While it may seem intimidating, now is likely a good time for your child to apply for their first credit card. Credit cards can help establish a credit rating, which could come in handy later in life. Thanks to online statements that detail spending categories, a card can also be a useful budgeting tool. Cards like the PC Financial Mastercard award points on purchases that can go towards essentials like groceries or household items.

steps to saveon back-to-school
If your child is gearing up for post-secondary, you know that this school year is looking a bit different. Whether your teen is moving onto campus or staying home for online classes, managing their finances is always a top concern. As a parent, you can help by sharing these important tips: create a plan for the year
Having a financial plan in place before classes begin can help keep track of spending habits while staying within a budget. A plan can reduce any unnecessary spending, keep savings in good shape and help prepare for any unexpected costs. save on furnishings
Setting up a home workstation in your house or furnishing a first offcampus home can be a major drain on the pocketbook. Whether your child chooses to buy new or used, research is the best way to save. It’s faster than ever to compare prices online, and they won’t regret the legwork when they’ve got more fun money for the year. save on groceries Food is one of the biggest costs students incur throughout the year, but your child can hit the ground running with a shopping strategy. A few go-to meals will help them build grocery lists faster and having a list can help them save a ton of money at the store. Loyalty programs are a smart addition to any strategy, and you’ll be surprised how fast the points rack up. get a first credit card

Chuck Resnick is vice-president, marketing and operations at Two Men and A Truck – Canada®
The money you think you’ll save by not hiring a professional mover may end up being spent on repairs if these large and valuable pieces are not han dled correctly. Worse yet, irreplace able items may be lost forever. And have you thought through unpacking at the other end? On your first night there, you will need bed ding, toiletries, towels and some kitchen items. Do you have a plan that includes being able to find those things easily and quickly?
Moving your worldly possessions involves a lot of organization, and if there’s one thing professional movers understand, it’s to expect the unexpected. In fact, that’s a major reason why many people choose to hand over the task of moving to companies that do this every day.
achieve moving zen 4Rent.ca September 2–16, 2022 22
BY CHUCK RESNICK
All of these considerations and more are covered in the training that Two Men and A Truck franchisees take part in at what we call Stick Men University in honour of the company logo. Among the many things they learn is how to maneuver, wrap, pack and load items from big-screen televisions to china cabinets filled with breakables. If you do decide to move yourself, on the Two Men and A Truck web site, we provide moving tips, a mov ing checklist and even special things to consider for extremely large items. Give some thought to what might happen along the way and make contingency plans. And be realistic – hiring a professional mover can of fer tremendous peace-of-mind and is money well spent. Visit twomen.ca to find a location near your rental home. ■
Some do-it-yourself moves go well; others end up unneces sarily stressful because those completing the work don’t anticipate potential glitches. Check lists are great, but every single move is different – and nothing beats ex perience for transferring household and other goods quickly, safely and efficiently.Forexample, if you move in the win ter and it’s a snowy, slushy day, how do you protect the floors from water or salt damage at both ends? What about getting large items around hard-tomanoeuvre corners without marking walls? What if someone gets hurt? Do you know how to pack delicate items such as lampshades and glassware to eliminate shifting and potential break age during a long haul? What if the truck breaks down or gets into an ac cident halfway to your new home? Professional movers have re sources to draw upon to anticipate and/or handle any number of un expected happenings. Training is a great preventative measure – when you shop for a mover, find out if and how the drivers and moving people are trained. Ask whether they have a “Plan B” in case of vehicle problems, and what you can do to be as pre pared as possible when the packing/ moving begins. As tempting as a D-I-Y move may be, think through the consequences. Are you prepared to deal with the possibility of friends or family mem bers not showing up on moving day due to illness or hurt themselves try ing to move heavy items? Do you have a backup plan for extra items in case you misjudge the size of mov ing vehicle you need? What about plants? Hazardous liquids? Items such as chain saws and lawnmowers with gas or grease on them? Large items like ladders? Of course, there are specialty items that require an unusual level of care – pianos, pool tables, grandfather clocks, artwork, antiques and the like.

As people look more closely at their financial situations, they’re also becoming more skeptical of unneces sary fees and are looking for ways to minimize or eliminate them. With the recent increase in banking fees from most major banks in 2021, this can be a good place to start. Review your monthly fees and service charges. If you’re getting charged for a place to keep your money, look for no-monthly-fee banking options, like the PC Money Account. This account rewards you for everyday purchases and bill payments, which means you’ll be making money instead of losing it monthly. create emergencyan fund
The last year has taught us that anything can happen. To ensure you’re more financially secure for the unexpected with your job, home or something else, be sure to have an emergency fund.
