RED
revolution

“A great way to introduce more colour is to paint a door frame in an exuberant red for an extra decorative twist.” – Joa Studholme, colour curator for Farrow & Ball
The unexpected allure of the red theory in design
What comes to mind when you envision the colour red? Taylor Swift’s signature cherry red lipstick? Pushing the bright red stop button after a hard Peloton ride? Mark Rothko’s No.301 painting? Whatever red means to you, the bold hue is having a viral design moment. Enter the “unexpected red theory.” If you haven’t seen
this design theory swirling around social media or read about it in The New York Times, let me break it down. The trend was introduced earlier this year by Brooklyn-based designer Taylor Migliazzo Simon (with mega views on TikTok). She explained that if you add a hit of red to any space that doesn’t match, the room will automatically look better. Consider it the ultimate colour-clashing coolness (say that five times fast!).
So, what makes the red theory so compelling? For starters, it’s all about making a statement. “Red has a welcoming energy that injects some passion into any room – however little you use,” explains Joa Studholme, colour curator for Farrow & Ball. But the appeal of red goes beyond its visual impact. Studies have shown that exposure to the colour red can stimulate the senses and spark creativity. Could

this be the start of a red rebellion against the neutral palettes that have gripped the design world for years? I’m not saying to ghost your neutrals, but this design trend could signal that we crave a little more colour in our daily lives.
The versatility of red also allows it to transcend design styles and aesthetics. Red can be seamlessly integrated into any design scheme, from traditional to contemporary, minimalistic to eclectic. It adds warmth to industrial spaces, sophistication to modern interiors, and character to vintage-inspired decor.

much can overwhelm the senses and create a chaotic atmosphere. “The key is to balance out bright colours with more conventional tones,” says Studholme.
Don’t forget the age-old saying, ‘less is more.’ With bold colours such as red, a little goes a long way. That’s the brilliance of this concept – it adds a vibrant touch to your space, but it’s also noncommittal and budget-friendly.
However, it’s important to wield the power of red with care. Too
The unexpected red theory has taken the design world by storm, igniting creativity and sparking design conversations. Will you experiment with the theory in one of your rooms? You may be unexpectedly surprised.

STORAGE SOLUTIONS
JANE HERMAN
The key to transforming your home into a place that functions well, lies in adhering to a vision of what you want your space to be and changing your habits in order to fully realize that vision.
HOW TO GET STARTED
Set a reasonable goal, depending on the amount of time you’re committing to the task. Sort through mail, junk mail, newspapers and magazines every day. Establish a set of files to keep your life in order. Deal with your
bills. Take out your compost, garbage and recycling when you leave your apartment.
BEGIN, THE REST IS EASY
Don’t be deterred by the quantity of stuff you’ve accumulated. Make four piles: Things you need and use and want to keep; things you want to donate; things you want to throw away; and things you are holding onto for sentimental reasons. Learn to separate your emotional attachment to the objects you’re saving and you’ll be able to let go of things more easily.
MAXIMIZE YOUR CLOSET SPACE
Organizing your closets will give you some space to breathe, think and put yourself together each
day. Improve apartment closets with hanging canvas shoe and accessory bags for shirts, sweaters and other items.
Fashioning your space is a constant process that must be tackled and periodically re-tackled, closet by closet, drawer by drawer, room by room. But once you see the sense of tranquility and harmony that is achievable, you’ll never look back.

MOVING SALE TIPS
CHUCK RESNICK
When it comes to moving your household, sometimes you just can’t take it all. Before packing, take a look around. You can simplify your move by downsizing.
The best way to do this is by selling old or unused items at a garage sale. It will help you get organized before the big move, save you some money and also bring in some extra cash.
To pull off a successful garage sale follow these tips:
COLLECT
Gather as much of your old possessions as possible. Even things you dismiss as junk could be worth some money. Lawn mowers, baseball cards and salt and pepper shakers are some of the big garage sale sellers. But don’t try to sell potentially harmful products like old cleaning chemicals, or baby cribs or car seats that don’t meet new standards.
SPRUCE UP
Clean dirty items – you’ll be more likely to get your asking price. Polish old furniture or a splash of a new coat of paint.
COLLABORATE
Exercise your options and combine your sale with a neighbour. This will not only add to what you’re offering but also help get the word out to more people – not to mention help cover any ad costs. Check out local church groups or community associations – they may be hosting a collective sale you can join.
ADVERTIZE
Spread the word to make the most of your garage sale. Advertise in local newspapers and online, noting key items you have to sell. Post bold “Garage Sale” signs with your address on nearby street corners the night before your sale.
PRICE
Price your items at 50 to 75 per cent off the original price. Buyers are looking for bargains, so expect to give an extra 10 to 20 per cent off the price you tag. Decide
before if you will accept personal cheques. If not, post a sign saying so. Have coins in your cash box or money belt for change.
SELL
The fun part. Play music and place big furniture at the entranceway to usher in your buyers. Group items into specific categories – tools, toys, kitchen, etc. If possible, plug in any lamps or light fixtures. Make your sale wheelchair accessible and leave plenty of room for people to wander through. It also never hurts to have coffee or lemonade and muffins available for 50 cents at a side table.
Garage sales can be an organizer’s best friend. With less clutter, there’s less to worry about moving, making for a more laidback moving day.

