BEST WAY TO HELP YOUR KIDS? DON’T One of the secrets to raising your children to love, óÃöðûûȣ ¯â¿ ºÃ »æâĶ ¿Ãâû Ðâ ÃďÃóĒûÏÐâÍ ûÏÃĒ ¿æ Ðöɋ don’t help them! What? Yes, you heard me correctly. 4æȣ # ¯á âæû öýÍÍÃöûÐâÍ ÜÃûûÐâÍ ûÏÃá ķ Ē ÌóÃà ¯â¿ learn everything on their own. The worst thing a parent can do when their child has a problem is to solve it for them. Why? Parents often take on or inherit their children’s problems for a variety of reasons including: 1. You may have once crossed the same bridge, so doing it for them will save them the trouble of discovering it for themselves. 2. It’s easier than explaining it to your child. 3. You’ve done this for yourself for years, so why not do it for them now? 4. There is nothing you wouldn’t do for your child because you love them so much. One could continue listing reasons for how we overextend ourselves to assist them in every way. When things get out of control as parents, we tend to blame ourselves and ask, “Where did I go
wrong?” The parents I have encountered often say, “I thought I did everything I could to help them and did everything I could to make life easier” or “I don’t understand why my kids can’t think for themselves. I did it all by myself. No one helped me.” When you hear that, the light bulb still doesn’t go off. You may reply with, “I know, right!” Wrong! The truth is that we help too much. Please don’t ºÃ áÐöû¯ÛÃâɋûÏÃóÃɚö âæûÏÐâÍȣ ¯ºöæÜýûÃÜĒ âæûÏÐâÍ wrong with helping your children. However, we should let them fall so that they can get up on their own. It is important for them to think of solutions and resolve their problems on their own. The safest and most effective way to help them is from a distance. It may be hard to watch, but it’s the best gift you could ever give them. Offer them knowledge, support and point them in the right ¿ÐóûûÐæâȨ óïûÐâÍ öÃÜÌɍ»æâĶ ¿Ãâû ¯â¿ öÃÜÌɍÃÌĶ »ÐÃâû and independent children is the best gift you can give yourself. FAQ’S
How long do colicky babies cry for? Colicky babies usually cry for three or more hours. It usually starts late afternoon or early evening. The crying typically starts around the same time every day. How do you stop a colic baby from crying? While there are no treatments, swaddling your Ðâ̯âûȣ ÍÐďÐâÍ ûÏÃá ¯ ð¯»ÐĶ Ãó to suck on, placing them in a swing or going for a walk or car ride, positioning them on their side or stomach and playing soft music or white noise radio from radio or TV static, a running hair dryer or vacuum and shushing sounds can help.
health
COLIC AND CRYING BABIES Crying is a baby’s natural way to communicate their needs to their caregivers. Most of the time, once the baby’s needs are met, the crying stops. But for colicky babies, getting them to stop crying can be almost impossible. So what causes colic in babies? Colic in infants is a behavioural condition where an otherwise healthy baby cries uncontrollably for no apparent reason. When an infant is colicky, their cries sound louder than normal, are high pitched and sound more like screams. It is a harmless condition that occurs Ðâ ¯ððóæđÐá¯ûÃÜĒ æâà Ðâ ÃďÃóĒ Ķ ďà infants and is more common in infants whose mother smoked during pregnancy. cityparent.com
Although there have been different studies on how do babies get colic, the truth is that no one knows what causes it. Many underlying factors have been explored including food allergies, imbalance of healthy bacteria in the digestive tract, digestive tract that is not fully developed, over or under feeding, gas build up, early childhood migraines and stress or anxiety. However, none of these hypotheses have been proven. Doctors diagnose colic using the ‘rules of three’: an infant cries for at least three hours for three or more days per week for three or more consecutive weeks. Colic does not cause short or long-term complications, however if your infant is crying excessively, they should be seen by a doctor for a
diagnosis and to rule out other possible illnesses or conditions. When do babies become colic? Colic can start when an infant is two weeks old and usually peaks between four to six weeks of age. Although it may feel like it will never end leaving many parents to wonder ‘do babies outgrow colic?’ it does eventually subside. Most babies outgrow colic by three to four months of age.
