5 tipsstaying organized

Being an organized person is a never-ending task – whether it’s staying on top of work or handling multiple responsibilities at home. Life can be hectic, so here are a few tricks to keep you calm during the storm.

1. Keep a journal with you to jot down a to-do list or anything you might need to look back on. You can try using note-taking apps on your phone if you don’t like the hassle of bringing a journal everywhere.

2. Colour code your to-do list, calendar and email based on priority or topic. That way, you’ll keep track of deadlines and tasks in an organized and visually appealing way. The colours might even brighten up your day.

3. Plan your meals ahead of time. No matter how busy you get, this is still essential. Plan and make your meals ahead of time so you won’t have to worry about throwing something unhealthy together at the last minute.

4. Take time for yourself. When life gets busy sometimes you just need to take a step back and breathe. Go for a walk and take in the crisp air. Don’t forget to put on something comfortable.

5. Find a space in your house or office to gather all the items you don’t have time to put away. That way once you’re ready to get organized during a decluttering session, you won’t have to clean all areas, but rather just that limited section. ■

save money by meal planning with what’s in season

Food prices in Canada remain high, but there are ways to get more bang for your dollars. One of the best ways is to plan your meals around what is in season. Summer and fall harvest seasons offer plenty of options to save money and eat healthy.

At this time of year, there is an amazing variety of fresh fruits ripe and ready to be enjoyed, like blueberries, apples, grapes, peaches, nectarines, pears, plums, strawberries, raspberries, watermelons and more.

There is no less variety when it comes to locally grown vegetables, from classic favourites like beans, cauliflower, carrots, peas, carrots, radishes and squash to more varied options including artichoke, bok choy, daikon radish, mustard greens, snow pea shoots and water spinach.

Tree, field or vine-ripened, they’re packed with delicious flavour and nutrients, whether they’re eaten on their own or used as an ingredient in a favourite dish.

Whether you’re stopping at an onfarm store, visiting a farmers’ market or stocking up at the supermarket, shopping for what’s in season means plenty of supply and good value for money. Buy extra when you see a great deal and freeze, can, process or pickle produce to enjoy all year long as jams, jellies, sauces, condiments, soups, ingredients and more.

Buying local will not only help you stretch your food budget, it’s also climate-friendly and more sustainable. A shorter distance from farm to plate means fewer emissions and less food waste, and you’re supporting Ontario fruit and vegetable farmers

who are using a wide range of environmentally friendly practices that support sustainable production.

This includes investments in technologies and practices that support more efficient use of water, energy and fertilizer; using tools like soil testing and cover crops; and reducing water and pesticide use.

Four ways to enjoy local fruits and vegetables all year long:

• Freezing – Peel, slice and pit fruits and freeze them on a large baking sheet before transferring them into freezer bags or storage containers. Chop and blanch vegetables before freezing by boiling them briefly and cooling them quickly to improve food safety and preserve nutrients and flavour.

• Pickling – A relatively fast and easy option to preserve fruits and vegetables is to marinate them using a brine, which is a mix of salt, sugar, vinegar, water and other spices of your choosing.

• Dehydrating – Use a dehydrator or freeze dryer to extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables and make them convenient for on-thego snacks or meals.

• Canning – A great but a bit more complex way to make jams, jellies, chutneys, sauces, salsas and other condiments. Find a good recipe, and make sure to follow the directions for proper canning techniques. ■

achieving your financial goals

isn’t

as hard as you think

In the current economic climate, many young Canadians may not be thinking about saving or investing at all. Not only can saving feel like something older people do, but it can also feel overwhelming or intimidating to start thinking about saving, so many may avoid it altogether.

start saving with any amount, no matter how small

Setting financial goals isn’t difficult if you know where to start. Whether you’re dreaming of buying property, thinking ahead to retirement or just wanting to save up for your next dream trip, you can create financial savings goals right now, no matter the number in your bank account.

“It’s a myth that you need to have a certain dollar figure to start saving for your financial future,” says Pat Giles, vice-president, saving and investing journey at TD. “When you’re starting to save and invest, it’s not so much that dollar amount that counts in the beginning; what matters more is getting into the habit of saving and sticking to it.”

boost your financial confidence

Lack of confidence in financial knowledge is a major barrier for many Millennials and Gen Zers.

The best way to start is with oneon-one financial advice and a conversation with a personal banker, who can help go over the current state of your finances and create short- and long-term financial goals.

discover the power of registered savings accounts

A Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) is a flexible option for shortterm or long-term investments – to build an emergency fund or finance your upcoming wedding or next trip. You can use your TFSA for just about any goal, at any stage in life and withdraw funds at any time, subject to any products held within the TFSA. You just need to ensure you don’t go over your contribution limit, which you can find through the Canada Revenue Agency website.

A First Home Savings Account (FHSA) is a great option for those dreaming of owning a house or condo. “It’s a registered plan that lets qualifying first-time homebuyers save for their home, and it features the benefits of both a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) and a TFSA: tax-deductible contributions, and tax-free qualified withdrawals,”

says Giles. “Be sure to read up on the qualifications on the Government of Canada’s website.”

A FHSA allows eligible firsttime homebuyers to contribute to the downpayment or purchase of a qualifying first home tax-free – with limits. Contributions are generally tax-deductible, and when a qualifying withdrawal is made, the amount is not taxable.

For those thinking ahead to retirement, consider an RRSP. When you contribute money to an RRSP, your contributions are tax-deductible. Any investment income earned from qualified investments held within the RRSP can then grow taxdeferred, as long as the money remains within the RRSP, until it’s withdrawn.

chart your financial course

To figure out exactly which registered savings accounts are right for you, it’s best to book an appointment with a personal banker. Learn more at td.com. ■

packing tips

University and college students across Canada will soon be flooding back to campuses, and when they arrive, there’s all of their stuff. John Prittie, President of Two Men and a Truck – Canada shares six simple steps to ensure easy moving.

pack right, pack light

The dorms aren’t very big and there isn’t much room for clutter.

Try to only pack the essentials with a few decorative items such as pictures of family and high school friends to make it feel more like home.

wheels make it easier

Take a cart or box dolly to help you unload and move items from your car or van to the residence.

items of a feather, are packed together

Pack similar belongings together; it makes unpacking on arrival much easier for you.

pack your tools

Buy a tool kit once you get to campus, or bring one from home, because you never know what you might have to put together, take apart or fix.

survival of the fittest

A First Aid kit is always helpful. But make sure you’re packing medicines and cleaning supplies separate from your other items.

recycle your materials

Make sure to break your boxes down and pack them away in a safe and dry place so you can use them when it’s time to move out.

If you don’t want to purchase boxes, rent totes instead. Totes stack so they get the job done well and can be picked up or retuned after a move. ■
