BACK TO SCHOOL

Another suggestion is a trip to the school before the fi rst day. Take a walk, peek in the windows, and have fun while introducing your child to pre-school or kindergarten – a great place to answer any questions your child may have. Be encouraging and show excitement. Finally, when you say goodbye, a brief statement of reassurance is most effective. This should be done while maintaining your composure with a positive and relaxed facial expression.

It’s September and that marks the back-to-school season. For some, it’s the fi rst of the fi rst and it can be overwhelming for both child and parent. New routines, new people, new friends, and possibly a new school. An adjustment period may be required for schoolaged children who are sensitive, easily worried, or have cognitive delays. We leave our children in unfamiliar environments with strangers when they start school or a new activity outside the home. However, most would rather be with familiar guardians or parents than be left outside their comfort zone, a place they’ve always known.Itisalso common for parents or guardians to feel the same sense of anxiety, fear and doubt. Especially when they sense and see fear in their child. It isn’t easy to walk away with tears in your child’s eyes. We can do a few things to help make the transition more bearable for both parties.Thefi rst step is to talk to your child/toddler. Let’s face it. This is a phase most of us will experience at some point. Fear comes from “ the unknown”. Ask your child how they feel about starting school. Show empathy if they share they feel scared. Ask them what it is they are afraid of. Let them know what to expect once they arrive at their destination. Work with your child by helping them fi gure out methods for coping. Ensure them that everything will work out fi ne. Let them know that many kids and parents experience these feelings, that they don’t last long and will go away as soon as we realize there is nothing to fear.

Finally, tradition.anew picture book based on the classic counting song made famous by this beloved trio of children’s entertainers (and featured theme on The Elephant Show) hits bookstores this month. The book, One Elephant Went Out to Play, is co-written by Sharon Hampson’s daughter Randi Hampson. She joined her mother’s performances after Lois Lilienstein died, and following a final tour with Sharon and Bram before Bram Morrison retired from touring. This time, Sharon, Lois & Bram, invites readers to join them in a musical story about a magical spider web. A diverse cast of kids in whimsical costumes join in the fun on the spider web – including a glamorous giraffe, a cranky crocodile, a silly snake, and five monkeys. After the 10th animal is invited onto the web, EVERYONE is invited to the party – but is the spider’s web strong enough? “ONE elephant went out to play upon a spider’s web one day. She had such enormous fun that she called for her baby elephant to come.”

WORDS

“Skinnamarinky dinky dink Skinnamarinky do I love you.” Made you hum, right? Well, you’re not alone. This classic song, made famous by Sharon, Lois & Bram, was sung, acted out and became an anthem of sorts for generations of kids, parents, and grandparents. And those kids are now themselves parents and continue the tradition, with their children singing along and reading the award-winning picture book, Skinnamarink as a treasured family

The jungle animals come alive in this magically illustrated book by award-winning designer and illustrator Qin Leng. This catchy new version, released by Red Brick Songs, takes the reader on a musical journey to accompany and sing along with the book. Recorded by Sharon, Bram & Randi and produced by Randi Hampson and Glenn Morley, this new version captures the energy and joy of childhood as the children and animals play, sing, and dance together on a giant spider web! New Liskeard sits on the southern edge of the Little Claybelt, a geographic anomaly of rich soil amidst the otherwise rocky Canadian Shield. Despite suitable soil, it wasn’t always easy for settlers. The hardships they faced, and their triumphs in growing a frontier village into a modern town, is told beautifully at the Little Claybelt Homesteaders Museum (claybeltmuseum.ca). Make sure to pose with Ms. Claybelt, the towering cow that’s iconic to New Liskeard. Neighbouring Haileybury was shaped by nature in a very different way. In 1922, the young community was wiped off the map by the Great Fire, which razed 650 square miles, killed 43 and left thousands homeless. Haileybury rebuilt into the community it is today, a lakeside town with style. The waterfront is spectacular, with walking trails, a playground, in-season waterpark, and great views. Watch for a monument depicting people seeking shelter from the flames in the lake.

The vacationing throngs are gone, nights begin to subtly cool, and there is the first hint of colour in the leaves. Fall is just around the corner. But there’s still life left in summer yet, just enough time for a road trip to Temiskaming Shores. Stretching along the eastern side of the lake for which it is named, the City of Temiskaming Shores (comprising the former towns of New Liskeard and Haileybury, and the Township of Dymond) has been defined by nature.

Photo op The region’s natural splendor is on display at Pete’s Dam, where a short all-ages trail culminates in a waterfall.

“Today’s challenges in raising a child to grow strong in body, mind and spirit are dizzyingly complex,” says Maples.

Eliminate all sugary beverages: Purge them, including fruit juice, sports drinks, sweetened water, sweet tea, soda and energy drinks.

“I WROTE THIS BOOK TO EVIDENCE-BASEDTHESEBRAVEWANNABEHELPPARENTSSORTOUTCRITICALISSUESWITHSOLUTIONS.”FEATURE16 CITY PARENT | September 2022 cityparent.com

WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM

“I wrote this book to help wannabe Brave Parents sort out these critical issues with evidence-based solutions. I wanted to help them build actionable plans to raise healthy, happy kids.”

