EDITORS NOTE

up front

ALLERGY SAFETY Having an anaphylactic child means a severe allergic reaction can be life-threatening. A reaction can happen within seconds or minutes of exposure to something they’re allergic to, such as nuts or bees. This was the case for me when I gave my one-year-old a pinch of a peanut butter sandwich. A pinch, it was only a pinch. Within seconds his entire body flared up in welts. The moment I noticed, my brother-in-law, the firefighter, happened to walk into the kitchen. He immediately, without hesitation, grabbed him and me and rushed us to the hospital. Within seconds of arriving, the doctors and nurses had him in a room and gave him a shot of adrenaline and an oxygen mask. From a parent’s perspective, I lived with anxiety almost every day when he was a child. I kept a mental checklist while attending birthday parties, school, and even restaurants. Food allergies are the scariest for me. He’s now 27, and the fear is still there but not as intense. I still check that he’s wearing his medical alert and carrying his EpiPen. If you are a new mom and have recently learned your child has an allergy, here are the first two pointers to keep in mind to limit exposure. I’ve created a checklist to train yourself and your child. 1. The moment you learn your child has a food allergy, teach them always to ask what’s inside of what they are being offered. Practice this every time and even at restaurants.

2. Condition your child to say “No” if anyone offers them food. 3. Always keep Benadryl in the house. 4. Inform teachers, coaches, and other parents of the allergy. 5. Always have enough EpiPens to keep around. For me, it was in his backpack, school, kitchen and wherever he spent the most time. Never allow them to leave without their EpiPen. 6. Educate them that there is nothing wrong with them. It’s not a disease, and not to be afraid to ask for help. 7. Use expired EpiPens and oranges to practice and learn to inject themselves. 8. Read all labels for their ingredients. 9. Wash their hands often and keep their fingers out of their mouths. 10. Never use anyone else’s cutlery. 11. If your child shows any signs of a reaction, use the EpiPen immediately and call 911. 12. Make sure anyone and everyone they spend time with follow the exact protocol. There are two more things to watch out for if your child is allergic to nuts. 1. Soy protein and legume beans are known to be related to the nut family. 2. If a slight reaction occurs, any movement such as climbing stairs or exercise can accelerate the reaction from none to a threatening fullblown anaphylactic state. PRESQUI’ILE LIGHTHOUSE AND LIGHTHOUSE INTERPRETIVE CENTRE WORDS BY ANDREW HIND Presqu’ile Provincial Park is perhaps best known for summer days spent swimming and sunning on one of Lake Ontario’s longest beaches. But those in the know will tell you there’s much more to the park than just frolicking in the water. If asked, they would point you to historic Presqu’ile Lighthouse. “Presqu’ile Lighthouse is the second oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the north shore of Lake Ontario,” explains David Bree, Senior Discovery Leader at Ontario Parks. “It was built in 1840 as part of a chain of navigational aides around Prince Edward County, which was a notorious graveyard for shipping in the early 1800s.” In the tower’s shadow stands the Lighthouse Interpretive Centre, which incorporates the original lighthouse keeper’s cottage and tells the rich story of Presqu’ile in an entertaining and interactive fashion. “The Lighthouse Interpretive Centre is a celebration of the marine heritage of Lake Ontario and Presqu’ile’s part in it, including shipping, the War of 1812, and rumrunning,” says Bree. The history of the lighthouse naturally has a place of prominence within the centre. We learn, for example, that it originally had an eight-sided lantern house (cupola) atop the tower, and that the first lighthouse keeper, William Swetman Sr., served from opening of the light

in 1840 until his death in 1871, at the age of 86. Here we also relive the story of the tragic shipwreck of the schooner, Speedy, in a dramatic video re-creation. In 1800, Presqu’ile was designated as the site of ‘Newcastle,’ the planned capital of a district that would become the counties of Northumberland and Durham. In October 1804, the Speedy was transporting a prisoner, witnesses, judge, and lawyers to the newly built courthouse there when the vessel sank, resulting in the loss of all on board. After the disaster, the capital was moved to a new site at what would later become the town of Cobourg. And we learn about the epic achievement that was the construction of the 12km long Murray Canal, built

between 1882 and 1889 across the isthmus of the Presqu’ile Peninsula to provide a safer and shorter route for sailing vessels following the north coast of Lake Ontario.

