moving to university/college residence or new home requires smart Chuck Resnick BY CHUCK RESNICK

organization & planning

F

or many university or community college students, a new school means a new place to live. Moving away from home for the first time can be a stressful change. However, taking a few painless steps can make the transition to the new “home away from home” go more smoothly. Moving children to their university or college of choice for the first time can leave parents and their student children physically and emotionally drained, if unprepared. It’s easy to get frustrated when faced with packing and condensing belongings which will ultimately have to fit in a small room shared by one to three other people. Here are seven tips for parents and students to make the process easier:

don’t over-pack boxes Remember, the heavier the item, the smaller the box. Use original packaging for large electronics when possible – the safest way to transport electronics like a computer, TV, mini-fridge or a microwave is to use the original packaging. If it’s not available, wrap the electronics in anti-static bubble wrap.

try to condense Go through the new student’s belongings before packing. Reduce the amount of items to move to start the school year clutter-free.

use the right supplies Shop around for competitive prices on supplies. Avoid using old shopping bags, laundry baskets or topless boxes to transport belongings. Items can get tossed around during the move and if loose items fall out, people can get hurt. Also, beware of using grocery store boxes – they stored food and may carry bugs.

pack similar items together Label the boxes so they are easily identified. This will help the student prioritize unpacking without making a huge mess.

start early Don’t wait until the last minute to collect boxes and moving supplies. Start packing non-essential items immediately, such as seasonal clothing. Clearly label all boxes so unpacking is easy.

recycle Buying reusable supplies like high-quality containers is good for parents’ wallets and for the environment. Most corrugated cardboard boxes can be easily folded and stored during the school year. Plastic storage bins with lids are also a good option. The containers parents buy this year can be reused and recycled throughout their student’s university career. ■

Home office ideas

to boost your creativity

A

fter so much time at home, it’s no surprise if you’re in need of a creative boost. One of the great things about working from home is that you’re much freer to personalize your workspace. This means you can decorate to boost your mood and motivation. Here are some updates for your virtual home office to help get the juices flowing:

4Rent.ca

September 3–17, 2021

fresh visuals Swap joyful artwork on your desk or walls regularly to keep your environment fresh. Better yet, install a gallery shelf above to house easily changeable prints, family photos and knickknacks that inspire.

pretty plants Bring the outside in with any plant you like. Choose air purifying ones

like snake plants for the full benefits, but even a fake plant is better than nothing since green is said to be a colour that promotes productivity.

point of view Change your perspective and activate your imagination by adding another seating area to your workspace if you can. A comfy chair is a great alternative for when you feel chained to your desk. You can even try stacking

15

books for a makeshift standing desk to achieve new heights for a new outlook.

the right gear Sometimes it’s old tech that’s getting in your way. Whether it’s adding a second monitor like you had at the office or upgrading your old camera to the latest from Sony for enhanced

video calls, livestreams or media projects, new tools can expand your possibilities. Even little things like a mini tripod, a grip for hands-free camera control or studio lighting can also improve your output. Find tips on choosing the best camera gear and accessories at henrys.com ■

4 ways to help prepare your kids for

leaving the nest M

oving away from home can be a stressful time for students as they try to maneuver many of life’s firsts. This major milestone can be equally as difficult for parents not only emotionally, but also as they ready their kids to face the realities of being on their own. Here are a few tips to help parents prepare their child for their first year away.

4Rent.ca

September 3–17, 2021

21

master the basics of banking

teach them a few easy recipes

Most kids are likely familiar with their debit card and ATMs, but for some it may be the first time they use a credit card or have to manage their expenses. Sit down and create a budget together so they understand the basics of money management and where to go if they have any questions.

Although they may have a school meal plan, it’s always nice to be able to make a few healthy, home-cooked dishes. They can even prepare frozen meals in advance that can easily be heated up during busy study times.

help them learn laundry 101 In the months leading up to the big move, have them do their own laundry and make sure they’re comfortable using laundry machines. Cover things like how to properly sort colours from whites, how to choose the right water temperature and wash

THE VIEW

cycle and to always check clothing labels for washing instructions. That way when they show up on campus with their roll of loonies, they’ll be laundry pros.

treat their last summer at home like a test run Pretend your child has already gone away to school and have them live at home as if they were living in their own apartment. This means doing everything from paying rent and creating a budget, to household chores and grocery shopping. At the end of the summer return the “rent” they paid, which actually turns out to be a helpful saving trick. ■ — News Canada

5 tips to get your family into a

new routine A

djusting to a new routine can be difficult, especially for children and pets. Whether it’s going back to school or starting a new job, change can cause anxiety and stress. However, with proper planning you can ease everyone in gradually instead of all at once. 1. Build a schedule as soon as you anticipate a change, so you can ease your family into a routine. Discuss the timetable and agree on a date to begin implementing changes slowly. 2. Your new schedule can only succeed if everyone is cooperative

and does what they are tasked to do. Set goals for family members that are realistic and attach a timeline, so everyone knows when they are to be met. This will ensure everyone is held accountable for their promises and the success of this transition. Set up family meetings to celebrate milestones and to keep everyone motivated. 3. Set phone reminders, place post-it notes in main family areas, or use the end of a television program to prompt an action, like a bedtime routine, dinner prep, walking a dog or changing a litter box.

4. Introduce new people gradually. If you need a sitter, see if they are compatible with your child or pet. Make sure you are present the first few times a sitter is over, so kids and pets can build trust and respect. 5. If you have pets, practicing alone time is key as they need to time to understand you’ll come back. To avoid separation anxiety PetSmart suggests practicing leaving and coming back, all while gradually increasing the amount of time you stay away. ■ — News Canada
