up front BACK TO SCHOOL: PREPARING FOR A NEW SCHOOL YEAR
The last days of summer are bittersweet, a mix of lingering leisure and the anticipation of new beginnings. The long, lazy days gradually shorten, and families plan final beach outings, barbecues, and late-night movies, making the most of the warm weather and relaxed schedules.
Preparing for a new school year involves careful planning, organization, and a positive mindset. By taking proactive steps, students, parents, and teachers can ensure a smooth and successful transition back to school.
The atmosphere subtly shifts towards preparation. The once carefree days start to include a sense of urgency as the back-to-school season approaches. Shopping trips become frequent, with parents and children alike searching stores for new clothes, shoes, and the latest school supplies. The sight of colourful new backpacks indicates the switch from summer break to a new school year is approaching.
For students, there’s a mix of excitement and anxiety. Younger children might be eager to see friends again and share stories of their summer adventures, while older students might feel the pressure of upcoming academic challenges. Parents juggle their own tasks, from arranging
carpools to adjusting work schedules, ensuring everything is set for the first day back.
As summer ends, familiar routines start to fall back into place. Bedtimes shift earlier, alarms are set for the morning, and schedules quickly fill up with orientation sessions, sports practices, and school events. There’s an unmistakable sense of excitement and preparedness in the air around the house.
Even with all the hustle and bustle, families may come together for a final summer feast or plan a last adventure to make memorable memories. Discussions around the dinner table often revolve around setting goals for the upcoming school year, achieving academic success, and strategies for balancing extracurricular activities and homework.
As the first day of school arrives, there’s excitement in the air. Kids put on their new outfits, backpacks filled with new supplies, and step out with a mix of nervousness and anticipation. The transition from summer to school marks a new chapter, full of promise and potential.
Here’s to a fantastic new school year filled with learning, growth, and memorable experiences!

THE POSTPARTUM NUTRITION COOKBOOK: A POSTPARTUM RECOVERY RESOURCE
A woman’s body undergoes incredible changes during pregnancy and delivery, so it’s only natural that it needs time and healthy nutrients to fully recover. While there is a lot of information available about pregnancy and delivery, there is very little about the postpartum recovery period. What is available often isn’t helpful, evidencebased, or easily accessible. It also tends to focus more on the baby’s needs than the mother’s.
As new mothers themselves, friends and Registered Dietitians Diana Licalzi and Ashley Reaver discovered just how limited the information was while they were going through their own postpartum periods and constantly looking for information about postpartum recovery and nutritional needs.
WORDS BY LORRAINE PELLEY
information and decided to create a comprehensive resource so other new moms could easily access all the information they needed about the postpartum period and their body’s nutritional needs.
Their upcoming book, The Postpartum Nutrition Cookbook, is a comprehensive resource that provides parents with factual, detailed, and evidence-based information about the stages of pregnancy and post-pregnancy recovery. The first two chapters cover everything moms need to know about the changes their bodies go through during the pregnancy, labour and delivery, lactation, and postpartum periods as well as their body’s nutritional needs during each period.
The Postpartum Nutrition Cookbook covers the acute postpartum stage, which occurs within the first six weeks post-delivery, and the four distinct phases of healing during this stage. It also clearly discusses the shortterm postpartum recovery, or the fourth trimester, which is 12 weeks post-delivery, and the long-term postpartum recovery period, which can take 18 to 24 months.
In part two of the book, Licalzi and Reaver discuss pantry and kitchen essentials that new moms need to help make meal preparation much easier. They also provide valuable tips on meal planning and stocking the freezer.
Part three has over 100 delicious, nutritious, and easy-to-make recipes. All the recipes come from Licalzi and Reaver and their families. Throughout the pages, parents will find simple, nutrient-dense, and delicious recipes for all three meals of the day as well as recipes for tasty snacks and desserts.
Reaver with long-term health goals in mind. The recipes were chosen so parents can continue to use the cookbook as their families grow and evolve.