Can breastmilk cause colic? Research has shown breast milk does not cause colic. Can overfeeding a baby cause colic? Research has also shown that overfeeding a baby does not cause colic. However, if a baby is colicky, overfeeding them can cause further discomfort to the infant and intensify their cries.
How to deal with a colic baby Dealing with a colic in infants can be emotionally draining for parents so it is important to take care of yourself as well. Finding ways that work to soothe your baby and getting help are important when dealing with a colicky baby. August 2021 | CITY PARENT

SEPARATION ANXIETY DOGS WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM Let’s face it—dogs have been living their best lives during the pandemic. They’ve gone on long walks, chased birds in the park, played with the kids in the backyard, cuddled and, quite frankly, been the centre of attention. With September rounding the corner, you should prepare your dog for your back-to-work and your kids’ back-to-school routines. Afterall, your faithful friend may rule the household—for better or for worse. And just like we start weaning our kids towards a backto-school schedule, dogs also need to be trained for what lies ahead—all that attention is about to change. What’s in store? “Separation anxiety and even isolation distress are common,” says Caryn Liles, »ÃóûÐĶ ÿ ¿æÍ ûó¯ÐâÃóȣ ºÃϯďÐæýó coach and owner of The Centre for Canine Education Inc. in Toronto. “It’s generally exhibited in dogs who are either left alone or separated from their primary caregiver.” The typical signs are panting, pacing, yawning, and licking their lips, and it can escalate to vocalization—whining, howling and barking. But it can also become a bit more severe; for instance, a loss of control of the bladder or bowels, destruction of the home,

property, belongings and even selfharm. “Dogs might lick their paws excessively, chew or pull their fur out—jumping or scratching at the doors, trying to escape at various exit points—those are the most common signs.” Liles says there are a few things you can do, but it’s important to start integrating changes now. “While routine is great in some ways, the dog becomes reliant on that predictability. Instead of feeding the dog at 6 p.m., try 6:05 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. Move it around just a little bit, so the dog is stepping outside that comfort zone.” Liles likes to desensitize dogs gradually of habits and routines. “Getting the dog comfortable with absences including all those pre-departure cues that tell the dog you’re leaving, like getting your shoes, coat, hat, keys, or turning the lights off, etc. Instead, you Đ¯âû ûæ Ķ â¿ ûÏÃÐó ûÏóÃöÏæÜ¿Ȩ Hæ
DOGS MIGHT LICK THEIR PAWS EXCESSIVELY, CHEW OR PULL THEIR FUR OUT ɐ ,N3B#4 8E SCRATCHING AT THE DOORS, TRYING TO ESCAPE AT VARIOUS EXIT POINTS only leave for as long as the dog can handle. If they experience a panic attack—the learning ends. So, we have to do it in a very systematic way.” When should you reach out for professional help?
The sooner, the better, and keep in mind, sometimes what the dog is exhibiting isn’t a sign of separation disorder but possibly a learned behaviour. Liles recommends reaching out ûæ ¯ »ÃóûÐĶ ÿ öÃð¯ó¯ûÐæâ ¯âđÐÃûĒ trainer (CSAT) who has the designated CSAT credentials. “Unfortunately, it’s an unregulated industry, so there are a lot of people calling themselves a trainer.” Liles recommends doing your homework, get referrals, and video record your dog when you’re away so you can monitor its behaviour. You might be surprised what is happening when you’re away. “Remember to go at your dog’s pace and get help sooner than you think you need it – don’t leave it unchecked.” æó ¯ »ÃóûÐĶ ÿ ûó¯ÐâÃóȢ malenademartini.com/about/whyhire-csat-trainer/