ADVICE | MAKE YOUR MOVE 18 Renters Guide | June 14–28, 2024
TIDY UP!
How to keep the home tidy in just a few minutes a day. There are two tricks you can use to keep your home neat with little effort:
SCAN AND GRAB
Any time you leave one room, scan it quickly to see if there’s anything that belongs in the room that you are going to (or along the way). Keep a basket at the bottom of the stairs and any time you come across something that belongs on the second floor, toss it in. At the
end of the day, grab the basket on your way up. Deposit the items in the rooms where they belong right away (or first thing in the morning if you’re too tired). Be sure to take the basket back downstairs on your way down the next day. The key is to get into the habit of doing this daily so the basket doesn’t get too full, otherwise it becomes too time consuming to put everything away.
DO IT NOW AND SAVE TIME
Delaying tasks actually creates more work and wastes time. Fold or hang your clothes immediately after the dryer cycle is complete and you will spend less (or no) time ironing. Load the dishwasher
(or wash the dishes) as soon as you’re done eating and you’ll spend less time rinsing, scraping and scrubbing.
SMART STORAGE
You’ve probably heard the term ‘a place for everything and everything in its place’. This is so true, but it’s only part of the solution. The second half of this wisdom is to keep things in a logical position. Next time you are trying to find a home for something, instead of asking ‘where should I put it’, ask ‘where would I use it’.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A RENTAL
Whether it’s your first apartment or your 10th, you’re going to want to find the home that best suits your needs. While looking for a new apartment, use this handy checklist to make sure you’ve covered all your bases.
THE RENTAL UNIT
• Is there a storage place for extra belongings such as bikes, luggage, etc.? Who has access to this place?
• Where is the closest bus stop?
• Is the apartment near services that are used regularly? (groceries, bank, fitness)
• Is the rental unit clean? Who shovels the snow and cuts the grass? Who supplies the equipment (shovels, lawn mower)?
• Where can vehicles be parked? Is there good lighting outside and in the parking lot?
• How quiet or noisy is the rental unit during the evening for studying or sleeping?
• Are there laundry facilities? Is there a schedule for use? Is there a cost? Where is the closest laundromat?
• Does the building have Internet service, or can it be installed?
FINANCES
• How much is the rent?
• Is a security deposit required? What is the amount?
• Does the rent include utilities: Heat, water, electricity, cable or Internet?
• Will a utility hook-up charge be extra?
• Will parking cost extra? What is the amount?
• Who has to pay for repairs — big ones and small ones?
AVOID ROOMMATE MISUNDERSTANDINGS
• Who will sign the residential tenancy agreement (lease)? It’s best that all parties be named on it.
• What will happen if one person needs to move out before the end of the lease?
• How will costs be shared and bills paid?
• How will problems be resolved?
QUESTIONS AND CONSIDERATIONS
• Is the lease for a fixed amount of time or month-to-month?
• When and where will the rent be paid? What happens if it is late? Ask for receipts for any payments.
• Who do you contact if there is a problem?
• Have you arranged for tenants’ insurance?
• Are sublets okay? What about a roommate?
• Are pets allowed? Is a deposit required?
• Is smoking allowed?
• How long can guests stay?
• Are you able to decorate your unit? What is the policy about push pins and hammering nails in the walls?
• When and where are notices delivered when it’s time to move out?
• When will the inspection report be done.
It’s always a good idea to keep copies of documents related to your rental unit, including the tenancy agreement, inspection report and receipts. Asking the right questions and considering the answers before you sign on the dotted line will help you find a rental unit that best suits your needs and lifestyle.

