With remote work on the rise, it comes with unexpected challenges. Stop them from standing between you and your best work-self by following these simple tips:
Try to keep your work day routine to the schedule it’s used to — wake up at your regular time and keep to your morning rituals, starting work when you’d normally head out the door. But don’t forget to also give yourself breaks you’d give yourself at the office, when you’d take them. The less your body realizes you’re still home, the more comfortable and productive you’ll be.
Normally, you associate the clothes you wear at home with being at ease and relaxed. By fusing your work and leisure clothes, you’ll be robbing your work-self of productivity and
your home-self of relaxation. Don’t go all-out, but wear something you could get away with at the office. This will help you get down to work with a professional mindset and set yourself up for a successful day.
Working from home can be surprisingly strength-sapping. Make sure you get up and walk around — take the same effort to move around at least once an hour, which you should be doing at the office anyway. It’s also important to eat well. Your kitchen is right there, so use it. Make your lunch break an opportunity to stand up and try cooking something fast and fun before settling back down.
Even if you’re an introvert, going into the office provides some muchneeded social interaction. At home, you may be shielded from its dis-
tracting aspects, but you’re also cut off from that contact and support network. Make a point of having at least one phone call or Zoom meeting with a coworker every day. Avoid typed conversations, they offer less of a hard break from your work, and the two bleed together too easily.
At home, the silence can potentially be just as focus-breaking as a coworker wandering up to you to discuss the latest internet meme. Don’t let the quiet take over — just fire up SiriusXM. Unlike the radio, you won’t have to slog through ads. Just hit play on your computer or phone and let the productivity flow, or seamlessly transition to your smart speakers if you’re a more mobile worker. Coming back from a break and your favourite artist comes on? You can effortlessly create an ad-free Pandora station of just their music to keep the energy going as you jump back in. ■
— News CanadaThe connection between energy and eating is significant. A healthy diet and approach to eating can vastly improve energy levels, while a poorly planned diet that lacks nutrition can contribute to feelings of fatigue and increase a person’s risk for various ailments.
The Harvard Medical School notes that different kinds of foods are converted to energy at different rates. That’s why some foods, such as candy, provide quick boosts of energy while foods such as whole grains tend to supply the body with energy reserves that it can draw on throughout the day.
It’s not just what people eat but how they eat that can affect their energy levels. In addition to choosing the right foods, men and women can try the following strategies as they look to eat to boost their energy levels.
• Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Avoiding the traditional threemeals-per-day approach may help improve energy levels, especially for people who tend to eat sizable meals once, twice or even three times every day. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the metabolisms of people who do not eat regularly will slow down, as the body absorbs and stores more of the food it eats. Those stores include cholesterol and fat, which can be unhealthy and contribute to weight gain. However, by eating small meals more frequently, one’s metabolism speeds up and more calories are burned. The body recognizes more food is soon on the way and, as a result, it does not need to
store as much cholesterol and fat as it would if meals were eaten less frequently.
• Avoid a big lunch. The Harvard Medical School notes that, while the reasons are unclear, research has indicated that the circadian rhythms of people who eat big lunches indicate a more significant drop in afternoon energy levels than the rhythms of people who eat smaller midday meals. Men and women who eat big lunches and find their energy levels waning later in the workday can try to eat smaller midday meals to boost their energy.
• Be careful with caffeine. The foods people eat are not the only components of their diet that can affect their energy levels. Caffeinated beverages can provide a temporary boost of energy as well. However, men and women who drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages to boost their energy levels should avoid doing so in large amounts
after 2 p.m. That’s because caffeine can cause insomnia, and insufficient sleep can dramatically affect energy levels.
• Choose the right snacks. Eating smaller, more frequent meals may compel some people to snack. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics notes that snacks are important as long as they’re the right snacks. Avoid snacks that are just empty calories in favor of foods that contain protein and fiber-rich carbohydrates. Such snacks, which may include fruits such as apples and fresh berries or protein sources like nuts and Greek yogurt, can provide lasting energy. It’s also important that men and women not snack to fill themselves up, but rather to quell any hunger pangs and get an energy boost between meals.
The foods people eat and when they eat them can have a dramatic impact on their energy levels. ■

