up front THE IMPORTANCE OF AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Are your kids coming home after school and spending their afternoons glued to screens, scrolling mindlessly through social media, or playing video games? Introducing them to the wonderful world of after-school activities is essential! These extracurricular recreations keep children engaged and entertained and provide an abundance of benefits that can positively impact their overall development. From arts and sports to dance and fun-filled adventures, there is an activity for every child’s interest and passion. So, let’s dive into why after-school activities are so important and how they can make a significant difference in your child’s life!

After-school activities are structured and supervised activities that occur outside of regular school hours. They offer children a chance to engage in various interests and hobbies while providing a safe and supportive environment for them to learn and grow.

These activities can encompass a wide range of options, catering to different areas of interest. From arts and crafts clubs to sports teams, dance classes to music lessons, there is something for everyone! These activities often have specific goals or objectives that aim to enhance skills or knowledge in the chosen area.

One significant aspect of after-school activities is that they provide an opportunity for children to explore their passions beyond academic subjects. They allow kids to tap into their creativity, develop new talents, build confidence, and foster social connections with likeminded peers.

Participating in after-school activities also helps children learn important life skills such as time management, teamwork, discipline, goal-setting, and problem-solving. Being part of a team or group activity outside the classroom environment encourages personal growth in physically and mentally challenging individuals.

Additionally, these extracurricular pursuits serve as outlets for stress relief. Engaging in fun-filled adventures like hiking trips or art workshops can help alleviate the pressures of academics while promoting overall wellbeing.

Overall, after-school activities play a vital role in shaping well-rounded individuals by offering opportunities for exploration, personal growth, and skill development. So why not allow your child to discover their passion and unleash their potential through after-school involvement? The benefits are endless!

THREE REASONS WHY INVESTING IN EDUCATION WILL BREAK BARRIERS FOR GIRLS

September marks back-to-school season when Canadian families and children prepare for the school year ahead. It’s a hopeful time, because education, inside and outside of the classroom, is the most empowering tool available to young learners so they can change their world. However, access to education isn’t always equal. As we invest in our children’s futures here in Canada, it’s worth considering how investing in education at the global level, particularly providing access to girls, can create a better and brighter future for everyone.

Here are three reasons why:

Girls can add $30 trillion to the global economy

If every girl worldwide received 12 years of quality education, it’s estimated these educated women could contribute up to $30 trillion to the global economy and add half

a per cent to every country’s per capita gross national product.

When educated women work, they invest 90 per cent of their income back into their children’s health, education, and communities, compared to 35 per cent for men; proving that girls’ education is not another problem to be solved, but rather the solution.

Girls can protect the planet

According to research in the book Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming, educating girls was ranked at number six in the top 10 solutions list on effectively addressing climate change, while electric vehicles were ranked much lower at 26!

By empowering girls, fostering climate leadership, and developing green skills for green jobs, the transition to a green economy and

adapting to the impact of climate change can become a reality.

Girls can end child marriage and save lives when empowered Educated girls who are actively in the classroom are three times less likely to marry before the age of 18 compared to girls with no education.

Educated girls are also better prepared for motherhood with 50 per cent of children born to literate mothers surviving past the age of five. They are also better protected against human trafficking and can financially contribute to their household.

“With the global pandemic, war, wildfires and floods, Canadians can be forgiven for feeling a lack of hope and for thinking that their international giving won’t achieve much at all,” said Children Believe CEO, Fred Witteveen. “However, there is a solution to some of the toughest issues affecting the world today –educating girls. While climate change,

child marriage and conflict can seem overwhelming, by supporting Children Believe’s Believe in Girls Like Me Education Fund with $10 dollars a month, Canadians can directly contribute to a better world for us all.”

About Children Believe

Canadian charity, Children Believe, supports access to education in six countries worldwide. Its Believe in Girls Like Me Education Fund combines donations from supporters across Canada to provide equal access to quality education for children to thrive in school and life. Education is not only a human right but also a direct driver of development in boosting the global economy as it promotes employment, earnings, health, and poverty reduction. Consider investing in global education and supporting girls this school year to empower young learners to reach for the stars. To find out more, visit childrenbelieve.ca.

chaos vs calm

GETTING BACK INTO ROUTINE WITH MEAL PLANNING

The transition from summer vacation to back to school doesn’t have to be difficult, especially when everyone is excited to bounce back into a more normal school year. With all the chaos of getting back into the things we love, like birthday parties, hockey practice and swimming lessons, meal planning is a great tool to keep organized.

Getting ahead of your family’s meals will make it easier to grocery shop and answer that nagging question of “what’s for dinner?” while getting your kids out the door, faster. Here are a few helpful tips to get you back into routine.