SIX TIPS FOR RENTING WITH PETS
by MARLENE EISNER
1. Don’t wait until the last minute. Begin looking for a pet-friendly rental property at least six to eight weeks before you need to move.
2. Be flexible. Look at a lot of different locations/ neighbourhoods and property types (apartment blocks, condo units, homes). This will improve your chances of finding a suitable place for you and your pet.
3. Introduce your pet to your new landlord. Invite your new landlord to your current home to show the animal has caused no problems there or ask if you can bring your pet to the
landlord’s home. You want to show that your dog is calm and well-behaved.
4. Don’t sneak your pet in without permission. This will only lead to future problems and the landlord can give you notice to move out.
5. Get written permission from the landlord. Ask them to add a clause to your tenancy agreement that says your pet is allowed to live there and any conditions set by the landlord. As well, make sure that any “no pets” clauses are removed from the agreement. If you already have one pet and would like to get another, talk
to your landlord to make sure it’s okay.
6. Be prepared to pay a pet damage deposit. Your landlord can ask you to pay a pet damage deposit that can be up to one month’s rent. This is in addition to your security deposit and tenant services deposit (if applicable).

5 FUN SUMMER IDEAS FOR KIDS AND PARENTS
The warmer weather means it’s time for exploring and adventures, especially after spending so much time cooped up indoors. Here are a few creative ways to do family favourites this summer:
TAKE A NEIGHBOURHOOD TOUR
Try rediscovering an area in your city or town and experiencing it with new eyes. Look for self-
guided walking tours online where you can learn about its history and neat facts. Or make a scavenger hunt game out of it, getting everyone to try to be the first to spot some graffiti art, a purple car or a special landmark. Whoever wins can get an extra scoop of ice cream when you visit the local parlour at the end of the day.
CHECK OUT A DRIVEIN ATTRACTION
Who says drive-ins are old school? They’re making a comeback as a safer way to enjoy activities that typically involve crowds in closed spaces. Look for a theatre near you screening the latest Hollywood release or an old classic. Other drive-in options now available include comedy shows and

concerts. Pack some cozy blankets and your favourite snacks for a budget-friendly family evening.
CAMP UNDER THE STARS NEAR OR FAR
Camping is super popular this summer, but there should still be a few openings left at a national or provincial park that’s a bit further afield or less in demand. Or save yourself the trip and camp out in your own backyard — the kids will have just as much fun and it’ll be less work for parents. Plan fun activities, like camping charades, crafts with nature and glow-inthe-dark bowling.
ENJOY THE JOURNEY ON A ROAD TRIP
See new places in a safer way with an in-province day trip that’s all about the journey. Schedule stops at outdoor landmarks or attractions and plan to stop at fun local takeout spots that you pick together as a family. Save money
by getting more out of your gas with a high-efficiency fuel like Synergy Supreme. Available at Esso stations, the premium fuel helps keep your engine three times cleaner for more kilometres per tank compared to gasoline meeting minimum Canadian government standards in port-fuel injected engines. Actual benefits are based on continuous use and may vary depending on vehicle type, driving style and gasoline previously used.
VISIT A NEW COMMUNITY PARK
Spend an afternoon at a park you don’t normally go to, pointing out any new trees, plants and birds to your kids. You’ll be surprised how exciting a different playground or sport facility can feel. You can even bring activities for the kids and your laptop to get some work done on a weekday afternoon for a break in your usual routine.

DIPS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
Finger foods are universally loved by kids and adults alike for their no-fuss, no-muss nature, but they could not exist without their trusty companion: the dip. Canadians may first think of ranch sauce or garlic aioli when asked about our favourite dips, but this staple can be as varied and creative as your imagination allows.
Typically made using local ingredients, dips can contain just about anything including vegetables, grains, dairy, oils and spices, elevating the taste of the foods they’re combined with.
Middle Eastern cuisine sees dips being made with eggplant, chickpeas, yogurt and so much more. Their
Lime, Pickle and Yogurt Dip
Prep time: 5 minutes Serves: 2
Ingredients:
• 3 tbsp (45 mL) Patak’s Lime Pickle
Directions:
• 1/3 cup (100 g) yogurt
• 3 tbsp (45 mL) cream
1. Mix all ingredients in a bowl and blend to a smooth dip. Serve with naan bread.
Baked Camembert with Sweet Chilli
Prep time: 1 minutes Cook time: 20 min Serves: 4
Ingredients:
• 1 camembert wheel (packaged in a wooden box)
• 2 tbsp (30 mL) Blue Dragon Thai Sweet Chilli Sauce
Directions:
1. Remove camembert from box, remove and discard the waxed paper wrapping the cheese and replace the cheese in its box.
2. With a sharp knife, cut a neat circle into the centre of the cheese to create a well, reserving the rind/cheese that has been removed.
3. Fill hole with sauce, then top with reserved rind (you may need to trim the excess cheese from under the rind to make it fit).
4. Replace wooden lid, place on a baking sheet in a 400°F (200°C) pre-heated oven and cook for 20 minutes or until cheese has melted and sauce can be easily stirred into the molten camembert. Serve with veggie sticks.
Indian counterparts are often loaded with veggies and spices, while East Asian cuisine offers a wide array of dips accompanying everything from rolls to edamame to dumplings and everything in between.
