discover fun ways to keep your pet active this fall
Getting outside with your pet in the hot summer for lots of activity isn’t always easy, but fall is the perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors together. Here are some great ideas for you and your furry friends to enjoy this colourful and crisp season:
visit a pumpkin patch
Grab the leash and bring your pup to visit a pumpkin patch or apple orchard. Before you head out, make sure to check that the place is petfriendly. Remember there are often other animals on site, so keep in mind the larger animals may make your pet nervous.
multitask outside
Dogs spend lots of time outdoors, but fall is a great time to bring your cat outside to enjoy the last days of warmer weather. While you’re in the yard prepping the garden for frost, take your cat and their favourite toy outside with you to explore under your supervision.
check out a fall parade
Parades are a great way to get your dog moving and meeting people and dogs in your community. However, keep in mind there will be large crowds and loud noises, so make sure to bring a blanket to mark your territory and ensure your dog has enough space.
take a hike
There’s no better way to enjoy the fall foliage than a walk or hike through a forest. Make sure to check local travel websites to find some great trails in your area that matches both your and your pet’s ability levels.
eat a meal out together
After all this activity, it’s easy to forget to keep your pet hydrated. Enjoy a snack and some refreshments in your garden or balcony. Wet pet food is a tasty way to keep your little critter hydrated. ■

do you really need renters insurance
If your apartment building or rental home doesn’t require you to have proof of renters insurance, you might hum and haw about having to pay an extra monthly fee and decide it’s not necessary. I’m all for avoiding extra monthly payments –
but that renters insurance policy might really help you out should you come across a series of unfortunate events.
Your landlord probably has property insurance on your building, but their policy doesn’t likely protect your personal belongings, any of the
upgrades you’ve made to your unit, or cover you if someone hurts themselves in your home.
It will cover certain things, but disregard others – know what’s what when it comes to your landlord’s insurance versus your own.
4Rent.ca September 1–15, 2023 12 RENTERS
if a fire burns down your building
Property insurance: Generally speaking, your landlord’s property insurance would pay for the demolition of the building (if necessary), as well as cover the expenses required
to repair or rebuild it. This means it would pay to fix the structure itself, as well as any permanant fixtures –lights, built-in cabinetry, etc. Their insurance would not cover your personal belongings.
VS
Renters insurance: In most cases, renters insurance would cover all of the contents in your unit in the case of a fire. Most policies would also cover your expenses if you needed a place to live while your home was out of commission.
if someone gets hurt in your home
Property insurance: Chances are, if you organize a get-together and a partygoer slips on a spill and hurts themself in your home, your landlord’s insurance would not be of any help if that person decided to sue you.
VS
Renters insurance: If you had liability coverage included in your renters insurance, it would protect you financially if you unintentionally caused bodily harm to someone in your home. It would also likely cover you if you accidentally caused damage to the property in which you lived.
if someone breaks in and steals your stuff
Property insurance: As you now know, the landlord’s property insurance doesn’t extend to the contents of your unit, which means that without renters insurance, you’d be on the hook for replacing everything yourself in this situation.
VS
Renters insurance: In most cases, your renters insurance policy covers your possessions and personal property if your apartment gets broken into.
Whether you’re renting a basement apartment in a home, a unit in a mid-rise or one in a massive highrise, insurance is all the same – the property owner insures the structure and property, and the resident insures the contents.
Take a look around your place – how would you feel without everything in your home? Is it all worth paying a small monthly fee to protect?■

working remotely?
how to optimize your
Though social distancing has been in place for months now, perfecting our work-from-home setup continues to be a challenge for many of us. Here are a few surprising ways that you can streamline your rou-
tine using your mobile phone from anywhere:
consider dark mode
Need to give your eyes a break? While blue light blocking glasses can help, another option is to give your
eyes a rest by catching up on email from your phone using dark mode, which will help alleviate strain as you read.
get a stand
Using your smartphone for conference calls can help add flexibility
4Rent.ca September 1–15, 2023 16 THE VIEW
if you’re having to move rooms to accommodate other family members’ schedules. That said, the quickly draining battery and constant holding can be a pain. Look for a phone stand that has a builtin charger so battery life doesn’t
slow you down and you can dial in hands free.
Wi-Fi vs data
With home now acting as everything from the boardroom to the movie theatre, it’s worth assessing
your internet plan to ensure you get good download speeds and a reliable signal. But Wi-Fi is only half the equation. Connect with an unbiased mobile expert like those at The Mobile Shop virtually or in store to make sure your mobile plan is working optimally for you right now. If you have internet issues, you may want to consider an unlimited data mobile plan, so you don’t get dropped from conference calls.
use alarms and reminders
Have you dialed in late to a virtual meeting since working from your home office? Set up reminders and alarms on your phone to add extra security for important meetings and mix in reminders to walk the dog or check in with the kids while you’re at it. Our routine has changed, we can all use an extra nudge or two.
create space
Whether we’re at home or out of the house during the day, many of us need constant access to our mobile devices, so juggling the needs of family members who may need to get connected for at-home learning can be tough. Accessories like noise-cancelling headphones and phone stands can be game-changers if you’re not able to spread out. ■