As new moms who know how tiring the postpartum period is and how limited a parent’s time is, Licalzi and Reaver designed their book so that the content flows easily throughout the different sections so parents can easily navigate through the sections to find the information they’re looking for quickly. All of the content is broken down into identifiable sections and is laid out in a consistent and easy-to-follow format. Parents can read the whole book or go right to a particular section or topic to find the information they are looking for.
Through their ongoing searches and chats, they knew they needed to do something about the lack of
Their book provides detailed content about the postpartum period that is rarely found in other resources.
The authors include helpful tips and modification options with each recipe along with the nutritional information of each meal. The recipes are great for the whole family and were chosen by Licalzi and
The Postpartum Nutrition Cookbook will be available in September. The two are also developing an online course for new moms to complement the information in their book, which will come out at the same time the book is launched. DO YOU REMEMBER ELMER THE SAFETY ELEPHANT?
“Since the late 1940s, Elmer has held a special place in the hearts of many Canadians of a certain age,” says Lewis Smith, Manager, National Projects, Canada Safety Council, “as a well-known symbol of safety education, teaching children about road and bike safety.”
Even though Elmer may not be a familiar mascot to many today, his safety tips are still relevant. To ensure kids and parents have a safe summer, Toronto Police Constable Peter De Quintal reminds kids and parents alike that even though school is out, safety doesn’t take a holiday.
Be aware of your surroundings “Drivers and children need to be extra cautious during the summer,” De Quintal says. “Now that it’s not a structured environment like during the school year, kids can be found playing in the playground, at a park, or in their front yards at any time of the day. They might be easily distracted and not fully aware of their surroundings. Instead of
WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM
remembering to stop and look both ways, they may react impulsively, like chasing after a ball that may have rolled onto the road, rather than asking an adult for help.”
Stay safe, play it safe –wear a helmet and get a bell
“If you’re going to ride a bike, wear a helmet and protect your head,” he says. “By law, children and youth under the age of 18 are required to wear a helmet when cycling in Ontario. So, wear a helmet whether cycling, rollerblading, or skateboarding, and remember the 2-V-1 Rule.
2 – Your helmet should fit 2 fingerwidths above your eyebrows – it shouldn’t tilt up or down.
V – Make sure you have a snug fit, and don’t wear a cap underneath. The side straps should meet and form a V below each ear.
1 – You shouldn’t be able to fit more than one finger between your chin and the fastened strap.
As for the bicycle bell, think of it as the car horn for your bike. It’s a helpful tool for alerting pedestrians and promoting safety for all.”
Pedestrian safety means to see and be seen
“Always cross from an intersection; never cross in the middle of the road. And remember to walk facing traffic if there is no sidewalk,” says De Quintal. “This way, you can see the oncoming traffic, and they can see you. Plus, you can get out of the way if necessary.”
Did you know preventable traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for children aged one to nine?
“I’ve given out more than my share of stop sign infractions. Stop signs are not optional. It’s hard to understand
Toronto Police
Police Constable
Peter De Quintal
why drivers don’t seem to respect it.
When you come to a stop sign, you must come to a complete stop, which means your wheels must stop being in motion. And, if there is a painted white line, you stop at that white line, not beyond it and not way before it. Those few extra seconds allow your vehicle to come to a full, complete stop. I can assure you it won’t delay your day, but it could save a life.”
And for all the parents out there, let’s lead by example! That means no jaywalking, always crossing at the lights, stopping and looking both ways before crossing the street, walking your bike at the lights and taking a pause from your cell phone and earbuds – stay focused and avoid distractions.
DID YOU KNOW PREVENTABLE TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS ARE THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH FOR CHILDREN AGED ONE TO NINE?

family fun CHILLING IN COTTAGE COUNTRY: MUSKOKA CHILLS
Kids love ice cream, don’t they? Two teens loved it so much that they opened their own ice cream shop, which has quickly become a go-to place in Muskoka on a hot summer day.
While most teens spending a summer at the family cottage dream of endless days on the water, cousins George and Maria Kyriazis traded lazing away the summer for something far different: running Muskoka Chills, their Port Carling business dealing ice cream and all things cool and refreshing.
