EDITORS NOTE

up front

BEST WAY TO HELP YOUR KIDS? DON’T One of the secrets to raising your children to love, respect, and be confident in everything they do is – don’t help them! What? Yes, you heard me correctly. No, I am not suggesting letting them fly free and learn everything on their own. The worst thing a parent can do when their child has a problem is to solve it for them. Why? Parents often take on or inherit their children’s problems for a variety of reasons including: 1. You may have once crossed the same bridge, so doing it for them will save them the trouble of discovering it for themselves. 2. It’s easier than explaining it to your child. 3. You’ve done this for yourself for years, so why not do it for them now? 4. There is nothing you wouldn’t do for your child because you love them so much. One could continue listing reasons for how we overextend ourselves to assist them in every way. When things get out of control as parents, we tend to blame ourselves and ask, “Where did I go wrong?”

The parents I have encountered often say, “I thought I did everything I could to help them and did everything I could to make life easier” or “I don’t understand why my kids can’t think for themselves. I did it all by myself. No one helped me.” When you hear that, the light bulb still doesn’t go off. You may reply with, “I know, right!” Wrong! The truth is that we help too much. Please don’t be mistaken – there’s nothing, absolutely nothing wrong with helping your children. However, we should let them fall so that they can get up on their own. It is important for them to think of solutions and resolve their problems on their own. The safest and most effective way to help them is from a distance. It may be hard to watch, but it’s the best gift you could ever give them. Offer them knowledge, support and point them in the right direction. Creating self-confident and self-efficient and independent children is the best gift you can give yourself. And, always remember Que Sera, Sera, whatever will be, will be.

HELPING GIRLS TO BECOME “STEMINISTS” WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM Why is coding so important for our kids to learn? When you consider the impact of computing in our everyday lives, whether it’s shopping online or using our smartphones at work, in school and in our homes with smart technology activating our lights and heat, not to mention social media— coding is at its core. And here’s the eureka moment: anyone can learn to code. Mastercard wants to open up this field to more girls and women who maybe one day will join its team of cybersecurity professionals in Canada to fight cyber criminals and help keep sensitive information safe on a global scale. Now in its eighth year, Girls4Tech is Mastercard’s signature science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) program geared

toward giving girls in middle and high school access to STEM resources and career exploration tools.

“THE EXPERIENCE FROM GIRLS4TECH WAS SO INSTRUMENTAL THAT THE ANSWER OF WHICH FIELD TO TAKE ON IN 11TH GRADE WAS PRETTY CLEAR TO ME – I CHOSE PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY AND MATHEMATICS. NOW, IN UNIVERSITY, I’M ENGAGED IN COMPUTER SCIENCE HONOURS AND I AM TRULY ENJOYING WHAT I AM DOING. I WOULD SAY GIRLS4TECH WAS A BIG PART OF ME FINALIZING THIS DECISION.” – EVA, GIRLS4TECH ALUMNA AND MASTERCARD INTERN 8

CITY PARENT | August 2022

With a goal of creating opportunities for tomorrow, Mastercard recently announced the expansion of its Girls4Tech digital program in Canada, broadening its availability to all provinces and territories across the country. Partnering with Discovery Education, an education tech leader, its state-of-the-art digital platform provides support for learning everywhere. “Many of the jobs for future generations will require a background in STEM, but there continues to be a low proportion of women graduating and pursuing these fields as adults,” says Sasha Krstic, president of Mastercard in Canada. “Giving girls equal opportunities is important to removing the barriers they face

and allow them to pursue and thrive in STEM careers that will help contribute to a diverse and equitable workforce for the future. Mastercard is helping students to think about some of the big issues and challenges our communities face. Our mission is to find the next generation of problem solvers and creative thinkers.” The program offers a robust array of no-cost, standards-aligned, and on-demand digital resources that illustrate how technology can be used to solve the problems kids care about. Taking it a step further, by using inquiry-based activities and real-world challenges like cybersecurity, Girls4Tech helps to inspire girls to dream big and show them how their skills and strengths can lead to a STEM career as a cryptologist, fraud detective or even as a data scientist. Since the world relies so heavily on technology, all the more reason why some educators refer to coding as the new literacy. Mastercard’s Girl4Tech has engaged more than two million girls across the globe. With the expanded program available in Canada in both English and French, the hope is that Girls4Tech will spark the interest of Canadian girls in topics like artificial intelligence and cyber security and apply their problem-solving skills and curious mindset to become future “STEMinist.” girls4tech.com