Make plans with your kids. According to Canada’s Food Guide,

there are many health benefits to getting kids involved in the meal preparation and cooking process, including giving them increased confidence and self-esteem and improved reading and math skills. This comes thanks to reading recipes and measuring ingredients, and the development of a greater understanding of what foods are good for overall health.

If you have some picky eaters in the family, involving your kids in meal planning can even make them more likely to eat and enjoy their foods. So, involve your little ones in the process by asking them to help decide which favourite recipes and snacks to

prepare for the week before you go to the store.

Prep/simplify your ingredients ahead of time. Aim to prepare or cook your meals on Sundays (for Monday to Wednesday meals) and Wednesdays (for Thursday to Sunday meals). If you don’t have time to cook, consider pre-chopping vegetables and fruits or preparing your meats with seasoning ahead of time and placing them in the freezer for later use. This will help reduce prep time during the week and save you time when packing lunches.

Think beyond the sandwich. Shake up your typical sandwich and try a bento box instead. These lunch

kits are such a great way for the kids to have fun and get creative with mixing up their food options. Having the different sections in the lunch kits will also help ensure that you include food from all food groups, providing the essential vitamins and minerals needed for energy, growth, and development. Consider trying a themed bento box, like an Asian noodles-inspired box and start with rice noodles and seaweed.

Autumn is fast approaching, but there is still plenty of time to visit Santa’s Village in Bracebridge.

If you haven’t been to this merry theme park in a while you’re missing out. Under new ownership, the park continues to evolve with a Santa sack full of new attractions over the past few years to brighten your day.

Changes are apparent as soon as you arrive. Gone is the dated entrance. Now, guests are greeted in cheerful style. The old giftshop, located just inside the gate, has been completely remodelled as well. It’s airy and bright, with plenty of room to gather round as Mrs. Claus reads a story.

As soon as children race into the park they’ll see Santa’s Carousel, sheltered within a large timber frame gazebo with a copper cupola (a stunning piece of craftsmanshipbuilt entirety by local artisans). After its introduction, Santa’s Carousel immediately became one of the park’s most popular attractions.

The park’s most iconic attraction, the Candy Cane Express, has been brought into the 21st century. The original train dated to the 1950s. It was aging, had minimal capacity, and its miniature dimensions meant it was

difficult for parents and grandparents to access. Now, a larger but just as charming train clatters through the park, cheerfully tooting its horn.

Like the Candy Cane Express, the petting farm has been a feature of Santa’s Village from its earliest days. It’s still there, but now with a welcomed jolt of energy thanks to the addition of Santa’s Farmyard Tractor Tour. Children take the wheel of a tractor and drive along a 270m track weaving among farm animals and whimsical displays.

Also new is Blitzen’s Balloons –balloons ride up a central tower to a height of 28-feet and spin around

to the glee of children – and the pint-sized roller-coaster Peppermint Penguin Coaster. With these additions, Santa’s Village boasts a dozen rides – more than enough for a holly-jolly day of fun.

But innovation doesn’t end here. Other new additions include Ralphie’s Rifle Range, named, of course, for the main character in the holiday classic The Christmas Story, and Snowbo and Arrows, a child-safe archery range. Take a hike through the Enchanted Forest, a hiking trail that boasts a 200-footlong suspension bridge. Also new is Elf School, where a teacher educates

kids on the finer points of being one of Santa’s little helpers and guides them in making a toy of their own. Everyone gets an elf hat – complete with ears – and a booklet that sends them on a scavenger hunt throughout the park.

Finally, there are now a range of new dining venues to choose from, including Riverside Rotisserie, Yule Lodge (light summer fare like deli sandwiches, fresh salads, and pizza), and the Jolly Trolley Café with quick snacks to go.

September is here. ‘Tis the season for fun at Santa’s Village.

POTENTIAL STRESSORS FOR KIDS

Work is often cited as the primary cause of stress. Indeed, work-related stress is a global issue. According to the Global Organization for Stress, workers in countries as different as the United States, Australia, Canada, and China all report confronting considerable work-related stress. But framing stress as an issue primarily affecting workers overlooks how it affects kids.

The Global Organization for Stress reports that stress is the number one health concern for high school students. Kids dealing with stress experience many of the same symptoms as adults, which the Mayo Clinic reports include headaches, chest pain, anxiety, and mood swings, among others. But stress triggers differ for kids and adults, and parents concerned about stress affecting their children can learn about potential stressors so they can be better prepared to help children get through stressful experiences.

The Boys and Girls Club of America notes that stressors change as children grow up. Parents can keep

that in mind but also recognize that certain events can contribute to stress regardless of how old a child is.