To start your journey, Maples suggests these five tips: The one-finger rule with packaged goods: If your child can’t cover the ingredient list with one finger (usually meaning there are more than five ingredients), ditch it. Those additives that make this “food” are not really food at all.

Dr. Susan Maples is a health educator and practicing dentist for 37 years. Her total health dental practice focuses on mouth-body connections and strives to help patients prevent many of the most common lifediminishing conditions affecting people today. Her latest book, Brave Parent Raising Healthy, Happy Kids (against all odds) in Today’s World, is a must-read for any parent hoping to help their children build habits for a healthier future. By focusing on prevention, Brave Parents have an opportunity to prevent many diseases from becoming life-long struggles for their Maples, “We are amidst a tragic downward trajectory in health– and not from communicable diseases (such as COVID) but from non-communicable, preventable diseases. In fact, most children are afflicted with a number of lifestylerelated conditions such as obesity, insulin resistance, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, rampant tooth decay, depression, anxiety disorders and addiction to everything from caffeine and sugar to heroin.”

Better sleep hygiene: Design some pre-bedroom-time routines that help your children wind down. Establish a screentime curfew. Keep your child’s room as dark as possible and the room cooler at night. Never neglect emotional, social and cognitive health: Teach your kids how to reduce stress and worry. Help them recognize the signs of depression and teach them the importance of self-care. And continue to love them, no matter what. Foster a daily dose of get-up-N-go: According to the most recent statistics from Public Health, 30 per cent of Canadian children aged 5-17 are overweight or obese. And there is no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic may have contributed to an increase in this percentage.

Back-to-school means back to packing lunches. As more schools are encouraging ‘litter less’ lunches, it can be hard to come up with ways to make your child’s lunch more sustainable and waste free. Here are three tips to make it easier: Portion to reduce packaging Buy food you’ll use in your child’s lunch, like yogurt or applesauce, in larger quantities. Purchase a big tub that you can portion into reusable containers, rather than individually packaged cups, to avoid wasteful packaging.Putre-useable or wooden cutlery and a cloth napkin into your child’s lunch box to reduce what’s thrown away. A napkin is also something you can personalize so kids can stand out from their friends. Consider where your food is coming from Grow your own salad, herbs, or vegetables where possible. This saves on packaging and transportation-related emissions, which helps reduce your carbon footprint. It’s also a great activity for engaging the kids. When shopping, look for products from companies that are prioritizing eco-friendly initiatives. You can often identify them by the packaging. Meal plan, ‘up cook’, and make your own snacks Instead of buying individually wrapped snacks at the grocery store, try healthier, more environmentally conscious options. You could also turn this into a Sunday activity with the kids by batch-making homemade granola bars. Not only can this be a fun family activity, but you’ll save countless wrappers from going to a landfill.Meal planning helps to reduce food waste. Are you likely to have leftovers that can be ‘up cooked’ and added to your child’s lunch? Leftover chicken from last night’s dinner can be used on a sandwich, or leftover bacon from breakfast can be a tasty salad topping.

Consider shuttering accounts during the season. In recent years, numerous professional athletes have bravely acknowledged their mental health struggles. For example, NBA All-Star Kevin Love has shared tales of his struggles with anxiety and depression. These issues confound many athletes and can be exacerbated by negative comments on social media, particularly after a loss. Student athletes can avoid the negative aspects of social media by avoiding it during the season. Emphasize the potential effects of athletes’ own comments on social media.

Scholastic sports participation benefits student athletes in myriad ways. Competitive sports teach students how to cope with the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat, while providing firsthand experience that emphasizes the value of working with others in pursuit of a common goal. Student athletes often apply these lessons long after their playing days have ended, benefitting from their experiences in competitive sports throughout their lives.

It’s not just negative thoughts from disgruntled spectators that can make social media a minefield for young athletes. Student athletes’ own negative comments can have some lasting and unfortunate effects as well. A 2017 survey from the American Association of Collegiate Registrars found that 11 percent of respondents indicated they had denied admissions to an applicant based on social media content. Furthermore, an additional 7 percent acknowledged rescinding offers due to social media content. Fair or unfair, these decisions highlight the very real effects that comments made on social media can have on young people’s futures. Sports often generates highly emotional responses, and parents and coaches can urge student athletes to avoid voicing negative or kneejerk reactions about opponents, offi cials or even games they’re not involved in via social media. Such commentary could have unforeseen consequences that adversely affect student athletes for years to come. Highlight how student athletes can use social media to their benefit. Social media can be a minefield, but it also presents opportunities for student athletes to showcase themselves in a positive light. Parents and coaches can emphasize how student athletes can use social media to show good sportsmanship. Win or lose, urge athletes to praise their teammates and opponents after a big game. Positive commentary on social media can be just as beneficial to student athletes as negative commentary can be harmful. Student athletes who showcase their maturity and sportsmanship on social media can improve their standing among college coaches and admissions officers.Student athletes who learn to successfully navigate social media can reap the rewards of those efforts for years to come.

Athletes of all ages can relate to some of the common experiences of competitive sports. At one point or another, all competitive athletes must learn to handle losing. But modern student athletes have a relatively recent phenomenon to contend with that was not around when their parents played sports: social media. Social media can connect people in ways that were previously unimaginable, but it also poses unique challenges to modern student athletes. Parents and coaches can help student athletes navigate social media, so it does not adversely affect their scholastic sports experiences.