Molly Maid’s top 12 cleaning tips 4Rent.ca September 1–15, 2023 20 TIPS
simplify your cleaning products
Limit spring cleaning products to a quality window/glass cleaner, allpurpose cleaner, tile/grout cleaner and a toilet bowl cleaner.
the Molly Maid system
Clean each room from the top to bottom starting on the left and moving right. This really is the quickest and most efficient way to thoroughly spring clean your home.
dust first, vacuum second
Any bits of dust or dirt that fall to the floor as you’re dusting will be picked up by the vacuum cleaner. the best dust cloth: a damp, clean microfiber cloth
Hold the cloth by a corner and lightly mist with clean water from a spray bottle. The cloth should be just damp enough to pick up dust without leaving moisture streaks on the furniture surface.
pet hair
Remove it from upholstery with a damp microfibre cloth or rubber glove.
damp mop
First sweep or vacuum floors to collect crumbs and dirt. Then start washing the floor in the farthest corner of the room and work your way towards the door. Use a damp cloth on the end of a mop handle to reach the narrow space between appliances.
microwave spatters
Fill a cup with water and microwave on high for a few minutes. The steam will loosen any baked on food so you can easily wipe it clean. Before wiping the microwave, remember to be extra careful when removing the cup of water as it will be hot.
dish cloths and sponges
These are germ incubators, if you don’t clean them you’re just spreading the bacteria around. Wash dish cloths regularly, and microwave damp sponges on high for several minutes to kill bacteria. Even better, toss the sponge and stick to microfibre cloths, which dry quickly when hung up and help prevent the spread of germs.
the toothbrush
Use a toothbrush for hard to reach areas in the bathroom and kitchen (for example, around the soap holder, taps and drain).
streaks on the balcony door
Streaks are tricky to eliminate. When spring cleaning, wipe the interior side of the glass horizontally and the exterior side vertically. This way, it will be easy to deter-
mine if the streaks are on the inside or outside.
clean your laundry routine
You fill your laundry basket with dirty clothes. You take it to the laundry room and setting it on the floor. Then you repack it with clean clothes an hour later. Give your laundry basket, hamper and detergent/bleach/ softener caddy a good cleanse. Now, add anti-bacterial wipes to your laundry kit so that you can wipe out the inside of the basket before refilling it with clean clothes each time.
de-scale the kettle.
Fill the kettle half-and-half with white vinegar and water and leave it to soak overnight. Using an old toothbrush, dislodge any stubborn bits of lime scale. Rinse out thoroughly a couple of times and then boil some water to eliminate any odour of vinegar.■

create more closet space without major renovations
Closet space is at a premium in many homes and apartments. Many older homes were not built to accommodate large wardrobes, while rental properties are often designed to maximize living space at the expense of storage.
Closets vary depending on the size of the home, but many tend to be a minimum of 24 inches deep so they can store garments without the clothes brushing against the walls. Bedroom and hallway closets can be four feet in length or more. Walk-in closets are the largest options, but such spaces tend to only be available in modern homes or custom-built properties.
It is not always practical or possible to undergo renovations to create more closet space. Apart from moving to a new residence, homeowners or renters must evaluate the space they have and make some more efficient choices in how they utilize available areas.
clear out clutter
The first step to more closet space is to eliminate unused items. Clothing that no longer fits or items that can be stored elsewhere should be removed from the closet. Donate as much as possible. Some organizations will even pick up donations at your convenience.
upgrade hangers and rods
Replace existing hangers with slimmer, more uniform alternatives that more easily fit into your closet. In addition, remove empty hangers, which are likely just taking up space.

In small rooms, homeowners may want to find another way to utilize vertical space. A loft bed, which raises the bed up to a level where it might be on the top bunk of a bunk bed, will free up plenty of storage space beneath the bed. This can be turned into a floor closet.
Consider dual closet rods if space will allow them. Hang the second rod below an area reserved for shorter clothing to achieve a two-tiered design. Grouping short items together also can free up valuable floor space.

Bookends, bins, boxes and drawers can be used to contain items that don’t easily conform to closets. These may be purses, scarves, ties, and more. Don’t overlook the possibilities of hanging items on the wall inside the closet or on the back of closet doors.
When finishing closet makeovers, be sure to install lighting inside the closet so items are more visible. ■

tips for busy parents
Spend more time on the things you love, like quality time with the kids and your favourite hobbies, with these super simple tips for super busy parents.
1. Schedule a weekly planning session. Choose a quieter small block of time to plan key things for the week ahead, like meals, chores and special commitments. Create a shopping list, figure out transportation to playdates and activities, and delegate duties with your partner, other loved ones who can help, and parents whom you trade chauffer and babysitting duties with.
2. Choose commitments wisely. Learn to say no if something asking for your time doesn’t make you happy or actively benefit you or your family in any way.
When it comes to after school activities for the kids, don’t enrol them in everything (involve them in the
decision-making, asking them to pick one or two things a week they really love.
3. Rethink challenging behaviour. Instead of trying to “fix” problem behaviours, teach your kids how to deal with their feelings. “Helping a young child learn to recognize when they’re starting to feel frustrated or overwhelmed and offering strategies for how to cope with those feelings in a healthy and constructive way is the best strategy for addressing what might seem like challenging behaviour,” advises Melanie Dixon, a registered early childhood educator.
4. Banish time wasters. Figuring out where your valuable time is going to waste is the first step to better time management. Do you
spend hours scrolling through social media before going to bed? Limit your screen time for better sleep and productivity. Spend hours cooking every weeknight? Spend one weekend afternoon cooking big batches of meals you can reheat throughout the week.
5. Take some adult time. Everyone needs time to relax and recharge, and parents are no exception. Reach out to your community for support. If you have kids in childcare, talk to the registered early childhood educators who work with them. These educators are trained and qualified professionals who can share information about community resources and provide support and suggestions about play experiences. ■