General stressors

The BGCA notes that kids of all ages may be stressed by incidents or experiences that can affect kids whether they’re in elementary school or approaching high school graduation. Such stressors include:

• Conflicts with friends

• Bullying

• Peer pressure

• Academic struggles, including poor performance and difficulties with the curriculum

• Problems socializing

• Disappointing parents

• Parents’ divorce or separation

• Family financial struggles

• Unsafe or precarious living situation

Stressors for children

New experiences are among the stressors that affect children. Such experiences can include being away from home and performing in front of others, whether it’s in a sport, school

play or other public forum. Children also may feel stress if or when they are picked last for a sports team. Perceived dangers, even when there’s no imminent threat, also can be stressors for young children. Such dangers may include kidnapping, fires, and natural disasters, among others.

Stress for preteens and teens

The bodily changes associated with puberty are among the potential stressors for kids in this age group. The changes children undergo at this stage in life also can lead to issues with self-esteem and other negative thoughts, and that can be a stressor for some kids. The specter of college and the uncertainty that life after high school can spark are another potential stressor for kids in this age group. Older kids who begin dating also may find that this causes stress. Stress is often caused by work, but adults are not the only ones vulnerable to stress. Various life events can trigger stress in kids. Parents can do their best to recognize potential stressors and help kids manage stress in a healthy, safe way.

As many parents prepare to send their children back to school, it’s important to remember that bullying extends beyond the classroom. In the ever-expanding digital world we live and work in, cyberbullying has become the modern-day equivalent of a schoolyard bully.

Starting a new school year means new friends, and our children’s online interactions on various platforms, like Facebook, TikTok and online gaming, are commonly used to communicate, learn and socialize; they can also bring an unsuspecting intruder to your child’s world.

It’s essential to stay informed about cyberbullying and be vigilant in protecting your child.

That’s why Toronto’s Jenna Greenspoon is a strong advocate of Kidas ProtectMe and joined the company as Head of Parenting. “It uses AI and machine learning to monitor voice and text chats in more than 200 of the most popular PC games. The best part is it runs silently in the background, so it doesn’t interrupt their gaming. Still, it alerts parents with real-time SMS text messages of the most concerning and dangerous threats, including privacy violations.”

“Cyberbullying takes on various forms,” points out Greenspoon. “Harassment is a popular type that involves repeatedly sending hurtful messages or comments to a person. Spreading rumours or lies is another form. Cyberstalking is also prevalent, especially in online gaming, where an individual repeatedly sends threatening messages or tries to intimidate someone.”

According to Media Smarts, Canada’s Centre for Digital Literacy,

one reason cyberbullying may be more harmful than bullying in person is the invisible nature of cyberbullying, leaving the child uncertain about whom they can trust. Unfortunately, this leaves the child without a safety net, not knowing who they can turn to and imagining that the consequences of telling someone may be worse than the bullying.

What can parents do?

“I can’t stress enough how important communication with your child is,” says Greenspoon. “Whether it’s a bullying situation with friends over text, sexting through social media or getting hacked in a video game, at some point, your child will need your support, which they can only get if they feel comfortable speaking to you about it – openly.”

However, when it comes to online safety, parents need to set rules and boundaries for their children’s online

FEATURE 22 CITY PARENT | September 2023 cityparent.com

activity, including limits on screen time and communication with others. In addition, Greenspoon suggests implementing online safety measures, such as installing protective software like ProtectMe.

“This software provides reports and alerts from ProtectMe and will give parents the information needed about any threats their child comes into contact with and suggestions on how to speak to your child about it.”

REAL-LIFE EXAMPLES OF PROTECTME DETECTING POTENTIAL THREATS.

Ron Kerbs, CEO of Kidas, highlights several concerning alerts that have been reported in the United States. These include instances where individuals have threatened to bring a weapon to school, claimed to have weapons in their homes, or have been approached by a sexual predator. In Canada, Kidas ProtectMe has tracked a number of recent alerts as well.

(RED) Privacy Violation – Your child was involved in a conversation where they shared that they are planning to receive the address of another person and meet them in person.

(ORANGE) Flaming – Your child insulted another player in a game.

(YELLOW ) Flaming – In the past week, your child played a game where aggressive comments were made by both your child and other gamers.

(YELLOW) Sexual Content – Your child spoke inappropriately to another gamer.

What are the signs they need to look for?

Cyberbullying can be hard to detect, especially when the child doesn’t tell anyone. Here are some signs to look for if you suspect your child is being cyberbullied:

• Sudden disinterest in socializing, withdrawing from close friends and/ or family members.

