why reducing your garbage is more important than you think
R
educe, reuse, and recycle are the first three words Canadians learn when taught to protect the environment from plastics. All three of the “R’s” play an important role in sustainability, but reducing waste is more important than you think. If we focus on reducing our individual plastic use, we can avoid the unnecessary use of essential resources, including materials, energy, and water. We live in the age of disposable products and heavy plastic packaging. Although these products are often con-

venient, they can impact the environment. In Canada, we generate over 3 million tons of plastic waste a year, and one-third of that amount is from plastic packaging. While the COVID-19 pandemic has been difficult for everyone it has made almost half of Canadians more aware of the amount of waste they generate. Some simple ways to reduce your plastic waste include:
choose products with less packaging
Often products contain additional packaging used for adver-
tising purposes. This packaging is not necessary and more often ends up in the waste. When shopping, looking for options with minimal packaging.
look for biodegradable products
These products break down naturally, so they don’t put as much of a burden on the planet. You can find biodegradable swaps for just about any product. For example, Lysol has new disinfecting wipes that are biodegradable and that are com-
9
postable, appropriate for municipalities that contain the appropriate composting facilities. They can break down in as little as six weeks in the proper setting and are just as effective as their traditional wipes, killing 99.9 percent of germs.
buy products in bulk
To reduce waste, look to purchase products that can be found in bulk and decanted into smaller reusable containers. By doing this you will avoid additional packaging waste. ■

is cooking
a source of air pollution in your home? As seasons change, our minds turn to thoughts of comfort foods and home-cooked meals. But did you know that cooking is one of the largest sources of air pollution in your home?
R
egardless of your ability to create a delicious meal, cooking can affect indoor air quality and have an impact on your health. Whether you cook on a gas or electric stove, cooking creates small particles from heating oil, fat and other food ingredients, especially at high temperatures. In addition to particles, gas burners produce carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and formaldehyde. Meanwhile, electric burners release a lot of ultrafine particles in the air. Exposure to these particles and pollutants can cause or worsen a
wide range of health problems such as eye, nose or throat irritation, headaches, fatigue, wheezing and coughing. Young children and people with asthma, other respiratory issues and heart or lung diseases are especially vulnerable. To reduce health risks, be sure to use the range hood exhaust fan while cooking and follow these tips: • Always turn the exhaust fan on when using any stove burner. • Use the highest setting on your exhaust fan, especially when cooking something that can produce smoke or odours, such as frying, sautéing or grilling.
•C ook on back burners if possible, because the range hood exhausts this area more effectively. • Make sure your range hood exhaust fan vents to the outdoors. If you don’t have a range hood exhaust fan, you may want to consider installing one or improving the air quality of your home in other ways, such as opening windows, running a central heating or cooling fan, or running a portable air cleaner while cooking. P
rofessional organizer Michele Delory believes a clean and organized home can inspire joy and happiness, but you’re not alone if you find that doing the cleaning is less than inspiring. So, here are Mi-

chele’s practical tips and ideas to get you started.
just 10 minutes
Michele suggests that your house can stay cleaner by devoting just 10 minutes a day to short cleanups rather than tak-
ing on marathon whole-home cleaning sessions once every few weeks. A dedicated 10 minutes each day to refresh surfaces and floors or tackle one room at a time can keep you actively thinking about cleanliness and its importance in your daily life.
21
EXTRAS
put it away
Studies show that you can greatly reduce messes by putting things away, not down, when you are done using them. This pre-emptive action helps you avoid creating messes in the first place and can reap big rewards.
listen up
To help create the most positive overall experience when doing chores, experts suggest listening to music or a podcast while you work. You could check out a new album or gain new perspectives by tuning into your favourite show – in either case, you’re getting something done and entertaining yourself at the same time.
grab and go
plan ahead
“By developing a weekly cleaning routine, you can ensure that all areas of your space get attention over the span of your schedule,” says Michele. “With a routine and maybe a list, you can also avoid deciding each day
which task you might want to tackle, because after a while your routine becomes just that – routine.” Using a free online resource like downloadable habit trackers or cleaning guides can also keep you on track throughout the week.
To make things even easier for yourself, gather all your cleaning supplies and put them in a caddy or bag. That way, whenever you go to clean anything, all the tools you need are ready for you, and you won’t have to waste time locating that brush, spray or cloth. One of Michele’s favourite tools to have on hand is a mini vac, such as the Tineco Pure One Mini S4 smart handvac. “It’s perfect for preventing accumulation of dust, crumbs or even pesky shavings,” she says. The handvac is available at Costco and comes with a smart sensor that turns from red to blue as you clean so you know you’ve picked up all of the mess.■ — News Canada 4Rent.ca

10 THINGS
your mover BY CHUCK RESNICK
wil not do
When you hire a moving company, it is important to understand what services the firm can and cannot provide. At Two Men and a Truck – Canada, we pride ourselves on accommodating our clients in every possible way. But there are some requests that pose problems. There are 10 common issues that most movers won’t do, or are forbidden to do by law.
1
Gas-powered items such as lawn mowers that are not emptied of fuel cannot be moved by your moving company. This is in accordance with Ontario’s Health and Safety Act and Hazard Materials Act. The law prohibits us from transporting these types of goods.
move live plants
Many movers, including our company, have their own guidelines about this. Securing plants takes a level of special treatment that we are not prepared to offer. If customers need advice on how to move plants, we can help them find companies that are equipped to do so. In our
4Rent.ca

move containers of fuel or hazardous materials

experience, most customers move plants themselves.
move items larger than we have the ability to do
When we see items that are too big and bulky for us to handle, we will let you know. Upright pianos, for example, are incredibly heavy and usually require heavy-duty dollies and a truck with a lift gate. We can definitely help you with any size of piano. Massive wall units can also present challenges. We can help you find the right firm to move those specialty items, if required.
4
move personal valuables
It makes sense that small valuables like jewelry, stocks, bonds and cash are items you should transport yourself.
moving animals
Moving animals takes special care, and movers are not willing to take responsibility for pets during a move. You are best to arrange for them to be somewhere else on moving day, and then ease them into their new surroundings yourself.
provide insurance coverage for all items
Ontario’s Conditions of Carriage requires movers to insure items at least 60 cents per pound. If our coverage does not include antiques or works of art, we can arrange it through our Insurer as long as these items are itemized upfront. Your homeowner insurance policy may also have a rider for goods in transit.
27
7 8 10 9 rearrange your furniture
Sometimes people ask us to rearrange their furniture at their destination, which adds to the time estimated for your move. We are happy to provide you with this service.
install major appliances
We are neither plumbers nor electricians. If you require installation of your major appliances, arrange to have those professionals help you during your moving week.
stop the clock because of a change on your end
We get paid from the time we leave our facility until the time we return. If you change the parameters of your contract or something unex-
pected happens on your end to cause a delay, the move continues on as planned but will likely extend longer than your estimate.
load pre-packed boxes, items into a storage pod
We do not do “load only moves.” If someone else is driving the vehicle and the goods are not under our control, we can’t take responsibility for the condition of the goods at their final destination. All of the above help ensure that your possessions arrive at the other end in one piece, with the safety of you, your family and the movers in mind. And, that’s our job! Visit twomen.ca to find a location near you. ■