FIND THE PERFECT FAMILY VACATION ESCAPE IN MUSKOKA Let’s face it. You don’t want an OK family holiday – you want an OMG one. We knew we’d found one when, only a few hours after arrival, our daughter hugged the personable resort employee she had quickly come to befriend. “I love you, David.” When a four-year-old does that, you know you’ve selected the right resort. Thankfully, we didn’t have to venture far for that memorable, can’t-wait-to-boast-about-it holiday experience. It’s right here in Ontario at JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka Resort. In Muskoka, water and summer vacations have always gone handin-hand, like blackflies and May. The Rosseau has options in spades. There’s the allure of Lake Rosseau, where high-speed boats whizz past in the distance, racing toward one of the millionaire’s cottages that line the

shores. Children frolic in the shallows while parents settle into beach recliners under shaded cabanas.

Take the fun out onto the lake aboard a canoe, kayak, stand-up-paddle board, or rented jet ski. Hop aboard a pontoon boat for a sight-seeing cruise. Not far away from the lakeshore, an immersive splash pad entices squealing little ones. They race about in contented chaos while parents luxuriate in drinks and moments of solitude from comfortable chairs nearby. The waterfront has proven so popular, that guests are reluctant to leave it for lunch. If you can’t bring the guests to the meal, you bring the meal to the guests, reasoned Shaun Crymble, director of food and beverage. “People didn’t want to leave the water for lunch – you can’t blame them – so we opened a casual lakeside dining venue, the Deck, which has proven extremely popular with its stunning views and the woodfired oven turning out amazing thin crust pizza.”

Rain doesn’t spoil ‘water time’ at The Rosseau. Huddled alongside and within the resort’s main building is a beautiful indoor-outdoor pool, heated and open year-round, regardless of weather. If you can pull yourself away from the water – a big if – you’ll find plenty more to entertain you. For children, there’s daily activities like mini-paddle painting. For adults, a full-service spa (HydroSpa Muskoka, labelled as a ‘spa by the water’ and boasting a private pool for spa guests), bike rides along quiet country lanes, and evening guided nature walks. But the lake always beckons. Like a siren’s call, you can’t resist. The day ends in perfect fashion: sitting on your room’s balcony, gazing out on mirror-smooth Lake Rosseau, the sky painted pink with the promise of fair weather tomorrow, with a loon calling goodnight somewhere in the near distance.

family fun

THERE’S LOTS GOING ON AT THE HAMILTON MUSEUM OF STEAM AND TECHNOLOGY WORDS BY LORRAINE PELLEY If you’re looking for something fun to do with your family this summer, the Hamilton Museum of Steam and Technology is a great place to visit. Located on Woodward Avenue by Queen Elizabeth Way, this historic landmark is the oldest building in Hamilton, and home to the oldest stationary steam engines in Canada. The Hamilton Museum dates back to Canada’s Industrial Revolution. The stone building and sophisticated steam engines were built in the late 1850s to address Hamilton’s contaminated water issues that plagued the area and spread diseases such as cholera. During the planning phase, the politicians and visionaries of the time wanted a water-treatment system that would proclaim Hamilton as one of Canada’s most prominent and forward-thinking cities.

Thomas Keefer, a well-known Canadian engineer, designed the state-of-the-art 70-tonne, two-cylinder steam engine. Once completed and fully operational, each steam engine could pump over 227,124 litres of fresh water per hour to the city’s main reservoir. The Victorian-era stone building that housed the steam engines was constructed by local stonemason George Worthington, and is equally magnificent. The Hamilton Waterworks, also called Hamilton Waterworks Pumping Station, was officially opened on Sept. 18, 1860, by Edward VII, Prince of Wales during his Canadian royal tour. Today, the original building that houses the Hamilton steam museum is a designated historical landmark and a tribute to the city’s remarkable past.