• Difficulty sleeping or a change in eating habits.

• Reluctance to discuss anything occurring in their online life.

What should parents do?

As each situation is different, it’s important to keep documentation of the communication and record where the cyberbullying appeared. In some cases, cyberbullying can be reported to the authorities as harassment, threats, intimidation, and other forms of cyberbullying can result in criminal charges. And as the lines of communication are essential to obtain that much-needed trust between you and your children, Greenspoon reminds parents to speak with their children about how you’re handling the situation. “You want to ensure that you don’t make the situation worse for them,” says Greenspoon.

Knowing the signs of cyberbullying and how to intervene can go a long way in protecting your child’s emotional and mental well-being. Greenspoon’s advice: take the time to educate yourself and stay up-to-date with online safety measures to ensure your child’s online experience this school year is a positive one.

SEPTEMBER SPECIAL FOCUS

WHERE DISCOVERY IGNITES LEARNING Bishop Strachan School

The Bishop Strachan School is a leading independent JK - Grade 12 day and boarding school for girls. For more than 150 years, we have inspired our students to be fearless and educated them to be leaders. Our rigorous curriculum embraces an equity mindset and prepares students for university and beyond. Our approach teaches students to learn deeply and build the skills to make positive change. They are encouraged to find their voice, to work collaboratively, and learn to lead. BSS students grow into compassionate and ethical citizens. Learning at BSS is inquiry-based. We see young students as individuals who are inherently capable and curious, with a powerful potential to learn. With an equity mindset, students approach learning critically. They gain the ability to recognize and respond to bias wherever they encounter it. They learn to take action to create equitable environments inside and outside of the classroom.

In the Junior School (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6), inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach, students engage in investigations and projects that build a strong academic foundation in mathematics, literacy, and research.

In the Middle years (Grades 7 and 8), students hone these core academic skills. They learn to think critically, ask good questions, and solve challenging problems. They tackle collaborative projects that combine subject areas.

In the Senior School (Grades 9 to 12), students continue to learn about themselves and their capabilities through rigorous, challenging learning experiences. In Grades 11 and 12, students can take Advanced Placement (AP) courses in nine

subject areas. They are well-prepared for university with strong critical thinking, analytical and research skills.

These innovative learning experiences happen in the context of an inclusive girls school. Girls are leaders in every aspect of school life. As a result, they are more likely to take risks, speak their minds and develop a strong sense of self. They grow in confidence and resilience.

Our 7.5-acre campus includes STEAM-focused learning spaces;

arts, design technology, multimedia and film labs; and a new turf field -- the first in Ontario at a girls’ school. With an emphasis on spaces that foster connectedness, belonging and accessibility, BSS is a unique intersection of old and new -- from the stained glass and leaded windows of our 108-yearold building, to the open-concept classrooms designed to spark curiosity and collaboration in our STEAM wing.

As an inclusive girls’ school, we foster a sense of belonging by affirming our diverse community. We integrate diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging into learning both inside and outside the classroom, through connections to our inquirybased curriculum, student-led initiatives and co-curriculars. And with more than $2 million available in financial assistance, we ensure that more students discover themselves at BSS.

LEARNERS TODAY, LEADERS TOMORROW Northmount School

Northmount School is a Catholic independent boys preparatory school (JK – 8). Its supportive environment helps boys achieve their greatest potential, emphasizing academic excellence, character development, values and service, which lead to a meaningful, balanced and fulfilling life.

Northmount School provides a sound, stimulating and coherent education to prepare boys in their development as responsible citizens. The school helps each student to reach his full potential, develop critical thinking skills, self-discipline, a respect for others, and a strong moral character. We recognize that the parents are the boys’ first teachers and thus we enter into a partnership

between parents, students and the school to establish a rich and vibrant community life.

We deeply respect and are guided by our tradition, its spirituality, appeal to the common good, and its values. We are multi-cultural and our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Our Catholic roots encourage a belief in the dignity of every person and a respect for a variety of faith traditions.

Our boys learn to support one another in a nurturing environment; one that is made possible by our superior and highly committed staff who are dedicated to implementing Northmount’s goals. The world’s next generation will need leadership from responsible individuals who

are morally sound and whose values speak to the Truth. For boys who aspire to have character when men, the journey begins at Northmount.

Our school community finds its foundations in the teaching of the Catholic Church. Families of all faiths, however, are welcome, as we see our school as a microcosm of society. We teach from a Catholic perspective and this informs how we teach, understand right from wrong, and guide our boys to manhood.