Thinking about a summer vacation but unsure where to start? This year, why not explore close to home and connect with nature. Here’s how to make the most of everything Canada has to offer with a more sustainable summer vacation.
For a truly refreshing and restorative staycation, disconnect for a few days without reaching for phones or laptops. Electronics can disrupt our circadian rhythm and natural sleep cycle. Consider morning salutations or meditation to connect with nature and set your intentions for the day.
There are 37 national parks and 10 national park reserves in Canada, plus
numerous provincial parks and local nature reserves to explore, meaning nature isn’t far from your doorstep.
Roughing it in the outdoors may not be ideal for everyone, but it’s easy to create a quality camping experience from home. Set up a tent in the backyard or a local campground, light some candles or a bonfire, and roast marshmallows and hot dogs using sticks fallen from nearby trees.
Try bringing food and snacks you already have in the fridge or pantry. If grocery shopping’s a must, consider carbon-neutral food options like Maple Leaf Natural Top Dogs. The Carbon Zero logo indicates a carbon neutral company to help you iden-
tify planet-friendly options for your cookout.
Looking for a new experience? Try visiting food festivals or fundraisers in your area. These provide the opportunity for you and your family to support the community while also cutting down on your carbon emissions since you won’t have to travel far.
If booking a hotel or rental property, ask your accommodation provider about their sustainability commitments to choose an option that aligns with sustainable tourism.
Make staycations the new vacations. The more we explore our neighbourhoods on foot, the smaller our carbon footprint. ■

Whether you bask in tropical days of a heat wave or dread hot temperatures each summer, you should know how to stay safe during extreme heat. Hot days are expected to become more frequent and intense
across Canada in the future. Here’s what you can do.
Tune in to local forecasts or sign up to receive heat alerts on your phone so you know when to expect the heat. If it’s available, check the Air Quality
Health Index in your area since air pollution is often worse on very hot days.
Feeling thirsty is not a good sign of how hydrated you are, especially in hot weather, so be sure to drink water before you feel thirsty. Try leaving a glass by the sink as a reminder, and up your fluid intake by eating fruits and vegetables with high water content like watermelon or grapes.
If you find yourself in an overheated home, activate the air conditioning if it’s available.
If you don’t have air conditioning, close your curtains or blinds during the day to block out heat from the sun, and avoid using your oven to cook. If it’s safe, open your windows at night to let in cooler air. If it gets too hot in your home, relocate to a
cooler area of the home like your basement or visit an air-conditioned space like a library or cooling centre.
Try to plan regular check-ins with family, friends and neighbours on hot days to help each other find relief. Head to an air-conditioned space such as a home, the local library or the movies.
Extreme heat poses health risks for everyone, especially for young children, older adults and those of us with breathing difficulties or other health conditions. It’s smart to stay connected to give and receive support.

If you don’t have air conditioning, close your curtains or blinds during the day to block out heat from the sun, and avoid using your oven to cook.
Take advantage of warmer temperatures to make sure you have enough fresh air coming in. Open your windows when using products that may release chemicals into the air, including cleaning products, paints or varnishes. Remember to follow the manufacturer’s directions for safe use. Reduce moisture, odours and pollutants by installing exhaust fans in bathrooms and above the stove. Remember to turn them on when showering and cooking.
Remember that even the basic cleaning products you use around your home and garage can be dangerous if handled or disposed of incorrectly – in fact, household chemical
products are among the top products responsible for injuries and deaths in children under five.
These products include cleaning liquids and powders, polishes, drain cleaners, paint thinner, and windshield washer fluids. Stay safe by using, storing and disposing of household chemicals carefully. Learn the meaning of the hazard symbols and follow all cautionary statements and directions on the label.
Inspect your home for visible signs of mould or areas with too much moisture. Look for stains or discolouration on floors, walls, window panes and frames, fabrics and carpets. Notice if you smell a musty “earthy” odour. If you discover mould, and the contaminated surface
is small, clean the mould by following the tips on Canada.ca/health. You can prevent mould by fixing any moisture problems right away and controlling humidity levels in your home. Water collecting on window sills and in basements is evidence of a moisture problem. If you rent, speak to your landlord about any mould or moisture problems. Infor-
mation on landlord and tenant issues as well as rights and responsibilities is available from your provincial or territorial government.
The soil outside your home can contain substances you don’t want inside, so keep harmful materials out by taking off your shoes at the
door. Vacuum up dust and dirt often to reduce your family’s exposure to health hazards like lead, mould and dust mites.
Avoid hazardous waste, whenever possible. Start by buying only the amount of chemicals you need for
the job. Check with your city or town for instructions on how to dispose of chemicals and other hazardous waste properly. Never burn household chemical containers, or pour the contents down the drain or toilet, or reuse empty containers for storing other materials. For information and tips, visit Canada.ca/health. ■

