4 ways to stay active and safe this summer
Regardless of your preference – be it soccer, pickleball, bootcamp class or tai-chi – outdoor activity is an important part of how many of us maintain a healthy mind and body. But being active outdoors during hot weather can have health risks.
Here are four tips to help you stay active and safe on hot days, and especially during a heat wave.
plan ahead
Follow forecasts and weather alerts so you know when heat is on its way. During a heat wave, try to schedule games and practices early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cool, or postpone until the heat wave passes. If you work out on a
team or with a trainer, make sure they have a plan to adjust the workouts during a heat wave.
be aware
Watch for symptoms of heat illness including dizziness, nausea, headache, rapid breathing or heartbeat. Move to a cool place and hydrate. Call 911 if you or those with you have a very high body temperature, confusion, loss of consciousness or a lack of sweating in the heat. This is a medical emergency.
less is more
You may expect markers of workout success, like how long you take to run a certain distance or how many times you can repeat an exercise. But
try to adjust your expectations. Don’t aim for peak physical performance during a heat wave. Your body is already working overtime to stay cool, so don’t push it. Pace yourself, take extra breaks and hydrate (water is best). When resting, remove any gear you might have on, like a bike helmet, and cool off.
use the buddy system
Rather than exercising outdoors alone, go with someone else so you can keep an eye on each other and make sure you are each handling the heat okay. You can also remind each other to keep hydrated.

5 ways “loud budgeting” could save you money
There’s a social media movement gaining traction right now that’s helping people to normalize talking about money. It’s called “loud budgeting” – a financial strategy that puts your money aspirations at the forefront for others to see. The trend encourages people to be more honest about their finances and say no to purchases or events they can’t afford, or don’t wish to put their money towards. For example, telling a friend that you can’t go out to a concert because you’re saving money to pay off your car loan.
Here are five tips on how you can make loud budgeting work for you.
get started with a budget
When it comes to budgeting, it’s important to be aware of the amount you bring home after taxes, the amount you spend on fixed expenses and how much you put into savings and investments.
A more accurate picture of your financial situation can be obtained by keeping a monthly record of your earnings, expenses and investments. There are online tools, including the TD Personal Cash Flow Calculator and the TD Financial Health Assessment Tool, that can be helpful when it comes to crunching those numbers.
set clear financial goals and priorities
Ensure your financial objectives align with the kind of life you’ve envisioned for yourself. For example, if
you’re saving for a down payment on a new house, consider putting a photo of your dream home where you can see it every day to stay motivated and achieve your long-term priorities.
track your spending
Take time to examine your most recent bank statements or use a budgeting app to find out where your money is going each month. What’s the difference between what you’re earning and what you’re spending? Do you have enough cash in your savings account to act as a safety net?
avoid impulse purchases
To avoid spontaneous or impulsive spending, give yourself a
24-hour block of time to consider whether you should make the purchase. Is it a need or a want? The 24hour rule can help you to keep the focus on your long-term financial objectives, ensuring greater success in the long run.
communicate clearly
Make time and space to discuss your financial needs, values and aspirations with friends and family. By sharing your financial plans with others, you’re not only keeping yourself accountable, but you may also inspire others to do the same.
Loud budgeting removes the stigma of talking about money and can help you stay on track and reach your financial goals sooner. ■

moving sale tips
BY CHUCK RESNICK
When it comes to moving your household, sometimes you just can’t take it all. Before packing, take a look around. You can simplify your move by downsizing.
The best way to do this is by selling old or unused items at a garage sale. It will help you get organized before the big move, save you some money and also bring in some extra cash.
Make your sale wheelchair accessible and leave plenty of room for people to wander through.
To pull off a successful garage sale follow these tips:
collect
Gather as much of your old possessions as possible. Even things you dismiss as junk could be worth some money. Lawn mowers, baseball cards and salt and pepper shakers are some of the big garage sale sellers. But
don’t try to sell potentially harmful products like old cleaning chemicals, or baby cribs or car seats that don’t meet new standards.
spruce up
Clean dirty items – you’ll be more likely to get your asking price. Polish old furniture or a splash of a new coat of paint.
collaborate
Exercise your options and combine your sale with a neighbour. This will not only add to what you’re offering but also help get the word out to more people – not to mention help cover any ad costs. Check out local church groups or community associations – they may be hosting a collective sale you can join.
advertize
Spread the word to make the most of your garage sale. Advertise in local newspapers and online, noting key items you have to sell. Post bold “Garage Sale” signs with your address on nearby street corners the night before your sale.
price
Price your items at 50 to 75 per cent off the original price. Buyers are looking for bargains, so expect to give an extra 10 to 20 per cent off the price you tag. Decide before if you will accept personal cheques. If not, post a sign saying so. Have coins in your cash box or money belt for change.
sell
The fun part. Play music and place big furniture at the entranceway to usher in your buyers. Group items into specific categories – tools, toys, kitchen, etc. If possible, plug in any lamps or light fixtures.
Make your sale wheelchair accessible and leave plenty of room for people to wander through. It also never hurts to have coffee or lemonade and muffins available for 50 cents at a side table.
Garage sales can be an organizer’s best friend. With less clutter, there’s less to worry about moving, making for a more laid-back moving day.