“We wanted to spend time together at the family cottage and figured the best way to do that was to get jobs in the area,” explained George. “Eventually, rather than go through the process of looking for a job, we decided to create our own last summer.”
Muskoka Chills opened on June 9, 2023. At the time, George was 16 and Maria still 15.
You get a sense of the cousins’ youth and good humour even before meeting them dishing out
WORDS BY ANDREW HIND
ice cream from behind the counter.
A chalkboard by the roadside announces the ice-cream-themed Joke of the Day: “Why doesn’t ice cream play tennis? Because it has a soft serve!” “The ice cream jokes are part of our signature,” George says. “It’s a business, but we want to have fun as well, to entertain people, to do something memorable, and to express ourselves a bit—we are only 17 after all.”
Also setting them apart is the wide selection of cool treats offered.
There’s ice cream, both soft serve and 13 flavours of scooped Kawarthas Ice Cream (in cones or cups), but also Icees, frozen cappuccinos, cold drinks, and Celsius energy drinks.
The location is perfect, right in Port Carling amidst the shops – a perfect respite on a hot day walking through the quaint but lively and trendy village.
And there’s lots in Port Carling to grab children’s attention. Marvel at boats passing through the historic locks between lakes Muskoka and Rosseau. Take a stroll around lock-side James Bartleman Park and spend a leisurely hour at Muskoka Lakes Museum (mlmuseum.com). Maybe even book a cruise aboard the 60-year-old Peerless II to enjoy stunning Muskoka scenery (sunsetcruises.ca).
But kids being kids, it will be ice cream from Muskoka Chills that will likely top their experience for the day.

Parents want their children to be successful, healthy, and happy. That often means providing the best education they can, encouraging quality friendships and being supportive when a child may need some extra guidance. Although there is no magic formula to guide children toward becoming the best versions of themselves, here are steps that parents and other caregivers can take to promote youngsters’ personal growth.
• Respond to children’s sounds and gestures. Early childhood development specialists say parents should stimulate baby talk and treat it as real conversation. Individuals should respond to baby’s gurgling and actions and engage throughout the day. As the child grows, responding to their words, questions and thoughts can help expand a child’s vocabulary and boost reading levels later in life.
• Help kids find their lanes. Parents may only know what they experienced and the paths they took. It is reasonable for mothers and fathers to want their children
PARENTS CAN BE THEIR KIDS’ BIGGEST FANS, BUT NOT AT THE COST OF DOING EVERYTHING FOR THEM OR SHIELDING CHILDREN FROM DISAPPOINTMENT
parenting
HELP A CHILD GROW AS A PERSON
to follow in their footsteps, and sometimes parents push their kids into paths that do not fit. Helping kids find their niche requires trial and error, patience, and even creativity. Eventually children will discover their passions, particularly when encouraged by their parents.
• Share your own stories. Children may be embarrassed by struggles or failures and want to give up.
• Provide love and support, not criticism. Parents can be their kids’ biggest fans, but not at the cost of doing everything for them or shielding children from disappointment. They also should not be harsh critics. To help shape strong children who can grow and mature, parents must find a balance between being supportive and watching every move and preventing any obstacle. Adversity can help kids grow.
One of the best ways parents can be supportive is by sharing stories of one’s own struggles and how they overcame them. Perhaps a parent can help a kid who is finding material in school challenging by telling a story about a poor test grade and how he or she needed tutoring but was able to improve performance later.
• Talk about mistakes that ultimately proved learning opportunities. Children may believe they have to be perfect at everything, and that can set them up for failure when they don’t accomplish every goal. Adults can offer an example of a mistake they made that helped them grow, such as getting stuck in foul weather on a hike because they didn’t check the weather and having to travel for long stretches in wet shoes. That learning experience may have helped the adults be more mindful of being prepared for outdoor events.
• Make time for fun. Success doesn’t always come just from hard work. It also involves knowing when it is time to let loose and unwind with enjoyable activities. Then again, learning opportunities don’t always need to be chores. Learning through play and exploration also is possible. Children can grow and develop positive traits with support from their parents.

