6 tips to improve your sleep

Sleep is more than just rest – it’s your body’s ultimate repair session, boosting immunity and revitalizing you from head to toe. And for people living with arthritis and chronic pain, there is a vicious cycle in which pain causes stress,

prevents good sleep and leads to more discomfort.

Fortunately, there are steps that you can take to reclaim peaceful nights and set yourself up for sleep success.

With age comes an increased sensitivity to noise, light and movements, causing disruptions in your sleep cycle. Invest in a supportive mattress and pillows, try ear plugs or eye masks, and avoid sleeping

And while alcohol is a depressant that technically relaxes you, consuming it will disrupt and reduce the quality of your sleep. If you’re thirsty towards bedtime, limit yourself to light sips of water to avoid multiple

visits to the washroom throughout the night.

Establishing a structured bedtime routine with a checklist of to-do’s can help you get into bed on time. However, if you end up going to bed late, try to wake up at the same time in the morning. It’s better to feel tired for one day than to alter your regular sleep schedule.

Some medications used to treat arthritis pain are stimulants, so it’s preferable to take them in the morning rather than before bed. Follow your pharmacist’s recommendations on when to take prescribed drugs for best results.

moving bulky items

When it comes to moving households, handling large, bulky items is a challenge, especially if you decide to do the moving yourself. Here are a few tips that can help.

Whether it is a pool table or piano, consider hiring a professional moving company to transport your large, bulky items. Ideally, neither you nor an inexperienced mover should be learning the process while handling your large, bulky possessions. This process is not without its risks, and here is how you can prepare:

pool table

A pool table must be disassembled before moving it. Depending on the age of the table, you may or may not have the original documentation on how it was put together and how to take it apart. Usually, the side rails and pockets come off, and the felt must be carefully removed.

Depending on the size of the table, it will be composed of up to three large, heavy pieces of slate that comprise the playing surface. These slate surface pieces are often held into place on the frame with screws covered with bees wax. You have to know to look for these; otherwise you can do damage. Each section of slate has to be wrapped in moving blankets. At Two Men and A Truck® – Canada, we also stretch wrap them so we can get a better grip. The slate pieces should not be laid flat in the truck, as being jostled during the trip will create stress points that could cause cracks. The slate pieces should be secured vertically

at the sides of the trick and should not come into contact with anything else during transport.

When it’s time to reassemble the table at the other end, it’s important to realize just how heavy it is and place the sections of it carefully, realizing that its weight can have an effect on floor-bearing capacity. Ideally, pool tables should go into a basement on a concrete floor.

It takes a minimum of three people to move a piano. The process begins with removing the pedal system, which must happen in a systematic way for the number of bolts that hold it onto the instrument. Pad wrap everything with moving blankets and stretch wrap each piece for added protection.

The process for dismantling the rest of the piano depends on the type. Usually, one leg has to be lifted and unbolted to come off. We leave the bolting system attached and pad wrap & stretch wrap each leg so nothing is lost. At this point, we

lower the piano gently on its side onto a special piano sled. Then, we remove the second leg while at least two people are supporting the piano. At this point, we shift the piano to the upright position at the edge of the sled, which has an indentation to accommodate the lid overlap so the piano does not touch the floor. It sits on a cushioned blanket and secured to the sled to prevent pressure points while being moved. Then it becomes easy to remove the final leg.

We pad wrap and stretch the piano body, then ease it onto a special dolly and wheel it out the door. The piano should remain on the dolly, which becomes part of it during transport. We strap it to the side wall of the truck, halfway between the two wheel bases, for the least amount of jostling. Once it is reassembled in the new home, it is critical that the owners have the instrument retuned, as there will be some unavoidable changes from the move.

Closet space is at a premium in many homes and apartments. Many older homes were not built to accommodate large wardrobes, while rental properties are often designed to maximize living space at the expense of storage.

Closets vary depending on the size of the home, but many tend to be a minimum of 24 inches deep so they can store garments without the clothes brushing against the walls.

Bedroom and hallway closets can be four feet in length or more. Walk-in closets are the largest options, but

such spaces tend to only be available in modern homes or custom-built properties.

It is not always practical or possible to undergo renovations to create more closet space. Apart from moving to a new residence, homeowners or renters must evaluate the space they have and make some more efficient choices in how they utilize available areas.

The first step to more closet space is to eliminate unused items. Cloth-

ing that no longer fits or items that can be stored elsewhere should be removed from the closet. Donate as much as possible. Some organizations will even pick up donations at your convenience.

upgrade hangers and rods

Replace existing hangers with slimmer, more uniform alternatives that more easily fit into your closet. In addition, remove empty hangers, which are likely just taking up space.

Consider dual closet rods if space will allow them. Hang the second rod below an area reserved for shorter clothing to achieve a two-tiered design. Grouping short items together also can free up valuable floor space.

Many closets are as tall as the ceilings of the rooms where they’re located. However, the upper area may go unused because if it is not easy to reach. Install shelving above the closet rod

with small swing-out style cabinet doors to offer access. In such areas, store seasonal items that you won’t need to reach for each day. Keep a step stool close by for easy accessibility.

In small rooms, homeowners may want to find another way to utilize vertical space. A loft bed, which raises the bed up to a level where it might be on the top bunk of a bunk bed, will free up plenty of storage space beneath the bed. This can be turned into a floor closet.

create storage for small items

Bookends, bins, boxes and drawers can be used to contain items that don’t easily conform to closets. These may be purses, scarves, ties, and more. Don’t overlook the possibilities of hanging items on the wall inside the closet or on the back of closet doors.