The fully restored building and steam engines pay homage to the region’s innovation during Canada’s industrial revolution. There is plenty to do at the Hamilton Museum of Steam and Technology. You can watch a daily demonstration of the steam engines in motion and learn more about the history and design of the oldest building in Hamilton and the uniquely designed steam engines. Take a guided tour with a knowledgeable interpreter, offered daily, or take your own independent tour around the facility. During your walk, enjoy the many exhibits highlighting the magnificence of the steam engines’ design and function. There are several interchanging and permanent exhibits throughout the museum featuring the dynamic

history of Hamilton’s famous water system. The museum also offers many special events and drop-in activities for families. Take a ride on the miniature train with the Golden Horseshoe Live Steamers during Live Steamer Days that run from May to September. Enjoy watching your kids create their own project or craft during scheduled drop-in activity sessions. For a one-of-akind experience, book your time to host a birthday party or other social gathering with friends and family at the oldest building or drop into the daily workshop to create your own project. After you finish your tour, visit the museum’s gift shop where you will find a variety of toys, souvenirs and project kits for kids of all ages.

EXPECTANT FATHERS WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM Did you know according to research on BabyCenter.ca, 88 per cent of millennial dads feel it’s at least somewhat important to be the “perfect dad” – a higher percentage than millennial moms. But where do these dads go for advice? Walk into any bookstore and check online; the resources for mothers-tobe are plentiful. Parenting references still focus on the mothers with fathers often in supporting roles, but that is changing. Drew Soleyn, director of Dad Central Ontario (which promotes father involvement as part of the Canada-wide Dad Central network), points out that’s why Dad Central exists. For over 20 years, it has built a network of resources for dads and organizations that connect, inspire and train dads and communities to build healthy children and families. “It started with the recognition that fathers play an important role in healthy child development,” says Soleyn. “In 2007, there was a research study published in Canada that we affectionately call the convincers. It was essentially a summary of all the research that validated that when fathers are actively involved in raising children, it helps in their development and adds tremendous value to their lives. Dad Central has focused on building the research credibility in communicating the key findings to help people understand and view fathers as vital to parenting and also educating those organizations that serve families about the importance of fathers.” Dad Central has helped change the conversation by advocating for 20 CITY PARENT | August 2022

fathering programs that serve dads’ needs – which are different from mothers. Men may not be sharing the physical changes, but they deal with the emotional and psychological adjustments while making that transition into fatherhood. Although becoming a father can be a rewarding experience, it is also stressful, according to the 2019 Movember study. Seven in 10 (70 per cent) fathers say that their stress levels increased in the 12 months after becoming a father for the first time. “It’s a challenging time for men,” says Soleyn. “They experience a loss

of friendships, connection, changing expectations, extra demands, balancing the pressure of work and family and the expectations of being a more involved father. And depending on the dad-to-be, it ranges from excitement to terrified and everything in between.” To help, Dad Central created NewDadManual.ca, written by and for new dads. It includes a free downloadable manual called 24-HR Cribside Assistance, written in a car manual style with sections called Low Fuel Warning, Under the Hood, etc., with information supported by Peel Public Health and Public Health Canada. “It’s your new

human manual filled with tips, links to videos with experts and dads sharing insights.” DadCentral.ca is also an excellent place for fathers at any point in fatherhood to connect with other dads. You don’t have to face this journey alone. You can help write the manual for other dads by sharing and being a part of this “village” of men becoming fathers – for better or for worse. bang the drum WHY CHILDREN SHOULD BE CREATING MUSIC IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS As the world reflects on the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on communities, restrictions profoundly impacted young people, with playgrounds and parks shut across the world. In some instances, children were told to remain indoors for weeks on end. It’s no surprise then that the great outdoors has been firmly embraced as post-pandemic, the world moves to socializing and playing outside. Could one of the positives taken from the pandemic be that we have a renewed appreciation for our outdoor spaces where we can relax and play? Play is essential for children. One such activity that can be enjoyed is playing musical instruments. There is a growing trend for schools and kindergartens to use outdoor musical instruments, bringing learning outside to the playground due to the pandemic. Percussion