Just as the 19th century lighthouse illuminates the darkness, the Presqu’ile Lighthouse Interpretive Centre casts light on the region’s maritime past

The Lighthouse Interpretive Centre is open 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day between Canada Day weekend and Labour Day weekend and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekends in spring and fall. For more information go to friendsofpresquile.on.ca/the-lighthouse-interpretive-centre.php 8

getting there

HAVE KIDS; WILL TRAVEL: MASTER VACATIONING WITH YOUNG CHILDREN Prior to having children, few adults would bat an eye at spontaneous weekend excursions or discounted red-eye travel deals that required little more than a hastily packed carry-on bag and passport in hand. Once adults make the decisions to expand their families, travelling even short distances often requires precise and detailed planning. Children add the element of surprise and the unexpected – not to mention extra gear – and parents must adapt accordingly when they travel with their little ones. These pointers can keep parents properly prepared.

CHILDREN ADD THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE AND THE UNEXPECTED – NOT TO MENTION EXTRA GEAR – AND PARENTS MUST ADAPT ACCORDINGLY Pack for the journey Anticipate what your child may need, but remember, unless you are travelling to a remote location, there’s a good chance you can buy many items at your destination. Direct much of your focus on packing items you’ll need for the journey, and less on what you’ll need once you arrive. Food and entertainment are two key components to keep in mind. 10 CITY PARENT | July 2022

Factor in “stretch your legs” opportunities Children have limited attention spans and abilities to stay put. According to Brain Balance, a program for improving concentration, children between the ages of two and six have attention spans from four to 18 minutes. Since kids may not be able to sit still the entire time, build breaks into trips so they can get up, run around, and expend some of their boundless energy.

when they’re likely to sleep can be advantageous.

Travel early morning or late at night Morning flights tend to be less crowded and are less likely to have takeoff delays that can push kids into meltdown mode. Kids are apt to be tired in the wee hours of the morning or later in the evening, so travelling, whether by road or sky,

Bring a light stroller and baby sling/carrier A full-sized stroller may be cumbersome, especially on sand or cobblestone. A sling or carrier enables you to navigate crowded places with ease. A lightweight, folding stroller can be used as a temporary bed for naps or when

Plan accommodations wisely Choose lodging that fits your needs. Some people prefer a rental home because it affords more space and the ability to save money by preparing some meals at “home.” However, certain hotels may have babysitting services or recreational activities for children, enabling Mom or Dad to have a little time off.

your toddler has tired out from walking. Know security rules Check with the airline for confirmation, but the TSA generally allows formula, breast milk, and juice in quantities greater than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters in carry-on baggage. It does not need to fit within a quart-sized bag. Remove these items from your carryon bag to be screened separately from the rest of your belongings. Explain the itinerary For young children who can understand, spell out what will be happening along the journey, so they know what to expect. This can help calm nerves and prevent tantrums. Travelling with young children requires a little extra planning and patience. – Metro Creative cityparent.com