The family plays an important role in Northmount’s vision for education. As the primary educators in their children’s lives, parents are active in the academic, co-curricular and faith development of their boys and in

helping them to develop character. The school seeks out opportunities to engage with the family to round out the experiences in a young boy’s life.

Our academic program is one of which our school community is extremely proud, and our dedicated teachers ascribe to pedagogy that focuses on the needs of boys using contemporary tools. As a single-sex school and with significant research to back this focus, Northmount ensures that boys develop the necessary academic skills to find success in high school and beyond.

We would love to have the opportunity to host your family for a visit. Please book a tour and find out more about how Northmount could be the right school for your son.

EDUCATION THAT BECOMES A TOOL FOR LIFE Fieldstone School

From the founding of Fieldstone, our determination was to build a school in which expectations of students would be higher than at other schools. Research leading up to the opening of Fieldstone, brought to light the work of E.D. Hirsch, an American educator and proponent of Cultural Literacy, an educational approach that emphasized the acquisition of key worldly knowledge that would ensure that students could participate in the broader conversations of their culture. Fieldstone took Hirsch’s curriculum, Core Knowledge, added French and otherwise Canadianized the topics, and established Global Knowledge. We believed that beyond the educational advantages of Global Knowledge, our students’ self-esteem would be positively affected through the mastering of difficult academic challenges within a caring and supportive environment. It was the

twin founding principles of Global Knowledge and the creation of a warm and nurturing environment that led to Fieldstone making its early mark within the Toronto private educational landscape.

After more than a decade as a top private school in Toronto, Fieldstone had firmly established itself as a leader in both elementary and secondary education. Its lower school continued to thrive

within its twin philosophy of Global Knowledge and a caring, nurturing environment. The upper school became known as a top universitypreparation institution, sending its graduates to the top universities in Canada and abroad. In 2009, in its ongoing pursuit of a dynamic and global-focused curriculum, the school began a relationship with Cambridge International Examinations, through which it

offered Cambridge courses from Grade Six through Twelve. As part of this adoption of the Cambridge curriculum, the upper school was renamed Fieldstone King’s College School. The move to the Cambridge curriculum was a huge success, and in 2015, Fieldstone adopted this curriculum from kindergarten right through to Grade Twelve.

Celebrating 26 years of education excellence in 2023, the success stories of our alumni feature some of the top 100 world-ranking universities, such as Harvard, Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins, University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, The Paris Institute of Political Studies, University of Hong Kong, University of Melbourne, University of British Columbia, McGill University, University of Manchester, University of Warwick, and University of Bristol, to name a few.

As a lead-learning organization, Havergal College provides students with the tools to adapt and thrive, no matter what the future brings. In alignment with its mission to prepare young women to make a difference, the school is focused on ensuring students can solve problems and meet the demands of a rapidly changing world. To help meet this goal, HC-X—Havergal’s innovation hub—designs learning experiences for students and faculty to develop the skills and mindsets for the future of work and lifelong learning.

Guided by research from within and beyond the educational sector, HC-X offers opportunities for students to engage with social entrepreneurs, global community leaders and innovative programming and workshops. These unique experiences allow students to hone their skills in the safety of the

Havergal College

classroom. One example is the Digital Wisdom course, which is entering its fourth year. The program engages students from Grades 5 to 8 in examining and critically thinking about their identity and relationships in a digital world. Combining elements of technology skills and online safety, the course is focused on fostering the tools and strategies students need to navigate obstacles they might experience in their digital lives.

Most recently, HC-X launched a Digital Micro-Credentials program to help students further build their skills. This distinctive program empowers students in Grades 9 to 12 to pursue learning pathways in areas outside of traditional offerings. Partnering with alumni, parents, Harvard Student Agencies and Inspire AI, Havergal is proud to offer 20-hour courses on Contemporary Finance, Pre-Med

studies and Artificial Intelligence. Last year, students were so keen to participate, courses “sold out” during the first term. Given the overwhelmingly positive feedback from both students and partners, the school has expanded the program for this upcoming academic year and will include new offerings.

HC-X also leads the development of Havergal’s Blended Learning Model, which prioritizes student agency. In this model, faculty intentionally use digital tools to present developmentally appropriate choices to students in how, when and where they learn. Students make their choices, learn to take responsibility for their learning and reflect deeply on who they are as a learner.

Beyond HC-X programs, the school has a Global Learning and Leading Diploma (GLLD) to help prepare students for the future.

Exclusive to Havergal, this optional diploma is available for Grade 10 to 12 students to engage in social innovation, social justice and global impact and serves as a differentiator when applying to external institutions (e.g. post-secondary, employers, etc.). The GLLD increases students’ global knowledge, skills and mindsets while helping them develop an understanding of impactful leadership.