Play, a leading manufacturer of outdoor musical instruments, has seen a 92 percent increase this year in orders from schools and pre-schools in North America, compared to 2020. Moving the classroom outside can help improve learning, but it can also help a child’s social development. Playing musical instruments (as opposed to simply listening to music) is particularly important for human social development because music making is fun and uses different skills that most people usually employ on a day-to-day basis. This means that making music is relaxing and can relieve feelings of stress and anxiety. There is now a growing body of research that demonstrates that playing musical instruments is beneficial for children in terms of improved physical and mental health. Sambro Elementary in Nova Scotia has made use of outdoor

musical instruments with students enjoying the Rainbow Trio. Cobequid and principal Catherine Bouliane designed the playground and she says, “I get to listen to music playing every time the students are outside. I’m across the field, and I hear clear melodic sounds. The instruments are well designed. The sound is clear and matches what the students hear in music class. The instruments are well constructed and sturdy. So glad we decided to add that to our outdoor music area”. The benefits of music for children include: õĘĘ&ÈĘ « ±Í¾s ÂĘÈ sª×±¾¢÷Ę ¤ č confidence, empathy, improved communication skills and intellectual curiosity. Jody Ashfield, founder and CEO of Percussion Play, says it’s not just educational settings that can benefit from outdoor musical instruments. “Parks, trails, libraries and community centres are making music in the great outdoors.” Jody continues: “It’s never been more important to encourage children’s outdoor play, and we want to champion the importance of outdoor music and recognize its ability to promote play and creativity.”

sport surfaces MULTIUSE SPORT COURTS WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM

These days, access to activities like tennis, golf or even a pick-up game of basketball has had its challenges. Nowadays, homeowners are looking at their backyards differently, finding ways to create an entertainment oasis that can keep their kids and family active with no restrictions, and yes, add value to their homes. Landscape designers are seeing homeowners investing in their backyards and seeking solutions that can incorporate outdoor activities naturally into their setting. Although curb appeal is important, the shift has moved to the footprint on which the house sits. For many, it’s about creating outdoor features that will grow with the family – even when the kids leave home and the sky’s the limit. Although a large playing field allows for the design of a multipurpose court – which can include everything from shuffleboard, pickleball to tennis – you don’t need to think big if you’re considering introducing a sports surface to your home. Some have found their backyards make the perfect setting for a half-court, ideal for an afternoon of shooting hoops or playing 3-on-3. Others have found ways to incorporate the multiuse surfaces to extend the use of their patios, including installing a miniature putting green with artificial turf that your friends would swear is the real thing – with none of the hassles of upkeep. Markham’s David Shaw of Barber Sports Surfaces Ltd. says, “Some

24 CITY PARENT | August 2022

people don’t have the space to put in a full-sized court as it can eat up a lot of land, but that’s where customization is an option. Whatever you decide, there is a surface that can meet your needs and budget, even if you’re trying to incorporate a smaller play area for the children to play on.” When it comes to multiuse courts, today, there are a variety of surfaces. From concrete, synthetic turf in nylon and polypropylene, as well as polypropylene tiles that can be snapped together, to the Rolls Royce

of surfaces – APT polyurethane, which Shaw says is the ultimate multisports surface available. “Along with it being long-wearing, this surface has the same technology used in gym floors or on some of the best running tracks, providing even more lateral forgiveness and comfort for your joints, knees and hips.” For the Walkers, their three children aged 5, 8 and 12 are hoping for the bells and whistles, including a half-court to shoot hoops and a chance to use it in the winter to play

hockey. A putting green would meet the need of dad who would like to foreshadow the skill of golfer Phil Mickelson and practice his putting; and mom would love a little area to do yoga outdoors. A final decision hasn’t been made, as the wish list keeps evolving, as does their budget. But one thing is for sure, the Walkers’ stay-at-home experience has made them rethink how they can use their yard to its fullest potential – a place the entire family and friends will be able to enjoy for years to come.

