here to stay. They’re a great way to help keep everyone safe while still addressing many of your healthcare needs.
To make sure you get the most out of your time with your doctor, follow these tips:
before your appointment
• Choose a private and quiet location with minimal background noise.
• If it’s a video appointment, make sure there is ample light so your
doctor can see you clearly. If you need to show them a part of your body, wear loose-fitting clothing.
• Have on hand any devices your doctor may have recommended, such as a thermometer, bathroom scale or blood pressure monitor.
• Gather any information you may need, including your current medication list and pharmacy name, location and phone number. Also take note of any healthcare data such as recent blood pressure readings or glucose levels.
• Write down a list of questions and concerns. Have a paper and pen to take notes.
during your appointment
• Keep in mind the call from your healthcare provider may come in as a blocked number.
• Give yourself extra time, as the call may come in a bit before or after your scheduled time.
• Let your doctor know if someone else is with you and introduce them.
• Keep an open mind. Although the appointment might feel different, try to treat it like a regular visit. Ask questions. Schedule follow up appointments if needed.
technology tips
• Choose whether you’ll use a smartphone, tablet or computer. Ensure that your device is
charged and that you have access to a reliable connection.
• Video calls work best with highspeed internet. If possible, consider using a wired connection.
• When booking or confirming your video appointment, ask which app or program your provider will use and download it before your session.

quick tips to cut back on kitchen waste
With prices going up, it’s extra important that we don’t waste food. Here are four ways you can cut back on waste in the kitchen.
schedule a regular pantry purge
No matter how big or small your kitchen is, you likely have a few dark corners of your pantry where items get pushed to the back and forgotten about. It’s a good idea to regularly sort through your cupboards to see what you have on hand.
When you do stock up on pantry staples, make sure you move anything you already have on the shelves to the front, so you use up those items first.
whip up a pot pourri meal
Not sure what to make for lunch or dinner? Before you head out to the store, take a look in the fridge to see what you already have. Maybe you can make a veggie stir fry with those loose carrots, celery stems and lonely
zucchini. Or chop up that leftover chicken breast into a chicken salad sandwich or use it as a topping for a pita pizza.
Looking for more ideas? There are websites and apps where you can enter the names of ingredients you already have and get recommendations for recipes to make.
pack or freeze leftovers
Making big batches of food is a great way to save money, particularly if you buy large-sized packages of food for bulk-rate savings. Eat up what you can over the next day or two for lunches or an easy, heat-andeat dinner. Whatever’s left after that, freeze in individual containers for a quick homemade meal instead of making something new.
understand food labels
Many people mistakenly believe that a best before date on a food package means that they should throw it out after that date has passed. Unlike an expiry date, which does mean you shouldn’t consume food after that day, best before dates refer to a product’s ideal freshness period. But, if stored properly, most food is perfectly edible beyond the best before date on the label.
In fact, you might be able get some deals at the store by buying products that are approaching their best before dates. There are also apps where retailers and restaurants sell off products that are about to hit their best before date for a steep discount. how to grow the perfect garden this spring
Few things say spring like a fresh garden. Getting your plot ready for the season can spark joy after months of the winter blues. Whether you grow your own fresh produce to use in the kitchen or just want bountiful blooms, here are four tips on how to grow the perfect garden this spring:
know what to grow
Your environment will determine the success of your plants, so it’s important that you consider things like temperature, rain patterns and the amount of sunlight in your outdoor space. Research if the environment will allow seeds to thrive or if your garden is better suited for young plants. It’s always best to grow native plants wherever possible to help nurture your natural environment.
pick your plot
Not everyone has room for an inground garden, so building a garden box may be the perfect choice. Any fearless DIYer can fashion themselves a garden box with easy-to-use hand tools such as the ones from Benchmark. You can find plenty of design plans online to get started, but the best part about building your own DIY garden box is that you can customize it to whatever size and aesthetic fits your space.
start simple
Consider how much time you can dedicate to your garden each week and don’t overplant. Perennial flowers and produce such as carrots and
cucumbers are a great place to start. You’ll learn the dos and don’ts of growing very quickly.
make sure you’re well equipped
Having the right tools and supplies for your garden goes a long way.
You’ll need items including a watering can, proper gloves, hand shovels and mulch – all of which you can get at stores like your local Home Hardware. Expert advice paired with quality equipment will put your green thumb to work. ■
— News Canadadesigning for wellness: personalize your space to prioritize your mind
Anew season brings new beginnings and positive transformations. Colour and design expert, Sharon Grech, shares three tips for using colour within your space to adjust the mood and prioritize your enjoyment in every space you create.
optimize the psychology of colour
We all know how important it is to make a good first impression, so why not extend this to the feel of your home? Ensure your guests are filled with a welcoming and comfortable energy the moment they walk in by applying colours that will boost the atmosphere of your com-
munal spaces. For your entry way, kitchen and dining room, Grech recommends uplifting yellows and understated, elegant browns such as Wenge AF-180.
“These colours not only provide a warm, balanced and inviting interior, but they can increase feelings of happiness and relaxation,” says Grech. For a durable, washable finish in kitchen and communal areas she suggests using Regal Select interior paint which includes stain-release technology.
paint for productivity
As many of us continue to work remotely, it makes sense to pay attention to how colour impacts our
productivity. “Incorporate colours that inspire, support focus and reduce stress in your workspace such as deep shades of blue like Old Navy 2063-10. Employ red hues in accents or accessories to stimulate creativity and boost energy in your space,” says Grech.
calm your mind before bed
While we often paint our bedrooms for an appealing appearance, it’s worth considering the impact colour can have on our mood and sleep. Ensure your bedroom is a comforting and
calming sanctuary by choosing hues of lilac and purple for mental calm. To be at the forefront of colour trends, try incorporating New Age 1444, a soft and ethereal light purple grounded by a drop of gray, or use warm shades of pink and brown for relaxation. ■

