5 items that don’t belong in your recycling bin
Check out these items that don’t belong in the recycling bin and learn what you can do with them.
Did you know that if you place an item in your bin that can’t be recycled, it can cause significant problems in the recycling process. Throwing these things in
the garbage isn’t always a solution either.
To help you do your part for the environment, check out these items that don’t belong in the recycling bin and learn what you can do with them.
plastic furniture, storage bins and toys
Although they’re made of plastic, bulky items like tables, chairs and toys don’t belong in the recycling bin. Most communities have specialized depots that collect these items. If your community doesn’t offer this service and the item is in good condition, clean it thoroughly and donate it to a local not-for-profit or a friend.
batteries
Although batteries don’t belong in your municipal recycling bin, they can and should be recycled. Many batteries contain materials that can be harmful to the environment and wildlife if they end up in landfill, and the salvaged materials from old batteries can be used to manufacture new products like bikes, stainless steel water bottles and small appliances. To recycle your old batteries, Call2Recycle offers convenient battery drop-off locations across Canada.
paint cans
– and what to do with them
black plastic takeout containers
Optical sorting machines at recycling plants can’t detect black pigment, so they are unable to sort black
plastic items. That’s why it’s very important not to place your black plastic takeout containers in the recycling. Put these containers directly in your garbage.
Paint is considered a hazardous waste material in many provinces and should not be disposed of through the regular waste stream. But empty paint cans can be recycled in many communities. Check with your municipal recycling depot or local paint store for information on how to dispose of your old paint.
household items
Common household items like pots and pans, drinking glasses and metal and plastic coat hangers should not be placed in recycling bins. If you’re moving or doing a renovation and are getting rid of items in good condition, be sure to donate or sell them. Anything that’s broken or damaged should be put in the garbage.

moving contracts
Hiring professional movers can save you a lot of work and aggravation, especially when everyone understands what’s involved.
The best way to ensure that situation is for all parties to communicate effectively.
From the mover’s point-of-view, having a contract that is clear and agreed upon is the number-one way to achieve success.
In Ontario, service agreements with moving companies come under the umbrella of Consumer and Corporate Affairs. When we provide you with a written quote in person, by law, we cannot charge you greater than 10 per cent over the amount stipulated in the contract – unless you change the conditions of the move.
At Two Men and A Truck® – Canada, we price by the hour, whatever it takes. If you call and ask to have 100 boxes moved, and we show up to find 200, of course we have to charge more than what we agreed upon. That is considered a change to the conditions of the move.
Moving takes time, and there are many unexpected situations that
might cause a delay and make your price go up. For example, the person who moves out of your apartment building before you may be running late, and the elevator is tied up longer than you planned. For the mover, the meter is running the entire time.
Sometimes customers neglect to tell us that they are giving a large furniture item to a friend or relative and want us to drop it off on the way. This is a change to the conditions of the move and will cost more. The most common glitch is that the key to the new home isn’t available when it should be, and someone has to drive somewhere to get it. We bill from dock to dock, so anything that increases the time also ups the price. When one of these unexpected happenings occurs, the mover will pull out a form called “Revision to Estimate” to explain the change, and everyone signs it.
Occasionally, we get college or university students asking to quote on moving them from or to separate addresses. This is do-able, as long as they understand they pay for our
BY CHUCK RESNICKcrews’ time. It may well be more cost effective than hiring movers separately to have a number of students belongings all on the same truck.
We hire our own staff rather than casual or day labour. Our employees are trained professionals who are bonded and insured.
Make sure you hire a reputable mover whose crew members are covered by Workers’ Compensation and who has a bona fide phone number linked to their office to call if and when you need to especially on moving day. When all is said and done, customers should check with reliable sources to ensure they are hiring a bona fide professional firm.
At Two Men and A Truck® – Canada, we use the latest in technology when it comes to hardware and software to help us with estimating. A contract lets you and your mover know where you stand. Read it carefully and ask any questions you have. An informed consumer is always a happier one. Visit www.twomen.ca. ■

cottagecore style at home
Simplifying your life starts right at home with this year’s cottagecore design trend. If you’ve been feeling inspired to refresh your décor, consider this soothing style that evokes the tranquility of the countryside. To help you get the look, Sharon Grech,
4Rent.ca July 7–21, 2023
Benjamin Moore colour and design expert shares her top three tips.
celebrate crafts and comfort
Strongly influenced by nostalgia, cottagecore style is a celebration of crafts, vintage pieces, and a slower
pace of living. “Cottagecore spaces are defined by their connection to nature and nod to historical inspiration. You can bring this to life through colour, authentic heirloom furniture or even small decorative elements such as period dishware, vases and even plants and dried flowers,” says Grech.
create calming warmth
Key to the “calm and cozy” feeling that cottagecore evokes is creating a warm and inviting ambience. For a modern twist, envelop your space in all-over colour. Choose colours that feel timeless and minimalistic without feeling cold or bare such as warm hues like Sunlit Coral 2170-60, Fernwood Green 2145-40 or a neutral like Pashmina AF-100, in a premium paint such as Benjamin Moore Aura interior.
bring the outdoors in
Inspired by the traditional English countryside, simple living, and finding harmony with the natural world,
Cottagecore is known for bringing the outside in. Consider displaying fresh-cut flowers, hanging dried
flowers and even incorporating floral fabrics into your furniture to create a natural and organic feel. ■

stock up like the chefs
Summer marks celebration, surviving the cold, honouring ancestors and finally breaking bread. Whether it’s a cozy brunch at home, or perhaps a family game night, everyone celebrates with food in different ways.
Fortunately, festivities don’t need to go away because of COVID. Although it might look different, there
is still opportunity to celebrate a new year, a birth, or a unique cultural tradition.
Proper celebrations require restaurant-quality food, but any meal is only as good as the planning that leads up to it and the quality of ingredients used. Unfortunately, curating food for special events is trickier with COVID, and making multiple trips to the grocery store is discouraged.
“Shopping in bulk is a great way to safely cut down on trips outside the home while also receiving restaurant-quality foods to support whatever delicious feast you are preparing your family. I like a mix of seasonal favourites and also frozen classics to be ready for whatever my family throws at me,” says Sherri Vanderleeuw, director of Sysco@Home, the new home food delivery option from the long-time industry supplier for restaurants.
Shopping in bulk requires planning and consideration for an extended period when most of us are used to only shopping for one week in advance. Although ordering in bulk during months of celebrations requires careful planning, it can be beneficial for budget and time management.
Start with a quick inventory of the supplies, consider each special occasion and make the shopping list. Edit the shopping list accordingly and begin the shopping.
Choose wisely and consider necessary items as well as foods that are hits with the family. Steaks are great in summertime, but if most in the household are pescatarians, then perhaps salmon is a wiser decision. This versatile choice nicely complements a brunch or special dinner and can even used as a topper for an easy salad at lunchtime. ■