WHERE INSPIRATION FUELS
Step into a world where high school isn’t just about textbooks and tests. At KCS Senior School, we redefine education with experiences that are meaningful, healthy, and unforgettable. If you think all schools are the same, prepare to be pleasantly surprised.
Academics remain at the core of our mission. We proudly meet Ontario curriculum standards, ensuring our students receive a robust educational foundation. What sets us apart is our commitment to enriching this foundation through innovative offsite learning experiences. Beyond traditional classrooms, our students engage in hands-on learning that deepens their understanding of the world.
KCS boasts a rich history of educational excellence, spanning 35 years as a co-ed Junior School renowned for individualized, placebased learning and the Four Doors to Learning Program. Building upon this legacy, our Senior School, serving grades 9 to 12, continues to uphold these values while expanding opportunities for deeper exploration and growth.
We are proud to be the only CAISaccredited Senior School in West Toronto, a testament to our dedication to exceptional standards in education and student development.
One standout feature at KCS Senior School is our commitment to off-site learning. Beyond the classroom walls, students explore real-world environments that deepen their understanding of subjects like never before. Our unique Path program empowers students to follow their passions, fostering intrinsic motivation and curiosity every step of the way.
But that’s not all. We believe in learning from the best, which
is why courses and enrichment programs include input from our Learning Partners. These professionals have real-world experience, ranging from neuroscientists to chefs, who collaborate with our students. Imagine being inspired by experts who are shaping their fields!
At KCS Senior School, we don’t just teach subjects; we show students why it all matters. With guidance from dedicated teachers and support from
our vibrant community, students not only learn but also apply their knowledge to create positive change.
It’s about answering that age-old question: “Why do we need to learn this?”
Recently, our students showcased their Path projects at an event that garnered praise from Chris Bingley, a UK school administrator engaged in educational research. He commented, “Thank you so much for inviting me to the showcase earlier. It
was such an inspiring morning - my mind is bursting at the seams with learning and ideas. Please pass on thanks to your fantastic staff and incredible students for making me feel so welcome. The Market Place and presentations that I saw were excellent - the agency and autonomy demonstrated by the students was outstanding. It was a privilege to be there.”

LEARNERS TODAY, LEADERS TOMORROW Northmount School
Northmount School is a Catholic independent boys preparatory school (JK – 8). Its supportive environment helps boys achieve their greatest potential, emphasizing academic excellence, character development, values and service, which lead to a meaningful, balanced and fulfilling life.
Northmount School provides a sound, stimulating and coherent education to prepare boys in their development as responsible citizens. The school helps each student to reach his full potential, develop critical thinking skills, self-discipline, a respect for others, and a strong moral character. We recognize that the parents are the boys’ first teachers and thus we enter into a partnership
between parents, students and the school to establish a rich and vibrant community life.
We deeply respect and are guided by our tradition, its spirituality, appeal to the common good, and its values. We are multi-cultural and our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Our Catholic roots encourage a belief in the dignity of every person and a respect for a variety of faith traditions.
Our boys learn to support one another in a nurturing environment; one that is made possible by our superior and highly committed staff who are dedicated to implementing Northmount’s goals. The world’s next generation will need leadership from responsible individuals who
are morally sound and whose values speak to the Truth. For boys who aspire to have character when men, the journey begins at Northmount.
Our school community finds its foundations in the teaching of the Catholic Church. Families of all faiths, however, are welcome, as we see our school as a microcosm of society. We teach from a Catholic perspective and this informs how we teach, understand right from wrong, and guide our boys to manhood.
The family plays an important role in Northmount’s vision for education. As the primary educators in their children’s lives, parents are active in the academic, co-curricular and faith development of their boys and in
helping them to develop character. The school seeks out opportunities to engage with the family to round out the experiences in a young boy’s life. Our academic program is one of which our school community is extremely proud, and our dedicated teachers ascribe to pedagogy that focuses on the needs of boys using contemporary tools. As a single-sex school and with significant research to back this focus, Northmount ensures that boys develop the necessary academic skills to find success in high school and beyond. We would love to have the opportunity to host your family for a visit. Please book a tour and find out more about how Northmount could be the right school for your son.
