled in a family-friendly community in southwest Edmonton, Civida’s Lendrum Redevelopment Project will be home to 120 families and individuals. Some of our suites will be move-in ready by August 2023.
Homes at Civida’s Lendrum property have beautiful, modern and durable finishings and come with amenities such as in-suite laundry, underground parking, bicycle storage, a multi-purpose room with a private patio and a public pedestrian access path to the LRT.
“We can’t wait to open our doors at our Lendrum property,” says Sta-
cey Houston, Director, Housing, Civida. “The community has been so welcoming and new tenants will really enjoy living in this beautiful neighbourhood.”
Lendrum is one of Civida’s innovative redevelopment projects. We took an old 48-unit complex, which had reached the end of its lifespan, and we are constructing a two-building, 120-unit complex. This redevelopment will be home to 2.5 times more people than the previous buildings.
The style of the complex is twostorey walkout townhomes with apartments above and will offer 25 one-bedroom units, 48 two-bedroom units, 31 three-bedroom units and 16 four-bedroom units. Ten per cent of the units will be barrier free.
“We also have leasing space for up to two businesses to be located on the main floor of one of the buildings,”
says Houston. ”We believe these businesses and the services they provide will add a lot of value to residents.”
The Lendrum community is excited to see this new affordable housing development and welcome new residents to their neighbourhood. Through open houses and public consultations, Civida worked with the Lendrum Community League and residents over two years to engage them in the design and be able to contribute to the project. Through these consultations, Civida shared information and provided residents with the opportunity to learn, ask questions, share thoughts, discuss ideas and review concepts.
We are pre-leasing suites now. To be added to our waitlist for mixed-income suites, please contact Civida at: rentals@civida.ca or call 780-702-4545. ■

pro tips to save on your monthly grocery bills
Inflation has got many of us feeling anxious about money recently. With the rise of the cost of living, especially in food products, we’re all looking for ways to save money and stretch our food budget. Registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator Julie Hutter has some advice for how to stay on budget and save on your next grocery bill.
Give these five tips a try:
make a shopping list and stick to it
Not having a shopping list can result in overspending on unnecessary items and overstocking your pantry with duplicates. So, before your next grocery trip, make it a priority to write down what you need and stick to the list when shopping.
shop the sale section and make use of coupons
Most grocery stores have a sale section with heavily discounted items that are usually approaching their expiration date. You can make use of these items by meal-batching and freezing them for future use. Just make sure you use them up or properly prepare them before their expiration date. For non-sale items, check out the store’s coupon flyer for extra savings.
switch to plant-based meals
It’s often much more cost- effective to cook plant-based meals rather than animal-based alternatives. Even if
you switch a couple of meals a week, only to plant-based you can notice a reduction in your overall monthly spendings. If you’re stuck on finding plant-based meal ideas, browse the many recipes available online at the Kidney Community Kitchen.
buy ingredients in bulk
You can save a lot of money buying ingredients in bulk such as pasta, rice and flour. Remember to store these ingredients properly and use them up before their expiration date.
choose larger meat pieces
Opting for bigger pieces and asking the butcher to cut it up for you if needed, will stretch your food dollar. Buying a whole chicken is much more cost-effective than buying legs or thighs only. Not only do you get more meat for your buck, but
expiration date.
you can also use the bones to make homemade stock
Although it might feel overwhelming at first, if putting in the work to you carefully plan your meals and grocery trips, you can easily definitely make a difference in your grocery bills. Keep the above tips in mind next time you go grocery shopping and see the difference in your monthly spending!