3 easy, eye-catching design updates maximum effect from minimal effort
Design projects don’t need to be intimidating. If you feel inspired to refresh your space but lack time for a full renovation, you can still create a bold and artsy statement in one weekend with paint and minimal effort. To help you achieve the latest look, Sharon Grech, Benjamin Moore colour and design expert, shares her top three tips for quick and easy design ideas to refresh your home.
highlight interesting elements
In just a couple of days you can create a wow-factor your guests won’t stop talking about – without breaking the bank. Grech recommends accentuating smaller features such as a doorframe, fireplace or bookshelf with a stand-out contrasting paint hue. “You can also ‘step-up’ your staircase with a confident, colourful paint on
the tread or riser to really make a statement.”
turn old into new
“Give a piece of furniture like a kitchen stool or bed frame a quick refresh and create a completely new focus and feel for your space in a few hours,” says Grech. “Adding a fresh coat of Advance interior paint to an old piece of furniture can brighten it up, give it a durable finish and breathe new life into a space.”
introduce an accent wall
Accent walls make a vibrant statement and are a simple way to give a room a fresh feel. “Be unique and achieve maximum impact by introducing a punchy colour to a neutral room,” Grech suggests. For a more subtle statement, she recommends playing with different shades of an existing room colour for your accent wall. ■

moving electronics
BY CHUCK RESNICKLet’s face it – your electronic devices make the world go round, and in the moving business, we realize how important those items are to families.
One of the most common things we’re asked is how to transport electronics safely, especially bigscreen TVs.
During a move, whether it’s across town or across Canada, it is important to give these items special treatment so they arrive in one piece and in good working order. The best advice we have for accomplishing this goal requires some forethought: to keep the original boxes and foam spacers the electronic items came in. That is truly the safest method for moving them.
Of course, people rarely keep these boxes, so at Two Men and a Truck Canada, we have specialty boxes and crates designed specifically to move big-screen TVs safely. People who do their own packing and moving should be aware of how easy it is to damage one of these units. Spending a few dollars extra to purchase or rent one of these special boxes can make all the difference. They can ac-
commodate any size TV, so there is a solution for every unit.
Another thing to remember is that most of these television sets are mounted on wall brackets –and moving companies are reluctant to disassemble the wall mounts or assemble them at the other end. Usually, if something is going to go wrong, that’s when it will happen – and again, people rarely keep the installation instructions for the brackets. It’s far too chaotic on moving day to be trying to find any instruction manuals. The best plan when preparing for your move is to take the TVs off the walls yourself ahead of time and have them ready to be packaged properly.
Here’s a tip for anyone disassembling electronics for a move. Get your digital or phone camera and take photos of the wiring connections on the backs of the TVs, cable boxes, DVD players and the like. When it comes time to reassemble them, it will be much easier to reference how they were set up originally, saving time, stress and frustration.
The same goes for stereos and gaming systems. Many teenagers leave their entire gaming systems hooked up until moving day. It’s up to them to disassemble their systems and hopefully place them into the packing they arrived in. If not, the best thing to do is wrap consoles in anti-static bubble wrap and place them into appropriately sized boxes so they won’t move around during the trip. In fact, this is the best way to treat most electronics items. That includes computers – especially desktop units. We have specialty boxes designed specifically for them that can be bought separately. If you choose not to go that route, then surround the unit with anti-static bubble wrap, and again, place it into an appropriate sized box.
And here’s a handy tip: pack the associated hardware with it. Place the mouse, keyboard, power cord, scanner, printer cables, etc. all into the same box. When these cartons arrive at your new digs, you’ll be very glad you did! ■
Chuck Resnick is vice-president, marketing and operations at Two Men and A Truck – Canada®. Chuck Resnickwhat’s the truth about best before dates?
We’ve all had that moment when you reach into the fridge for the container of yogurt, jar of pizza sauce or bottle of mustard and notice that the “best before” date on the package has passed. Does that mean you need to toss it in the garbage? No, not necessarily.
Best before dates appear on most food products that have a durable life of 90 days or less. There are some exceptions, including fruit and vegetables.
You should be aware that there is a key difference between a “best before” date and an “expiration date.”
Simply put, a best before date indicates the timeframe when a prod-
uct will be at its tastiest and freshest. After that date, the product may still be edible, but might not look or taste quite as good.
By contrast, an expiration date is the last day that something can safely be consumed. Expiration dates only appear on a small number of products, including infant formula and meal replacements.
It’s important to note that best before dates only apply to products that have been stored properly, such as refrigerating dairy products and avoiding extreme temperatures for pantry items.
Other products, such as canned goods or dried pasta, may also have best before dates, but those are not
actually required, and they’re usually a year or more out from the packaging date.
An unopened container of yogurt might be safe to eat days or even weeks after the best before date if it has been properly refrigerated. But a month or more after that date, maybe not.
When you do open the package, look for signs such as a funky smell or the presence of mould. By doing this instead of immediately tossing the product out, you can help reduce food waste.