helping them to develop character. The school seeks out opportunities to engage with the family to round out the experiences in a young boy’s life. Our academic program is one of which our school community is extremely proud, and our dedicated teachers ascribe to pedagogy that focuses on the needs of boys using contemporary tools. As a single-sex school and with significant research to back this focus, Northmount ensures that boys develop the necessary academic skills to find success in high school and beyond. As a result, gaps have appeared in student learning and critical foundational skills have been left underdeveloped. Students are now missing critical prerequisite skills needed to succeed in and out of the classroom. At Robert Land Academy (RLA), students did not experience the same inconsistencies in their learning and are provided the skills needed to succeed. HOW TO HELP YOUR DAUGHTER HANDLE PEER PRESSURE WORDS BY ELIZABETH CASCIARO FROM APRICOTTON

As your daughter grows, so will the amount of peer pressure she faces. Pressure from friends to act a certain way can be brutal to deal with all on your own, especially when you’re so young – which is why it’s so vital for you as a parent to step in sometimes and lend your daughter a helping hand! 1. Stay calm and non-judgemental: Often, when teens are dealing with peer pressure, they try to hide their struggles from their parents as they’re afraid of getting in trouble. But then, not only will your daughter have to deal with stress related to her social life, but she will also have a fear of what might happen at home in the back of her mind. If you feel like your daughter is hiding something, try not to push her, but let her know that you’re there to talk about anything, and she won’t face any repercussions by coming to you for help. Communicating will make it a lot less likely for your teen to find herself in any problematic or dangerous situations in the long run, as she knows that you can aid her in solving any problems from the start. 2. Celebrate her individuality: As many girls approach and experience puberty, it seems like the last thing they want to do is stand out from the crowd. At what can feel like such an awkward stage for your daughter, she might likely feel like she needs to dress and act like everyone else, giving 40 CITY PARENT | August 2022

up her old style and hobbies. While it’s essential for her to explore new things and grow, it’s also equally important for her to remember her roots and not hold herself back from something she would enjoy because of her fear of looking “uncool.” You can help her celebrate her individuality by encouraging her interests. If she faces any bullying, reminding her that what matters most is doing whatever makes her happy and not following whatever other people think.

3. Please get to know her friends: Staying up to date with your daughter’s social life is super important when it comes to helping her with peer pressure! Not only does it build a sense of trust and community with her friends, but you can also get a good idea of their personalities and make yourself aware of any red flags. Although it’s essential not to control her social life, as she gets farther into her teen years, it’s a good idea to at least keep a mental note of potentially harmful influences so that you’re less likely to be taken by surprise.

4. Understand that sometimes she’ll make mistakes: Nobody’s perfect! Sometimes, your daughter and her friends might make poor decisions or find themselves in a bad situation. It’s normal for both tweens and teens – at this stage of your daughter’s life, she is growing and learning every day, and sometimes a little bit of trial and error is necessary. When this happens, it’s vital for you as a parent to treat it as a learning experience and not overreact. cityparent.com

WHY I’M SICK OF APPLAUDING SLEEP DEPRIVATION WORDS BY AMANDA JEWSON, CANADIAN SLEEP EXPERT AND FOUNDER OF BABY’S BEST SLEEP Yesterday I got off a call with a soonto-be client. She was a brand-new mom and her baby was eightweeks-old. The refrain was familiar, “What have I done? Why didn’t anyone tell me? I’m not coping.” It was sad. What’s sadder is this is not the first time I’ve had this call — this week even! My clients have been clear, no one has prepared them for how challenging not sleeping is and the fact that for some, without interventions, they could be not sleeping for some time. What’s more, the support system around new parents applauds the sleepless nights that come with new parenthood. We make jokes that our new parent friends will never sleep again and we read blogs espousing the normalcy that infants wake several

times overnight (this is normal) and the accolades we give new parents for doing it all (this is toxic). Oh ya – there’s a pandemic. Some babies are only just meeting grandparents for the first time, others aren’t ready yet. The idea that new parents can do it all or are superhuman is toxic. And I know from personal experience. Hands up if you’re the person in your group that can ‘do it all’? Hands up if you’re the person who loves to ‘multi-task’? Hands up if you take pride in never saying no AND NAILING it in the end? This was me. For a long time. I have always been complimented on my work ethic. Bosses, teachers, family members and friends would always comment on my work ethic and would say things like, “If you can’t do it, no one can!’ And I believed them. I was that person. From the time I started working, especially in