LOVING YOURSELF WITHOUT LOSING YOUR COOL WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM Who is Shantelle Bisson? For one thing, she is an author who has just penned her third book, Loving Yourself Without Losing Your Cool. If you ask her, in this book, she is, “Me completely laid bare. Me as a human being, not Yannick’s wife, (her husband is Murdoch Mysteries’ Yannick Bisson), not the mother of my three daughters, not my mother’s daughter, not a friend, but just me.” The rawness and unplugged voice to her third book under her “Without Losing Your Cool” brand is a huge departure from her earlier books on parenting Raising Your Kids Without Losing Your Cool, followed by Parenting your Teen Without Losing Your Cool. Loving Yourself Without Losing Your Cool is a book women will be able to relate to as it aims to help them face the messiness of life and all the baggage that’s holding them back. Shantelle takes you on a personal journey to exorcise your demons. Through her experience, Shantelle helps you analyze the lessons learned in each phase of your life, going back to your past and addressing the things that made you who you are and facing the hard work of letting go of tough life experiences. On her website, Shantelle writes, “The only way I would get joy; health of body, and mind, was if I did the work to heal all the sexual abuse I endured. The only way I would live

cityparent.com

my one best life as the daughter of a neglectful, absentee alcoholic father was if I uncovered how to break the cycle of alcoholism that coursed through my veins. The only way I was going to figure out how to find validation for myself instead of

receiving it, and holding that which came from literally every single person I encountered outside of me as more important than how I saw myself, was to explore the why’s that triggered years of bulimia within me. I had no choice. I had to do the work. I had to grit my teeth and do the f**king work. So, I did.” For Shantelle, this book is therapy. “I wrote this book for myself because it constantly amazes me that as we move through life and, you know, I figure at 52 that so much of the healing would be done. But there’s always been this expectation in the back of my mind that at some

point I’m going to arrive. I’m going to arrive at contentment. I’m going arrive at confidence, at peace. Eventually, I’ll get to those places I’ve desired my whole life.” But the work had to be done. Facing her demons head-on, triggered by trauma and pain from her past, wasn’t easy as she wasn’t the only person in the story, and it was difficult to decide how much to reveal. “You only get one life. I’m the kind of person who will slide into my grave, worn out, exhausted and having lived wholly. I think a lot of people don’t. Many people live carefully, and they’re walking on eggshells. I think it’s a shame, so I hope what people will get from this book is to live out loud, live your truth. Live authentically because at the end of the day, you’re left only with you. Don’t rip yourself off by living half a life because you’re still harbouring what somebody said or told you what you were worth.” Loving Yourself Without Losing Your Cool is not just a book - but a journey you’ll take with Shantelle that will help you get through why you’re not living the life you’ve always dreamed of and how to make the shift to being brave. PIA BOUMAN SCHOOL FOR BALLET AND CREATIVE MOVEMENT The foundation of our all-inclusive philosophy lies in our Mandate which reads: Every child who has a wish to learn, perform, and create dance should be given the chance to do so. Pia Bouman School for Ballet and Creative Movement (PBS) was founded in 1979 and became a Charitable Organization in 1987. PBS is the only non-profit dance school in Toronto and has worked as a catalyst for city and community building in each of its locations: enlivening a church hall on Queen Street West, transforming an old factory at in Parkdale into a thriving artistic hub, and now revitalizing an industrial space in Toronto’s Junction triangle. Pia Bouman School offers programs for all ages and for all levels, from the very young to the pre-professional and mature student. Students can receive a complete education in Classical Ballet, enriched by Creative Movement, Contemporary Dance, and National Dance. piaboumanschool.org | info@piaboumanschool.org SAFARI NIAGARA Adventure awaits at Safari Niagara! FEATURED | CAMPS SCARBOROUGH BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION Register now for our 2022 Summer Camps! Formed in 1996 as a non-profit organization, the Scarborough Basketball Association has a simple game plan – to provide boys and girls in and around the Scarborough area with the opportunity to grow and enjoy life through the sport of basketball. For some of our youth, the SBA will be a launching pad for a successful basketball career in college or university. Some may even go on to become professional players, based on the fundamentals that we helped them develop. However, for most, the SBA and its basketball programs are simply a means of building character, developing friendships, and having a whole lot of fun. We offer a variety of programs for kids ages 5-19 from beginners to our Scarborough Prep programs for elite players. Registration is now open for our 2022 Summer Camps! info@sbablues.ca | sbabasketball.ca