Camping is the unofficial Canadian summer pastime. Pitching tents, cooking meals and spending time with family and friends under the stars brings us closer to nature. But how do camping habits impact Earth? Here are some eco-conscious hacks that will preserve the fun – and the planet – during your next trip
Preparing camping gear is an important step in the planning process. This year, instead of spending money on new equipment, consider buying used or renting, borrowing or repairing what you already have. If you have friends who camp, there’s a high chance they have gear you can borrow – sharing is caring and ecofriendly.
The longer you keep a product, the less impact it will have on the environment. A little TLC spent on bringing new life to existing camping tools will help protect the planet for future generations.
Don’t grocery shop ahead of time; instead, consider buying fresh food at your destination. Purchasing fresh, locally grown produce from farmers and distributors near your destination supports the community, is better for the environment and is more likely to reduce food waste.
And don’t stop at produce - the best camping mornings start with bacon. To sizzle sustainably, look out for the Carbon Zero logo on foods
like Maple Leaf Original Natural Bacon packs.
Instead of buying plastic water bottles, bring reusable ones and fill them up at your campsite. Some sites have water refill stations, or you can filter and boil your own from nearby natural resources.
Limit single-use containers and bring reusable cloth trash bags with you to collect your waste. Recycling and composting where you can goes a long way towards preserving nature’s beauty.
Eco-conscious camping is all about reducing our environmental footprint. Have fun, take care of each other and respect Mother Nature. ■
Gas-powered items such as lawn mowers that are not emptied of fuel cannot be moved by your moving company. This is in accordance with Ontario’s Health and Safety Act and Hazard Materials Act. The law prohibits us from transporting these types of goods.
Many movers, including our company, have their own guidelines about this. Securing plants takes a level of special treatment that we are not prepared to offer. If customers need advice on how to move plants, we can help them find companies that are equipped to do so. In our experience, most
customers move plants themselves.
When we see items that are too big and bulky for us to handle, we will let you know. Upright pianos, for example, are incredibly heavy and usually require heavy-duty dollies and a truck with a lift gate. We can definitely help you with any size of piano. Massive wall units can also present challenges. We can help you find the right firm to move those specialty items, if required.

It makes sense that small valuables like jewelry, stocks, bonds and cash are items you should transport yourself.
Moving animals takes special care, and movers are not willing to take responsibility for pets during a move. You are best to arrange for them to be somewhere else on moving day, and then ease them into their new surroundings yourself.
When you hire a moving company, it is important to understand what services the firm can and cannot provide. At Two Men and a Truck – Canada, we pride ourselves on accommodating our clients in every possible way. But there are some requests that pose problems. There are 10 common issues that most movers won’t do, or are forbidden to do by law. 4
Ontario’s Conditions of Carriage requires movers to insure items at least 60 cents per pound. If our coverage does not include antiques or works of art, we can arrange it through our Insurer as long as these items are itemized upfront. Your homeowner insurance policy may also have a rider for goods in transit.
Sometimes people ask us to rearrange their furniture at their destination, which adds to the time estimated for your move. We are happy to provide you with this service.
unexpected happens on your end to cause a delay, the move continues on as planned but will likely extend longer than your estimate.
We are neither plumbers nor electricians. If you require installation of your major appliances, arrange to have those professionals help you during your moving week.
We get paid from the time we leave our facility until the time we return. If you change the parameters of your contract or something
We do not do “load only moves.” If someone else is driving the vehicle and the goods are not under our control, we can’t take responsibility for the condition of the goods at their final destination.
All of the above help ensure that your possessions arrive at the other end in one piece, with the safety of you, your family and the movers in mind. And, that’s our job!