my teaching career, I’d take my work home and stay up to 10 p.m. making the BEST lesson plan or creating a new program. Didn’t have enough going on at work? I’d sign up for a course, professional development or create a new club at school. Not enough? I’d sign up for 5Ks and 10Ks to train for. Not enough? Why not learn sewing, and yoga and.. and... and. Then I had kids and for a long time, I was coasting around being that busy mom. I landed my dream teaching job when my first daughter was four months old. I received accolades for my parenting and work ethic. I was applauded for having a small child and working. People were wowed that I pumped three times a day at work and taught. But guess what? I was exhausted. To my core. I started to have panic attacks. Randomly. My hair started to fall out.

I was worried about EVERYTHING. I was getting sick all the time. But on the surface, I was doing everything I usually did – I WAS GOOD at being busy. What the heck was going on? Enter – my therapist, who basically nudged me into a couple of ideas: 1. The business was a way to mask feelings (spoiler alert, they always bubble up!) 2. I had, HAD, HAD to find ways to rest (really. She lovingly read me the riot act when I didn’t.) 3. And this is the kicker – the way I was living my life was destroying my physical health. The short story is that I got it together. The long story is that it’s still a process of unlearning the lessons we tell parents (mostly mothers). I am writing this today because I still see so much busy. So many parents doing it all. Moms bragging about giving birth while holding their cell phones writing work emails. I worry (I don’t judge) about those comments. We’re meant to rest after having a baby. We’re meant to have time not working. We’re meant to have eight hours of sleep. And doing these things doesn’t mean you’re lazy, or bad. You’re resting. And if you don’t make it happen for yourself – especially as a mom – it will never happen. Heed my words. Keep your hair. Stop freaking out. And go to bed – and if you can’t, call us, we can help!

FAQ’S How long do colicky babies cry for? Colicky babies usually cry for three or more hours. It usually starts late afternoon or early evening. The crying typically starts around the same time every day. How do you stop a colic baby from crying? While there are no treatments, swaddling your infant, giving them a pacifier to suck on, placing them in a swing or going for a walk or car ride, positioning them on their side or stomach and playing soft music or white noise radio from radio or TV static, a running hair dryer or vacuum and shushing sounds can help.

health

COLIC AND CRYING BABIES Crying is a baby’s natural way to communicate their needs to their caregivers. Most of the time, once the baby’s needs are met, the crying stops. But for colicky babies, getting them to stop crying can be almost impossible. So what causes colic in babies? Colic in infants is a behavioural condition where an otherwise healthy baby cries uncontrollably for no apparent reason. When an infant is colicky, their cries sound louder than normal, are high pitched and sound more like screams. It is a harmless condition that occurs in approximately one in every five infants and is more common in infants whose mother smoked during pregnancy. Although there have been different studies on how do babies get colic,

44 CITY PARENT | August 2022

the truth is that no one knows what causes it. Many underlying factors have been explored including food allergies, imbalance of healthy bacteria in the digestive tract, digestive tract that is not fully developed, over or under feeding, gas build up, early childhood migraines and stress or anxiety. However, none of these hypotheses have been proven. Doctors diagnose colic using the ‘rules of three’: an infant cries for at least three hours for three or more days per week for three or more consecutive weeks. Colic does not cause short or long-term complications, however if your infant is crying excessively, they should be seen by a doctor for a diagnosis and

to rule out other possible illnesses or conditions. When do babies become colic? Colic can start when an infant is two weeks old and usually peaks between four to six weeks of age. Although it may feel like it will never end leaving many parents to wonder ‘do babies outgrow colic?’ it does eventually subside. Most babies outgrow colic by three to four months of age.

Can breastmilk cause colic? Research has shown breast milk does not cause colic. Can overfeeding a baby cause colic? Research has also shown that overfeeding a baby does not cause colic. However, if a baby is colicky, overfeeding them can cause further discomfort to the infant and intensify their cries.

How to deal with a colic baby Dealing with a colic in infants can be emotionally draining for parents so it is important to take care of yourself as well. Finding ways that work to soothe your baby and getting help are important when dealing with a colicky baby.
